Neat video! I'm looking to either make or pay someone to make some Gameboy Color cartridges reminiscent of the Gen 2 Pokemon games but with a unique color and glittery look. This was really helpful in familiarizing myself with the process and terminology used to get that done. Thanks for putting this info out there! 👍
I wanted to say that I like to watch your videos because with yours I actually pull some knowledge out of them. Now to head out to the shop and apply the knowledge!!
You're welcome man! I think there might be a problem with the discount code, said it was expired. I'm hoping to get that resolved today though, already got a call in to SCD about it. Hope you try out some glitter =D
Very cool Zac! I like how it stays suspended in the resin. I used some HoK mini flakes and even though I let the resin thicken a bit there were a lot more flakes at the bottom of the blanks. I really like how it’s tiny strands instead of standard flakes, and their colors are pretty awesome too. Thanks for sharing and especially the dicount code. You rock man!
Thanks brother! Hope you have some fun with it. I know how finicky glitters can be with sinking or even floating. This stuff worked really well in Alumilite Clear. I did notice it sinking a bit on hotter days in the shop when the resin thinned out a little. It was pretty good as long as the temp stayed below 83 degrees though. Suspended nicely
I have an idea for you! Take some small cylinder magnets with small enough OD to allow you to use em in a pen blank and remove them later leaving a hole. Make a rod of the magnets with some wood or other pellets inbetween so you get multiple magnets not just a single long one and wrap this in teflon tape or something to help release it. Wrap this again in a straw or similar plastic sheat so it will be 2-layer that can slide out after molding. The outer layer being scraficial and you would drill out the blank later to the right dia thus removing it anyway. Now for the fun part: Use iron filings or similar and sprinkle on the magnetic rod to create those classic archs of filings. This might not be teh best way and maybe even letting it re-form in the resin works, I dunno. Anyway; I bet this would look awesome cast in resin!
For my *first ever* epoxy resin pour (three weeks ago I think?) I got creative because I wanted a galaxy with shimmers of all the stars, blue, green, red and white. I decided-based on the fact I have learned it's OK to put glue in acrylics, acrylics into epoxy--why not put glitter glue in epoxy! Oh my gosh........I did an acrylic black paint to set the canvas for the stars then had at it. The effect is amazing. It's like looking at an image of our galaxy and seeing all the wonderful shimmers of color. Yeah, glitter is cool! Still working on the piece, it's three layers in now with epoxy and stuff. Created some planets from previous acrylic pour drips. Much fun. Thank you for the inspiration and super videos!
That's so cool! I'd love to see it when you get done. Shoot me some pics or tag me on social media if you get a chance. It's always great to see people jump into casting and have a blast with it =D
Pressure potting seems to be a long winded process.. no? Vacuum chamber allows one to take the mold out and free up the chamber to continue working... pls advise why pressure pot over vacuum chamber , tnx.
I am super new to resin and I started making letter key chains with glitter, I mix it in with the resin and pour into a silicon mold but when it’s setting all the glitter sinks to the bottom 😞 do you have any tips on how to get the resin all through out? Thanks!!
Good evening Zach I have a quick question for you. I just went to Michael’s art store and I bought alumilite clear cast resin 1:1 ratio and alumilite pigment and I wanted to know if I bought the right product to cast some pen blanks. I do have a pressure pot.
Hi Zac I have used your nebulous kit and I love the outcome. I cast a 3/4 black tube and then pour your nebulous kit around it. It makes great looking bottle openers and wine stoppers. Is your kit different than Solar Dust, if so, I will stick with your nebulous kit.
Hey Zac quick question! I'm trying to cast D20 dice and other DnD dice with glitter but my glitter keeps sinking to the bottom of my mold! I've got the finest glitter I can possibly get with Unicone resin with a pressure pot, any advice?
Ordered my glitter and it's shipping now. This stuff looks great and I think will sell well. You used mold release, correct? And what do you use to demold the tubes? Thanks. Hope you're rested up from Waco. Looking forward to your next video. Keep up the good work!
Awesome! Hope you have fun with it Howard. I use mold release on PVC pipes, but I usually don't on the HDPE molds. I have links to where I get my PVC pipes on my "Tools I Use" page on my website: nvwoodwerks.com/tools/ The reason I use clear pipe is just so I can see inside when I'm pouring
I'll have to check that out. They have so many products, it's mind boggling LOL I hear ya on adding an extra scoop. With pens, you really have to load it up or it ends up really sparse once you turn it down. I find you can almost never add too much of the powders or glitters with pen blanks
@@ZacHiggins It's so true, it really is an experiment each time. Not as bad if it's a wide diameter blank with a decent wall thickness, but if it's a slim wall thickness, like Sierra's, definitely have to load it in thick. I like your idea of doing the tube in casting and sticking the glitter to the tube, I had thought of doing this myself as well.
I use their glow powder but for whatever reason it ends up going to the bottom of the mold. I’ve tried with more powder than recommended but it seems to always happen. Also tried with glitter too. And I’ve used the resin from Michaels and 325 from smooth on. Any suggestions
Glow powders are really heavy, so they tend to sink in resin. Glitter can go both ways, some of it can sink, some tends to float. I've had good luck with the glitter in Alumilite Clear, seems to stay in suspension pretty well. If you have problems with floating or sinking, try waiting until the resin starts thickening up near the end of the working time to pour it in the mold. Should hold it in place better for you
Hey Kris, it depends on the resin you're using and the glitter. Some resins are thicker than other and tend to hold it in place. Some glitters are heavier than the resin and sink and some are lighter and float. The best way to keep it from moving is to wait until the end of the working time when it starts to gel up a bit, give it a mix then pour it in the mold. Being in a gel state, the glitter won't tend to float or sink, plus the resin will set up soon and lock it in place
I won't be adding them to regular inventory, but the three in the video and a few more with glitter in them are actually for sale on my website right now under the "Short Runs" section: nvwoodwerks.com/product-category/shortruns/
So sorry for the late comment on this one. I just discovered your channel. I was wondering how you avoid having things settel during the cure time in your blanks? I was also wondering if you would be willing to do a video on your "Tube-in-blank" process. I have an idea that am super amped to try. My thought is that I would like to make the mold to do my own "tube-in-blank" Any thoughts or ideas would be most appreciated.
Hey Matthew, the trick for glitter is to wait until the end of the working time to pour the resin into the mold. Two reasons: First, the resin starts to thicken up and will often times hold it in place. Second, the glitter shouldn't have enough time to move around before the resin sets up. I just mix it up a bit before I pour so it's distributed well throughout the resin and pour when it's time. I don't really do too much tube in casting to be honest, so I don't know a whole lot of tricks to it. I just use Fred Wissen's molds since they work awesome (ptownsubbie.com/collections/tube-in-molds). I just followed Fred's videos on his website, and I picked up some tips from Chad Schimmel's channel as well: ua-cam.com/users/ctschimmel
Thanks Larry! I get my burl wood a few places. There are wood dealers that carry it, but it can get expensive at some of them. There's also eBay or Facebook groups, those are usually the cheapest but the quality can vary. 2 Tree Boys and Aussie Burls USA are both reasonably priced with pretty good selection
i have tried this and find that most of the glitter goes to the bottom of my molds. I have treir reducing the pressure in my pot and this still happens.
It seems to stay suspended well in Alumilite Clear. If you find it sinking to the bottom, just wait till the resin reaches the gel state at the end of the working time to pour it. The thicker state of the resin as well as it only having a few minutes before it solidifies should help out
Yeah I know, I've got a call in already about it. They told me there wasn't going to be an expiration on the code, but that's not the case it seems LOL I'll get it fixed as soon as possible

