      I found a turbo vw bug engine online for a reasonable price and I thought about tossing one on a gokart. Vw bugs are pretty small to begin with so the engine and trans should fit.

    Love this project! As someone who used to love to throw Rods in $10 yardsale 5HP Flat Head B+S engines.. they didn't last long, but had another block in the wings to swap parts onto. As they loosened up, they make even more power. IMO, your 20HP isn't winding high enough. Have you checked Engine RPM? In my experience: If it sounds like it's going to explode, you're close to max power. Just my two cents from hacking flat head 5HP's w/o ANY aftermarket parts. My Recipe: Big Lawn Tractor Carb + homemade conduit intake manifold, HOG ports way OUT, Footlong homemade exhaust pipe, Give flat head a fire channel from cylinder to intake port, Thin homemade copper head gasket, belt sand the head, two Exhaust Valve Springs (much stiffer than intake), Springs shimmed close to solid at full lift, Grind off back side of cam maybe 0.1", make backside round till the ramps, Weld a "Bump" on the lifters and Grind off for proper valve clearance. Homemade Offset Keyway to advance ignition timing.. Total HACK JOB (Loved it!), but results were astounding.. If the block didn't have a puddle underneath, there was more RPMs/power left. Rod always failed, usually sticking out the side of the block, with piston pin pulled out the bottom of the piston, and a pile of metal pieces in the crankcase..

      another trick was to squirt some oil on the centrifugal clutch to raise the engagement RPM.. had a worn out Yardsale OLD mid 60's Margay cart (Simple!) with a McCulloch 100cc that I could NEVER get to run, so switched to B&S..

    Was thinking of the enduro (lay-down) kart chassis you guys picked up in Virginia a while back when I was watching you test the Lifan powered shifter kart. I'd like to suggest you extend the rear of that chassis and mount the engine as low as possible in the center of the frame. This would reduce your frontal area as much as possible. This was the idea behind the Enduro kart set up and it was effective. Lengthening the wheelbase would also make the kart More stable at high speed. When I was racing I had the thrill of racing at the Watkins Glen road course in New York. I was running a Maculloch MC 93 in a sit-up kart. My best speed was 92MPH. The 2 stroke engine topped out at 12,500rpm and my gearing was 12/64 with 35 roller chain. You do the math. The top class at the event was B & C open and the winner was an Enduro Kart with dual 125cc engines on alcohol. He was clocked at 135MPH and was lapping the 3.2 Mile course 30 seconds slower than the track record for all classes including Formula One. Too bad he didn't have a flux capacitor! Great Scott!

    The springs on the spindles are your last twitch. The movement steers each side on hitting the bumps, the tie rods travel in an arc, toeing either side in or out independently.

      there's kits that push that engine upwards of 30hp, all from a tiny 212. but, the mods put the engine up to similar levels of engineering that you'd find in something like a lambo v10, lots of HP per liter

      Yeah but its such a waste of money heavily upgrading a 212cc because gopowersports is such a rip off and of they had too pay out of pocket all the mods together would be $1000 because each stage kit is like $300 a piece on go powersports because they are a rip off and that is outrageous for a chines engine plus you could get a low cc manual engine and easily make it go that fast for less than half of the money in predator

    Did some math, with 11 inch tall tires you need a gear ratio of
    2.975 @ 8000 rpm to go 88mph.
    3.161 @ 8500
    3.347@9000 rpm

  • @NckGarage

    A few things. Do you think putting gussets to the tubing going to the spindles would strengthen that part of the cart and remove some bump steer? Is there a way you could run smaller tires because if so you cut down on wind resistance rolling resistance and inertia the smaller the better. You could also air up the front tires more and last thing you could get a cheap teach and not guess on engine rpm. By smaller I was referring to width not really height but you could change height and then change gear sizes to compensate with the tire height being smaller which would also help with wind resistance

    • @jasonleedham5678
      @jasonleedham5678 6 років тому

      Surely air DOWN the tyres? hard tyres bounce more, air down and they will add a little suspension to the ride. I would drop 10psi, then try it, and add 2 psi at a time, if it needs more at least they will know

    • @NckGarage
      @NckGarage 6 років тому +1

      Jason Leedham with the tires aired down it would grip the road more which would cause more drag with the roads if they air up it would cause the contact patch with the road to decrease the amount of energy to push the go kart especially at higher speeds especially with the front tires because they aren't meant to put power to the road

    • @jasonleedham5678
      @jasonleedham5678 6 років тому

      N1ck0145 Garage I was thinking air down to combat the twitchiness, I see airing up would decrease rolling resistance, and help the kart go faster, I was thinking of safer handling....

