Filthy Frank is basically youtube's fight club. Like the book, the point got lost somewhere, and a majority of the audience wasn't able to recognize what it was trying to subvert
In my humble opinion (and I've only seen the film so far, so I'm not sure it applies to book that well, but hear me out) the whole point of Fight Club is that your ideas that seem great and might even be great eventually have chances mutate into monstrosity that will take over your life and there will be no fail-safe to stop the inevitable catastrophe. The moment in which Tyler breaks the fourth wall while film itself starts to crumble under its own pressure is the moment when idea becomes ideology in that regard. I can partially agree with the sentiment many people share that most of the fandom does not get the point of the movie by sympathizing with Tyler, but at least up until aforementioned transition point it is by design: Tyler is someone many people will find an affecting and charismatic person, because he's supposed to be, to a point. That's probably why Palahniuk himself has gone on record saying that film adaptation might be better: film presents way more methods to make you feel off about the idea after a certain point, I'd say.
As someone who has only seen a couple Filthy Frank videos, the entire Lore section felt like I was having an acid trip induced stroke. Holy shit, I had no idea how deep this all went lmfao
i literally only knew Filthy Frank from the “time to stop” meme, the lore section honestly is insane. i blinked and he was talking about a fake frank, wth
It's kind of what makes it great. Like was ff disgusting, racist, vile, etc? 100% yes no denying. But it wasn't 'dumb'. Even the 'extreme' videos are meant as parody and satire of UA-cam itself. The entire package (lore, pranks, extreme videos) is in itself a parody and a very very smart and well written one. THE PROBLEM was (and always is with edgy content creators) some 'fans' miss that part of it. They see the racism and disgustingness and think THATS the joke. When in reality when George conceptualized the video that person who is racist, vile, disgusting IS the joke. The joke is that people like you exist. The joke is that at some point to get attention on UA-cam you'll have to go so far as to eating your own vomit because people are so desensitized. The people who are these things completely miss that and latch on because 'he's like me'. The lore just added on to the satire zone he created. It was also a satire in itself mostly of anime if you watch the videos. But shock humor is a hard zone to live in. Eventually too many idiots who don't get it move in and destroy it. Its happened every single time. Dave Chapelle. Ice poseidon. Idubbz. Eventually they come face to face with the scum of their community and have to make a choice. Almost all of them walk away and I don't blame them one fucking bit.
I actually meant that the other way around and realized what the fuck I wrote. I really dig Joji as an artist all around really. Was I fucking high? It's time to stop.
my friend and I call this "irony creep" where you start doing something ironically but because intent is much harder to convey if you only see the actions .... you have no idea it's done "ironically".
I was 20 working at a grocery store and I was talking to my 16 year old friend and he said him and friends were gonna shout the N word during Avengers:Endgame and I just remember how unfunny I thought of it and instantly regretted every gamer moment I've said during my adolescence
I don't understand what people expect when they do shit like that. People are just going to get mad and might end up confronting you. Tell him to watch the stream where Andy Warski got his friend arrested. I think that's the perfect example of that shit going wrong.
I used to say "epic" ironically, in response to something clearly not epic. Then I gradually began to say "epic" to things both epic and non-epic, untill "epic" just became a thing I said.
I couldnt stand it in 2018, hated it, but summer 2019 I started doing it unironically when it popped up in the dirtbag left I used to associate a bit with. No One followed me so its just a weird thing I do
I remember watching the “Pimp my wheelchair” video for the first time, right after Frank uploaded it, I was laughing so loud that my entire family entered to my room to see what was all the fuss about, I ended up showing them the video so we could watch it together and surprisingly, they loved it, we all were laughing together even if my mom found it incredibly disrespectful, but we all knew it was acted out by every cast member I unironically cherish that moment as one of the best with my family, nothing but laughs
Zadorien Production’s Sorry to hear that dude, we are mexicans so mexican humor is kind of dark and non politically correct, so I guess that was a huge help as to why we found it funny
JEEVES if Doug ever did, he’s burnt it to a crisp by now. In addition to burning himself out. Whatever a creator thinks or feels will always be magnified a hundred times in their work - if I’m burned out on NC videos, I’m guessing Doug is enjoying them much less than I do.
