  • Today we're building a Predator 212cc engine to run on E85! E85 is 85% ethanol, and the right engine specs and tuning, can make a TON of power (way more than the gasoline equivalent in some cases). We're building a stage 2 212 using Go Power Sports parts, including their killer new 265 hot cam. In today's episode, we build the engine, and tune the carburetor to run Sunoco's E85-R properly, and HOLY SMOKES does this engine RIP!
    Thanks for Watching!

    A build like this is where full engine control makes more sense. Instead of drilling jets and everything else you just change a few numbers in a table, plus you get RPM dependent changes to spark advance to take advantage of what E85's lower combustion speed and high resistance to detonation does at low RPM.
    Got to say I love what you did with what you had.

  • @blsully
    @blsully 5 років тому +118

    You're going to get lower air velocity through the 26mm carb, thus less suction pulling fuel from the carb bowl, so you may actually have to go larger on the main jet than you would otherwise on the 22mm to help 'suction'. Size the carb to your airflow needs. If a 22mm will flow enough air, use the 22 and jet to match the fuel. Going too big will result in poor transition between the pilot and main circuit and the motor will tend to fall on it's face without running a main that's WAY too fat for what the motor really needs.

      @Garrett Knowledge is never a waste of time, watch this: LOL, a ton more ton more power, hahahahah, I love you guys. I am a retired dyno-tech, that only thing E85 is good good for is stability between weekend's in 1/8 and 1/4 miles cars as oxygenated fuels are less sensitive to weather conditions....Nitro-methane being one of the few exceptions, and corrosion in engine components. Don't get me wrong, it's like many of my younger friends, you never listen, and it is fun it is watching you try things. I would heed the MSD sheets on the stuff thou, and don't that stuff in a hot shed, that is not a "it will be ve fine" circumstance. The bump in compression was the best mod you made. BTW less mass on the flywheel is for better engine acceleration , not power. If you do try tuning with an 02 sensor, note that you will find best power around 9.87 afrs @wot, in my testing anyway, and i do not care where it is with pump E85. Funny the sunoco blurb didn't say anything about e85 having 25% lower energy density than gasoline.... If you're particular setup can safely run gasoline it WILL have less power on e85. Don't get me wrong e85 allows for boost and timing levels that gasoline wouldn't in certain applications but you cant just throw it in a setup that works on gas and get more power.

      Do RC All things being equal, and you change over to e85, e85 will make more power than just about any gasoline aside from maybe Q16. Yes alcohols have less energy density, thats true for both ethanol and methanol. E85 improves power and torque production under the curves and peak power numbers as well. In this application, if the carb is set up properly, it will out power the same engine on gas. E85 not only has an octane advantage, it also has to advantage of latent heat vaporization that gasoline does not. It’s a very forgiving fuel, and it makes better power and torque than gasoline

    The power potential can be calculated:
    A richer stoichometric air fuel ratio of 9/1 for ethanol allows more fuel to be burned in a single stroke vs gasoline's air fuel ratio of 14.7/1.
    This is party offset by a smaller energy content of 22,7MJ/L on ethanol vs 32,5MJ/L on gasoline.
    This is overall a 14% power increase if done right.
    E85 tends to cool the intake charge by evaporative cooling, which is not too important on an naturally aspirated engine, but can give a small power increase due to a denser intake charge.
    The last factor is the higher octane rating of ethanol, which doesn't give ANY power increase at all to a unmodified engine.
    It is very important to note that even on an engine with raised compression, there is zero gain from a higher octane rating. It is only interesting and will give a power increase over gasoline, because you can increase the compression ratio PAST the point where gasoline would start knocking and not be able to run in this engine.
    You'll probably not feel the power increase, since 14% is well within the margin of error that your jetting will give you. Still, it's a 14% power increase, given that the jetting is set correctly on gas and ethanol.

Think of it this way, you can "decap" 700cc fuel injectors and get ghetto flowing 900cc injectors with bad fuel atomization and spray patterns. Drilling jets is exactly that. You can drill a size 45 jet to a 50, BUT it will not flow or atomize fuel like an actual precision machine tapered, chamfered and cut #50 jet. Sometimes the difference can be as big as a few HP. I saw a 12 HP increase on my 95 cb750 when using real jets vs drilled ones, both the same size.

