I met Joan Crawford many years ago when she opened the Pepsi plant in Birmingham. I remember it like it was yesterday.A memorable experience for a 16 year old back in the 1960s
My art teacher met her once too. He said it was the nicest celebrity encounter he ever had. Joan listened to him throughly, was patient, and even gave him a kiss on the cheek before saying goodbye.
Joan Crawford is very subtle and controlled here until her character knows that she is doomed and hides a terrible secret. Both women gave incredible performances . I don't believe they hated each other as much as people made out they were survivors and at this moment in time needed each other. You can't take your eyes of them and that is great screen acting!
I just bought this on Blu-ray. I haven't seen this since 1975, when I was five years old!!!! I remember my dad watching it. He had a crush on Crawford like no other! These two women were amazing!
the more I watch this classic, the more I believe Crawford should have at least been nominated alongside Davis. Without Crawford, this movie would not work as well as it does.
Wonderful film. 50 years later, I still get such a kick out of it. Davis' emotional transition (spoken through her eyes) at 2:23 from remorseful to revengeful is one of the greatest moments on film. (Davis tops this only once in Little Foxes when she sits on a couch and watches, steely eyed, as her husband crawls out of the room and up the stairs).
I’m so impressed how they both acted here. Everything seemed natural and not rehearsed, like the way ms. Davis put that tray down and slammed the door.
There is no denying that Bette Davis is an absolute master of her craft. However, there is something so captivating about Joan Crawford. When I think of a classic Hollywood movie star, I think of Joan Crawford.
Two of the all-time best performances. I don't know why people compare them; they were 2 totally different types of actors. Joan was more of a Star, and Bette was more of an actress. In today's terms, it's like comparing #JuliaRoberts and #MerylStreep. Both are fine actresses, but Julia is more of a star and Meryl is more like Davis in that she becomes each role she plays, whereas Julia is Julia no matter what she plays. Bette and Joan both gave compelling performances. Sure Bette had 2 Oscars, and Joan had one, but Joan should have gotten a supporting Oscar for #TheWomen and an Oscar for #Humeresque. Bette should have gotten another one for #AllaboutEve.
All the campiness aside, these are two solid pros. Notice the take that starts at 2:37. It's a complex take with lots of staging, positioning changes, and emotional shifts, and they really nail it. It's perfect. The film was shot quickly on a very low budget, so they probably had to get it right in one or two takes. Real pros.
Blanche was lying to her sister to make her feel guilty. But she actually was driving and tried to kill Jane but she jumped out of the way and Blanche was crippled. She's the real villain in this movie but we don't find out until the end.
Guys please stop comparing there two living legends. I love Bette Davis' over acting here as it is appropriate to show Baby Jane's mental condition. I love Joan Crawford's (Blanche's) silent suffering for a misdeed of past. I adore both of these actresses. I don't know who was great than whom or what was the reason of their rivalaries with each other. I think both of them were masters of their own crafts so it's unjust to compare them.
Bette Davis is such a good actress that people really think this is who she was, or Margo in all About Eve, or her character in Jezebel, or her character in Mr. Skeffington, or Rosa in Through the Forest.
Davis and Crawford were both sensational. In my opinion, Joan was much better an actress in the 1930's than Davis. Joan's performance in Grand Hotel was wonderful. Joan was beautiful and her acting was natural. Later Joan developed and relied on acting tricks she did not need. Bette was also great. Davis is incomparable in "Eve", "Jane", "The Little Foxes", and Mr. Skeffington. However, Bette's characterizations are so intense watching Bette Davis movies is not always pleasurable for me. I cannot watch more than two Bette Davis films in a row. I think the "feud" really escalated when Jack Warner brought Crawford to Warner Brothers. Joan won an Oscar and revived her career. Bette was at the end of her tether at Warner's. The war was over. Davis had been the queen of women's movies. However, many men did not like her. Bette had had a few dud films. Davis demanded to be let out of her contract and Jack Warner called her bluff. Bette rebounded beautifully in "All About Eve". However, Davis was not lucky in the 1950s. Her film choices were limited and few and far between. Crawford kept making film after film throughout the fifties while Bette's career stalled. Both Crawford and Davis were heavy drinkers. Bette's looks rapidly declined after "Eve" and though she was immensely talented she looked dumpy. Crawford had beautiful bone structure and remained striking and attractive. Joan and Bette were talented and what each one achieved was remarkable. I admire and enjoy them both!
A pity these two women detested each other. During the making of the film, Bette had a Coke machine installed on the set, knowing that Joan's husband was the CEO of Pepsi. In retaliation, Joan had heavy metal rods placed under her long skirt for the scene when Bette had to drag her across the floor, causing Bette to wrench her back. In the beating scenes, Joan accused Bette of hitting a bit too thoroughly. Yikes!
Those sound more like high school level squabbles. Both liked to mess with each other but they didn't outright want to kill each other. That's all Hollywood fodder.
Bette was the best actress. Joan had charisma that drew you in but her acting couldn't compete with Bette. They despised each other. Bette was in love with actor franchot tone and Joan moved in and married him. I think that's when the feud began.
Also, at the Oscars ceremony, even though Bette was nominated for Best Actress, it appeared that Anne Bancroft was a shoo in for The Miracle Worker. Knowing this, Joan arranged it so that she could present the award to Bancroft when her victory was announced.
There are pictures of Shearer and Crawford sometime in the late 1950s sitting at the same table at an event. There was tension between them in the 30s for sure, but I feel like that dissipated as the years went by. Norma Shearer retired in the early 40s and Joan Crawford became an Academy Award winner. There wasn't any competition between them, unlike with Crawford and Davis who were still working actresses during their later years.
If you think about it,Joan was almost a better actress than Bette, she didnt use little things to make it seem like she's so great,She used emotions that Davis didnt use whe needed in a scene. they are both amazing, and definatley in the top 10 best actresses ever
Very true. She built her career on a set of mannerisms. The Davis fans don't want to hear that, but go watch her. She uses them in every film she's in. Every single one.
@@georgegallucci9958 it can be said for all actors obviously but Bette for sure. It’s like it was her style in every film regardless of the role it’s Bette Davis
Blanche really tried to play the long guilt trip. Even if Jane was an alcoholic party animal with no disregard for others. Blanche knew she was to bpame for her unhappiness. How unfortunate for both ladies.

