HW takes a look at the Mission Engineering Gemini 2. It's a feature rich stereo 2x12 FRFR cab with a ton of options and probably feels the most like a traditional 2x12 guitar cabinet compared to everything else out there. The EmPower knobs lets you go from full FRFR to "Guitar Cab" mode and all the shades in between
What do you think of the Mission Engineering Gemini 2
Great straightforward review with sensible guitar playing. Thanks for posting.
Great video. Between this video and the shootout video, I have decided this cab is worth the extra coin. Seems like the best of both worlds.
Great demo. Sounded especially nice between the two EmPower settings - nice presence but very amplike. I like that the speakers are coaxial with the in-line tweeter as well.
Dude, you do GREAT videos - thanks for the awesome info!
I absolutely love my MG2P! Great cab. By far the best FRFR for the money. And the stereo setup is nice. Not just a wedge.
I purchased the Gemini 2 partly because of your reviews. Was torn between this and the Friedman, but went with the Gemini 2. It really is incredible. It’s heavy, but well worth it’s weight (LOL). And you are spot on about the stereo spread. It’s really cool sounding.
Based on your review I purchased the Gemini 2 - Thank you
How noisy is the fan Jon
Thanks HW and stay cool
Bought the JM Proto pack. F🎸cking Glorious 😎
Thank you
My next big buy. But I'll be getting the studio version with silent cooling. Wish I could afford it now though....
To my ear the full FRFR setting sounds the best, but I have to acknowledge my biases: I love and prefer a very 'chimey' clean sound. Since you are only playing clean channel goodness, it sounds perfect to me that way. I think where my mind would change possible 180-degrees, is if you used even a moderate-high rock gain, let alone an actual high gain metal-ish setting. I'd really like to hear those types of sounds through it to get a better idea of how the expanded highs of the full-FRFR effect the sound overall.
Nice box. I've been using a BlueAmps Spark. It's stereo FRFR with 2-10's and 2 neodymium tweeters. Each side on mine has 180w and a range of 80-25,000 Hz (-6 dB). I believe mine sounds every bit as nice as the Mission. Nothing against the Mission, it looks and sounds great in the video, I'm fine with mine and I've been playing thru it for 3 years. I'm a Helix user but also ran an AX8 thru it for quite a while. There have been arguments that stereo FRFR in the same box doesn't work because there's not enough separation. I'm not buying that, I get a nice fat stereo sound. This Gemini 2 looks like a great deal. My 2 cents.
Great vid as ever ....could you for a tech phobic (who however is a sweet guitar player) how to plug in the Kemper - Gemini ?
Hello HW, I really appreciate this review as I’m considering purchasing on of these. Was the Gemini 2 in this review the one with or without the internal cooling fan? If it did have the fan, how much noise did it make, bothersome or barely noticeable?, thanks for your help!!
Goldie!
Fractal III ONLY way to go!!
I know these sound great but when you make a preset using this cab, is the sound going to FOH the same or close? I've heard the Friedman cab is dead on with what you hear is what goes to FOH. Your thoughts?
does this give a good pushed air feel that a typical guitar cab would have in a room?
Curious how this thing sounds just for playing back music. I'd guess that the Mpower would allow me to shape the tone, but how does it sound just streaming spotify? Does it get you the HiFi width and depth during playback?
Yes B it does. You can hear the cymbals one end and the kick and bass the other and of course you can tweak it via the empower knob.
How’d you hook the Kemper up to the speaker? What are its output setting?
My question about the knob: When you turn that all the way down, when you send a signal to FOH won't it be really different to what you hear on stage and you'll be inaccurate in setup? Also, is there a way with one Kemper to run wet/dry rigs? Or is that kind of moot point when you're running digital? Love running one amp a little wet and the other one mostly wet to get that definition
Hey C. So if you want FOH to send a tone you like from the Gemini to the audience, you would have to mic it. The way you use the empower knob is more situational. In a studio or playing for enjoyment, you set it how you like it (and then record again via a mic in the studio situation if that is the sound/tone you want captured). Live, we recommend setting it where Johnathan sets it at about 3pm on a clock face. this will give you pretty much what the FOH system is putting out, so you can be confident of knowing what the audience is hearing.
How does this kemper to two kabinets? Curious as to quality in general
Cool review. Any particular reason you're mentioning Kemper and Helix mostly and Fractal Axe-Fx a lot less?
Michiel Nijboer realli?
You continuoosly talk about acustica guitar,so ah acoustic amp May serve as an frfr for electric with a Kemper?
