    When your clearancing a crankshaft for the cam, it won't unbalance the crankshaft, I use Jr. Dragster engines which have clearance on the crankshaft, doesn't unbalance the crank. Last year, I replaced the crankshaft in my Jr. Dragster engine and it didn't unbalance it, we took off 1/2 inch on one side of the crankshaft just to clear the camshaft. We also had to clear some parts of the counterbalance on the crankshaft as well. I have worked with these kinds of engines for many years.

      Great. I look forward to seeing that dinghy build.
      If you ever have a need for the unsinkable Boston Whaler you are welcome to it. I'm sure I'll have it around for a few more years. I traded a sailboat mast and sails for it a few years ago so I don't have any money in it. I have the NC title for it so you wouldn't have any issues getting it titled & registered.
      I live less than 4 miles west of the Winterville, NC Harbor Freight.

    Just a thought, for balancing, you could weigh the crankshaft, make your adjustments, weigh it again and make a note of the difference. Then when grinding the other side, you just take that difference off again and you'll know youve take the same weight off both sides

    You're definitely on the right track with the definition of 3angle valve job....the purpose of 3angle valve job is to control the width of the seat ...like Isaac said you want it to be thin .020.is the ideal width ....and also back cut the valves which a lot of people don't do and don't know to ...but it does increase intake and exhaust flow...

  • @billymanilli
    @billymanilli 6 років тому +5

    @ 4:34, Actually it's the other way around... The more width you have contacting the seat, the better the valve can transfer heat, which will keep it cooler... However, the wider the contact area, the less flow/efficiency you will have... The 3 angle is all about making the port more efficient around the valve and seat...
    Pretty much anything you do to an engine, or anything else, will have a "compromise"... ( like choosing gear ratios, for example... smaller "drive" gear & larger "driven" will give you more acceleration, but will be sacrificing top speed)
    I believe that is one of the main reasons that we all have so much fun building our own stuff...
    Just friendly "constructive criticism" from my own experience... You guys have done a lot of awesome stuff, and are also very entertaining to watch!! I've been enjoying your vids for years now... Keep up the GREAT work, and thanks again for sharing!

    Great videos guys! There's a couple things I'd like to point out: What is said at 4:31 and 5:52 contradict each other. The truth is that you need sufficient width of the contact surface between the valve and the valve seat to allow heat to transfer from the valve to the cylinder head (which cools the valve). Too little and you'll burn an exhaust valve. Also, at 4:17, you're correct in saying that it could bump up the compression just the tiniest bit without that dimple in the valve, but it also adds weight to the valve. I think the additional valve weight would negate any gains from the compression increase.
    Again, great videos guys. I just wanted to comment because I'm sure you have a lot of fans (including me) that rely on your information. Cheers!

    I've watched lots of videos on hot-roding 212s and everyone grinds off the flashing on each side of the throw, you are the only ones I've seen grinding the cam shaft. It doesn't hurt the crank to grind off and smooth out that part, and, you can grind a little off the counterweight to restore the crank balance. Grinding 25 or 30% of the cam is asking for a catastrophic failure

    To operate a tap in a constrained location, once you have it well set [as in you know it won't go sideways and screw up your threading] you can use an inverted ratchet drive of the same end size [they typically come in pretty standard 1", 3/4", 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4" end sizes, some even come in 5/8"] but for the most part, you can use those to enable smoother, more efficient tapping where you run into parts which obstruct the driver handles.

    If you end up hitting a Dyno remember to try Adjusting the length of your intake runner. To make it simple air bounces back and forth in the intake. By adjusting the length you change the timing of that pressure wave hitting a open valve. In turn adjusting the power band. Same by changing volume/diameter of it. Same applys to the exhaust for causing a vacuum to help scavenge exhaust out of the cylinder!

    • @ironridgeoutdoors
      @ironridgeoutdoors 6 років тому +28

      For the same effort/money you could have thrown on a cr80 engine, a yamaha cart engine and a variety of snowmobile engines. All of which will fit where a 212 would with minor fab that these guys have done many times in the past. Don't get me wrong a built 212 is cool, but I'd never even consider it at $1k. So many better options. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

      That's the only time the valve can cool is when closed ,and more contact means more heat extraction. I've had issues in vws,they want about a .120 wide contact area.

    Just for future reference, when using a reamer you should use oil. It'll leave a MUCH better finish and you'll be less likely to break the reamer.

    Take a socket, like maybe 3/4”(about as big as the valve retainer). Cut a big window or hole in about half of the side of the socket. Then you can use a c clamp and that socket to compress the valve spring into the head to get the keepers out. Works great with the head off.

    When shaving heads, it is pretty helpful to use some kind of really straight, flat assembly [steel, or, if you are really skilled, wood] that you can mount your head to which will ensure 100% squareness of the part to the belt, OR, if you can get to one, a vertical mill which has been properly trammeled in to square.

    20 HP is an overestimate for a 212cc GX engine. 12-13 HP would be appropriate. Even a 210cc Cg motorcycle engine has 12Kw(15.5 HP).

    • @WildfoxFabrication

      its not. a stage 2 makes 16hp and this is a stage 4... might even be making more than 20.

    Ok, for reaming the valve guides, the best way to center the reamer in the guide and keep the bore in line is to put the smooth shaft through the guide and pull it through with the drill. This will eliminate any wobble at the start of the reaming.
    Just so you know for the next head😊

    If you bought this exact engine, check your compression. And read this that I discovered. I bought the same exact engine for a big 2 person go kart, It ran fine for 10 hours, then lost power. After checking the compression on it, I was sad to see it only had 52 lbs. I took off the head, piston, checked the valves, piston, rings, gasket, and all seemed ok. I took the vales out because one seemed a little harder to push through and sanded with 600 paper. After putting it all back together I reached the compression and still had only 52 lbs instead of the 120 (8.5) it is suppose to have. NOW THE SHOCKER!!! I also bought a brand mew 3200/40000 watts generator, predator with the same exact engine. I had only started it when I got it and used it for about 20 minutes. I took the spark plug off and checked the compression. I was shocked to see it had the same 53 lbs as the other one. So Im wondering, it Harbor freight selling this engines with only 52 compression and know it or that is going on. With this little compression the engine is only maeing about 3 HP or less. Id like to have people with this engine check their compression and see if they also have a weak 1/2 compression as I do. If so, then we are getting the shaft and been ripped of. But worse the engine is not performing the way it is advertised and is breaking the law. Both harbor freight and Predator for making them this way.
