We've all heard the expression "cut through the noise". There is a lot of "noise" out there on the internet, not to mention over-produced content with horrible music and a noisy annoying host. Van brings us back to the early days of UA-cam where is what simple and even soothing to watch. Thanks Van for being one in a million!
Yes yes yes. This is what I want. I mean don’t get me wrong I love the more “podcasty” episodes or sneak peaks into your day to day, but I think you nailed an effective formula in your first ever episode and this is a return to it. (1) problem. (2) design and build solution (3) reveal and explain solution. It’s so satisfying. Keep it up!!!
The clip that stood out to me was the coffin you made for your son. That's the most heartfelt and special gift any four-year old could ever ask for! He will never forget it.
"Does this count as therapy or procrastination?" My answer, based on personal similar experiences, is "Both!" Great work capturing and communicating this, Van!
The best part of this is that some of the only words spoken are "close the door". Nice tip of the hat to the thing that keeps most of us old scrapers working - fatherhood. Cheers Van. Die trying amigo. 🍻
Van Neistat is a genius. I don't know why and I'm not sure what that even means. I just know. When you see his filmmaking, you know he's achieving the artist's expression Tolstoy talks about. And then, after watching the video, you are different, you feel changed.
I really like that door spring return with bearing. You always have such creative solutions. I had my first flying lesson to start process to get a pilot license last week. Definitely wore my Spirited Man hat but didn’t seem right to wear my Spirited Man “Die Trying” shirt. 😀
It's like watching a magician, to me anyway. I'm amazed by Van's talent of seeing a need, visualizing a solution, then fabricating it from common parts. He makes it look so easy. I have close to zero talent with practical stuff like this. I can make a hash out of screwing a lid back on a jar. Which adds to the mesmerizing quality of watching Van at work. Just pure magic.
Best video you’ve made yet. I was transfixed. Not only are the things you create incredible, the angles with which you capture yourself creating them are flawless and non intrusive. Incredible.
That was wild, the emotion I felt when you showed the box I had a feeling it was a casket before you showed it was one. Well done. As always well done.
Wow dude, this video came out of nowhere for me. I don’t know who you are at the time of writing this, but you’d better be damn sure I’m gonna dig as deep as possible until I’m certain I know everything I can about you, until I’m satisfied or too tired to continue, and resign myself to the sad truth that the expertise, craftsmanship, and sheer genius that has produced this level of content is something that only comes from a lifetime of experience, and is something I’ll never be able to replicate. I’m only 1:30 in and you’ve probably sent me into a yearlong bout of depression. THAT’S how good this first 90 seconds is, and I thank you for your efforts, from the bottom of my shallow heart. ❤
He did mention in some previous video the Braun design team leader Dieter Rams, whose work in the 80s and 90s (not today‘s Braun products, those are just labelled) heavily influenced modern product design and e.g. Apple’s design language. There is even a feature film about the persona called „Rams“ by Gary Hustwit, I can only recommend it!
ahhh i love this, no talking, no explanations...the videos to the explaining....i was like hmm why is he putting a bearing in a spring and then it was revealed that it was to shut the door and the "close the door" made more sense!
I have a spirited man brother his name is Benny and he taught me how to use tools. Looking at your videos has unlocked so many memories. He is like a dad to me. He taught me how to ride a bike with no training wheels.
Please continue to document your various projects. I love to see the completely unique approaches you have to solving everyday (and not-so-everyday) problems. You have a beautiful mind.
Nice set of projects. I too suffer from burnout and there are a thousand projects to do where I live. Who cares about procrastanation? This is therapy.
I resonate with this completely! I'm constantly fixing our building things like this to make life more efficient! Love the style! It inspires me to only try more of these kinds of projects....
Im an Industrial Designer and like all Industrial Designers I wish what my field has move attention (even thought we all deal with good and bad design every day ) it feels me with such joy to see you talk about Deter Rams and Braun.
I used to design and sell the 3M VHB tape ... it would vastly improve its performance if you either rollered it before removing the liner or at least ran the back of a knife over it with pressure .... loving these !!!
i believe procrastination is therapeutic if we allow ourselves see it that way. the shots in this were incredible. your artistic voice was present even without any narration. great video, van.
I'd watch hours of this. This is pure Van being Van and I love it.
+
I LOVE IT TOO!!!

