My son has asd and had speech delays until around 7. He is now 14 and travelling international in debating competitions. He won best speaker a few weeks ago ❤
I just want to give a shoutout and virtual hug for all the worried parents here. we’re all in this together. 💛 please also remember having a child during covid WILL naturally set some things back, life is so weird right now our little ones are trying to adjust to new norms as well. 💛
My daughter had speech delay . She couldn't make up a sentence of 3 words....when she turned six she started to speak very well. Today she 11 yrs and doing well.
When did she say her first word, my son Is 3.9years,but he hasn't talked, though he had an issue with his ear, but I thank God he is beginning to respond
This has relieved the weight off my shoulder.my son is 2.5 years and can’t speak but he does the rest so well.i believe it’s just speech delay. May God answer all our prayers

@@yahir0610 Yes! Actually we speak two language . and he’s learning two at the same time that’s why he’s delayed in speech but in last month he got few more words ✌️ he’s 2 year and 4 months today ☺️
I noticed my daughter at 19 months with the following symptoms -not much eye contact -no name response -no waving -not pointing -no words -started spinning with corner eyes -tip toeing occasionally -lining up toys I decided to take away screen time and replace it with a lot of-face interaction (which she didn’t have before). A week later she started making eye contact and 2 weeks later she started to respond to her name. She also stopped spinning completely as well and shaking her head. She also used to hold on an object on each hand for a big part of the day now she rarely does it. She now high fives and waves. She imitates gestures when we sing nursery rhymes like (baby shark, twinkle little star if your happy and you know it clap your hands etc.) She still lines up certain toys but now she’s more busy exploring the house and more interested in books. It has been a month now and she has made so much progress. She still has no words and doesn’t point yet and on her own but started to point if I point. She would also spin (not excessively) but she would do it almost everyday and now she never does. So now I’m confused if it can be autism or screen induced behavior due to the over stimulation on her brain. (She watched cocomelon on repeat) She also didn’t have much interaction with me since I worked so much and I just feel so guilty. I quit my job and now I’m dedicating all my time to her.
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us my son is 18 months old and as someone who studied special education I think was over thinking his language delay,
I think I was also over analyzing her language/speech delay. It has been 2 months and she has changed so much. She brings toys to me now, she started to understand simple commands like “throw it in the trash” she’s pointing a lot more.
Hi. I'm very intrigued by your comment because my son he's 16 months old watches a lot of tv. I was wondering the same thing. I really want to cut the screen tike cold turkey but my husband is fighting me. My son is doing a lot of the things you mentioned. How's your child doing now?
I love that your desire is to help, not sell a product. Thank you! So informative for those of us who couldn't see it nor recognize it as something more than the idea of all babies are different and develop differently.

Madam my 4 yrs. Grand daughter is not speaking (she speaks only 2, 3 alphabets like Amma, Tata, bye) no hearing problem no autism 3 months speech therapy completed in Mysore Institute of speech therapy & pursuing speech therapy locally in Bengaluru but no improvement. Please suggest further step/treatment.
My daughter didn't really speak until she was 2.5 year old. After that, she suddenly began to speak really really well. It was like a miracle. She didn't really bubble when she was an infant and I was a little worried. Now she is 6 and speaks 2 languages. Maybe it's the bilingual situation in our house that caused the problem.
We need more ppl like you. So glad that you are trying to help others without selling your advice! Thank you so much for being so kind and thoughtful of others!
My son was speech delayed too until he reached 3.2 years old. I suspected it was because he was always watching tv which is in English, we parents don't speak English in the house. It resulted confusion for him. Now he just turned 5, he's very talkative, talks in english & doing very good in school.
We speak Spanish to my son but me and my husband speak mostly English to each other. My almost 2 yr old still isn’t speaking but understand us very well. I think this is also resulting in some confusion for him...
I want to let you know I’ve been super concerned with my sons speech. But after listening to your video I am relieved that he does almost everything that he should be on track even though he is speech delayed . Thank you
My younger brother had a speech delay and suddenly out of nowhere at about 2.5 years old he just started speaking fluently. He is now a man in his 30s! It was just a speech delay. My daughter is 20 months old and I was concerned with her but once she started daycare about a month ago she’s suddenly saying way more words and stringing a few together. Not nearly as worried now.
Wow your comment gives me encouragement. I had my daughter evaluated and they told me it’s concerning that she could have autism because of a 1.5 hr evaluation when in my gut as her mother I feel she just didn’t want to interact with them.
Thank you for this information, its really helpful. My son is 9yrs and had been in this journey when he was 3yrs old discovered that he had delayed speech. Thank God, he can pass some words and do follow instructions. As a mom, I still want to see him developing well, help himself, sharing stories with me. Thanks, South africa

