Me and my younger brother were both diagnosed with autism. He was diagnosed at two while I was diagnosed at 13. He’s 1and1/2 years younger than me so we’re quite close. He is higher functioning socially but lower functioning academically, while I’m the opposite higher functioning academically but lower functioning socially. Most people think of autism as a spectrum that goes from very severe to ‘you’re not that autistic’. When it’s not like that we all share different strengths and weaknesses. What really annoys me though is my religious parents think that changing my younger brother’s name will ‘help him talk’ and ‘fix him’ when that IS NOT how it works. They already tried to ‘fix’ both of us last time when we were younger and ‘didn’t work’. I really don’t want them to change his name and it really upsets me when they think that’ll help when all they need to do is spend more time at home with him, especially my dad. He was never home. It was always work 6 days a week, then cricket 3 times a week, badminton 2 or 3 times a week. When cricket isn’t in season, he goes to my uncle’s house and plays cards every Friday and Saturday now, leaving at 10pm and coming at 3am or 4am. This results him to wake up around 1pm or 2pm. When my younger brother tries to wake him up he’s tired and pushes him away. I just really hate my parents rn.
I can feel your every word in my heart dear. Being a mother already i do believe parents should give their time to kids and that's the best thing from them to kids. I wish you the best in your life ahead. You seems very sensible to me so hopefully you wil take care of yourself and your brother as well. May God bless both of you .
My son has autism, he is 4. The way you have articulated yourself gives me hope that my son will have a fulfilling life. Some times men do not have the tools, every generation must do better. My dad is a workaholic as well. He didn’t have the tools because he was never given the love that he needed. You understand what you need, because you are much more in step with yourself. Make sure you hand those tools down to your kids! Stay strong, work out, it’s a huge self esteem builder.
Thanks for the video. My boy is showing early signs at 20 months old and I've already been making the mistake of overuse of his name. Going to put your advice to practice
This is very helpful... my son likely has it, he stopped talking at 17months he no longer saids any words other than eat he doesn’t even say mama... he takes awhile to come to when I say his name and so I figured he might have it he also flicks his fingers a lot when he’s crying or upset

Now he is just quite and do not say a word at all....they consult different doctors and psychologists but all in Vail...please do you know what is the reason behind his silence...child only use his hands when he need food or water but child didnt say a word.
Thank you so much! I am an RBT, I want to ask, when we are working on responding on name, when he/she is not responding and we use reinforcer to make her/him to look at us. what would be the prompt in this case? independenr responding would be when we call and he looks, but if we use reinforcer what kind of prompt that would be?
Thank you very much for creating and still posting updates in your channel Dr. Barbera. My younger son (2y7m) has symptoms of autism and also doesn't respond to his name. We have been calling his name whenever we require his attention (whether positive or negative). We will commit to being more intentional and conscious with pairing his name to positive reinforcements and the like from now on. What I've noticed is that he picks up better from observational and behavioural learning. We are trying to pair these to words and phrases although there are inconsistencies in his responses and initiations. Anyway, thanks again. From a concerned father of a young child with autistic symptoms.
That will be good to only say his name when things are positive!! I do have a new book coming out that may help www.turnautismaround.com and I have online courses that can help.
@@andrewaupositivepsychology hi there, is your little one diagnosed now? And are things going well ? Is there anything you can teach me as far as name responding , thank you
@@mssophia978 Hi, he is still being followed up by a clinical psychologist and attending speech and occupational therapies weekly. Things are not going well as expected as we have been told that he will not be able to follow the school's academic curriculum. He's 3y7m now anyway, so we are trying our best to help him along the way. In terms of name responding, we pair his name with usual activities that he likes. For example, , go for walk, which means going to the playground. Other than that, we always go to his level (e.g., kneeling, bending or sitting down whilst looking at him) and call him. He may not respond the first time but usually do in the 2nd or 3rd time we say his name. After responding, there will be a hug, cheer, clap, or getting him to do what we are asking him to (e.g., wear clothes, bathe, brush teeth, etc.) - Reinforcement. Over this past year until more recently, he has begun to have more eye contact and even initiates play with us while looking at us in the eye. Although his still lacking in speech, we are trying to use these bids or attention to capture his interest and "plant" useful words for him to take in.
@@andrewaupositivepsychology thank you for your reply, I’m glad he has improve in eye contact and replying to his name , speech will come I have noticed with boys their speech is more delay than girls so he will get there

Hallo I'm from Indonesia, thanks you so much for this videos, my daughter is 3yo and still not talking yet ... very sad when she try to talk to me and i dont understand what she said. ..
Thank you so much for this information. I'm a father of 26 month daughter. Initially due to lack of time, we had to give her an ipad to watch videos. Now she recites all rhymes but doesn't respond to her name and has a very short attention span. Do you have any videos on how as parents should we more approach practical practices. We haven't diagnosed her yet, it is my worry. Thanks!
Thanks for the advice. I’ve been in denial and I’ve been a real pick to everyone (docs, family) as I’m very protective over my boys and I’m really bad at dealing with stuff. My youngest boy is 2 and recently been diagnosed with level 3 autism. I need to learn as much as I can to make sure he has the best opportunity in life. I find it amazing that I have two kids (one with autism) and they both have such different abilities that amaze me everyday and make me proud. I really do think Autism is not a disability, but a different ability. Need to stop saying his name all the time and replace it only when pairing something positive. Let ya know how I go Doc