They had so much in common. They were both Aries and both were married 4 times each. Both had daughters that wrote nasty books about them. Both were fabulous actresses. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Having to play opposite Davis meant Crawford couldn't rely on her usual trick box of pouts, smirks and moues. She knew she had to bring her A game or Davis would wipe the floor with her. Davis, for her part, played beautifully off of Crawford's newfound authenticity and intensity. The competition between the two women made them both finer actresses, nowhere more so than in the final scene on the beach, where they each, in their own way, break your heart. 'Then you mean, all this time, we could have been friends?'
Joan Crawford was quite underrated as an actress. She deserved more.
I met Joan Crawford many years ago when she opened the Pepsi plant in Birmingham. I remember it like it was yesterday.A memorable experience for a 16 year old back in the 1960s
How your age? Hugs from Brazil
Did she seem pleasant?

@mrs.columbo1803 ever considered there may have been a large crowd so she wouldn't have interacted with everyone? Idiot comment
DAVIS should have won the Oscar for this one ! A MASTERFUL PERFORMANCE ! 👍👍👍👍💙💙💙💙
Yes, she was great, but Ann Bancroft was greater; such a challenging role.
Joan Crawford is very subtle and controlled here until her character knows that she is doomed and hides a terrible secret. Both women gave incredible performances . There is something truly magnetic about Bette Davis she makes you feel every emotion in this movie at different magnitudes
Dos leyendas del cine..... Inolvidables!! 60 años después esta dupla NADIE se les acerca, la epoca de oro!!
Their behind-the-scenes animosity made for great on-screen chemistry of anger and hostility.

Today it's thought of campy. It wasn't camp back then, wasn't meant to be camp. The world has become more of campy since. 😂
Bette Davis is a legend !
This scene, is absolutely brilliant, the subtle shifts in character.
These are two legends, giving 110 percent, and nothing less.
So excellent! Thank you.
They were both equal -that's why they hated each other
One had what the other lacked. Joan had beauty. Bette had talent. And that is why they didn't get along. Jealousy