And not being gay enough to follow through on the promise the moustache makes. Only real men can wear that moustache, real men who are, as ancient Greeks, unafraid of showing their manliness via the art of having platonic sex with another man. Or boy. Turns out the past was pretty fucking rapey. What was this about originally?
I literally had no idea who joji was and I playing slow dancing in the dark for my boyfriend and he flipped out (he was a big fan, he even bought his book lol)
This is easily my favorite fallen titans yet. He didn’t fall. He won. And he got to move on to doing more great things. You’ve also explained the lore way better than anyone else ever has so THANK YOU
Everyone, including me, misses him. But the fact doing what we love hurts him, makes me feel that it's better for Joji to be happy instead of suffering.
J Prez sure you can be a whiny baby about random Internet personalities if you want but don't get all pissy when someone says you're being over dramatic because you are. You and the other two clowns butthurt about the one dude just wanting content are the people I'm talking about. Go be Internet Morality Police somewhere I can't see you.
That took me back. Like, god damn... That chorus was actually incredibly poignant. It was at that moment I truly understood and appreciated him for who he really was.
The new iDubbbz video (about how his fans think he should be a massive misogynist and tell his girlfriend what to do with her own body) is giving big Filthy Frank vibes along these lines. He's realising, "Hey I cultivated a really shit fanbase based on thinking nothing matters and being awful to everyone, maybe that was bad and I should get away from it" And they are PISSED that he's showing that he actually cares about things and seems to be genuinely hurt about it all. It's got to be such a shitty place to be in where such shitheads can basically dictate your income based on their own shitheadedness, whether you sowed those seeds or not
Te Taonga Kororā I’d love to know Quintons thoughts on the SIMP idubbz debacle. The whole situation is so dumb and while I’m sure he doesn’t really give a shit I’d love to hear his thoughts.
I stopped watching Ian's content in like 2018 since I was done with edgy youtubers, but I always felt that Ian was sick of his fanbase and their expectation of him being edgy unironically. His shift towards weird and bizarre content at the time really seemed like he wants to get rid of that but still make videos. The whole "gf has an onlyfans" debacle really takes the mask of his fanbase and I wouldn't be surprised if Ian just does something to say fuck off to them
Man yeah i was thinking about this throughout the video. First time I heard this shit brought up it was about alt righters and neo nazis, and how when you build a fanbase that's there to see you constantly squash caring about peoples Feelings and whatnot, the moment you get hurt, well, you've got an audience of hungry dogs who are gonna smell blood. It's actually sad to think that even people who've done a lot of harm to minority communities won't ever be able to escape, let alone people who were just going through an edgy phase or trying to make commentary through edgy jokes. That thing in the beginning of this video about the moustache? The earlier we can stop copycats, the less we'll have to dig out of the holes they backed themselves into, but who knows how to accomplish that
Te Taonga Kororā that is not the reason people turned on him. Its the fact that idubbbz has a different set of standards to himself than the people he criticized.
He left at the perfect time. Had he left any earlier, people wouldn't have had any closure and his UA-cam legacy would've completely overshadowed his music career and crippled it. Had he left any later, his content would've gotten stale and even more unfulfilling, the long-term effects of his videos on him would be serious and apparent, and his music career wouldn't have gotten that spark it needed. There was no better time.
That wouldn't have happened at all, he already had been doing music before filthy frank, his popularity as filthy frank boosted his music career since everyone followed him when he went to go do that. If he kept doing filthy frank people would have kept eating it up.
@@DragoonCenten it's not that people won't watch his videos. It's that around that time youtube was very heavy on censorship that it would be too overbearing to Joji.
The part at the beginning of the video about the edgetube thing is really relatable. Ive learned over time that "ironic edgy jokes" are really risky. Look at team America world police. There are countless conservatives that hold it up as something that supports their values despite it moking them. Same with shows like American dad. The main character would say that women only think with their emotions. People in the comments would see it as confirming their bigoted beliefs despite the actual joke being about mocking people who hate women.
The problem with satire of the edgy right wing people out there is that, when done well, it's impossible to tell it apart from the real thing. Which is why you get conservatives praising content that is explicitly mocking them, and why it can still have a dangerous message despite being staunchly critical of that stuff.