Your honest opinion, Would you want two of them to really get the full stereo experience? or do you feel like one is sufficient?
Hey there HW! Great review. Can you tell me what's model number you have there?
Now if Mission would take this concept, add onboard IR's, presets, and MIDI switching, ala the Line 6 Powercab Plus, they'd really be on to something! I love this idea but I don't like the idea of having to go behind the cab and make changes, because I don't really see this as set it and forget it unless you use exactly one tone all the time. The ability to dial in and then save as a preset and recall via MIDI would really take this over the top! Version 2 maybe?
Well then just dial it in for FrFr & use ir's for all your favorite cad sounds. These thing are in a league of their own. NOTHING on the market touches these, AT ALL.
You are right about my biggest complaint with this. The controls are on the back. It is a pain in the azz to adjust because of that. Other than that, it’s great.
Finally, I can say.... watch this space :-)
Man these Geminis are WAY better than this video shows. Even the 1x12 110 watt one is amazing. I suggest you go watch other videos on this cab. It's by far & away the best. And he leaves out MAJOR other reasons to get it. It's an audio interface, YEP, that's correct. It is made from real birch. Of course it has a mega amount of ways to plug in. It also has 2 separate brains that you can use at same time for playing to playback music. Like an Mp3. It also automatically detects if you've plugged in a mono or stereo signal. The 110 watt 1x12 does all of this too. They are AMAZING cabs. And they ABSOLUTELY feel like an amp/cab is in the room. They move alot of air. They are expensive but, you DEFINITELY get what you pay for with these.
How does it sound at low volumes
To obtain 87° separation, how is this accomplished? Are the HF units angled outward? Are you measuring at the edge of the range, meaning: how much overlap within this range is there? And what is the difference in dB between the output at the center of the cab at the aurally significant range of frequencies at 1m? Put more simply, where is the sweet spot?
My other comment: it would seem better in practice to use two lighter, smaller units (unless you have roadies and want to save space!). What real advantage does a birch cabinet have in the FRFR world? Does it not add weight and coloration? I can see how it would be an advantage when being used as a guitar amp cab, and is this better than using IRs?
i bought this cabinet after your shootout vid. love it - sounds amazing! thx for that. i opted for the non-bluetooth version ($~200 less). now i wish i had sprung for it but i can still plug a phone, tablet or mp3 player into the return and alt inputs of the kemper via split cable (i lose the ability to fx loop though - no biggie for me). also, please give me that gold sparkle strat.
Some users criticize the noise of the fan on the Gemini 2, can you tell me if this is annoying in domestic use ?
@@Zazou21140 that fan noise was surprising at first - not much more than an old CPU fan - but i got used to it quickly. to me, it's way less noisy than a high-gain amp's hiss when you have your guitar volume off. the POP when i turn it on & off is a bit unnerving but it's just the driver kicking in. overall, not annoying at all - it also helps me remember that it's still on after i've turned the kemper off.
What is your opinion of the Mission Gemini wedges?
My opinion is they kick serious ass too.
what is this differ from studio KP?
Two Gemini 1s would be better me thinks. Its 30kg, I could not lift that into my car without hurting myself. If it came with a scissor lift trolley (cost around $250) maybe!
If i back al the way ti Guitar cab setting can i use it With regalar head ?
A bit late, but no. It will blow the drivers etc
?? Can you run out a powered kemper to a frfr cab and also run out to pa front of house ??
Little late but, yes you can. Very easily
Yes. You would use the non powered line outs to the Gemini and the powered out to FOH
Get this or wait for the Kemper Kab?
@@ryansnyderstudio So whats you're opinion, I want to know!
I guarentee you Kemper will not make something that even comes close to this. Their cab will be just like every other FrFr. Bland, boring & separate speakers. GET THIS NOW. LOL
This one or the new powercab 2x12
Absolutely this one. But except sticker shock. Nothing on the market can do or sound like the Gemini cabs.
anthony defabees to be honest I went to the factory in Petaluma California and I really wasn’t that impressed with it. I really wanted to like it , specially because they were super nice everyone at the factory, I have a pair of l2ts and I really believe they are the best or one of the best frfrs out there. Anyway I just got my powercab plus 2x12 yesterday and so far I love it .
Gemini for sure
I just tried a Gemini 1 wedge , I just did not like it at all ! I liked the Friedman ASM12 much better !
All I hear, still, is .... a Kemper.
I believe that's the idea.
Late ! Kemper has arrived but --- Electric Guitar is Dead ..... sin
