But a few episodes later, Bette is talking about how difficult her other costar, Faye Dunaway, is. She the compliments Joan for always being the first to arrive on set and the last to leave. IRL Joan was an adamant professional and even Bette complimented her for it.
True --- if Miss Crawford had EVER showed up late (or drunk), Miss Davis would've told us all about it. But that's one thing she always said, "Miss Crawford was always on time, and she knew her lines." (That's not real praise for an actor -- a stunning performance is the praise an actor wants -- but it's as much as she'd ever get from Bette Davis.)
Bette Davis herself wanted Susan to play her and I can totally see why. Sarandon was outstanding and should have won an Emmy for her delivery. She needs to be on more Ryan Murphy projects. She's such a great actress.
In every interview that bette has done where she mentions Joan, she has always stated that Joan was professional. So for her to be portrayed as unprofessional here is quite shocking
She was a professional in a sense that she had a strict regimen on how to do things. Lots of directors have stated that she was drunk a lot on set in her later years, but she was still able to pull through and finish scenes.
Arikm7 and btw if joan did not campaign against bette in the oscars she could pay her 2 MILLION DOLLARS dept to PEPSI (WHICH IS REALLY A LOT OF MONEY IN THE 50'S AND 60'S BUT I KNOW THAT AMOUNT IS STILL A LOT BUT IN THOSE TIMES IT'S LIKE 10 MIL) and not forced to sell her home in california and new york and some of her jewelry that her late husband gave her.
The real Crawford did look quite striking in this scene, different to how she looked in previous scenes of the film. She worked the closeups old Hollywood style, which suited the theme of the film with the sisters revisiting their past, though surreal.

red mercury they should've cast Faye Dunaway to play Mamsita! Ha ha ha that would've been a fabulous irony. Or maybe another role just for the sake of the camp-factor. A small cameo would've been fun. As for Sarandon, yes she looks like Davis and that's lovely, but she doesn't always capture her mannerisms or diction very well. Davis spoke very peculiarly. She enunciated each syllable for emphasis. She had a raspy voice. Sarandon doesn't. When she sings whatever happened to baby Jane on the Andy Griffith show , she looks too bored and lazy. Bette did a little bit but not as much as Susan plays it. Your average drag queen would've done a more sterling rendition of that song and dance routine. People like to just say Sarandon is amazing because that's what people do. They adore and admire actresses. They say everyone is "amazing" nowadays. But if you watch critically, and if you know bette and Joan's movies really well from those golden years, you'll see sarandon's performance isn't as spot on as you think. Having said that, I don't hate it. I enjoyed it just because I wanted to see the series and love the subject matter. But well.... no... and no.
The thing is they both wanted the same respect and standing and each deserved it. Just should have never worked together or passed each other in the street.
What they really should have done was just cut the crap later on in life. It's one thing to have competed for film roles and men when they were in their 20s and 30s, but as you get older, just...grow up. This is one of the best mini series I've seen in years and it's always fun to hear about in tons of clips on this website, but if you knew two people in real life who carried on like this...
When I heard about this series, I was taken aback by the casting of Susan Sarandon who was (is) always beautiful. But her performance is impressive. Same with Jessica Lange, who was another bold casting choice.
I'm confused as in the last episode Betts said that Joan was really professional and knew her lines and was on time but she clearly wasn't whenever they worked together
This is what a Narcissist does to others they class as a threat, they basically call out their own behaviour but do their best to try and manipulate the story so it sounds like the other person is bad/unprofessional and not them
I'm surprised that Ryan Murphy would take this kind of creative license with Crawford. Everyone who ever worked with Joan including Bette Davis would say, that despite Crawford's idiosyncrasies, she was always a professional on the set, almost to a fault. She knew her marks, her lines, was never late and one of the last to leave the set at the end of the day. Portraying Crawford as being unprofessional is simply untrue.