I think part of growing up is understanding nuance and other perspectives, being more aware of what you are doing and how it affects the world around you. When you grow in this way the flaws of edgelord humor are obvious, because you are more aware of how this humor affects the people around you.
Patavinity I don’t know where you got that, or what you even think the word “nuanced” means. He was basically saying that “edgelord humor” has a positive in that it questions censorship and an overly glossy view of society, but goes bad when people take it at face value and erase the underlying criticism. For example, making a racist joke can actually be intended as a criticism of people who actually do that “unironically”, but some people (cough cough, 12-year-olds) can’t read between the lines, and just think “guy say bad word heeehee that’s funny”. And they do it too, except now it’s without the underlying critical intent. At least, that’s what I got from it. Who knows if you actually needed that explained to you, or maybe you just call anything you disagree with simplistic to artificially elevate yourself in an argument.
@@EC-yw5hg There's an awful lot of projection going on in that comment. I don't recall him mentioning anything about questioning censorship - where exactly in the video does he say that? I also don't think that can be defined as 'nuanced' even so. What that boils down to is "IT'S BAD UNLESS IT CONFIRMS MY OPINIONS". Where exactly is the nuance in that?
I’ve always understood that sort of thing as an instinctive awareness that subversive behavior kinda needs to have a point in order to avoid “they just don’t get me” ego inflation & hollow rejection of constructive criticism. Inspiring outrage is a side effect of a subversive message, it isn’t a goal worth a shit in and of itself. And that’s where the discomfort comes from, a need to have a reason you can point to if anyone honestly asks what you’re doing. Understanding that the pain you incidentally cause in pursuit of some greater clarity about the nature of social interaction is what makes subversive acts fun & a reminder of how to be true to the self rather than unthinkingly accept whatever “normal” is supposed to be.
"It's not entertaining not because I find it offensive, but because it's not heavily challenging." - what a succinct explanation of the lazy humor of lazy racists
@@Arlesmon you wanna do dark humor don't be lazy about it. Don't make it just being offensive do something with it. Except if, you know, its a joke between friends who understand the cobtext or somethjng
It’s seriously sad that Joji’s fanbase refused to accept him as a human being.... it feel like the edgy youtubers trying to piggyback off his success without understanding what Joji was doing created this horrible mass of people online that is still affecting the internet to this day. Joji is a talented man and I’m seriously glad he’s got a more supportive fanbase when it comes to his music.
I noticed that a lot of former Filthy Frank fans still believe in his ideology at heart, despite claiming they matured beyond it. So even though they display an outward veil of maturity and positivity, underneath the surface the way they think of, and treat other people, is deeply toxic and troubled. They just matured enough to hide it even though they still believe (or were conditioned to believe) the toxic energy of a satirical character.
The fanbase is one of the reasons he got sick of doing Filthy Frank too. In the video where he talks about ending it, he just straight up says his fans stressed him out.
I agree, in the takoyaki episode he mentions how too many of us are on pink guys dick and we need to get off MULTIPLE times. That’s the last rap of note on that channel and that’s not coincidence.
I think this video helped me accept that Filthy Frank is over. I was upset when joji quit because I thought he was forsaking his fans, but now I realize that his fans were ignoring his well being and he needed a way out.
@@dildonius thank you for pointing this out because it is driving me nuts. You can be forgiven for confusing a Van Dyke with a goatee, but those two styles are so different it would be like confusing a Basset Hound with a Rottweiler.
Fun fact In the 8th grade in my English class we had to do this year long project of sorts where we had to read like. 30 or so books. And i read Francis of the filth Meaning i had to type out the plot and characters of the book to my teacher on a google forum
@@kakroom3407 If done right and respectfully it's fine to be honest. Mein Kampf may have been written by a terrible person but there's no denying that it's still an important piece of literature and history. I'm sure professors, at least at University, wouldn't mind reading a well written and thought out analytical essay on the book considering the social ramifications it had and the ways it could be appropriately broken down. Just my two cents though. We shouldn't shy away from history and instead use the book as a learning tool, a reminder of the shit that can happen when power goes to the wrong people.