God bless you ma'am. My son is 2 years old and still can't speak I was beginning to panic but you gave me a lot of hope when you spoke about pointing. Hope you have a great day
My firstborn son did not really speak, he was born in 1988, was always watching. I thought perhaps he was deaf, but he was not. A very silent child, very shy. I was told not to worry about his language, "it would come". He was a select mute at school, had speech therapy. He speaks now mostly to his younger brother. He found out the useful word "fine". I was extremely impressed when he came home from his first day of grade 9 and said, without me asking, that he had someone from his grade 8 class in every one of his classes. Also found out later that the football team policed the cafeteria to watch for people who sat alone, and make sure they were not bothered by anyone. Mostly he was ignored, a silent, biddable child. At 16 he was given cognitive behaviour therapy, which allowed him to drive, get a job. He was finally, at age 18 diagnosed as a highly functioning autistic person. I was lucky, no tantrums, but many bullies bothered him, and he is so "literal". His regular music teacher was off on mat leave and the fellow who took over the band practices said, "If you are even 1 minute late to practice, don't bother coming anymore" My son was late once, due to bullying I learned later, and he did not ho back to band until the next year when his regular teacher was there, which I found out much later. My son gets jokes in movies, but he did not understand the replacement band teacher was joking about not coming back. So he is now a master of faking being "normal"as long as conversation is not attempted, other than to point out a mistake, or point you in the proper direction. I did something right, not everything, but some things.
My Parents / Relatives to me when I was a little... I cant walk until the age between 1 1/2 to 2 yrs old and 2 yrs old ive start running around according to my picture and also I cant talk word by word until age of 3 and I cant use phrase and sentence until age 4 but Thanks God I can do whatever I want with a little bit of support.. Im now 24 yrs. and 1 mo. Now and I have mild autism...
My grand children all were quick to learn to speak except my grand daughter, who as a baby was very quiet and was later to talk....even now at 18 is still a quiet person. Some children are just not outgoing as others and take time.
As a first-time mom, I had a lot of questions that intimidated yet angered me from my son’s pediatrician. He just turned 2, but he can’t point at objects (but can use one finger on a phone/tablet), he can’t really follow many basic commands, he has limited speech (he’s in ST and OT), and resorts to whining or crying to get my attention instead of calling me “Mama”. He also tends to enjoy his own company at his daycare and not play with others as much. It gets frustrating for me at times, because he always points out at what he can’t do verses what he can do and say. He wants to get him evaluated, but he said at max, my son would be seen by six months to a year if I’m lucky. But until then, I’m happy that your video gave me solace instead of feeling Mrs constantly being compared to other toddlers his age.

I do cry inside me i remember that day that i felt the miscarriage, i could not hold of my thinking of my son i had just left him at preschool and i was just imargining how he is copying up with out speech, without responding to his name oh God just help us through this dilema
Hullo, your child is exactly like my son. I'm so worried, everything you said about yours is how mine is. I really don't know what to do he is making two years in February. Dis you get some help? I'm so worried don't know what to do
Thank you so much for this video! My son is 20 months and very advanced with fine motor but delayed with speech and lacks pointing. Your video is the first to offer comfort as we wait for our evaluation! Bless you and the work you do!
How if your son now? My daughter is 2 & is extremely developed in fine motor skills but also lacks in pointing so I’m a little concerned after watching this as it’s never been brought to my attention about the pointing.
@@tahleafinn4461 He's doing wonderfully! The pointing eventually came. His speech improved tremendously, too. I was assured it would in our evaluation -- but we also cut screens in January, and that's when I saw the biggest improvement. How is your daughter's speech? I'd bring the pointing thing up to your pediatrician and see what they have to say. Mine was always very reassuring that kids develop on such different timelines. ❤
I have a 25 month old. No words, and I’m not sure he understands any. We are on a wait list for autism eval. No pointing, no imaginative play, when he does play, it’s not how they are intended. He likes to organize things over and over. Runs back and forth and is a toe walker. We have a hard time getting his attention or getting him to look at us. He does take our hand to things he wants. Example, he wants to go outside, he will grab our hand and place it on the door. Not sure if that’s the same as pointing? Anyway, we know some things just aren’t “normal” for toddlers his age. As a parent, it’s so hard to be helpless and not really have any answers or just be able to fix it. He is in speech therapy, and on a wait list for autism eval where we can get him more help. Appreciated your video.

