Sony executives are going to be so utterly confused when Astro Bot sells like 20x more than Concord. I’m pretty sure they’re so disconnected from reality that it will actually just melt their brains
It'll probably do even better than that. Astro-bot had a free tech demo game on the PS5 that was better than a lot of games released today. So it got it's foot in the door already. And the fact it's family friendly, and the character itself is absolutely adorable. My 10 year old wants it, and I seriously want it too.
@@sallehodell this videos total view count is greater than concords max concurrent, not its total unique ever players, so not quite apples to apples but still very funny
Relative to its budget, it seems possible this is the biggest flop ever. Honestly there is a chance this will never be topped. They may have actually made more money if they lit $100,000,000 on fire and charged people $40 for a ticket to watch it burn.
To put this into perspective, Redfall had around 10x the players during it's launch. That's considered a colossal flop so Concord really REALLY did terrible.
As another UA-camr pointed out, every time he tweets anything about Concord, he gets one of the same three reactions from most people: 1) "Wtf is Concord?" 2) "Concord came out?" 3) "Wait, Concord ISN'T free-to-play?" The game is just... nothing. It might as well not exist for all the presence it has.
Thing is, there's a limited audience for those games (And an even smaller one that actually spends money on them) and that audience is already captured. If you wanna have a chance of pulling those people away, you've gotta actually offer something NEW, not a lame-ass copy of the thing they've already got. I feel like people with degrees in marketing and business oughtta be able to figure this stuff out, but maybe i'm naive about the degree to which management types actually know what they're doing.
That's the funniest thing, Concord has no micro transactions, only the 40$ price tag. That's the saddest thing about it imo. Now the companies really think that you will NEED mtx for a game to be popular and successfull.
i'm guessing they first thought "let's make an overwatch" then literally every other hero shooter came out and they have to pick and choose of what they want to copy, marvel movies was blowing up so "let's copy that", PS5 came out so "let's make this a next gen game" basically, it's 8 years of a game made as a reaction without direction
If they spent 8 years to give us this, that says to me that it started out as something completely different and got turned into this garbage via death from a thousand committees. There was no vision, just trend chasing until every bad cliche of modern gaming ended up in one giant turd.
It's like how Skull and Bones took 11 years with an anticipated fanbase and has pretty much already been forgotten about. Most of that time was spent developing a game that would end up ultimately scrapped over and over again until the end result is a product of far less dev hours, despite so much work wasted from going into the overall process
Disagree. This game is what they intended. This is chasing trends. What happened is bungie. Sony doesnt know how to make live services. They probably waited to buy bungie to finish it, using their expertise. Bungie knew it wouldnt work and all of them together have been trying to avoid this disaster for yeard, delaying it as much as they could, making the fall worse.
@@Alfonso88279 Seeing what's going on with Bugnie tells me Sony doesn't even know how a successful live service looks like so they probably adquired bungie based on how pretty destiny is.

Wait is it free? Cause to me after Overwatch 2 failed and died, Marvel Rivals made me drop the modern gaming entirely since its trailer was not good. Cause Ive seen it before, Redfall, Battleborn, Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, Fortnite, now this game. Im kinda done with this Triple AAA bs and Im gonna stay with the Indie gaming since the Indiependent games have proven we dont need this bad trend of more Overwatch 2's, remakes that arent good (Dead Rising 1 is getting worst and so is Silent Hill 2 Remake because Bloober Team is bad) and in hindsight alot of platforming games are coming back properly like Shovel Knight and such. Its time to stop chasing trends these days and go back to basics.
I just look at the cinematic, and just keep thinking if there's anyway at all they could make this more generic. Also, bless you Arlo, as I could tell the green dude was just gonna piss me off with his dialogue, and you muted the video and did not subject us to him.
I go back and watch the Overwatch reveal trailer and start tearing up when Tracer tells the jaded older brother "The world could always use more heros". You're so invested from the first 10 seconds of the trailer even when it's the drawn voiceover holovid. This trailer has a dude falling off a cliff and my first thought is "this that James Gunn? Is this Guardians of the Galaxy?" Then the rest of the trailer plays and I leave thinking "so they didn't want to pay for the GotG licensing fees."