I feel like super edgy humor has to be both so over the top that it’s obviously a joke and not overdone so it comes across as unfunny or worse, actually serious. Time, place, and people are also important.
Edgy humour is cheap and easy. Good edgy humour actually takes thought and craft to land. The trouble is, so many people just see the punch line, ignore the context and setup, and think they can be just like the talented one by just saying the gamer word.
I feel like good edgy humor comes when someone spontaneously says something harshly true, without necessarily trying to offend. When it's compulsive and unoriginal, its just dull. The former can feel more offensive yet completely forgiven while the latter brings cringe and convinces people you suck.
@@PhantomSekai Not youtube based. I was just making a joke about how much that show's overstayed its welcome. I recently binged a bunch of it with my sister and you can see it start to get shaky as early as season 8.
I don’t know. I think some of it is still entertaining. It still makes me shake my head and chuckle at the very concept of the shit he is saying and doing. Granted the reason I think it’s entertaining is because so patently not me, that there is an alien novelty to it.

@@Kathrynerius Yeah, it's been 8 years for me but there's some things I still can't watch or listen to because they mentally bring me back to my abusive ex. With Mass Effect it's pretty much the opposite though - that was one of the few things back then that helped me to survive.
Me: "That's silly, I'd never be influenced subconsciously by a UA-cam video." Also Me: "You know, I've really let my beard grow out. Maybe I should bring it to a handlebar, as a joke, for a few days before taking it off." Quinton: "I may normalize handlebars and convince an impressionable person watching this to wear one." Me: "..."
The story about you in the car with the “friends” is relatable. I had that with a grade school buddy of mine- it’s kind of interesting how that phasing out happens. The sudden realization that you’ve outgrown a friend or several, hurts and is uncomfortable. Life is weird. At the time, you think something that you’re doing is fine, but when you look back, you realize how destructive certain actions can be.
30:45 This is incorrect. I was there when Frank broke character and talked about his medical condition and the possibility of quitting. The support was actually overwhelmingly positive, and he even started his own vlog channel where he would just hang out with his friends out of character
Although I wouldn’t place it in the same vein as filthy frank, the way some people may interpret Joji and other artists’ work is similar to the fan bases of Rick and Morty and BoJack Horseman. Both shows explore different philosophical beliefs, mainly focusing on nihilism. However, while the characters are flawed yet sympathetic, many fans interpret their behavior as being positive and okay. It’s become such a problem that the shows made episodes making fun of this misconception
Rick and Morty definitely goes for nihilism. But I dunno about Bojack Horseman. Personally, I vastly prefer Bojack Horseman because I think its optimistic overall (especially in the later seasons), rather than nihilistic. But thats just my own interpretation. BJH pushes the idea that people CAN change and people CAN get better, but that its incredibly difficult. Thats optimistic. I definitely appreciated how the BJH writers called out Bojacks behaviour in the show when they saw how people excused his shittiness.
Rowland MS I would say that part of it is that the two use a very harsh critique of the sitcom trope of the constantly resetting status quo to different ends: Bojack Horseman to present someone who has internalised that mindset in a deeply destructive way slowly breaking free from it and creating meaning in a world without intrinsic meaning, and Rick and Morty to illustrate the existential horror of people succumbing to that stasis and treating it as a justification for never learning or attempting to change things. To be very pretentious: The latter is about staring into the abyss until the abyss stares back, as it were, while the former is more about reaching the point where one can imagine Sisyphus happy.
Remember, when you can no longer provide compelling evidence or an interesting argument for why someone should absolutely be vilified or have their life upended for a joke they've made (regardless of how "objectively" funny it may or may not be), you can just call them lazy or unfunny and still feel like you've done something worthwhile! Great job activists, well done
Fun fact: the mustache worn by Quinton in the video is actually called a horseshoe mustache. (Also called a biker or hogan mustache) a handlebar mustache is bird like the one worn by captain hook
I'm so goddamn proud of Joji, man. As a musician myself, I'm jealous of just how talented he is. From 6 years of laughs and hilarious writing, to songs I can sing and cry to in the car.
its always kinda fascinating to me to see videos about "edgy" content, I think especially because I was a really sensitive kid and I was repulsed by it at the time. In retrospect, I think I was oversensitive sometimes-- but I don't regret not getting involved in a lot of it. The amount of my classmates that acted like the 16 year olds you mentioned was really depressing. That said, now that I have the context, I really love the pink season album. it hits hard.
