Best and most cost effective preservation system is finishing the bottle…cheers 🍷
Idk about cost effective 😂😂 Go through a lot more bottles that way!
🤣😂
😂
I wouldn't use the word preservation in that case 🤣. But you're right. Coravin is useful from time to time, but if you can just finish the bottle
I bought a Coravin Model Six a couple of months ago. I love how it has revolutionized my wine drinking, but I have already broken a needle so I have to agree with you on that one: it's not as easy to use as it should be.
It takes the right center of gravity and pushing straight down…
I only drink a glass or two, so a Coravin is gold to me! I remember saying something about "leftover wine" to friends who looked at me oddly. Apparently, such a concept was foreign to them! That said, if I finished a bottle every time I wanted a sip, AA would be in my future!
Hahahha they are helpful for avoiding AA
I’ve come down on Repour just a little after realizing I do have to stress when the wine gets down to about half 🤔 That being said, it’s still a great and cheap and easy option for when I go get enough bottles for discount and want to try multiple of them! 🎉
Yeppers!!
Nice presentation again, Doc. Great usable education. (but Not for old wines with a lot of sediment? Right?)
There is a thinner vintage needle for older wines
@@drmatthewhorkey The sediment problem?
Thinner needle keeps sediment out and tilt the bottle slightly not fully when pouring
Nice video again. In the past I was somewhat sceptical about Coravin, that until my wife gave me Coravin as a present. Coravin really works! Pitty the consumables are somewhat price. Therefore, I am eyeballing a third party extension that allows you to use Argon gas stored in a separate small industrial/medical CGA-580 cylinder, that third-party extension is based on an adapter that screws in the Coravin replacing the part holding the capsule, now attaching to an external Argon cylinder via a polyurethane tube. Argon gas is very cheap, Argon finds lot of industrial applications including TIG welding.
I have a model 6-plus in a nice emerald green color and yes, I have also bend a few needles as well. In my case that was total user error. How? Well, that new auto clamping mechanism allows you to make a mistake by doing the clamping and needle insertion in a single push, in particular when the clamp is the top position (that is how I store my Coravin). Doing that, will result in immediate needle destruction. Always clamp first then push the needle. Don't try to skip a step🙂
Wow what a crash course in Coravin hacks!!!
I didn't even know such an adapter existed. I'll be ordering one soon--those cartridges are expensive, and I've been wondering if anyone made an adapter to run Coravins off a tank. Thanks for pointing this out, Hessel!
@@stereodreamer23 I have the same adapter and it is fantastic. I have been using my adapter for 2 years already and I have saved so much money on the overpriced canisters
I have the new Model 11 that doesn't require you to press a trigger. It's super smart, and the just tip and pour feature is great. I do worry, though, that the Eleven when you insert the needle has oxygen in it as you can't "manually clear" the needle pre insertion. I'm not sure, though, if the Eleven automatically shoots a tiny bit of argon out when you pick it up.
Ahhh the baller model! I haven’t used it yet
@Dr. Matthew Horkey Picked it up new on Ebay for a fantastic price. Setting the size of the sip mode and glass mode and speed of pouring is quite cool.
Hi Matthew. Thanks for your videos, really useful ones! May I ask how a bottle should be kept after the first use of Coravin, thinking of larger periods to the next glass (more than a month)? I mean, in the kitchen's fridge or in your cellar? In vertical position (low contact with the gas) or in horizontal position, looking for keeping the contact with the cork but also with a higer exposure to the gas? Are you sure no oxigen is left inside the bottles? Sorry for the many questions, but I see your channel as a reliable source after many years using and recommending Coravin products. Many thanks!
I think vertical is fine for shorter periods... I do lie horizontal for longer periods to help the cork seal but I have not done an experiment to see what is better longer term - vertical or horizontal
@@drmatthewhorkey thanks a lot!
Some Coravin reviewers mentioned they noticed oxidation after a few months.
Do you really believe Coravin can preserve wines a few months up to a few years without affecting the wine quality?
What happens with Diam corks? Does Coravin work with it as with natural cork?
It works with Diam and Natural corks. I found their older needles are very reliable. Once in a while with the new faster flow needles there are off bottles. I have videos on the channel where I did taste wines that were stored for a while and I was impressed. Techinque and storage conditions of the wines are critical
I have the older version. I think it's the Model 2? I don't know. I bought the original version and after several years I had some issues with the gas leaking. I emailed them several times and expressed frustration on my videos. After trying a few things they ended up sending me a brand new one of the same kind I had. I always have it front and center for my reviews, unless I'm doing sparkling. I tried to get a freebie of that, but they never replied.
I did a video on the Coravin Sparkler and IMO it is the best and sturdiest unit they have made. The only problem is that I don’t know how many people will want it as sparkling bottles are often finished off after opening
Got rid of my Coravin and switched to Repour. I thought you did the same.
I use both!! Coravin is a bit easier to go through many tasting samples. For wines I drink over a week, Repour is great
rechargeable capsules or I am not interested 😅
😂🤣
Both very cheaply made. The only well made coravin was the model 1000 or also called model 8 which was the first one ever made. I have also stopped using the coravin canisters as they are crazy expensive. I use an adaptor which allows me to refill the coravin without the use of canisters.
Good call on the adapter. I actually think the Model II elite is well made
@@drmatthewhorkey Two model elite had to be replaced due to the mechanism trigger suddenly broke only 2 weeks after of opening the box and the paint peels off too. If you have the opportunity of comparing the first model ever made (eight or 1000) to all subsequent models then you will understand what I am talking about.
Yay more Israeli wines please ^_^
I’m trying to work on it!
