That’s one great about Covid-19 I was blessed with my son on 9/11/20 and haven’t been back to the office since. Today on our teams call I was told I would never have to go back! My department will be at home and can work from anywhere in the world I want to! I’ve got to see my son do everything. It’s lucky and I don’t take it for granted because I know many other dads out there can’t work from home. Use the weekend or vacation time for him. One thing I’ve learned in my short 30 years of life is that something important is happening get out of work for it no matter what the way. Don’t miss something that you will regret for a corporate bigwig that would fire you and replace you all in one sentence!
I’m guessing you’re feeling all the feelings. I’m thinking Van is a spirited man, genius filmmaker who just infected you with profound ideas of what is more important in life. I’m thinking he’s been hunting for adventure with his son and they found a 100 year old message in a bottle from Walter reminding them to keep dreaming and discovering. …the whole world is on sick leave. Go play with your son, damn it!
"Are you scared?" little man asked, "A little." "I'll help you, dad." and his foot was more sure as he said it, and he stepped forward to make good on his word.
I was about to write something along the lines of “omg you pampering and spoiling that kid way too much” and then he asked you if you were scared and that he will help you. That just melted my heart. (Coming from an emotionally unavailable, war and depression infused Easter European upbringing this is very educational - kindness wins. Always). You may not realise this (or probably not even see this comment) but you are not only raising your kid right - but also some of your audience. Made my life a little brighter. Thank you.
Young boys do remember those good times with dad, and later in life pay it forward with their children. Remembering the kids song “Just me and my Dad”.
And the answer was ,”No”. Good call. No joke I ate there yesterday for only the second time. I swore I would never go there again after the first time three years ago. Yesterday I remembered why.

My dad and I have a age difference of 50 years. Im in my twenties, he is in his seventies. He used to always bring his camera when we did something out of the ordinary, all the vacations, trips, festivities and parties. Those tapes are important now, and they'll only get more important during the years to come. I hope that this film you did will mean the same to your son when he grows up and realizes that some things are not going to last forever. Memories in video form will always be more important to me than some photos. Hearing the sounds, seeing the interactions it has a different impact.
Absolutely. It was watching Casey around 2015 about his son Owen that inspired me to film more moments with my kids, not just Christmas and birthdays....the random ones are the best. I film often now thanks to our cell phones always ready in the pockets. Hearing a voices and watching action of childhood is fleeting and precious.
@@canadude6401 Im on the same page with you on that. I think hearing the voices is really important. I lost my grandma a couple years back and happened to find a recording of her singing this little song. It's now a treasure of ours.

I have three daughters and we live about an hour and a half north of there, at the northern edge of the Antelope Valley. Whenever we have a little time and money, I like to take the kids to different places like Griffith park where we can explore the things that have been there forever but they've been somewhat hidden, or at least not advertised or talked about much. I took the girls to the old L.A. zoo just around the corner from the merry-go-round one day after we had been camping up in the mountains. We just happened to find the merry-go-round as we were walking around, trying to find something to do to keep us from going home and ending the trip. We read all about Walt Disney and his special attachment to the park, and about how he would bring his kids and grandkids to the park. We didn't have any cash with us so we were about to head out when a stranger offered to buy the kids' tickets. It was a quiet, calm day and just being in the park with the family was enough for me, but to experience so much family oriented fun in these crazy times was something pretty special. I just quit my job yesterday to start my own company. I thought we were doing alright with the kids but I realized that my schedule had taken away every opportunity to do things like this, so I just quit. Maybe my family will run into yours on one of our future adventures. Maybe we'll get to relive some of our own memories through your videos. Maybe we'll just keep finding new old ways to make this crazy life worth it. Maybe I should get off of the computer and go plan a trip for this weekend.
I knew it was coming, but as soon as you "unveiled" the plaque, some tears came out. And, on the whole "sunday with dad"... man, that brought memories. Used to do very similar things with mine, zoo instead of hoops, merry go round, eating out just the two of us, nap on the way home, movie night /sleepover at his place. 10 years later, my mom passed away, so my dad and my stepmom moved into my house. (I was 15) 20 years later, we still live together, and sundays evenings is just the 2 of us... beer in hand, feet up, movie on. Sometimes we get lucky, and there is pizza.
It’s so refreshing to see a spirited boy adventuring in the world; being brave and curious and full of wonder. Well on his way to becoming a spirited man.

When I was 14 my dad came un announced on a Sunday to take me out for the afternoon. We drove to a shitty area in 1980s Kansas City Missouri and parked the car in front of a derelict factory. My father got out of the car and picked up a nice fist sized rock and threw it through one of the louvered windows. There's no greater love and relationship then a father and his boy. Mine is a year or 2 older then Van's and we try to make videos and memories. I try to be his best buddy and friend along with understanding father when I need to be. I can't help but to constantly think of the future when this relationship falls apart into his teenage years. I'll try my hardest to not let that happen. Then I'll just have all my videos to remind me of what used to be, the buddy I lost because time robbed me.
Van, this gave me incredible nostalgia for when I was a kid. I used to live in the Pacific Northwest and practically lived outside as a kid. The woods that I would explore were abundant with airsoft pellets and I would collect them. I filled an entire 8oz cup of airsoft pellets over a year or two. I wish I still had that cup. It meant so much
What a beautiful piece of America the pacific northwest is, and what a place to call your childhood whereabouts . Lately spent couple of weeks camping and boondocking there . it reenergizes the soul man

dude that bike is great. reminds me of how i learned how to ride a motorcycle in the trails in michigan with my dad when i was in elementary school. learned how to shift and everything on our 1973 yamaha dt250. great vid like always van!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. As a father, whose two daughters are now grown, thanks for the memories, Van.
I always think I don't want kids, but videos like this make me rethink things.
Oh Man Remembering my dad taking me to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk 1972 ....
Thinking how Amazing How come we didn`t do this before now.
The Big Dipper.Arcade,The Merry go round had ring toss game throw the ring into a clowns mouth as you went around.
AAAAAAND MY HEART MELTED AT" I'LL HELP YOU DAD"
Just raw, youthful curiosity. Makes me want to go back in time.
The title and thumbnail don't do this video justice. SUCH BRILLIANCE!
Over the shoulder on the kids bike ride.... Epic filming. It's not watching, more like experiencing.
That was magical!
Wow, from someone who lost a newborn daughter back in NOV, videos and moments like these make me think about where I would be today, had she not passed. I hope when we try again In the future, our kid is at least half as smart as your boy. Best wishes
The Panda Express diversion was highly effective. NICELY DONE.
3:13 him holding the ball is so adorable
and again at 3:23
Became a dad and a widower this past winter. Watching to learn. Thank you for creating. My boy will be one of the good guys.
Fred Rogers liked everything, but he'd like this especially.
Damn .. this takes me back to when my kids were younger ...
Lately spent couple of weeks camping and boondocking there . it reenergizes the soul man
Wow! The world needs more fathers like you.
there are many they just post on YT
I have many similar days with my young son. I do have to often think it is just the small things that are the most fun.
Reminds me of the poignant father-son scenes in Paris, Texas. Beautiful.
These videos with your son are massively heartwarming. You're an incredible father and I have been working on being a Spirited Man for my Spirited Son. Thanks for all you do, Van!!!
