Love these little guys. Right when I got mine they were very active, breed like crazy, clicked all evening and were just a joy to watch. Got a extended power outage at the house due to winter weather and lost them all and most everything else (multi-day outage with no way to heat the house) I'm building a new tank this year and I'm going as huge as I can. 125 gal just for them and maybe some CPD or EPD for the schooling. Going to give the tank a few months of plant growth and some shrimp a head start. But these will be the centerpiece. They're just such a perfect fish.
I purchased 4 and put them in a 65gal (with some fairly larger fish), very densely planted, outdoors. I didn’t think they would breed… guess I had two males the first time 🤣 I’m constantly moving plants from tanks and storing them in 5gal buckets, and found 2 baby sparkling gourami that had been roughing it one of them. I must have grabbed a hunk of guppy grass that had a nest/wigglers/fry in it and they transferred over. I also found a pretty nicely sized young in the 65gal itself… how he survived the loaches and other fish is a miracle. All 3 young were moved to a 10gal with 8 endlers.
You mention f1 and f2, it’s nice that you are outcrossing to introduce genetic diversity back into the population. Genetic diversity is always a good thing, more people should outcross more often.
Was moving some floating plants around and accidentally disturbed a small nest WITH eggs, didn’t know if was there, left it floating in place and put the plants back, but when checked hour later then nest and eggs have gone 😢 will the male find the eggs again and make another nest or just have to wait for them to breed again
The dedication of a father SG taking care of the fry is so admirable. He'll just stay near the nest whole day to take care of them and will chase others away. I had 6 in my 10g, heavily planted and the others doesn't disturb the father which is at the far end corner. Did you provide additional food for the fry once they are free swimming? I was planning to give rehydrated decapsulated brine shrimp eggs.
Very cool. One of my favorite fish. Yes I fed the fry paramecium and green water until they were large enough to accept vinegar eels. I like the vinegar eels because they remain at the surface to breathe so they are easy to find for the fry. Thanks for stopping by and good luck with the fry.
@@BecauseYourFish yeah, not a problem. Pointing it out because I recently found out (a little late) and the aggression/territoriality of the croaking gourami is... significant, even in a 40 gallon
@@MattKeepsFish Sounds like some aggressive little buggers :) I only keep the pygmy as far as Gourami go. I’ve had sparklers kill each other when they are breeding though. My F2 seem less aggressive however. Good luck with the croakers! Thanks again!
Sorry to hear that. Yeah, very small fry that are difficult to feed. Green water, super green, has worked well for me to grow them up to a size that can accept microworms or vinegar eels. A few drops multiple times a day after the fry are free swimming. Good luck, thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
These fish will not clear a hydra/planaria infestation in a day. Not to say that's necessarily impossible but I have these fish with baby shrimp and micro rasbora fry. I'm sure they victimize them, but my numbers are growing.
That was incredible footage of the male embracing the female and taking the eggs in his mouth. Great video!
Thanks Wel-don Tanks!

Best sparkling gourami video on UA-cam!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Blake Gordon glad you enjoyed it. Hope the Gourami are doing well for you!

Wow, l have not seen sparkling gourami breed before! 😂Great footage, looking forward to observing these guys in the future. Subscribed.
Kevin Powell Many thanks!
how to differentiate between the male and female gourami?
Quick note: sparkling and croaking gourami are two different species with size, colour, and aggression level differences
Sure, trichopsis pumila and trichopsis vittata. Often confusion between the two. Well spotted and thanks for watching and commenting!

The sound they make reminds me of "Predator."

Just don't want someone to hear that and think "ok I have a problem I will get these fish and it'll be solved"
