    Great trick with the card scraper! I'd never have thought of that.
    I work with resin quite a bit. Not the kind you have to check the temp on, that having been said ...
    Wood off-gasses. Best way to keep the bubbles out of resin without a pressure pot is to seal the wood first so air doesn't get out. Can use a couple of coats of shellac, or UV resin (just a thin, painted on coat) that you can put outside on a sunny day and it will be ready for pouring in about 10 minutes. Maybe an hour in cloudy conditions. Once the wood is sealed, any bubbles will come from the resin. (UV coating may be sticky even when fully cured, so you can wipe with alcohol if you're concerned about it).
    One way to get the bubbles out (again, I don't use stuff you have to check the temp on), put the mixed resin (before coloring) in a water bath on the stove and heat to 125 F and let it sit at that temp until all of the bubbles are gone. If you're mixing in small amounts (or using a resin with sufficient working time), you can actually heat it on an electric coffee cup warmer until the bubbles are gone.
    Then you can mix in your colorant very gently so as to not introduce more bubbles than necessary (and I recommend a plastic or silicone stir stick because the tongue depressors sent with most all kits are WOOD with trapped air), pop what comes up with a torch, and voila!.
    If you take the time (and I'm as impatient as they come), you won't ever have a bubble problem with hybrid blanks.

    I made a pressure pot from a HF paint sprayer but need to practice with it more. I was using the incorrect type of resin and it wasn't working well for me. This was before I even started turning anything on a lathe lol. I think I'll look into getting some of this resin, just for the fact that it seems easy to work with, and no pressure needed. Thanks for another great video, and GO PACK GO

    Jake, at 2.55 point, you placed molds into oven for preheating. Thus, a few questions.
    1) how long do you typically bake the molds?
    2) what temperature are you setting the oven?
    Given that you used HDPE type molds (I'm new to casting), is there a difference in using silicone molds?
    Also, I really liked your use of a card scraper. I'll have to give that a whirl!
    Thanks for your instructive lesson.

    • @JakeThompson

      Thank you… Glad you enjoyed the video..
      I put the molds in the oven at 150f for about 30 minutes. This is a pretty old video and I mostly use silicon be molds, in fact I sell my own molds now.. so much more convenient than HDPE .. not cheaper, but better in my opinion 🦾

    Those turned out GREAT. I think your idea to leave in the original container longer would be a good idea. I use liquid diamonds, thank to Zac’s recommendation. I do not turn but it works for me for the most part. There are still some bubbles when the resin is translucent but not too bad if you watch it with a lighter or heat gun like what you did. Thanks for sharing.

    Great video man.
    I use Wise Bond epoxy because it also has a long working time. It's got a three to four hour working time. The one thing I like about the long working time of weisbond, is you don't have to worry about popping air bubbles. After sitting on your bench for 4 hours, the air bubbles have already risen to the surface and popped themselves.
    I once poured a 6 inch block of clear resin and had no air bubbles.
    And I never use a pressure pot when I use Wisebond.
    Their stuff isn't cheap, but I love it. You should give it a look sometime

    One thing you didn't address, Jake, is how the Liquid Diamonds turns. Having turned nearly all the different synthetics, I find that LD and Alumilite turn the best. They aren't as brittle as polyester resin and are more resilient. More importantly, they are less likely to have chip out unless you get really aggressive... from my experience. Did you find this to be true for you? The blanks turned out great, BTW!

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  5 років тому +1

      Billy Burt I really didn’t get to turn enough on these to form an opinion yet., I just turned the two blanks until they became round. The next video will be a heads up comparison with Alumilite, Liquid Diamonds, and Total Boat. I’m going to cast larger blanks and compare lots of different aspects.. I’m pretty excited to get this comparison video made.

    Does the proper temp to add color change based on the resin you’re using? I think here it was 120 degrees. Is it different for Alumlite or Total Boat? Thanks! Great vids!

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  5 років тому

      David Campbell You are correct, it is different with different types of resin. Alumilite is 98 degrees.. I haven’t messed with total boat enough to know yet.. experimenting is the fun part though.

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  5 років тому +1

      Gary Spruill I haven’t done a deeper pour with liquid diamonds yet.. but I plan to do a side by side with liquid diamonds, total boat, and alumilite. Should be fun.. but I already know alumilite works for deeper pours and you don’t have to do multiple pours.. the liquid diamonds did seem to sand easier and faster than alumilite.. I will compare lots of aspects when I make that video.. I wanted to do it this week but it turned out to be freezing in Amarillo this weekend.. lol