This should be a monthly “series” on the channel. I dig this
Shit man. I live this.
Agreed!
Agree 🤙🏽
Concur
I think as long he can put hacks in workplace why not or just small projects he’s needs to do or want to.
I’ve watched all of Van’s video from the first day he posted. This particular episode is in my TOP 5 Van’s UA-cam Videos. Pure genius.
It’s difficult to choose a top-5 Van Neistat video, they are all equally edited and storyboarded, I’d watch them all again
I have to agree. Top 5.

I'm always amazed by how engaging videos without dialogue are--this one especially so.
Van, if you enjoy doing this the most. Consider make more this kind of video. We like them very much.
The best part of this is that some of the only words spoken are "close the door". Nice tip of the hat to the thing that keeps most of us old scrapers working - fatherhood. Cheers Van. Die trying amigo. 🍻
As a professional handyman / tinkerer, I have to give props to that sping/bearing combo on the door closer. Nice work.
That was pretty clever.

watching tis is theraputic procrastination... the best kind of procrastination. and for me this whole channel is the best kind of therapy...
As a shop/studio maintenance nerd I have to say that I enjoyed this video!
I really like that door spring return with bearing. You always have such creative solutions.
I had my first flying lesson to start process to get a pilot license last week. Definitely wore my Spirited Man hat but didn’t seem right to wear my Spirited Man “Die Trying” shirt. 😀
still trying to figure out why X wants a casket for his birthday, but huzzah!
To bury his enemies
Leave it to Van to bless your day with an upload

So innovative, I appreciate these non-narrated videos just as much as the ones that are narrated.

One of my favorites right here man - pure gold
As a proud member of the pre-1000 patreons-club I wanna see more of this!!
why spirited man loves Braun so much?
And he doesn't even shave...
He did mention in some previous video the Braun design team leader Dieter Rams, whose work in the 80s and 90s (not today‘s Braun products, those are just labelled) heavily influenced modern product design and e.g. Apple’s design language.

I really didn't want this video to end

You set the bar high on the Dadding, lovely to see 🌻
Watching Van dig a grave for 4 year old bday present is not something I would have expected.....but at the same time it makes complete sense.

WOW! That's one of the best. incredible
This is *so* satisfying. One of your best.
Less of a story line, but I looove it. Thanks van. I aspire to be like you.
unlike elsa, your soldering job came out looking good!
Panavision sticker on the GoPro! Classic
Only at about 95% complete does the object become obvious, that’s the difference with a “Artist Handyman”. Loved it, thanks.
How did the Neistat brothers all end up with the same craft-industrial aesthetic? Fascinating.
Research Tom Sachs.
I call these kinds of activities “fauxductivity”. You are getting things done, but the effort rarely moves the ball forward
What kind of ball are you trying to move? Where would you like to go?
It is cleansing to watch you create things
The spirited man in me looks forward to these videos.
Not sure how I missed this one originally but it may be my favorite video on the internet
This is amazing. I am so glad i found this channel.
Very much therapy. It was relaxing to watch!

I have the same problem, yours is just more therapeutic to watch! Mines just plain loud and disturbing to my surroundings and loved ones! 😁😂😂😥😊🙏
Bone Reds, man that brought back some nostalgia seeing those.
I used to design and sell the 3M VHB tape ... it would vastly improve its performance if you either rollered it before removing the liner or at least ran the back of a knife over it with pressure .... loving these !!!
That last shot when spirited man was digging.. 🙌🙌..