Filthy Frank was always a little too edgelord for me (maybe I was too old) but I'm glad Joji is doing stuff he likes. The guy was crazy influential and I'm glad he stepped away when he realized the audience he was attracting wasn't the kind he wanted.
“I live in a constant state of fear and misery”. That took me back... Like, god damn... That chorus was actually incredibly poignant. It was at that moment I truly understood and appreciated him for who he really was.
the deepest issue with "edgy humor" is that the awful, stupid, horrible people will always buy into it completely and believe it as fact, and even act on it at the worst at times, you really need to think when it truly is time to stop.
Thank you for bringing up Fried Noodles. That song was the first moment I knew that Joji could make it as an artist. That song geniunely touched me and I think it perfectly describes filthy Frank as a project.
I never watched Filthy Frank because it wasn't my type of humor, but this video definitely made me appreciate Joji and his work in a way I would never have otherwise. I'm glad he's moved on to something he really enjoys doing and that isn't hurting him (or anyone else). Thank you for making this! Also, I love your frog shirt
I found Joji as a recommended artist on Apple Music and had no idea he was Filthy Frank. I hadn’t even ever seen a Filthy Frank video (I only ever watched Jenna Marbles and Ryan Higa on UA-cam in the 2000/2010s) but I had a vague idea of him by association. I recently perused his wikipedia to learn more about him because every time I mentioned I like Joji someone said “FILTHY FRANK?!” and I was really concerned there was something I was missing. I had been old enough and capable of knowing who he was but I seemed to miss him while he was active on UA-cam. I am glad I found this andI love this encapsulation of who he was and what he did, it’s fantastic lore for a musician I really enjoy. As always, your ability to summarize and expand on a topic is impeccable.
the issue with edgetube content is the biggest creators, the fallen titans like filthy frank, designed it to be viewed critically. and then the audience failed to understand that.
Hey I just wanted to say that the solid 7 minutes of the opening really just made me realise how much I just enjoy listening to you talk about shit. Like damn youve got a talent for making your videos feel like a casual but important conversation and its just oooh its the good shit my dude 👌
You have evolved in such a perfect way, i would never expect a youtuber to break frpm this edgy offensive humor to acknowledge its harm. Thanks for being one of the few youtubers i can trust.
The whole point of edgy humour is to shock the viewer, Weather you can handle it or not is good because if you can handle it you will brush it off with a laugh and if you can’t handle it, The edgy joke has succeeded in its purpose
Burt C0caine It is humours towards people that understand and share the same humour but when some one doesn’t understand it, It’s all about shock value because the person is unlikely to believe you would actually say what you said
Man... you are definitely great writer, otherwise you would not keep my attention for almost fcking hour. Don't give up on your dreams and if you don't want to do this anymore sometimes in the future you will be able to find something else 100%. You're hard working and talented 💪
I seem to remember an actual good response to Joji's breaking character. Which is why it was weird that he pulled the vid. Could be misremembering, but I just remember people thinking "Huh. Must be really set on his privacy." Though... People weren't hostile, but they did seem to exhibit early signs of the not being able to let go you see edgy alt-right dudes exhibit today.
That was really good, but I wish you touched on The Idubbbz/maxmoefoe/anything4views era some. I like how much you focused on the lore tho, most ignore that part.
My husband and I (on his channel rn) were just discussing that Unus Annas reminds me of that material but wholesome Specifically the videos with max and Ian and joji together
I really enjoyed that era of content. It was satirical, in a way, of eye-catching, vapid content, while also being the pinnacle of that very content: these are a collection of the very best humorists, comedians and satirists on this platform engaging in the most exaggerated, “clickbait-y” behavior possible, all while still allowing each of their individual brands of humor to shine through; it’s really enjoyable for someone who likes these creators to begin with.
