  • As a survivor of child sexual abuse, you may have experienced a variety of long-term effects connected to the trauma that occurred in your past. Working to manage these effects and symptoms takes significant work, even with effective healing practices.
    One of the foundational techniques you can use to manage difficult moments is called “grounding.” This technique is particularly helpful as you encounter triggers and the responses they can cause in the brain and body such as flashbacks, panic attacks, dissociation, or acute anxiety. Fortunately, there is a large variety of ways we can ground ourselves. You will definitely find that some of these are more convenient to practice depending on your situation. You may also discover a few that are more helpful to you than others depending on your personality and taste.
    Some grounding techniques involve a more mental approach, whereas others focus on connecting with our physical senses.Remember, the key to grounding is practice, practice, and more practice even when you don’t need to be grounded. Grounding techniques can be your best friend when they become habitual, and in time they will be instinctual. Utilizing grounding skills that you already do every day may make it easier to remember to practice. You may even get to the point where driving and singing and dancing, all at the same time, is your favorite thing to do!