My 16 months old daughter doesn’t respond to her name at all. I have taken her to the doctor twice but he said I’m worrying for nothing. I was diagnosed with autism and that didn’t help with my primary school as they didn’t care about me at all like I could be doing my own thing and I would get hit on the ground by a kid and they wouldn’t do anything but as soon as I retaliate back they come after me like a 5 star wanted level in gta and it also doesn’t hope the headteacher wanted me to go to a special school and constantly tried to get me expelled and out of all the teachers like 50 ish probbaly less only 5-6 acctualy liked me and wanted to understand and help me now I wanted to kill myself by the time I was in year 6 as that’s when things started to get worse I barely finished my SATS I was put on a separate desk away from everyone the desk was tiny and the chair was big I got bullied about 1-2 times a week and the headteacher told my mum I am a failure and out of all that all I got from primary was the trauma of my past and a mental scar in my brain almost killing my self 1-2 years ago with my mates (I’m 15 now) as all they kept doing to me was calling me autistic and just generally being nasty and it doesn’t help that hardly anyone listens to me anymore my friend I knew since primary doesn’t talk to me anymore I sit my lunches alone on the floor outside and break is the same thing but next to some familiar faces and I don’t even care at this point if they dont want me there I just at least want one time every 24 hours to speak to someone or just be near someone
Hi TheExpertGamer, your journey through primary school is very interesting to me. My son is turning 5 soon and will start pre primary next year. He is already teased for 'not talking properly' at the playground and it used to happen at kindy at the start of this year. Luckily it's only 2 days a week but next year is 5 days and its a regular state school that his 2 brothers go to (they are in year 2 and 3 now). I am so glad you are here because your story is very important and you articulate yourself very well. How are you going now? I hope you are finding enjoyment in life and its good you want to reach out to others. May you have positive experiences along the way 🤗
Brother never lose hope. These battles may seem large but you can overcome and you will see life from a greater point of view! I wish I could be your friend and I know you can do it!!!
I'm so sorry you're going through all that. As awful as it is, I promise these years will seem so miniscule in the grand scheme of things as you get older. It's not ok howthey treat you, and you deserve to be heard and validated. But I know even for myself. When you're in the midst of the storm it feels like it will last forever, but nothing lasts forever. Truly hope you can search out people who have your best interests at heart, maybe a support group in your local town? Either way I am sorry again you're going through all that and I hope you find peace and love
How do you adjust your comments (e.g., "Johnny push") and language in general for older (elementary) students without adding too much complexity? I'm an over-thinker, but I think it's an important nuance to consider that I don't seem to see a clear answer for. I've seen research to suggest that using complete sentences is better than short phrases (when modeling AAC, using sentences but only pressing buttons for key words), but I've also seen other research stating that using telegraphic utterances is effective. Your thoughts?
It can depend on the learner but I like using pivotal phrases (verb/noun combos) and for kids with low receptive language we want to make it clear what part of speech they should attend to. Watch this video ua-cam.com/video/R_nv_7q28WA/v-deo.html
@@marybarbera Thanks for the reply! Sounds similar to an article I read about the use of parentese with babies and toddlers in general, where they said the same thing about it's like learning a foreign language, and it's important to help them parse out when a new word ends and begins.

Another question. What can I do to help my son/toddler so he wont he scared of other toddlers when they want to play with him. He gets scared and runs away or throws himself to the floor. Please tell me.
Hi. Our 2nd child (a boy) is 20 months and unresponsive to his name. It's a strange one. He seems to tick all the other boxes. If you show him a toy and hide it, he'll go and fish it out. He likes closing doors and wants to climb on me and share a hug when I'm playing with his sister (jealousy) etc... but my wife mentioned today, why isn't he responding to his name? He's starting to recite his ABCs and can say mama, baba, oy, yes, oh, but he can't really form adjectives yet like TV, teddy. People questioned our daughter who didn't walk till she was 20 months and was bashing her head on the floor during tantrums. Our son started walking 13 months and running around freely. I will use your technique but it's 5am in the UK and I'm here watching videos, worried about our son.