Very interesting. My oldest son only started speaking when he was 3,5 years old. Up til them he knew less than 10 words. Also had very little understanding of language. But he WAS pointing.. He was at 3,5 diagnosed with speech delay, although they never found the cause of it. By the time he turned 7 he had caught up with his peers, and is now a thriving 9 year old. Between the age of 3,5 and 8,5 he had extra help in kindergarden and school. Luckily that plus the evaluations is covered by the government where we live, otherwise we would never have been able to afford it all. (Norway)
My friends son is 4 years old and has been diagnosed with autism for about a year now and your videos help so much with learning new tools to communicate with him because he does not talk at all. My son is 3.5, he just started talking about 3 months ago. He taught himself to read because he loves letters, numbers, colors and shapes. He used to line up cars and other toys. He is not social and he doesn't give much eye contact. I started giving him Bioray Belly Balance and Calm for kids and he still isn't social but he plays normally with toys now, no more lining things up. He used to point at things he liked, like animals or numbers, etc and now he says what they are instead. I just ordered Bioray Focus to see if that helps even more. I also gave him Bentonite Clay for a short time to get rid of toxins and metals.
that is great you have found some things that work for you! I also have free workshops for families regardless of whether it is a speech delay or autism. marybarbera.com/workshops
I highly recommend the Focus also! The first time I gave it to him he actually made a lot of eye contact with me! His vocabulary is growing and he is doing so much better!
I'd love to hear from someone about Bioray products. Do they work and how do you choose which of them your child can benefit from? Is bioray focus good for someone struggling with attention and feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated? Or is belly balance better? How do you select their products? Can anyone please help with advice? Thanks
www.bioray.com/brand/bioray-kids/ This link will explain all their products and what they do. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see them. I order them from Amazon since they are less expensive. You can also get some advice from Amazon reviews. I started with Belly Balance since he was speech delayed than added Calm and now added Focus. I should add that he used to scream alot, especially when he was hungry. The Calm helped with that. He doesn't scream anymore and he sleeps better.
Steve Jobs and Nickola Tesla has autism plus a lot more. Google it you'd be surprised. I don't mind saying my baby has autism. He's in good company. He is 4 and still rarely points. Smart as a whip though.