They're basing themselves on the "claims" that miss Crawford hated filming locations and she always preferred closed filming sets with freezing cold air conditioning so she could keep her makeup in place. I just wonder if such claims are true, it si suggested she did that in the filming of Johnny Guitar, remember the two colleagues who couldn't stand her, Hayden Sterling and Mercedes McCambridge
Please watch the real Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in their real films. They both did such fine work. Enjoy this for the guilty fictional parody that it is. Like Hollywood having Rock Hudson in love with a gay black actor. Ryan has a lot of fun with a storyline.
What did Joan do there to "look younger" - tie back the skin of her face or something? I remember in the Mommie Dearest movie we once see her with those tight elastic bandages to pull back the skin of her face and lift up her chin (I guess cosmetic surgery came later!) so I was wondering...
@@bjbinmke Yes, I did see the false eyelashes but she also seemed to have been doing something to her face like tying or taping back the skin somewhat (Joan did not seem to have had facelift surgery; it wasn't yet common then). But they did do all kinds of weird things to themselves even then - the series also has a scene where Joan is at the dentist's and admits she had her molars extracted to have more pronounced cheekbones. And I did hear in relation to another movie that this taping back of the skin of the face (while hiding the tapes near the hairline) WAS practiced, so I wondered whether Joan might have done it too.
If you strategically tale sections of hair and pull them tight (preferably braided), you can have the effect of a temporary facelift. I think Madonna did it for the video to Hung Up. It's painful and, if done repeatedly, can lead to traction alopecia, but it's easily hidden under other sections of hair.
It’s an old actress trick to remove wrinkles like a temporary facelift, where you take two pieces of string tape them on either side of the face close to the hair line, then pull them back tight and tie ths ends together. The string is hidden in the hair or under the wig.
If you listened to what Aldrich actually said, and English is your native language you would know. He said "let me show you where you will be dying" meaning it was the spot where she will slowly be doing it but not actually die. Had he said "let me show you where you die" it would imply a finality. THEN it would be proof that Blanche actually dies. Personally, I've always believed that the police reached her in time to save her.
I assume this is the same beach that the original Baby Jane was filmed on? (Unless it has all been built up since then). One other thing. Bette kept saying in interviews how professional Joan was, but showing up drunk at a shooting is hardly professional.
@@nassauguy48 Carol Ann was a fictitious figure. Joan in fact had a German handmaid whom she called "Mamacita". According to her, they were very close.
I love both icons but I really have to appreciate Bette Davis. She accepted her age with a lot more grace and didn’t let get in the way of her ability to act. Poor Joan wanted to play at being the young woman she was not. She was deeply insecure but that was and still is somewhat an irony among female actors as opposed to their male counterparts in mainstream movies.
The actresses did great in this and I couldn't help but to feel sad because Joan's condition is. Ugh, they made it like shes a bad person but its okay,i love em bothh
On paper it shouldn't have been a successful film at all, but the stars carried the film. They have done a very good job with the reconstruction and the atmosphere on set.
Correct. Susan's hair and makeup is wrong. Bette looked like the joker from Batman and was a total hag. Sarandon's wig is too perfect and pretty. These are subtleties which are important in film making. Bette really made herself look damn ugly and hideous. Her fearlessness is what made her such a great actress. Joan looks way too glamorous and young in the beach scene and she didn't look like that at all in the actual movie. Joan has wrinkles by then but Lange has a smooth botoxed face- Joan didn't at all. She was an alcoholic and depressed. More subtleties that were overlooked and not played /camped up properly by the directors or actors here.
Real Joan wouldn't have had to resort to this as she was naturally beautiful in her 50s. Well and then of course the whole drinking on the set thing might be highly exaggerated or not accurate at all.
Sarandon nailed Davis...but I cannot say the same for Lange as Crawford. Dunaway's turn in Mommie Dearest cast a shadow over Lange that she cannot get out of.
I totally agree, when I watched the series, I thought the same of Sarandon, her eyes, her expressions, the Betty Davis demeanor came through. On the other hand, Lang's features and expressions were so not Joan Crawford.
