What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? I've Written A Letter To Daddy Bette Davis Joan Crawford English

  • I noticed that the normal clip of this wasn't up, enjoy it in English. Pretty nice for Father's Day. Baby Jane Hudson (Julie Allred) plays the vaudevillian child star at the beginning of the film.
    Julie Allred was an American child actress. Her only movie role was in the 1962 film Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, in which Allred played the bratty, child version of Baby Jane Hudson-the adult version was played by Bette Davis.

      Alice sweet Alice
      The song was popular in Vaudeville because so many men had died in the First World War. That's what the song is about. A child sending a letter to her dead father. It was something audiences could relate to at that time.

    This scene that gives viewers chills about:
    Young Jane having a shaky singing voice, singing about her dead daddy, while her father plays the piano all coerce into the following scenes to introduce what kind of a bratty child and a young mind full of herself...Jane was. Little dis she realize this part of her life will end and Vaudeville will go out of fashion. She did not try to evolve and, in years to come will be overshadowed by her sister Blanch who will be a much bigger star in the movies...then the tragedy struck, from which they will end up living together aging.
    Jane with her horrofying bitterness, Blance who wanted to escape.....then we slowly decide who is slowly descending to mental madness.
    That is what's making the movie beautifully thrilling and timelessly chilling! A movie that is ahead of its time.

      It does sound off, but of course that was intentional. It may sound too low and goat-like for a little girl, but later in the movie, the older Jane sings it in the same key, and it is too high, causing her to strain to hit the notes. This makes it clear that she doesn't understand she is no longer that little girl.

    Kind of an interesting twist. Julie Allred played the young Jane. Her family were Orthodox Jews who quickly pulled her out of show business after this movie was made because they thought the Hollywood scene was dangerous for their daughter. • @nassauguy48
      @nassauguy48 4 роки тому +13

      Young Blanche had a natural talent that would not manifest itself until it really counted: in adulthood. Young Jane was like most typical child stars, pretty much trained like circus dogs while reciting their lines by rote and without any real feeling. When they grew up, they realized that the extent of their talent was seriously limited.

  • @christianealshut1123
    @christianealshut1123 4 роки тому +72

    The view looks at the beginning of the scene say it all - the elder sister's envy because of what Jane and her daddy share on the stage, while she is relegated to the sidelines, and the mother with the pinched look on her face who is aware of what is happening and how her daughter feels. She even tells Blanche later that one day her (Blanche's) time will come and that it will then also be her task to look after Jane.
    I know that as the film progresses, Jane is considered to be the villain because of the vicious things she has done to Blanche - but what has Blanche done to her sister in that passive-aggressive way of hers? She has made sure that Jane will always have a role in every movie for which she is signed up, but this only highlights Jane's lack of talent as compared to Blanche's talent. Not to mention that she herself has caused the accident that landed her in a wheelchair and she makes Jane believe for the rest of her life that she was the one who did it. She framed Jane for a crime she did not commit and practically was her prison warden from that time on.
    So who's the more vicious one of the two?!

    • @EducatingStupids
      @EducatingStupids 3 роки тому +30

      Obviously the dad is the villain, but so is Blanche. She's standing there like a right old misery guts at the beginning and even tried to be all timid and make Jane look bad when Jane demanded an ice cream for both herself and Blanche. Jane, I never thought her a villain at all, just an overworked and abused child who grew up to be a mistreated and abused older lady. Her only crime was that her mind finally snapped and she reverted back to childhood. Up until she killed Alvira, her actions were more childish pranks and lacking thought and consequences, compared to Blanches more sinister actions which led her to believe she'd crippled her sister and felt she was obligated to be her full time carer. Even at the end when Blanche tells her the truth as a means to clear her own conscious as she's knows she's dying, the lovely and sweet Jane's only reaction is not one of anger or rage or bitterness, it is simply the thought that all those years they could have been friends. There's nothing bad in Jane, as I said, she's just a lady who was abused her whole life and whose mind finally snapped. Jane is the victim. In my opinion 😊

    • @christianealshut1123
      @christianealshut1123 3 роки тому +10

      @@EducatingStupids Yes, actually Blanche is the passive-aggressive one and therefore perhaps the more dangerous, and Joan Crawford would have deserved an Oscar for this role, perhaps even more than for Mildred Pierce. But this movie was marketed from the beginning as a "psychobiddy" movie and it heavily banked in on the feud between itw two leads and that perhaps damaged its reputation - unjustly. Significantly, it did not go as well when someone did a remake a few years later and cast two real life sisters (Lynn and Vanessa Redgrave) as Jane and Blanche. It just didn't work because the two leads did not hate each other in real life.
      Now you're saying that Jane's the real victim, that got me thinking that she might have been a victim in more ways than already said...Her precious Daddy may not only have pushed her to be a star - who knows what really happened between them behind closed doors. Girls who are victimized in this way are often treated as "Daddy's little princess" on the outside - it would be another reason for her to become mad.

      Interesting trivia i just found out today Sept 20, 2023. The actress who played baby Jane Hudson (Julie Allred) won the role in a contest. She never acted again due to religious belief and died when she was 57 from diabetes complications. Gina Gillespie, who played the young Joan Crawford did go on to act in a few things including The Fugitive, and became a lawyer. She is still alive and guess what? Today is her birthday. September 20. Totally random accidental find just now.

      Arguably, the father had a strong influence on Baby Jane to the point that he could have been imprinting himself on her long term. Note there were other songs in her playbook that featured "daddy". She was undoubtedly his "favorite" and could indicate an inappropriate relationship. This could explain why she stopped psychologically developing.
