In this video I go over the PASGT, LWH, MICH, ACH, ECH, and IHPS level IIIA (3A) Kevlar and UHMWPE helmets. Learn about the history and evolution of these helmets, how to spot legitimate US military helmets, how to spot fake airsoft, replica, and/or Chinese-made helmets.
Understand the differences in night vision mounting hole patterns and the differences between the low-cut TC-2000 helmet, the mid-cut "gunfighter" TC-2002 helmet, and the high-cut TC-2001 helmet.
Figure out what size helmet you need for your braincase, how much should you pay for a helmet, and whether or not you should drill holes in a Kevlar helmet.

I paid $600 for a surplus ECH that came with rails and the nvg shroud already attached. Still feel I got the better part of the deal on that purchase.

I have an MSA ACH helmet fully kitted out with OCP cover (with glint squares), cat eye band, goggle straps, Ops-Core H-nape Head-Loc retention system, tan NVG shroud (single-screw, USGI-style) and ballistic nape protector pad. Took me about a year to buy them all through eBay and Amazon.

Paid 250 for a low cut gentex ACH with a nvg shroud and rhino mount already on it feel great about that deal now

I don't think people should be upset with ACH style helmets, Offer more protection and they are more affordable than 1k+ helmets, Unless if you are getting a RF1/RF2 rated helmet of course. I will be taking my ACH over my Ops Core XR anyday, Mainly because someone tested the XR and the ''RF1 like'' rating was a fucking lie. Also Chinese MILITECH helmets work, Better than Ops-Core helmets lol. Also i would HIGHLY recommend staying far away from the IHPS, It's worse than the Russian 6b47 helmet and it's 1k$+.
When your only experience with any type of helmet is through UA-cam.

Just want to add my experience to help. I was confused for a bit because I have a IIIA poly whatever material "newer" 2011ish ballstic helmet... But it's "PASGT style". I'm sure there could be other oddities like this so style doesn't necessarily meant it does X, Y, or Z. Also, don't get a PASGT style as they are indeed hard to stuff for. I'm still figuring out side rails but a shroud or single screw nods mount fits fine. Team Wendy XL suspension retention system works well, as does the larger size OpsCore.
I think my PASGT kevlar helmet is 1st Gen, the only markings "HELMET PASGT SP 0100-03-D-E 6470-01-092-75" it ink stamped mid center embossed M-2. Left side ink stamp L011124 i don't know the maker would you know any about this.. helmet?
I’m not sure if the “drill hole” will necessary cause a “weakness” in the helmet. The reason I say this is that the modern USMC helmet… the hole is plugged by what is called a “ballistics screw”. What does that really mean… no fudging clue… but if I had to guess… a hole on its own… sure that’s probably bad news and a “weak point”. However if you are filling that hole with a screw that has been designed to “work” with the UHDPE or Kevlar fiber. There is the possibility that they did that testing and determined that even if the round impacts directly on the hole.. because the hole diameter is known and the “plug” in the form of the “ballistic screw” is also engineered to “catch” the round in the same way as if the round just hit nothing but the fiber/material. I am truly just talking our of my butt here… but without a lot of testing and knowing exactly what the screw is made and the exact angles of impact involved etc etc… it is conceivable that the hole and screw system provide a high level of “stopping power” comparable to the material alone. That would really be a bummer if you got hit with a “stoppable” round… and it just so happened to hit that hole and blow out the back of your dome. One in a million shot. Lol
This might just be a myth, but I've heard the numbers (which are also present on pasgt) were mold numbers at which mold at the factory it was pressed from. IDK if that's true though.

One thing I'd like to know are reputable places to buy surplus helmets. Ebay always makes me nervous and some sites seem really sketchy.