My godson was slow to speak. There was a history of slow verbal development in the family. We had to wait a long time to get him assessed so he did not receive a diagnosis until age 3. There were lots of recommendations but no help available. His mom had a very hard time accepting the diagnosis because she felt that she had done something to make this happen (she hadn't, of course). She preferred to consider him learning disabled. However, he had clear signs of autism. To this day as an adult, he is able to speak but has significant difficulties with sentence structure both verbally and written. He requires supportive employment and is emotionally at risk for stressful events. This video. is awesome and all parents should be aware of these things.
I have been stressed out for the last few weeks since my lo is 23 months old and doesn't talk at all but she seems to understand everything pretty much all of our conversation and responds accordingly. This video comforts me a little to know that there are no obvious signs, I will wait for few more months to see if she will start talking. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it helps people like me to sleep better :)
My daughter just had a reevaluation for her Speech Therapy and it looks like we’re going to go in to see if she might be autistic. Thank you for your video this is one of the videos that I chose to look at to get a little more Educated on what might be going on with my daughter. Very knowledgeable thank you.
Thanks. I've learned so much through your videos. My son is two and has been with Early Intervention since he was 16 months. He displays many of the autism signs. They will not do an Autism Diagnostic test until he is between 2 1/2-3 years old. Right now he's been labeled with a 30% developmental delay and speech delay. He receives speech, OT and DT weekly. Hoping to learn more and works with him at home. He isn't talking and his frustration level and tantrums have increased with age. He is learning basic sings but will jot use them consistently. I'm hoping to help him communicate better and learn ways to express his needs and wants.
I am so happy you have found them helpful. I think my toddler course would really help you build those language skills and signs with him. Check out a free workshop www.marybarbera.com/toddler-ws
Thank you for this wonderful video. As a mother,I do really appreciate your videos.. My son is 4.5 (4yrs old 5moths). He knows to memorize alphabet from A-Z,can count 1-100,knows the shapes, fruits, vegetables and everything is what he sees he can name that. The only thing is that he has difficutlties of constructing a sentence...Sometimes its frustrating to a mother seeing my son like this..i enrolled him in one nursery school and teachers noticed that he can perform and join acivities/exercises but short span of time only.he sometimes got difficulties of playing around with other kids (I dont know if it's maybe because he is my first bby and he get used to play alone)...
It can be hard to say for sure ! The best thing to do is if you are concerned to get a developmental evaluation. They can help decipher if it is autism, ADHD, something else or just typical development !
my son is enrolled as nursery 2 now.. he is good in school,he can write his complete name, can read sounds and phonics, easy to memorize and he cn answer u if u ask him what is the lesson on that day... the only thing that bothered me is when he is inside the school,he got tantrums sometimes.he likes to lay down on the floor and sometimes doesn't stay in one place but if u tell him to do his seatwork or anything about the lesson he cn answer.. he still dont know how to construct a sentence but I observe lately that he is quite quite aware in his environment. he is my only son and I'm not pretty sure if it is one of the reason y he doesn't like to play with other kids..
I don't have problem with him in terms of waking him up for school.he never complain that he dont want to go school.but when he is inside the room his bhvr change. he seldom play with classmates.sometimes lazy to write .buy when he reach at home,he can be normal kid.

This video helped put my fears aside I was worried my son had autism but thanks to you I figured out his just a slow talker and I can help him get on track
I'm glad you found this video helpful. Thank you for watching! Just make sure to bring any delays your son might have/concerns to your pediatrician, even if you don't think his speech delay is related to autism.
I wish there had been more information like this when my son was young. Preschool teachers said he was stupid. Only one teacher said he was highly intelligent but that yes something was being missed. It wasn’t until he was 10 years old when I read a random article about Aspergers that I saw how he seemed to fit the spectrum and finally had a neuropsychological exam and definitive diagnosis. He is 25 now, married with a son of his own and doing pretty well. I do wish, though, that early intervention back then would have known what to look for on the higher functioning end of the spectrum. I did my best raising him with the info available to me then, and even though my son is still struggling with some socializing issues, I’m glad that other kids are now being diagnosed earlier. Knowing the early signs to watch for and getting help early on really can make a huge difference. Thank you for this video.
May God bless you for being so helpful. I'm going to start applying these ABA for my 3-years daughter. May God bless you, I had no idea, I use to think it is a normal delay but with this video, I've known the real issue.🙏
This has gave me so much info on the things i have been experiencing with my 2 year old. She was born at 26 weeks and of course there is a higher chance for autism. Her vocab. Only includes the word stop and car.

Thank you Dr. Barbera. This is a second video from you that I'm watching. My 31m.o. (i)observes and look but doesn't point. He uses his middle (rather than index) finger to explore new things; (ii)can follow some simple instructions like, "put your bottle on the table" or "throw this wrapper into the dustbin". However, I'm unsure if he is actually understanding the language or habituated to the behaviour since these activities are happening daily.; (iii)imitates his elder brother (5yr4m) in making sounds, reading 1 or 2 syllable words, & starting to have little bit of imaginary play like pushing toy cars around, hugging teddy bear. He has some toys where he is more fixated with (e.g., toys with blinking lights & sounds) but can grow tired of them after awhile and move on to another toy. I have not seen him playing with one toy for hours but maybe a little over an hour.
It is hard to say without knowing him but I do have online courses that may help you even if he isn't diagnosed. Check out www.marybarbera.com/workshops
My son just turned 2 and we suspected autism. He is so on the fence. Definitely has speech delay but he does understand what we are saying. Thanks for the video. Had an appointment with the doctor today for her vaccination. My kid is only two just a week ago. She is scared of the doctor and the dentist and cry often. The doctor said it seems she has a speech delay because my kid should have said "no" rather than just cry and recommended putting her in school for three days to develop her speech quickly. But in our defense, we are talking to her in two language. She points at everything as in asking what things are and so rather than random pointing. She follows all our directions and instrucitons and I believe she has a good understanding of the language. She plays with various toys. She doesn't have anyone to socialize with but we do take her to toddler classes and so forth and she seems to do ok. Thus, this video was very useful.