Thank you for this! Gonna try this with my little brother. He turned 2 years old this month of June and my Mom has been concerned about not responding to his name. So yeah cant wait to try your suggestions on positive reinforcements! You have a point though. I too repititively say his name in a demanding nature. Hoping that he would look at me. There are times when my little brother would respond to his name but only if we are trying to show him something. Rarely does he turn responding to his name.
My son responds to his name sometimes. He knows all his letters, counts to 20, colors, quite a bit of animals and some shapes. I never thought about autism. But the older he gets the more I see certain things in him. Thank you for your videos. We are using them with our son. Our son, ironically named Johnny, has some atypical Behavior that we are trying to correct. Give us on the waiting list to be evaluated. He's already in early intervention and therapy for speech and OT. But my question is with your Technique should we leave the item back to us since they make eye contact when doing this? This way we know that we are expecting a response.
My son is 13 months old but is 11 months adjusted since he was a premature child. He doesn’t respond to his name yet. But he does point and walk and play regularly with all his toys, he babbles a little not very much. Should I be worried?
My son was just seen 2 days ago and the psychiatrist basically said he is on the spectrum. He knows all his shapes..counts to 100. Counts by 2s knows all his colors and alphabets..he knows different animals days of the week the months of the year just sooo much to be 3.5 but he doesn’t communicate his needs and wants. He pulls you to do what he wants and you just have to figure out what he wants you to do. He rarely answers to his name maybe once in a blue moon seriously. I definitely will be trying this method ! The doctor is recommending ABA therapy he has been in speech since he was 2.5 but that has been a very slow process for him i think she isn’t aggressive enough. But he will be starting head start in 2 weeks where they have many resources and help that will come to him which i love. I’m trying to learn as much as possible to get him on the right track!

Thanks dear for sharing your experiences. " Spend more time with the kids " I leant from you.👍🙏
I can feel your every word in my heart dear.
My oldest daughter has autism and this response out of you makes me want to blame my husband of his behavior of not spending time with her since birth
Thanks for the video. My boy is showing early signs at 20 months old and I've already been making the mistake of overuse of his name. Going to put your advice to practice

I am an RBT, I want to ask, when we are working on responding on name, when he/she is not responding and we use reinforcer to make her/him to look at us. what would be the prompt in this case? independenr responding would be when we call and he looks, but if we use reinforcer what kind of prompt that would be?
You could just call it prompted in general.

Carry on regardless, life is like that. I had similar childhood.

Best of luck! I hope it goes well.
My son responds to his name sometimes. He knows all his letters, counts to 20, colors, quite a bit of animals and some shapes. I never thought about autism. But the older he gets the more I see certain things in him. (Hes 2 and a half) He still loves letters, numbers, shapes etc but he makes funny faces, he spins a lot and he doesn’t really care to say other things besides what interests him. I’ve been crying a whole lot these days thinking it might be autism. Just so scared. Do you think it can be autism?
It is hard to say without knowing him but if he can say those things but not communicate his needs then you may want to look into an evaluation.

You can but I wouldn't wait for it if your goal is name response at first.
Hello mam how are u my son has diagnosed with autism I'm very worried about him

My son is 13 months old but is 11 months adjusted since he was a premature child. He doesn’t respond to his name yet. But he does point and walk and play regularly with all his toys, he babbles a little not very much. Should I be worried?
I can't say for sure without knowing him but i'd watch the cdc early milestones.
What's the name of the book she refers to?(her book)

Very good

Your son would be perfect for my toddler course! It sounds like he has a lot of great skills already, too. My toddler course can help you increase his language abilities and reduce any problem behaviors he might have. Attend a free workshop for more information: www.marybarbera.com/workshops.
You got this
Is your son doing good now? Since my son born with more challenges in 26 weeks, now he is 2 year old and not responding to his name and not started talk, walk and less eye contact. We are waiting Autism evaluation appointment, it will help to reduce our fear if your son doing good now.
My son is still quite affected by autism but i know many who were diagnosed at 2 and aren;t. Watch my free workshop for lots of great stories. www.marybarbera.com/workshops
What about if we have to stop them for some work?
We don't want to call children for "work" if we need to get their attention, having something fun in that area can help. Saying "we are going here" without using their name. If you stop them with their name for demands , they will attend to their name less.
Thank you so much for to this I will try this on my sister 😁
You’re welcome 😊
EXCELLENT!! THANK YOU🥰😁✌️
My baby is 3.5 Years old. Sometimes he shows hyperactivity & can't response to me that I learnt him previously. I am going to ST & OT for the baby. Is punishment harmful for the baby? How can I handle him when he didn't response. After punishment he start speaking & response.
I would steer far away from punishment...we want our children responding to us because they WANT to not because they're afraid of punishment. I would highly recommend looking into my No More Time Out mini course on how to tackle undesirable behaviors effectively without punishments. marybarbera.com/no-more-time-out-mini-course/
@@marybarbera Thanks for your suggestion.
Hello Ms./Mrs. Mary. I had a question my son will almost be 3 years old. The doctor told me this looks like autism. My son snaps his fingers while watching something he likes including videos. And he will walk around in circles snapping his fingers. How can I help him to stop snapping his fingers. Please and answer me.
Have you read my new book? turnautismaround.com . It will give you step by step guides to prevent problem behavior.
@@marybarbera Good to know that you have information on that. I will be getting it. Thank you.
What would you do to work on responding to their name with a child who does not have joint attention for more than a second?
That can be difficult, but my online courses can help you learn to engage your child for much longer periods of time. If you're interested, join me for a free workshop at www.marybarbera.com/workshops.