    @hdrenginedevelopment7507 5 років тому

    A few things about E85...pump E85 can be a blend as low as E50 depending on the time of year. High percentage ethanol gets really tricky to start in the winter. If you run anything on pump E85, you should have a fuel composition sensor with blend tables for EFI, or a box of carb jets, because E50 in the cold months is not going to jet the same way as actual E85...one benefit of buying it in a Sunoco can if the above mentioned is a problem...it's consistent. 2nd, E85 tends to burn a tad slower, so a little more advance is needed as a baseline. E85 has a very high anti knock index compared to any pump gasoline, so there is a good chance that you will be able to advance timing beyond peak torque safely and will more likely not be knock limited anywhere in the map on a naturally aspirated engine, allowing you to realize full power potential in more operating conditions (especially against heat soak). E85 also makes rich best torque about 11:1 AFR on the gasoline lambda conversion scale (gasoline is more like 12:1), so it does make best power a little richer relative to gasoline's optimal AFR. E85 evaporates more easily and so provides more of an intake charge cooling effect. It also burns cooler, so your EGTs should be lower at optimal mixture than gasoline. And of course the thing that drives me crazy...E85 does not decrease fuel "economy"! It decreases fuel "mileage". A well tuned E85 setup will about break even in cost per mile on road with midgrade pump gas, but with far superior performance and longevity benefits. It burns much cleaner, so carbon buildup is much less of an issue. The only thing to be aware of is the moisture and resulting corrosion issues, so don't store it for a long time, keep car tanks topped off if it's going to sit more than a week, do not leave fuel in the tank or fuel system at all if the system is atmospheric vented or has problems with the evporative recovery system leaking. Have fun!

    The only way you really see any gains with E85 is if you are running super high (like 14:1) compression or boost. In a low compression N/A carbed engine you aren't going to see much change other than it will run a little cooler. The benefits of running alcohol is it's more stable at higher cylinder pressures than gasoline. You need 30% more fuel over the base amount of any given size carb. Going up to a larger carb with more air doesn't mean you need less than 30% more fuel, you need 30% more fuel than typical with that amount of air. It's the air fuel ratio that matters, with more air from the bigger carb you still need 30% more fuel for it.
    BTW there's also different octane ratings of E85.. just because it's 85% ethanol doesn't mean they octane number is the same.. Watch Engine Masters on MotorTrend On Demand.. Freiburger did a thing where he showed the difference between E85 and high octane race gas and had multiple octane levels of E85.

    The timing advance is going to give a good bit more power even without e85. The ethanol allows it to run more Compression and timing without detonation , it also as you read, helps cool everything including the Piston crown which also helps resist detonation. So the reason you get a bigger gain with a more modified engine is you can get more aggressive with the tune without detonation and it is assisting the cooling system too. You definitely want to err on the rich side, you can cook it pretty quick. If it's popping on deceleration alot I would richen a bit.

There is a reason why Honda designed the crankcase to vent out the head cover, because the high pressure air, laden with oil droplets, would make its way up to the the valves and rockers before venting. Without pressurized oil lubrication, this is the only way to insure oil flow to the valves.

    There isnt much to risk on the higher power motors. It actually if anything protects the motor IF the internals are strong enough for the power. It cuts down on knock and keeps the motor cool further lowering knock. Just need to make sure fueling is there because it requires more about 30 percent more. We use it on all the turbo cars because of it. It's basically cheap race ruel. Pick it up for cheaper than gas in the area (still spend a tad more based on mpg), far cheaper than the comparable 110 that sells for about 8 bucks a gallon in my area.

That's on top of rpm. Make it breath freely and pump in the fuel. That's the secret of E-85 fuel engines. Be extremely careful alcohol fires are invisible Or damn close to it.

Also a bigger carb may have a bigger jet, but it is still sized for gas, you will still have needed a bigger jet which you learned. Also timing may be an issue.