I genuinely want to thank you for the work that you do 🤗 I especially want to commend you for the education you provide to the physicians for early detection.
I was interested in hearing this, even though my 2 sons are now 33 and 29. I did not know back in 1988 and 1991 that speech delay was an early sign of autism. When my first son did not talk like the milestones stated, this was something I had never heard about, I didn't know you could have a child that didn't start talking like they should. I still am interested in learning about this, even though they are grown up now. Thank you. At one point, they gave my first son a diagnosis of PDDNOS, pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified. I think that was a way of saying they didn't know what to call it.
I really want to thank you for this video. I have twins and one baby started babbling around 8-9 months . This baby was babbling for long periods of time and suddenly by 12 months the baby stopped babbling so spoke with the pediatrician and we got the baby in early intervention ( speech theraphy, PT, OT and now we are looking into special instruction ) . The baby is 15 months and I am working with the therapists to teach her pointing and meaningful playing .. even though she was given the diagnosis of autism at 14 months I requested EI since she was 7 months and I can attest to that all or any type of intervention as early as possible brings great results to a child with or without autism . I appreciate you for saying that kids with autism can have a great adult lives .. thank you for all the information

New subscriber ⭐. I just returned from my first Speech Therapist appointment with my 2y 4m son. I was referred to get a psychological evaluation. I was told that he scored high with play but is significantly behind in expressive language and auditory comprehension. I am super worried but I also know that God forbid he is diagnosed as Autistic. I will still LOVE him no matter what.

@@LilianaPacheco-k7p Hello, he is doing good, he is getting ABA, Speech and OT. It's natural to be worried but just think about it and the fact that you have your daughter....to love on her and play with etc. You are not at a hospital or worse. Be thankful because it can be worse. That's how I stay positive. The therapies will help. You did not say anything about a diagnosis so maybe she just have a speech delay. I pray she is ok and whatever comes just love on her.
Thank you so much Dr. Mary Barbera, for discussing early signs of Autism! It seems almost like a common problem, nowadays and every parent and grandparent worries about their children, looking for signs! Knowing what to look for, gives us peace of mind to seek help when needed!
Thank you so much for this video! I feel very relieved! My son is 2 and doing all of these but we gave in to the pointing and he got used to the fact of handing him things without calling out the names. Thank you so much for this video :)
Thank you so much for this video. I am also a nurse/mum and was so heart broken and stressed out about how delayed my 3 year old is. I will be looking into those 3 steps ❤️❤️
My son is 3 years old about to be 4 in April. He know so many words/numbers/animals/colors but no communication whatsoever. We live in Florida and they did an evaluation and he is going to start school on an IEP. They told me ABA therapy is something they only give to kids with a diagnosis for autism and that since my son hasnt been diagnosed he cannot receive it. I hope school and this IEP will still help him.
Luckily you can learn ABA techniques yourself and work with him at home before school starts or when he is home outside of school. My online courses can help! www.marybarbera.com/workshops will help.
Thank you for the video tutorial. I had a problem with my 4 year old milestone, and with his slow speech, have decided to equip myself with necessarily knowledge and education to improve his situation. Thanks for making the video
Hello mary, good thing to found your video..my son is 3 years old and he can't barely speak but he can say dadi or dede (milk here in the Philippines 🇵🇭)he points if he want something but most of the time he would reach my hand to pick those things especially when he cant reach it..the good thing here is..when you give him the wrong thing..he will not accept until you handed him what he wants..is that a sign of autism..he can express himself but cant speak..thank you so much..