I'd just buy norotos surplus nvg shrouds and mounts that's what I bought for my modified pnv57e night vision goggles for my pasgt, I'm running a pvs31 battery pack for my Soviet nvgs, works great. I just replaced the suspension system with a modern retention system and used modern foam padding I bought a set of arc rails. I modernized my pasgt
Yeah drilling holes is a load of crap. Obviously right where the hole is there's little protection, but the rest of the helmet is fine. You could always cover the hole edge with some epoxy if you're worried about fraying.
Hey man what size helmet do you wear? I’m not sure if I need a medium or a large cause I’m not sure if the medium with have enough room to fit my headset underneath it
I wear a medium, visit my website aanv.us and under the HELMETS page there is a sizing chart for ACHs. If you want to run comms UNDER the helmet you'll have to remove the top, circle helmet pad, and it will still give you a migraine after 30 mins. I talk about this in my High Cut Helmet on a Budget video.
I was lucky enough to find a legit Ceradyne ECH (Medium) from a surplus store a few years ago. I was in the Corps in the early 2000’s and wore the PASGT for over two years in combat (three deployments including the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003). I know that helmet really well. When I initially bought the ECH I was just gonna put it on the shelf for display. The guy who sold it to me didn’t know anything about it either apparently because I bought it for 50.00. Once I really started looking at it I realized it was not a standard “Kevlar” at all. The ECH from the research I have done is truly LIGHTYEARS ahead of the old PASGT as far as the protection it offers. It’s also brand new (and worth a lot more than 50 bucks. Lol). It’s pretty close to the look of the PASGT but as mentioned it’s slightly “thicker”. Streamlight sells a great light called the Sidewinder Compact II which can be mounted on the helmet. But it needs a slightly “longer” metal clip thing that slides on the bottom edge of the helmet. And the increased thickness means they had to sell multiple pieces of mounting hardware to account for the thicker ECH. One for the standard PASGT and a “bigger” piece for the ECH. The suspension system is ok… except in the cold… the pads I currently have on the helmet are like rocks. I probably just need to wear it a lot more to “break them in”. But overall the new suspension keeps the helmet much more rigidly secure on my dome piece. Great video. Loved the info/history.
Oh and I forgot to mention. I read that the ultra dense polyethylene has a different “buoyancy” than the old PASGT. While I have never tested it… I think the helmet actually will “float” on water. Same thing with the new UHDPolyethylene plates. The Enhanced SAPI (ESAPI). Units like the Navy Seals or other sailors or the Marine Corps doing amphibious ship to shore operations… having more buoyancy is a good thing. Even though with all the other stuff on the plate carrier or body armor… you’re still probably gonna sink like a rock… but your helmet might “float” up so they know where your body is at. I read they also have plates that are “X” plates or XSAPI plates. The ESAPI will not only stop 7.62x54 NATO (a full battle rifle cartridge) but it will stop 7.62x54 AP (black tip) ammo. If that is true and they are making plates that can stop an armor penetrator traveling at those velocities… that’s mind blowing. The XSAPI The actual capabilities of the plate is currently “classified”… but seeing as how we are going to the 6.8mm cartridge for the specific purpose of defeating most body armor on the battlefield at distance… you would expect the XSAPI to at least be capable of defeating that screaming 6.8 round. Armor in the form of plates (side plates, front back plates) and helmets… it’s getting crazy.
That's a killer deal for an ECH. You can always upgrade your pads and chinstrap, check out my high-cut helmet video to see how I set mine up to be very comfortable.
@@angryasianfab I might do that. With the way our Country is going it might not be a bad idea to get back into the “Kevlar wearing” mode. Especially one capable of stopping more than just a handgun round. I’ll check out the video. What kind of suspension/pads do you use/recommend. The straps aren’t too bad… but the pads that are in it are like rocks.

Great info. i way overpaid for my SDS ACH a couple of years ago.
The ECHs we were issued in 2014 had sensors in with a "hub" centered on the top so the science nerds could see if we got a hit with a blast enough for a TBI. Hated that helmet, the hub made it super painful to wear.
I've only seen one of those before. I often wondered if it would jam into your head.

The pasgt can be updated, you can get ach style pads and chin strap kit for like $50. Found a pasgt at a pawn shop for $60. I'm only $220 into it with all mounts and rechargeable walker earpro.
You have to shave the brim down to run any type of modern NVG shroud as well.

@@angryasianfabin european market it is impossible to find us made helmets so here is the thing you have 2 options : croatian sestan busch helmets and denmark protection group ( which is more expensive ) or english made the NEXUS but due to low cost i don't trust them
Any opinion on Hard Head Veterans? Looking at their helmets currently. They do have cheaper helmets assembled in China for cheaper but also have assembled American helmets that are more expensive. I wouldn’t think they’d be that much more different from each other.
Bonus Question: ATE helmets vs MICH helmets. Which is better? Pros and cons to both?
There are some youtube videos showcasing the (older Chinese) HHV helmets that don't seem to hold up to abuse. Not sure of their American line now? I think for the price of one of their US-made ATE helmets you could get a US-made ACH and send it to my buddy at Kustom ACH for a high-cut mod and still come out ahead. I have my old PASGT and I agree. I hated the original system of it, so what I did was that I completely alter the helmet I took out that godforsaken upside down hammock on the inside and replaced it with Velcro and cushion best choice I’ve made I’ve also added rails on both sides of my PASGT . Ant took out that one strap bullshit for the chin strap. I took that shit out and I replaced it with a quad strap. It looks and feel fucking great 👌🥹
The Marine Corps ended doing this with the LWH eventually.
I was issued same crap helmets during my conscrition it was like a M1 steel helmet but with less weight and kevlar made insteal of steel .It was very annoying during military exercises and during shooting range .Due to side protection it was almost impossible to add ear protection ( peltors)

Drill baby drill. They don't do anything special at the factory when drilling holes.
Probably used a jig to keep everything straight.
My conspiracy then is maybe they want to prevent us from drilling holes so that way we keep buying their ventilated pre-holed fast helmets instead for $$$ ;) They don't want us to be smart and add ventilation to our ballistic helmets ourselves.

Some Chinese made helmet are good. You just need to know where and what to shop. Personally I would not since you can get a high quality European or South African made helmets pretty cheap. I would never buy either Ops core since you can get a much better helmet from competitors. PE helmets are just trash.
I bought a medium ech mitch from hardheadveterans that's going to be my go-to. A couple months ago I bought this bullshit Chinese fast ballistic helmet I'm pretty sure I can stop small calibers but I don't have any faith and they also sent me a large I ordered a medium so they kind of pissed me off.

From other YT videos the Chicom helmets can stop pistol calibers, but the back face deformation on the helmet would leave you dead or a vegetable.
It matters some are actually stop 44 magnum and other neither 22