These women were passed their prime not like today older women still working. It was different times. People didn't want to see them BUT together they were brilliant shame they didn't want to go on an make more films together. Give the public wjaay they wanted. But NO. THE EGO GETS IN THE WAY
I wonder if Christina hadn't have cane out with Mommy Dearest would be making these assumptions about Joan? Defending Joan watch it on UA-cam. There is something not right about the book coming out after Joan's death. The ultimate revenge to destroy a reputation after someone so strong is deceased.
At least Joan didn't have to go on tv and sing that ridiculous song "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? ". Bette did. I don't know if she bitched about it, but she was a good sport.
It was well known that back then they hated each other and it was all because Betty was in love with a man and Joan threw herself at him and took him from her.. Great clip!
Joan was already in a relationship with tone when Bette came along and fell in love with him. So it was the other way round really. Joan ended up marrying him.

But well.... no... and no.
“All those years have taken its toll”? Lmao 😂 Joan darling.... that’s like the 100% proof Smirnoff vodka bottle calling the whisky bottle drunk🥤
brilliant performances all around. please susan do more episodes of these. i loved watching Feud. i wanted more episodes to watch
Mamacita: Which Water?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 (Do you mean Vodka, Joanie?)🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I would love to see this. Sarandon really looks like Davis!😳
Susan Sarandon doesn't look like Bette Davis at all. It's the goddamn acting. Acting of the highest order.
❤️
This is what a Narcissist does to others they class as a threat, they basically call out their own behaviour but do their best to try and manipulate the story so it sounds like the other person is bad/unprofessional and not them
That story Joan was telling was totally unbelievable. I could see her doing all those things, but never Bette.
Bette always said Joan was always on time. This series is more fiction than fact. But still worth a watch.
"Damn it! Perino's is MY place!"
No LB! I have been begging you, bad scripts bad directors!
@@Compozzi916 Don't do this to yourself. You're Hollywood royalty!
Just after this, my favorite scene comes but I couldn't find that. Hedda visits Bette and talk about the BUZZ...
He butchered their legacy imo. Zero historical accuracy.
That was a good scene
"I hate this fucking picture." Heartbreaking line because Joan feels invisible.
Lol “all those years of alcohol abuse”. Pot calling the kettle black.
Judy Davis should be an Oscar winner, too!
Please watch the real Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in their real films. They both did such fine work. Enjoy this for the guilty fictional parody that it is. Like Hollywood having Rock Hudson in love with a gay black actor. Ryan has a lot of fun with a storyline.
Where can I watch this whole thing???
Prime Video - but you'd have to purchase it for $19.99 - at least that was the price when I bought it last year.
I Loved!! ❤❤❤👍👍
"FUED"!!!🙌🙌🙌💕💕
You gotta love Mamacita! Which water she asks. In Christina Crawford's book Mommie Dearest Joan favored 100 proof Vodka! She was a stone cold drunk!
Faye Dunaway played an excellent Joan Crawford in Mommy Dearest
You mean played a monstrous caricature of her.
What did Joan do there to "look younger" - tie back the skin of her face or something? I remember in the Mommie Dearest movie we once see her with those tight elastic bandages to pull back the skin of her face and lift up her chin (I guess cosmetic surgery came later!) so I was wondering...
She kept going back to her dressing room to add more falsies.
@@christianealshut1123 I meant false boobs......
So her character DID die at the end of the movie! I've always wondered that
i think it was just something they said in the show since neither the book or movie reveal if blanche lives
I take it that was Hedda Hopper having dinner with Joan.
the projection is unreal. and she looked so sad when he said: "she looks 20 years younger".
2:16 Mamacita keeping it 💯
Amazing acting, then and now.
I laughed my ass off when she said I hate this fucking picture
I assume this is the same beach that the original Baby Jane was filmed on? (Unless it has all been built up since then). One other thing. Bette kept saying in interviews how professional Joan was, but showing up drunk at a shooting is hardly professional.
