    When i was a kid i used to harvest tadpoles and grow them into tiny frogs for me to release and i fed them infusoria, the recipe was way simpler in the 80s: I just put some lettuce into a jar of water and left it in the sunlight until the water got yellow, then i poured some of that water to my growing tadpoles, it was a fun kid science project!

    so i was wondering how my neon tetra babies would grow up easily without feeding them. guess the little tiny white things i see in my tank are infusorias. thought it was planaria or something
    i never do gravel vacuum and have tone of plants with dead plant leaves. and me trying to feed the babies with egg yolk might have started a infusoria culture without me realizing it.
    and yes just like the video i have a ton of dead looking java moss like ur bucket, of course i have a lot of healthy ones but recently in the corner of the tank a baseball size batch started to decay but i never cleaned it up and guess that also triggered a infusoria boom on my tank lol

    If you’re serious about infusoria, it’s worthwhile to look at a few drops of your culture water under a microscope (one drop at a time) so you can see how many and what kinds are in the culture. A cheap microscope is good enough, although you may want to look for one that lets you save pictures to your smartphone (if you have a smartphone).

    What keeps the Java Moss from dying in that closed bucket with no light?????

    • @Kirby444
      @Kirby444 2 роки тому

      Oh, it's definitely dying-- and as it does so it provides more bacteria for the infusoria to dine upon. It can't live in the dark indefinitely.

  • @spencer5082
    @spencer5082 6 місяців тому +1

    So it just came from the sponge filter I guess? You never said. You squeezed the filter. Then added yeast and that was it. I am guessing it’s the micro organisms from the filter?
    Then the second one, you said “add some java moss to a bucket…”. So they are automatically on all Java moss?
    Then you add the infusioria to the fry tank which already had java moss in it. So why wasn’t infusoria already in that fry tank since you had java moss in it?

I use my camera lenses to see through as a magnifying lens( it's really strong) but I see nothing it's like dead water. The jar is in the window. Around 24 degrees. And aquarium water is OK - fish is living well, breading and so on. It is 4 months old at the moment. I don't use any chemicals except fertilizers macro and micro, no Carbo! THANK YOU!! You are the best. I have been keeping fish for 30 years and your methods are unique. I will try this week-end. Again you are a great inspiration for this hobby, I am very impress by your knowledge and your wiliness to share the good and the bad. I guess big UA-camrs are forgetting that we are learning a great deal from mistake. One that I will share openly is the use of rain water (substitute for RO water). This is a great method if you do not want to invest in a RO system. BUT, be very careful, rainwater can have MAJOR problems, such as pest infestation if you leave your water outside for few days. I had QTY 3 tanks infested with leeches. Nothing kills Leeches, you can through away everything (plants/substrate), boil you equipment (filter/heater/sponge/media), disinfect your tank with alcohol and start all over again, hoping you are not killing your fish and they are not infected. No one will tell you the risk of using rainwater well, here you go! lesson learned, I need to invest in a small RO system. Thank you.

      I know this is a year old at this point but ro water isn't the best for fish cause it's had it minerals removed. You have to re-add them every time, way to much extra work. Just treat tap water with water conditioner. Or let it sit out for a few days with an air stone in it. Spending hundreds of dollars on an ro system just to have to put in more work for water changes is well.... Dumb😅

    How long does it take for a new tank to start having infusoria in it?

    I tried the boiled broccoli and banana peels method and after 53 days still have just a smelly jar of yellowish water.
    I then came across this video and tried to do the same using 1/8 teaspoon of active yeast mixed in a 5.6 litre jar. I squeezed a sponge filter from my Guppy tank into the jar, topped it up with water from that tank and added yeast and stirred it. Left it on a table outside (with lid on) under my awning. It doesn't get direct light but plenty of ambient light.
    After 60 hours it looks like your water at the 10:35 mark - hazy. The bottom is covered in (mostly) white junk which would be the yeast. Middle of the base is brownish but that would be the "dirt" from the sponge after I swirled the water around when I added yeast.
    There are small white flecks floating or on the sides but they aren't moving by themselves and look more like yeast fragments.
    Do you have any ideas why what I tried didn't work?
    Thanks in advance.

    I have a cleaner method that yields better results, no yeast needed ;)

    Just tried the 24 hour method with no success... Added some decaying aquarium plant matter and after a week all I have is cloudy water (which is now turning brown). Hm. Frustrating. But that aside, I wanted to comment on the remark about the cyclops never being able to overcome the population of infusoria in the second method discussed. Given a steady supply of food, any organism will eventually reproduce enough to overcome that supply. Cyclops are no different. There may be other factors limiting their reproduction in the bucket and allowing the infusoria to thrive there, but whatever it is, it isn't the fecundity of the infusoria that is keeping the infusoria going despite the cyclops. Trust me! 🙂