The fact that parts of society are transitioning from calling it “the n-word” to calling it “the gamer word” is probably one of the few alright things that’ve come from that words’ existence
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) 乇乂ㄒ尺卂 ㄒ卄丨匚匚 I think so? I believe it to be related to the “heated gamer moment” meme, which I believe originated from pewds on that bridge, but I’m not sure.
honestly the smartest god damn thing ive ever learnt now that youtubers have been doing awful shit is that you need to know when to stop and move on. joji knew when to step down. joji knew that, unlike pewdiepie and others and even celebrities, at some point walk away. youve made enough money. walk away. the spotlight will kill you if you dont know when to step out of it
33:19 He was always here Waiting in the background Dan Schneider hovering over the channel And of course What did Quinton say in the Fred video The video that started the iCarly miniseries? *_”This is Filthy Frank”_* We’re coming back around, to finish the accusations that Joji started. Without Filthy Frank, without pink guy becoming a meme and making Nickelodeon Girls Would anyone on the outside ever got the ball rolling on investigating Schneider? It’s time to end this circle Close the loop Quinton
I loved Filthy Frank’s videos at the time and still think they’re funny. But now that I’m an artist and adult I couldn’t imagine making something like that for years and years. I respect that he could put up with it for as long as he did. Edit: still laugh at that ravioli thing
I remember when Fried Noodles dropped I was a freshman in high school dealing with a seriously shitty home life and suicidal thoughts. That chorus hit me like a ton of bricks and would silence me instantly whenever I heard it, with the exception of softly singing along. It still bums me out a little bit now, but 15 year old me felt a little better knowing a creator I looked up to and admired the talent of felt really fucking sad too. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that Joji, both through his Pink Guy projects and his work under the Joji name, no matter how much of a shitpost it all was on the surface, struck a chord with a lot of kids and helped a lot of them get through some really rough shit. I miss Papa Franku as much as anyone, but I get why Joji moved on and I'm grateful for the time and effort that went into an idea as ludicrous as it was. Also, spotted a copy of Conquest of Bread, fuck yeah Kropotkin
I don’t think Filthy Frank is a fallen titan. He has ascended into a UA-cam cult status that few UA-camrs ever achieve, making a significant mark on UA-cam humor that millions of other UA-camrs follow, albeit poorly. He’s like the Michael Jordan or Lebron James of youtube, that he’s a freak of nature that is a one and done deal. There’s nobody who will come even close to replicating the formula of the Filthy Frank show.
Then again, you need a special kind of lowbrow/suspension-of-disbelief personality trait which is rather subjective. Most people just can't afford to posses it after the age of 20: real world's struggle oftentimes makes you too tired to be silly and then it just becomes a habit. That's why many people won't even look at some of the lower-budgeted creative content, or might not notice "creative" part at all. When people have extreme fatigue there's that odd state when you know that a bit of rest will improve overall productivity, but you can't stop working even after you clearly noticed that your effectiveness dropped: you just drag. No offense, but that's how most people seem to be treating their media, so it's natural that edge humor appealed more to people who still can afford to be in a state of a nearly-constant awe.
But how else will I find people who understand the real me? Who know what I'm going through and will help me by embodying the spectres in my mind and guiding me through life? How else can they hear my thoughts and speak to me through coded UA-cam videos made specifically for me? Normie sheep just don't understaaaaaand .·´¯`(>▂
I remember watching and enjoying filthy frank videos back in high school, and I still hold fondness in my heart for those memories. But it's always been hard to articulate why I was such a fan when I'm queer and trans and neurodivergent. Like, at some points, it would seem to the passing viewer that I was watching myself being mocked. And yet, I didn't feel like I was the punchline. As I've gotten older, liking filthy frank has remained a facet of myself that I keep more of a secret than most things because, I kinda feel like you just had to be there. There was something special about seeing a new filthy frank/idubbbz/maxmoefoe collab drop and then talking about it the next day with a close friend who also watched it. There was something special about rewatching those early music videos over and over until the album dropped. And when I listened to fried noodles, in the context set up by the song itself and the music video, I smiled along through the shared suffering. I felt more comfortable talking about my depression and suicidality when I saw things like this that helped me laugh through it. At the precise time that music video came out, I had come out as trans a few months prior and no amount of external love aimed at me could make me more comfortable in my own skin. I truly did live in a constant state of fear and misery, and I had felt so deeply depressed for so long even prior to coming out that I indeed, didn't even notice when it hurt anymore. I entirely forgot about that until hearing that chorus in this video, played in a very different context than I've ever heard it in before. I don't really know what to say. It's been five years since that video came out, and I hope he's happy with the new path he created for himself. And I don't really know how to articulate this further, but it hurts to remember what a dark place I was in at that time. But it hurts. And I'm noticing that.