'I hate this fucking picture" lol.
The make-up dept didnt get either of the lead actresses eyebrows quite right. Close but no cigar.
Does anybody knøw what Mamacita was doing tø the back øf Joan's neck when they were in the trailer?
Tightening surgical tape
Why does she call her Mamacita when she’s clearly German
heaintloveu I think it was a nickname that stuck early on when she met 'mamasita'
I think they said it’s because she visited Brazil and they called all there maids that and she just brought it back and started using it.
Wow, that personal assistant is a far cry from the sweet and gentle Carol Ann in the "Mommie Dearest" movie!
@@orpflo4845 she probably got confused, because that was never a thing here, specially because we don't speak spanish in Brazil
@@nassauguy48 Carol Ann was
a fictitious figure.
It’s a sad and compelling story with some iconic lines. Don’t dismiss the writing just to compliment the actresses. Both can have merit
I Hate this Fuckin picture! True words, but the movie was brilliant
Robert was such a dork!!🤯
Even Hedda Hopper sympathized with Joan. You know it's real when that happens.
It hates you too
Bette on Joan's fake boobs: "I'm not falling on those. I don't do stunts". LOL !!!!!!
Sarandon wasn't hagged out enough
Correct. Susan's hair and makeup is wrong. Bette looked like the joker from
Batman and was a total hag.
It’s true, this show makes Joan look horrible but Bette hip and glamorous which wasn’t the case
Real Joan wouldn't have had to resort to this as she was naturally beautiful in her 50s. Well and then of course the whole drinking on the set thing might be highly exaggerated or not accurate at all.
“So where’s The queen of shiva” 😂
Sheba. She s referring to belquis
kiki. nesrine
Thank you 😊
Jessica is playing Joan right?
Sarandon nailed Davis...but I cannot say the same for Lange as Crawford. Dunaway's turn in Mommie Dearest cast a shadow over Lange that she cannot get out of.
I totally agree, when I watched the series, I thought the same of Sarandon, her eyes, her expressions, the Betty Davis demeanor came through. On the other hand, Lang's features and expressions were so not Joan Crawford.
peter sardina -- And her voice was completely not right. Joan never talked in a soft breathy way.
PungiFungi You are absolutely spot on.
Agreed.
Yeah
This is bullshit. Bette said Joan was always on time, knew her lines and was absolutely professional during the making of this film.
Wow ..Susan looks exactly like the character Baby Jane.Jessica doesnt look like Crawford at all.
Highly favored, that’s because Joan never had to go under the knife.
These women were passed their prime not like today older women still working. It was different times. People didn't want to see them BUT together they were brilliant shame they didn't want to go on an make more films together. Give the public wjaay they wanted. But NO. THE EGO GETS IN THE WAY
Which older women are working today?
i like the fact that at 1;30s they showed Joan putting on her falsies.....
I wonder if Christina hadn't have cane out with Mommy Dearest would be making these assumptions about Joan? Defending Joan watch it on UA-cam. There is something not right about the book coming out after Joan's death. The ultimate revenge to destroy a reputation after someone so strong is deceased.
Loooved this but didnt buy saranden as bette and altho lange was beyond fantastic acting wise i didnt really get her as joan ....great series though!!
I get what you're saying. But could you think of any other actress other than Susan Sarandon to play Bette? she's got the eyes, the voice.
I wish this were more factual.
Great clip!
I think it was Franchot Tone.
yes 1935
Yes, and Joan married Franchot tone, a great Hollywood lover.
Joan was already in a relationship with tone when Bette came along and fell in love with him. So it was the other way round really. Joan ended up marrying him.
This miniseries was great....but was *VERY* inaccurate.....even *Olivia De Havilland* sued over the inaccurate depiction of herself.
What is mamacita doing to joan ?
Can someone explain lol
Tightening her skin back with tape to help her look younger. Instant facelift