Zac, did you have any of the glitter settle to the bottom of the blank as you cast it? Or did the Alumilite cure more quickly and not allow for it to settle?I just put up a video of some blanks I cast yesterday and the glitter I used did settle in the bottom, but I was also using polyester resin. ua-cam.com/video/CrJSny-Kkt8/v-deo.html
It just depends on the resin you are using, how much glitter you add to the resin, and how long you wait to pour it. Thicker resins usually hold things like glitter suspended pretty well, but you can always wait till the resin thickens to pour it in the mold. Alumilite works great with these glitters when the ambient temperature is below 80 degrees. Once it warmed up a bit in the shop, the resin thinned out a bit, and the glitter tended to sink a little more
Sorry, lots going on over here. It's a miracle I was able to get this one up before SWAT LOL I've tried a few color shift powders, but not theirs yet. The chameleon glitter rocks though!
Zac Higgins I've put it in a few castings. My yellowish bottle stopper had it. It has an effect but not that great that way. I have a couple of tubes painted I'm going to spray it on to put it on a flat surface like it's suppose to be and clear cast them. I'll put the pics up on Twitter when I get them done.
It all depends on the thickness of the resin and the weight of the glitter. These glitters worked well in Alumilite Clear though, stayed pretty well suspended
Looove glitter.
Im in love with that black holographic in the beginning. Oh my 😍😍😍
This is awesome! I would love to know how to prevent glitter/power from just sinking to the bottom of every mold? I can't win with glitter
Wait until your resin starts to get thick and then mix.
@@mindyowen7196 when does it get thick and should i add glitter before or after putting it in the mold

Uh oh, that's a bummer!! Unfortunately the only things that will dissolve alumilite requires a hazmat license to purchase. Think you might be hosed :(
Very cool 😎
Thanks Andy! I love finding things that are easy to include and produce pretty cool effects like this. Glitter, who would've thunk it =D
Looks great Zac, what did you use for the mold on the larger box?

It just depends on the resin you are using, how much glitter you add to the resin, and how long you wait to pour it. Thicker resins usually hold things like glitter suspended pretty well, but you can always wait till the resin thickens to pour it in the mold. Alumilite works great with these glitters when the ambient temperature is below 80 degrees. Once it warmed up a bit in the shop, the resin thinned out a bit, and the glitter tended to sink a little more