Thank you so much 🙏🏻 we have watched several videos worried about our 18 month old this was some peace of mind and the most insightful explanation we have found. We think we he was just a little behind with speech from 17 months going through a lot of changes like teething multiple back teeth at once and switched from breastfeeding to formula full time as my breast mild dried up during my new pregnancy. Don’t know if he can sense his un born sister but that might contribute to it. And the main thing, not being able to read many facial expressions when people outside the home talk to him during pandemic times with the masks 🙏🏻 try not to worry mums & dads our babies are Beautiful miracle regardless of diagnosis

Madam. Your guidance is really fantastic. My Grand son is 27 months old at present. He is prem baby by about 7 weeks. His weight is 12.7 kgs which seems ok. Now problem is that when he was 16-18 months he use to speak 5 to 6 words( 2 letter). He use to tap his leap with music. Over all it was fine. By passing months he is now not speaking words ( may be 2 - 3 words on some occasions) He shows very much interest in picture books. And to mention he is very active. What is the reason for not talking? Please guide me. We are much worried for our grand son.

@@yahir0610 Yes!
Actually we speak two language . and he’s learning two at the same time that’s why he’s delayed in speech but in last month he got few more words ✌️ he’s 2 year and 4 months today ☺️
I noticed my daughter at 19 months with the following symptoms
-not much eye contact
-no name response
-no waving
-not pointing
-no words
-started spinning with corner eyes
-tip toeing occasionally
-lining up toys
I decided to take away screen time and replace it with a lot of-face interaction (which she didn’t have before).

She didn't really bubble when she was an infant and I was a little worried. Now she is 6 and speaks 2 languages. Maybe it's the bilingual situation in our house that caused the problem.

My son was speech delayed too until he reached 3.2 years old. I suspected it was because he was always watching tv which is in English, we parents don't speak English in the house.
Is she respond to you when you call her with name?

How is he now? My son is 2 and not talking too. Is your son talking now?
He
My firstborn son did not really speak, he was born in 1988, was always watching.

Im now 24 yrs. and 1 mo. Now and I have mild autism...
Do u have this hand flapping as a stimming since you're just a baby?
My grand children all were quick to learn to speak except my grand daughter, who as a baby was very quiet and was later to talk....even now at 18 is still a quiet person. Some children are just not outgoing as others and take time.
Yes, this is true but it is important to act in case it is more.
There is so much you can do while you wait! Join us for a free workshop to learn about our course and community. MaryBarbera.com/workshops for all the information.

(Norway)

Thanks
www.bioray.com/brand/bioray-kids/
This link will explain all their products and what they do.

Thank you for sharing. Happy to hear he is talking !
I have been stressed out for the last few weeks since my lo is 23 months old and doesn't talk at all but she seems to understand everything pretty much all of our conversation and responds accordingly. This video comforts me a little to know that there are no obvious signs, I will wait for few more months to see if she will start talking.

I’m so relieved now my son is just speech delay
That is great.
I hope mine is just speech delay to 😢
Thank you for this wonderful video.
@AmieReamico any updates. Does your son use jargon is he potty trained?
@@laryssa4640 hi Laryssa...what do u mean?.
my son is enrolled as nursery 2 now..
he is good in school,he can write his complete name, can read sounds and phonics, easy to memorize and he cn answer u if u ask him what is the lesson on that day...
the only thing that bothered me is when he is inside the school,he got tantrums sometimes.he likes to lay down on the floor and sometimes doesn't stay in one place but if u tell him to do his seatwork or anything about the lesson he cn answer..
he still dont know how to construct a sentence but I observe lately that he is quite quite aware in his environment.
he is my only son and I'm not pretty sure if it is one of the reason y he doesn't like to play with other kids..
I don't have problem with him in terms of waking him up for school.he never complain that he dont want to go school.but when he is inside the room his bhvr change. he seldom play with classmates.sometimes lazy to write .buy when he reach at home,he can be normal kid.

Thank you for watching and sharing your story. You sound like a wonderful, dedicated mom!

Thank you very much, Dr. Marie Barbera

I think that was a way of saying they didn't know what to call it.
thanks for sharing your insight.
