CORAVIN PIVOT INDEPENDENT REVIEW - THE WINE EXPERIENCE

  • Опубліковано 20 січ 2021
  • My name is Konstantin Baum, I am a Master of Wine, and today I am going to do an unboxing and independent first impressions video of the new Coravin Pivot! I was not asked or paid by Coravin to do this but I have been using Coravin for seven years. The first Model Coravin released is the Model 8 which is a confusing name. Now we have the Pivot which is the cheapest Coravin Model and which also uses a different technique. Pivot means turning point and Coravin is changing their strategy with this product so I am very keen to get my hands on it.

    I began using the Coravin model One a few years ago and it works well. I bought two bottles of Cru Beaujolais, accessed a glass from one bottle with the Coravin One and then let them sit for about 10 months. At our blind tasting of the two bottles everyone found both wines very good, only the most subtle of variation.

    I am 77 years old and I do like to drink wine but rarely much more than one glass with a meal. My wife and I buy half bottles but these are quite expensive compared to full bottles. Also the range of wines in half bottles - even in our very good local wine shop is limited. So I will try a Corvine Pivot on its 60 day free trial offer and see whether I can gradually switch to drinking out of full bottles.

    Cool looking forward to your results and opinion! The other models were to expensive for me. Due to the fact that my wife isn‘t very fond of wine like I am, could be quite useful and I don‘t need to drink the wines in a couple of days. Could be also good for all those online tastings where you need to open couple of bottles at once and can‘t have friends coming over at the moment. 👍

    Thanks to your videos I have purchased both the Pivot and also the model 11 (and of course I have subscribed!). It seems logical - I live on my own, and the Pivot will allow me to enjoy a bottle which is consumed over several days, and the model 11 will enable me to enjoy fine wines by the glass as and when, and put the bottle away for a few months or longer knowing that I can revert to it, or simply open it once tried with friends and finish it off! But with the Pivot, how will we know if the gas has run out? I guess just test it and listen? Thank you for your valued posts!

    I think the Pivot is good for wine bar that serves expensive wines by the glass. Good enough and relatively economical to protect the opened wine for 4 weeks (hopefully it is all sold by then).

    I've been using Model Two for tasting samples, I can't say I'm impressed. I think the wine comes out altered and develops weirdly in bottle (fruit becomes totally subdued) once coravin'd.
    Not to mention if you have less than half a bottle, using Coravin does nothing to preserve the wine.
    I don't know...perhaps the technology on the more recent models is different, but I think it's overall a well marketed gimmick.
    PS: new subscriber, nice channel! I'm working my way to tackle the MW too. One can dream :)

    Excuse me Mr. Baum, I already own the coravin Model 3 but I'm thinking about selling it and buying this one because I have some leakege problems and other minor issues in the pouring.
    I'd like to know just 2 things:
    Is the diameter of the small "tube" where the wine actually comes out the same of the regular coravin model?
    Can i use the Coravin Pivot wine stopper as a normal stopper for, let's say, sparkling wine (without using the coravin to pour ofc, just to avoid leaving the bottle fully opened).
    Thanks in advance for your time.

    • @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
      @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Danio. The needle that you insert in the bottle is sized like a straw (a few mm in diameter). You can use it as a normal stopper but I am not sure whether it will stay in bottle if you put it into a sparkling wine. Stay thirsty!

    Hello Konstantin, I really enjoy your videos. I like to watch how much pleasure you have when tasting wine. You are convincing me to go for a Coravin but I have some concerns. Could you do a tasting of the same bottle fresh, one month, six months, maybe even one year? Also, don’t you think that it would be better to replace the cork with a silicone closure to ensure absence of air entry? Continue being thirsty!

    I have now completed my own review of the Coravin Pivot. I used two identical bottles of wine, a Wine Route Shiraz from Spain ~ a cheap wine. Bottles (screw cap) were opened on 27 March. I used the Pivot on one bottle and simply screwed the top back into the other between tasting. All tastings were blind, ie my wife assisted so I did not know which I was tasting. After 24 hours there was no discernible difference. After one week (4April) there was no discernible difference although both had developed a slight bitter aftertaste. After 4 weeks my notes indicate the Coravin wine was “noticeably better”, but both were still drinkable. After three months (27th June) in my blind tasting , I could not taste the difference between the Coravin stored wine and that with the screw cap. Both had a bitter after taste but were just about drinkable. I was surprised at this as I expected that the screw top bottle at least, or both bottles, would taste like vinegar. I did several blind tests to double check the results. Hence my conclusion is that the Coravin Pivot was a waste of money.

  • @troos1707

    I own Pivot and Model 3 since it released.
    The Pivot is designs to keep wine fresh up to 4 weeks while the normal model is claimed to keep it fresh for months and years. Plus, the Pivot is more efficient in gas use and doesn't need to change needle. So, it depends on how much time u need to finish the bottle less than/more than a month.

    • @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
      @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine  2 роки тому

      I think the price of the gas (less than 0.3 €) is not the most important one when it comes to Coravin making pricing decisions for their capsules. Argon is more dense and therefore might be protecting the wine more efficiently.

    Most of my red wines are aged in my cellar. Often my wife and I will share a bottle over a couple of nights, and so the Coravin Pivot is a potentially useful approach. However, most of my wines have a significant deposit that normally requires the wine to be decanted. How would you apply the Coravin approach in this situation? Simply following the method you illustrate in your video will result in an unpleasant pour.

      @@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Please do. I recently got one and am very impressed with how well engineered it is, the quality of materials, the thoughtful design, and most of all how well it works. No air contacts the wine after it's decanted. It's simple to use and with zero ongoing expense it's very cost effective. I can see how in your situation, tasting a glass from many bottles for review and then saving them on the shelf for later makes the Coravin a very appropriate choice. But for those of us who want to savor a bottle at a time over days or a week or so, and preserve that just opened taste each time, the QikVin is an exceptional product.