Some of these videos to me are like when you find out about a tv series only after it ended its run. You talk about these youtubers I never heard before and that gives me an opportunity to look at their best (and worst) videos and enjoy them in a weird special way as if it was a single well defined body of work without having to follow them in real time.
I may literally be the only person in the world that never watched a filthy frank video only because he never came across my radar and I'm not exactly in the demographic of his audience.

@@alexarias5717 Dis man tried to create an epic story about inner dimensional wars, but on the budget of a broke college student.
@@danielzakgaim2764 it was awesome 😂
Same I was like wtf I thought it was just some guy bullshiting on the internet but not it seems to be a masterpiece of sorts I’ll have to check it out
i literally only knew Filthy Frank from the “time to stop” meme, the lore section honestly is insane. i blinked and he was talking about a fake frank, wth

The new iDubbbz video (about how his fans think he should be a massive misogynist and tell his girlfriend what to do with her own body) is giving big Filthy Frank vibes along these lines. He's realising, "Hey I cultivated a really shit fanbase based on thinking nothing matters and being awful to everyone, maybe that was bad and I should get away from it"
And they are PISSED that he's showing that he actually cares about things and seems to be genuinely hurt about it all. It's got to be such a shitty place to be in where such shitheads can basically dictate your income based on their own shitheadedness, whether you sowed those seeds or not

Same thing with Always Sunny too
Dont forget people admiring rick and treating his philosophy as some kind of deep look into life
People are what they pretend to be, so we ought best be cautious about who we pretend to be.
The problem with satire of the edgy right wing people out there is that, when done well, it's impossible to tell it apart from the real thing. Which is why you get conservatives praising content that is explicitly mocking them, and why it can still have a dangerous message despite being staunchly critical of that stuff.

The mere thought that a FILTHY FRANK VIDEO has been parodied in THE SIMPSONS utterly breaks my brain.
The criticism of edgelord humor at the beginning is really great and nuanced, and pretty much put my apprehensions towards it into words perfectly
Great and nuanced, everything edgelord humour isn't
I think part of growing up is understanding nuance and other perspectives, being more aware of what you are doing and how it affects the world around you. When you grow in this way the flaws of edgelord humor are obvious, because you are more aware of how this humor affects the people around you.
Nuanced? What are the nuances? Just sounded like him saying "IT'S BAD"

Congratulations, you were a decent person as a teen

Same thing happens with a lot of Always Sunny fans.
vein*?
Rick and Morty definitely goes for nihilism. But I dunno about Bojack Horseman. Personally, I vastly prefer Bojack Horseman because I think its optimistic overall (especially in the later seasons), rather than nihilistic. But thats just my own interpretation.
BJH pushes the idea that people CAN change and people CAN get better, but that its incredibly difficult. Thats optimistic. I definitely appreciated how the BJH writers called out Bojacks behaviour in the show when they saw how people excused his shittiness.
ja3 you’re not wrong. BoJack revolves around optimistic nihilism, while Rick and Morty revolves around cosmic nihilism
Remember, saying the n word is easier than writing a joke
Yeah... I guess Nonsequitur is a funny word...
That, too, is what I got from this video
Remember crying into your pillow is easier than crying over the Internet
Remember, when you can no longer provide compelling evidence or an interesting argument for why someone should absolutely be vilified or have their life upended for a joke they've made (regardless of how "objectively" funny it may or may not be), you can just call them lazy or unfunny and still feel like you've done something worthwhile! The Harlem Shake originally didn't have a jump cut?
Huh.
