I primarily used crossguard in my playthrough and this guide is great at giving you the positives and negatives. The stance seems slept on: if you're willing to tough it out for a little to kinda get used to it, the range for swings is so useful and you'll be mowing down fools left and right. Make use of the fact it has the highest defense, if you didn't time a parry right or you're just getting overwhelmed you've got some room to just block. As the guide says, go w/ double blade as a 2nd and only use it when you need the speed for certain mobs bc you absolutely will at some point...the downsides of crossguard can really only be felt in certain mob situations.
My biggest complaint about the crossguard is how tiny the actual crossguard is. Feels like it should be twice as big, especially considering how large the blade itself gets in this mode.
I maybe of the unpopular opinion that while I despised the sequels the cross guard WAS the best thing to come out of it I wish it came from the expanded universe.

I think the most important part of mastering the stance is the very first skill in the tree. You can hold down the button in any part of your standard 3 hit combo to change it, but it will end the combo. When and where to use these really strong attacks goes a long way to mastering the stance. Particularly, I find attack -> charge attack to get the lunge to be particularly powerful, especially if you can change targets to have the lunge interrupt a second enemy.
It moves so slowly, thats the only thing that drives me nuts about it. I can't imagine it weighs that much more than a regular lightsaber, so it just feels super artificial.

People have been sleeping on this style because it's actually insane, the speed dip means nothing when I've been able to mow down bosses like the double rancor and Ogdo family in like 3-4 attempts on GM difficulty, and against humanoid fights? I've beaten them usually on the first attempt say for Ravis and the final boss because that stamina bar just disappears when you take advantage of openings. "No poise or hyper armor waaahhh" my brother in Christ have you ever played strength builds in bloodborne because that's basically what this stance is and there ain't no difficulty select on bloodborne so you guys have it easy. I wont deny the skill gap needed to get used to it but when you do get into that rythmn its really hard to go back to anything else. This isn't a PSA claiming I'm good at the game, this is a PSA to embrace the unga bunga
Cross guard works really well when you use the force-based swings (holding X or square and holding Y or Triangle) usually depletes block meters instantly and one-shots most weak enemies or heavily damages stronger enemies.
You made a mistake here. You said greater cleaving swing and reaching cleave affect the first skill in the tree. They don’t. They affect your triangle heavy strike that you start out with.
When I got the cross guard stance I had double blades equipped on one side and cross guard on the other, I cannot pull out the double blades saber and to get the cross guard to engage I have to hit L1 rather than over on the directional pad…… After making myself mad because I couldn’t get it to switch I saved, quit and came back and it was fine. Just wanted to share in case this happens to anyone else.

So you can hit them while they aren't close enough to hit you. This requires timing and getting a feel for the optimal distances to engage your opponents. But once learned the crossguard can be very devastating. One trick I like to do is to bait an enemy such as a raider into running towards me, and timing my power swing so that it launches just as he gets in range. This will either do a massive amount of health or stamina damage, And in the latter case he will also be stunned allowing you to hit him with a follow up which will most likely break his guard. You just need to be patient. This isn't an aggressive stance. It's a defensive powerhouse one.
The blade is way too big if you ask me. Like stance tho. I think stances should be less blade orientated and more movement. The blade could be the same size as a regular blade and still use slower but more powerfull moves

About the Kylo Ren con: I went out of my way to not see any of the Disney sequels - so his stink isn't all over it for me. I did see Solo though. Biggest gripe was a lot of unnecessary callbacks and nostalgia-bait. Pacing was ok, visually it was nice. Would probably give it a 5 or 6 outta 10.
His was also a normal cross guard saber. It gets janky but this genuinely is based on oonga boonga greatsword/saber styles, hence why it’s also meant to be bigger than even kylo’s saber. As I said it gets janky but it makes sense when it’s based off a whole different sized style of weapon, not just the crossguard. I personally hate that it’s just called a crossguard saber, it’s a fuckin greatsaber being used by a human sized Jedi. (Don’t wanna get into Jedi strength buffs etc) Fave weapon in game by far though
Kylos was a regular length saber just with vents to control the unstable kyber crystal, the one in this game looks more like a huge claymore, like cloud strifes sword off final fantasy

It is very strong against most single opponents once you have mastered parrying with it.

i actually really like using the crossguard stance against the large beast enemies. I find it works better against them than any other stance.

It's focus attack can interrupt some unblockables. It was effective against the Gorocco Matriarch.

On the flip side it feels more realistic when enemies go down to 1 or 2 strikes like a lightsaber should do

For some extra power, use the Ambidexterity perk with Crossguard and swap between stances as you fire off bolts.