    You did add positive caster angle, which will result in the wheels straightening out after a turn. The main adjustment that would stablize the kart in the turn itself is being sure the Akerman angle is correct. Correct Tow in or out is desireable, along with scrub radius. This will prevent the steering tires from fighting one another in the turn and causing one or both tires sliding sideways and wearing them out prematurely. Each tire will turn in it's own correct radius...much like the shopping cart front wheels do. However the individual radius angle of the shopping cart wheels is determined by the friction of the surface you are rolling the cart on. This will not be the case on your cart because their angle will be determined by the "set adjustment" of the steering linkage.

    • @natevanbynen6595
      @natevanbynen6595 6 років тому +3

      super simple, Tiny Tach has 2 wires; 1 is grounded to the engine and the other wraps around the spark plug wire (for the signal). and that is it. The tach itself has a build in battery that is good for 3-5yrs. bad part is built in battery cannot be replaced, you have to replace the whole meter. Also this will work on multi-cylinder applications. I have one thats been going for 4 years and still kicking strong :-)

    MORE TOE IN, a steering damper is a bandaid, a couple ticks between the front and the back at 18 inches is NOTHING

    • @ImTheJoker4u
      @ImTheJoker4u 6 років тому +1

      Toe in brings the fronts of the tires closer, which makes it More responsive in corners, but twitchy on straights. Toe out has the opposite effect. Straight line stability in increased, but cornering grip will diminish.

    Fellas, I think it needs bump steer spacers, get the tie rod ends on the wheel side close to level with the steering shaft end. The frame flex can change the geometry. If it steers away from the bump hit, then this may be something to investigate.

    Adjusting the toe would have been faster, easier, and more effective at eliminating the frontend from darting.
    A car with excessive toe-out will have skittish steering, often darting to either side of the road very easily. The usual spec is slight toe-in to compensate for angular pressure that forces each tire outward as the car rolls down the road.
    2mm over, what, 3 1/2 FEET (length of your measuring pipe).... is too little! You need more toe!

    I'd love to see you make a stainless finished sheet metal ferring on the front end of the gokart, I feel it would complete the look nicely and maybe get you the drag reduction you need for a larger rear gear, great video guys!

    One small, albeit important step, make sure the driver is sitting in the kart while you align it! At least with racing karts, they'll flex and alignment specs become dependent on weight distribution. With a European kart, it is not uncommon for karts to gain a few degrees of negative camber just from the driver getting the in the seat. Cheers, Boys!

    Smog pump supercharger is the way to go, the aggressive gearing won't be a problem then. There's a VW/Porsche model that's very popular because the outlet is 24mm, so it matches perfectly with the 24mm intake on the Mikuni.

    Don't forget the Cyan colored Electroluminescent wire That turns on when you hit 88 Mph. Also flame trails behind the tires would be cool too, if a bit dangerous. But it'll be fine.

    Your bump steer is from the (spring) spindles. As they move up they become closer together. If you hit a bump on the right tire that tire steers left, if you hit a bump on the left tire, it steers right.

  • @stevebarnette

    That steering looked very reminiscent of Senna’s steering shaft; the one that theoretically broke at high speed and killed him. Glad you found that play and addressed it.

    Also try putting a steering stabilizer on the front from like a atv or another kind of stabilizer of eBay or close to that and maybe try putting the throttle on the steering wheel and make it so you can like lay down to stay more aerodynamic

  • @pathaze4299
    @pathaze4299 6 років тому

    After changing the gear ratio, try adding a little sheet metal shroud that covers the drivers legs and the steering wheel to make it slightly more aerodynamic. Then you could even shape that shroud to make the front end look like a DeLorean with square headlights.

  • @jamescole6846

    I was just about to say it but someone already did. You need a Tach. With that you would be able to see what your RPM's were at 70 and then do the brain math and extrapolate from the size of your gears and the circumference of your tires, the exact gearing ratio needed to change to get to 88 or faster.... As close as your are it's not going to take much. I would put back in the slightly larger engine drive gear on the clutch. You only have 14 miles to go.
    Also, The sticker on the floor-pan to keep the paint from getting all scratched up works for now but you should cut a piece of aluminum diamond plate to stick up there about the same size as the sticker with a few pop rivets to hold it in place. I did on mine for the same reason and it looks great , BTW, you can cut aluminum diamond plate with a carbide tip skill saw. I used a 18V on mine 1/4 inch thick. The blade will most likely will not cut wood very decent anymore but it leaves and nice clean cut on the aluminum. Change the blade afterwards and keep the metal one for next time.