And I’m sure work on Splatoon 4 on the Switch 2 will go in to full swing once the winner is crowned (these finales always help the devs pick a plot or theme for the next game). Splatoon has way more character than Concord, that’s for sure.
Grand finale huh? The first final splatfest which Marie won had Calie mind controlled by DJ Octavio in Splatoon 2. Then, Pearl won as Team Chaos and she is the side protagonist in Side Order in Splatoon 3. Does anyone even know where I'm going? Cause whenever a final splatfest team wins, there's gonna be some lore implications in the next Splatoon game. It's as if we are the ones writing the next chapter by which ever final fest winner is.
Something to remember, if Steam was not a private company the concurrent player count wouldn't exist because companies don't want failure to be visible same reason dislikes are gone from UA-cam and the same reason Sony will never tell us just how bad it is. I’m so burnt out on online multiplayer. I haven’t played any of it since 2015. They need to focus more on single player or local couch co-op. That’s why I stick with Nintendo nowadays.
The intrinsic problem with live service games is that the market is waaaaaay too oversaturated and all of those games demand 100% of your free time. And after all that time investment they can be shut down at any time leaving the player with nothing fondly to look back on. I can't even grasp why people waste money on this kind of stuff. These types of games may make companies a good amount of money if they're successful but they're not consumer friendly, pretty predatory actually.
I'm with you man. With the major exception of Minecraft (which I actually host a server for), I very rarely play online anymore. I'll play some Mario Kart or even the odd Fortnite custom gamemode but that's pretty much it.
Yeah, online games just want way too much of your time, I could play MULTIPLE amazing single-player games in the time it'd take me to grind out the same thing over and over again in some live service trash.
I recently quit Fortnite for good which was the only PvP game I was still playing by deactivating my Epic account. Now just need to wait like 11 more days before it's permanently deleted. Not playing online only PvP games is blissful. The only online games I'll play now are ones that are exclusively PvE.
I don’t even think it being free to play would’ve saved it. You can’t force customers to want something, and it’s clear that Concord is simply a product that people don’t want. Even from a first glance the character designs here are like, so safe and Nothing. They couldn’t even bother to give the lizard man alien guy a snout or tail like a dragonborn or something
Part of me still feels sorry for the artists and devs behind the game, that were essentially forced by the executives to make this sclock. I hope they arent next on the chopping block because this game fails 🙁

