      Not entirely related, but I thought it would follow up with it nicely:
      In the dark crevices of old Victorian homes, the walls may occasionally turn a deep, dark shade of blue, with vines portruding the floors and windows. In this strange lapse of events, one or more doors of the house will be replaced with portals to the shadow realm. If one is foolish enough to enter this hellish realm, they will be hunted by the elusive sub-demon, the Jeph. One must defeat him to properly escape the realm unharmed. If the Jeph so much as even taps the victim, however, the victim will die an immensly painful death, as they slowly and agonizingly twist and contort cretaceously thin, becoming the vines that regrow in those old Victorian homes. The Jeph is not just found in Old Victorian homes. You might want to stay out of the Laundromat.

    In all my years of making fun of Sonic.exe, i cant beleive i never noticed this plot hole.
    The first sonic game doesnt have a character select. You press start and it just takes you to green hill zone right away. Tails didnt even exist until sonic 2, and knuckles wasnt around until sonic 3.
    And yet this guy only suspected it could be hacked because Robotnik was playable....

      I can kinda see both Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik, mainly because Knuckles would have been playable in Sonic 1 via lock-on cartridge but didn't happen due to palette issues with Knuckles, and Dr. Robotnik is the only other major character in Sonic 1.
      Tails makes no sense in Sonic 1 mainly because Tails has canonically never visited Green Hill Zone as implied in Sonic Generations, which may or may not be contradicted by Sonic: The Dark Brotherhood.

    People don't seem to realize that the whole point of the original creepypasta contest was to make a scary story that was _believable,_ and in most cases, the key to believability is restraint. It has to feel like something that _could_ happen, maybe, somewhere. One of the my favorites was this series of blog entries by a cave diver describing some creepy stuff in a cave that he saw. It ends with him declaring he's going back in one more time to investigate because he just _has_ to know more... and that's it! That's the last entry! It doesn't tell us what happened, but the dates on the entries are all pretty close together and the last one was a while ago, so it's pretty easy to infer that _something_ happened. That's where the best horror lives; in the *inference,* the space between what happened and what it means. Horror is an exercise in the basic human experience of trying to find meaning in a chaotic and meaningless world. The second you get into Hyper Realistic Blood territory, where Demon Sonic is telling me that he wants my soul, you've destroyed all space for inference and ruined the exercise.

    • @bloodyneptune
      @bloodyneptune 4 роки тому +93

      One I always liked was the series about the Search And Rescue Officer thats a lot like that. One that stuck with me was a guy who said he saw a guy with no face, fell into a crevice in fear, and spent the night hearing walking from above where he'd fallen from, and muffled screaming. Thats all, no more details, no explanation, no revisiting, no gore. Just a dude without a face, and the inference that somehow he was also screaming. I still listen to them to fall asleep, but its hard to find ones that stop before the details get so insane theres literally nothing left to fill in with your own imagination. And I think thats _so_ important in horror, whatever you imagine is going to be scarier than what you're going to be shown (or have described)

    Sonic.EXE is a classic, but the _sequel_
    just might be the most amazing thing ever written. It's a detective story in which two cops investigate the "Sonic.EXE Murders," and it culminates with the reveal that Sonic.EXE is actually distributed by the "Cult of X," who worship the ruler of Hell (or, as the author so eloquently states, "not literally Hell, but pretty freaking close!") literally called X. X can only kill people by taking the form of a sonic plushy, which he can only take by forcing them to play a shitty Sonic hack, which is _actually_ a vessel for seven edgy demons with names like "Sorrow Zekido," who manipulates your anger and makes you violent so you'll play the game longer(?). The story is a glorious shitshow of a supernatural mystery and is easily my favorite bad creepypasta ever written.

    When I was in middle school and didn't have anything to do, I would waste time going on quiz websites like playbuzz where the quizzes are all made by users, and I knew full well how terrible the tests where but I took them anyway because they were short and I was kinda curious as to what the result would be. One time, I ran across a test called "who's your creepypasta boyfriend?" or something like that. I figured "eh, why the hell not?" so I took it and the result of the test was that my "creepypasta boyfriend" would be Ben Drowned. And the picture they chose for Ben Drowned was this fanart of Link where he was ridiculously muscular and had his shirt off, but he had red eyes so it would be spooky and whatever. My exact thought when I first looked at this picture was "damn, he's kinda hot".
    And that is legit how I discovered I was Bisexual.

      It’s entirely possible that you, like most folks, had a time of life in which your imagination generously did all the work that stories didn’t, and over time, you developed a memory of all storytelling conventions you’ve been exposed to.
      Through that memory, you developed an intuitive feeling for how & why better stories do a better job of not reminding you of all the increasingly annoying work the stories are asking you to do on their behalf.
      Suppose that storytelling is a game between audience & tellers. In such games, better stories are the ones where the audience feels like an enjoyable game where all the rules are fairly engaged with, whereas the rest feel like the teller was cheating, not really playing so much as accumulating points. Or even straight up lying to your face about what moves they made & what the score reads.
      Bad stories are bad at playing, but when you don’t have a robust memory of both good & bad play, you don’t know where to draw the line between the two yet.
      These stories didn’t suddenly suck out of nowhere, you just learned how to sort them out as noise. Noise that asks too much and gives too little.

    • @wanderingrandomer
      @wanderingrandomer 4 роки тому +3

      That makes sense, I was never really exposed to that type of storytelling at all before then. (Although, I'm embarrassed to admit my age at the time, as I wasn't that young). And I also used to prefer the short ones. The ones that had some sort of urban legend based on a photo or something were the most effective for me.
      Later down the line, there was this kind of subgenre of legitimate horror fiction that came out of it that I also really like, but it never quite haunted me like some of the short stories did.

    In fairness to nosleep, there's still a decent number of good to great stories on there, including one you mentioned. The Lily Madwhip series is supposed to be somewhat comedic, given the protagonist is a little girl who gets easily distracted.
    I definitely do agree with you that most creepypasta isn't great. Hell, I don't even particularly like the phrase when it comes to good stories, 'cause it kind of diminishes the quality by referring to it as a "creepypasta", which is just inherently an unscary term.

    I was born in '98 and have anxiety, so I was the target of the scariness of creepypastas. 2007-2012 is when I saw them and found them scary. I was 9-14 and didn't have consistent access to the internet. I didn't know the lingo and didn't know enough to tell what was real or not. I do say, tho, that learning creepypastas were fake and the slenderman killers incident led me to look into real life horrific events such as true crime and disasters. Which help my anxiety, cause I feel like I can actually prepare for the worst now. So... thanks jeff the killer?

    Honestly, creepypastas were one of the first times I can rememer being actually scared by some kind of media.
    Films were never scary to me because I always understood that it was made for entertainment but when I was like 14 I found a top list video with a lot of creepypastas (the video was by TatsTopVideos if you're curious) and my English wasn't good enough yet to understand everything completely so all I would get was little snippets and key words. I had no idea what creepypastas were but the presentation was so different from anything I had seen before and because I only understood maybe a fourth of what they said my mind had to fill in the blanks.
    I remember many nights where I'd torment myself by thinking about what creepypasta actually meant, what all these images were about and what was real and what was not.
    Because I'm me that actually got me hooked on the concept of creepypasta as a whole and I subscribed to a lot of channels that focused on that kind of stuff at the time and I think that's actually one of the reasons my English improved over the years.
    Even though I think most of the stories are ridiculous now there's still a part of my brain that remembers how scary some of the media associated with them actually was to my younger self (and to this day I still think that Jeff the Killer image is pretty unsettling to look at).