I’d rather joji was doing something he loved than enslaved by edgelords. God speed filthy frank, gone but not forgotten
Fun fact: the mustache worn by Quinton in the video is actually called a horseshoe mustache. (Also called a biker or hogan mustache) a handlebar mustache is bird like the one worn by captain hook
So are we going to address how this Quentin is clearly the fake Quentin as he murdered world renowned hero Multiplication Man

One if my favorite trends is referring to the N-word as “the gamer word.” Or a “Gamer Moment”
so quinton literally lived the Inbetweeners "bus wankers" scene but with the n word lmfao
Ooh Sorry

If written veeeeery carefully, that sounds like an amazing bit.

Filthy Frank was always a little too edgelord for me (maybe I was too old) but I'm glad Joji is doing stuff he likes. The guy was crazy influential and I'm glad he stepped away when he realized the audience he was attracting wasn't the kind he wanted.
If you think that’s why he stepped down then you’re actually delusional
@@thezombienerd123 it was a big part of it, you're the delusional one

i think he just wanted to do music and had health issues. yea he hated his fanbase but that was from the very beginning.
In other words, the Filthy Frank Show was the best anime.
BOO!
“I live in a constant state of fear and misery”. That took me back... Like, god damn... That chorus was actually incredibly poignant. It was at that moment I truly understood and appreciated him for who he really was.
the deepest issue with "edgy humor" is that the awful, stupid, horrible people will always buy into it completely and believe it as fact, and even act on it at the worst
at times, you really need to think when it truly is time to stop.
Thank you for bringing up Fried Noodles. That song was the first moment I knew that Joji could make it as an artist. That song geniunely touched me and I think it perfectly describes filthy Frank as a project.
Quinton is slowly transitioning to Ron Swanson
Only really in looks tbh
A soft nerdy version of ron
qtr >> quint to ron
Oh crap, I was gonna reference him
In no way is Quinton like Ron swanson
I never watched Filthy Frank because it wasn't my type of humor, but this video definitely made me appreciate Joji and his work in a way I would never have otherwise. I'm glad he's moved on to something he really enjoys doing and that isn't hurting him (or anyone else). Thank you for making this!
Also, I love your frog shirt
Gwyneth H I think your one of the few people that actually understand the point of edgy humour and how people like it because it shocks the viewer
That intro is a GREAT encapsulation of how Filthy Frank could be negatively interpreted by stupid teens

I seem to remember an actual good response to Joji's breaking character. Which is why it was weird that he pulled the vid. Could be misremembering, but I just remember people thinking "Huh. Must be really set on his privacy."
Though...
The chef era was probably his most extreme era
Good days
Poon Tsunami the chef era 😂
My husband and I (on his channel rn) were just discussing that
Unus Annas reminds me of that material but wholesome
Specifically the videos with max and Ian and joji together
I bet he's planning a video on that whole thing
I really enjoyed that era of content. It was satirical, in a way, of eye-catching, vapid content, while also being the pinnacle of that very content: these are a collection of the very best humorists, comedians and satirists on this platform engaging in the most exaggerated, “clickbait-y” behavior possible, all while still allowing each of their individual brands of humor to shine through; it’s really enjoyable for someone who likes these creators to begin with.
The fact that parts of society are transitioning from calling it “the n-word” to calling it “the gamer word” is probably one of the few alright things that’ve come from that words’ existence
i really thought he was making fun of the people calling themselves gamers... looks like im the dumbass now professor
How is that an alright thing? associating a racist word to a group of people just because a few of them say it is ridiculous.

I loved Filthy Frank’s videos at the time and still think they’re funny. But now that I’m an artist and adult I couldn’t imagine making something like that for years and years. I respect that he could put up with it for as long as he did.
Edit: still laugh at that ravioli thing
"Ravioli ravioli, what's in the pocketoli"
Even if I don’t agree with Quinton on some of his points his points always make me scratch my skin and go “hmmm, I getcha”

I would make the argument Quinton shouldn't be hanging out with 16 year olds
@@captainjetpack especially if he has that stache
I would make the argument that 16 year olds shouldn’t be on the internet.
As a New Yorker who lived there for my full life a man in a pink suit is the third weirdest thing I would see that week