@Vezii-DJake I mean if they want to keep their jobs they pretty much have no choice. How it most likely came down was an exec came in gave them the scenario and told the devs and artists to make it work despite it being generic as he'll. Supposedly it had like $30M in marketing costs? Not sure where all that money went, almost feels like this game was just used to launder money to their friends.
If you go to PlayStation's UA-cam channel tons of their recent videos are trailers gassing up this game. It's literally their BANNER currently. They genuinely thought they had a hit on their hands. 😂
When it dropped it hit 697 players at once as a peak. For reference Plants vs zombies Garden Warfare 2 from 2016 went on sale and hit 10,000 the same week. That game is 8 years old and not even the most recent pvz shooter. Jeez man, that's bad.
Ok well you're right that it isn't the most recent pvz shooter, however comma, battle for neighborville was also so bad it pretty much killed the franchise as a whole and even the switch version is a pretty neutered version with the only upside being its not predatory (and gw2 is also heralded as the best of the 3 by most people). Rn gw2 is literally pvz's last hope since the massive sale success caught some people at EA's eyes. So truth be told if any PVZ game is gonna be killing it rn, its either gw2 or pvz2 on mobile. And we dont talk about pvz3... That game doesnt exist, the franchise ended at 2.
The fact that they've been working on this for longer than Tears of The Kingdom is actually mindblowing especially when you look at the gameplay footage and it is just the most generic hero shooter gameplay you've ever seen...HOW could this possibly have been in development for so long!?
In these types of situations there's nothing I would like to see more first hand than the genuine reactions and comments from the producers or people who worked on these games, I'd find it super interesting.
Oh boy, are you in for a treat. A tweet from someone who worked on the game went viral for claiming something along the lines of “gamers hating on Concord are talentless freaks”
@heroponriki8240 I mean, some of them probably are! Even Arlo isn't really hating on the game itself. Sure, he dislikes how generic it has been made, but Arlo agrees that it is principally competently made. I'd rather steelman that single angry dev on X, and believe he means the people who get *angry* at Concord's sheer existance. I've seen a lot of people act almost as if the blandness and the in their opinion bad character designs are some sort of moral failing. The dev probably saw too many online basement dwellers hate on the game on a personal level, and got upset about that. Of course, it's just not wise to start attacking the haters.
The big "oof" observation I saw in the various discords was someone pointing out that Concord's highest concurrent player count in its opening weekend was about half that of Diddy Kong Racing in the same period.
The next batch of PS5s that ship and arrive by January of next year will have Concord preinstalled and undeleteable with notifications popping up every 45 minutes or so reminding the user that they can play Concord if they're doing anything but playing Concord on their PS5.
With a game like this, I get the strong impression that it's a game meant to attract shareholders more than it is to attract players. Basic idea is to have a big Hero Shooter so you can say "Hey, we're a company with a Hero Shooter!" and then investors show up. It doesn't matter *too* much if the game isn't itself selling great because it's secondary to how much it gets investors interested. This strategy is actually pretty common in the industry these days, but you can...overshoot it. And this would be an example where it's very likely to backfire.
This is my first time seeing ANYTHING to do with this game, and the big question: Why are they all basically human? Human shaped noses, human shaped ears. Give the scaly green dude a snake nose. Give the big dude more than two eyes. It's not a movie building off practical actors, it's a video game. Go nuts. Bare-minimum seems to be the vibe just from the trailer alone.
Sony was able to charge $40 for Helldivers 2, but that's a very different game, with a different circumstance. I wonder if they thought they could strike that success again.
You think a company based their marketing and pricing strategy for a AAA game off a sideline project that launched with barely any fanfare and was a surprise hit?
Helldivers wasn't made primarily by Sony, it was made by people who just wanted to make something fun and Sony almost completely ruined it for money, and it is still unplayable in most countries
Man some of the character designs are really good but most of them are so BAD. Especially the hot sauce guy like why did you give him a human face!!! Why doesn't he look like a cool alien!!! Fuck!!!
Defeats the purpose of making the character an Alien in the first place, right? (Though is he WASN'T an alien, he would literally just be Star Lord, so... I'm guessing that's why.)
Probably because it's supposed to replicate that GotG/Star Trek style "alien". I really don't mind it. I don't see why an alien having a human face is now suddenly an issue, when characters like Spock, Worf or even Yondu have been praised in pop culture for years now.
@@jankbunky4279 Spock looked mostly human, Worf's makeup naturally extended into his facial features (eyebrows, nose, facial hair), and Yondu's skin and appearence are consistent throughout. The Concord cover guy's face feels glued on, not like it's a natural part of his head. Honestly my theory is that whoever did the art for these drew the designs out first in a more distinct artstyle, then they didn't translate well into 3D. I can see a world where the wonky proportions fit a lot better.
@GreenShark4 hot sauce guy is also mostly human though, really? He's just green and has some spikes and what not on his arms. It's not like they stuck a human face on a lizard head. His whole head is just a green human head with weird hair
If there's one thing I've learned, it's this. NO ONE, anywhere, is SO much more talented and smart and intelligent than everyone else that they are worth a million dollars. No one is. Anyone who says "these people get the big bucks because they're smart"? That's the big lie. No one is. Heck, even the actual talented smart people who do science and real invention aren't getting paid like that. Someone else who's main skill is pretending "marketing" is anything other than blind guesswork, or lying to the world and claiming that CEOs and tall corporate hierarchies are "necessary", they're the ones getting paid a lot. They're liars, every last one.
For context, even a Nobel Prize, kind of the greatest award you can receive for being an upstanding person, will get you less than a million dollars (that people generally invest back into their work anyways).
Things Sony could have done instead of making Concord: -port Bloodborne to PC with a 60+fps patch -revive Sony Japan, the studio that made the small, niche, experimental titles modern PlayStation sorely lacks -give all of their development staff a raise -give a lot of money to charity -literally anything else
The girlboss doesn't have that awful side undercut hairstyle that screams "I'm an insufferable bit- I mean, strong independent woman" like every other media has. But arlo already pointed that out on his main channel video so maybe he just didn't wanna double dip on the joke.
That's not even accurate. Bubsy tried to be innovative with Bubsy 3D being one of the first 3D platformers out there. It stunk, but at least they tried to innovate. Concord can't even claim that. It's just an Overwatch clone coming in several years too late for anyone to still want Overwatch clones.

You wanna know a crazy thing though? PvZGW2 recently hit 1000 current players on the steam charts. A game from 2016 that hit steam about almost a year ago, has more current players than the game made by Sony. I’m a PvZ guy, but even then that’s absolutely crazy. Especially since the game hasn’t received a (traditional) update in YEARS…
There is nothing quite like pvzgw2 to truly replace it it's like tf2 in that regard so players end up sticking with it since nothing else can really offer that type of experience.
Sony executives quaking in their boots "but we listened to the charts we did what the charts said The algorithm said it was okay WE ARENT SUPPOSED TO THINK!!!"

At 8:16 the point you make about people saying "They get paid a ton, they must know what they're doing. " Is absolutely spot on. I've heard this argument before too and Concord is clear and unequivocal proof that that argument is false.
Dustborn got like no hype from its publisher before release, so is it any surprise no one knew about that game until people started mocking it for how much it fails at trying to pander to gen z young adults? Concord meanwhile was backed by a major 1st party, took up 15 minutes of a State of Play, had two beta tests, and still flopped because most everyone was like “I’d rather just stick to Overwatch or play Marvel Rivals or Deadlock instead.”
Dustborn creators actively hate the vast majority of video game consumers (white males) to the point that they wrote a song into the game celebrating the idea of white people being "replaced" to put it in PG terms and they and the 3 people who actually like the game have the audacity to get mad when it failed.
Given it’s nothing but vile left wing politics being shoved into the shape of a video game, it’s not really surprising it’s a failure. The real travesty is that it was paid for at least in part with tax payer money. It’s sick.
My heart sank after you said they spent 8 YEARS on this game. Sony executives are going to be so utterly confused when Astro Bot sells like 20x more than Concord. I’m pretty sure they’re so disconnected from reality that it will actually just melt their brains
Honestly, even selling 20x more would probably STILL be a fairly big flop.
I hope that dosent make them cancel their own mascot
They will make spider man 16 hopefully and then make 3-15 later
It'll probably do even better than that. Astro-bot had a free tech demo game on the PS5 that was better than a lot of games released today. So it got it's foot in the door already. Unfortunately, as long as out of touch executives keep dreaming about games with infinite monetisation, we'll keep getting games like this.

I think the reason for this game's failure is obvious. The woman character doesn't have an undercut hairstyle.

One nice thing I will say about Concord is that the OST is fire thanks to it being composed by the Spiderverse composer, Daniel Pemberton.
I hope he got paid well for it
Damn shame no one will ever hear it.
Imagine making music for one of the most beloved animated movies ever, then following that up with something like this.

The big "oof" observation I saw in the various discords was someone pointing out that Concord's highest concurrent player count in its opening weekend was about half that of Diddy Kong Racing in the same period.
Based on these numbers, more people have played games I've made than people who've played Concord.
7:43 ARLO wtf dude! Why didn't you warn me! I spat all over my keyboard!
You too?
The next batch of PS5s that ship and arrive by January of next year will have Concord preinstalled and undeleteable with notifications popping up every 45 minutes or so reminding the user that they can play Concord if they're doing anything but playing Concord on their PS5.
Dear god don't go giving them ideas now!
Even worse, they’ll remotely install Concord onto PS5s that people _already own._
Thank god I got mine last year
it didnt even make it to next year theyre already shutting it down lmaoo
5:55 Star child is the best they could come up with?
With a game like this, I get the strong impression that it's a game meant to attract shareholders more than it is to attract players. Basic idea is to have a big Hero Shooter so you can say "Hey, we're a company with a Hero Shooter!" and then investors show up. It doesn't matter *too* much if the game isn't itself selling great because it's secondary to how much it gets investors interested.
This strategy is actually pretty common in the industry these days, but you can...overshoot it. And this would be an example where it's very likely to backfire.
Amazing that you thought it was going f2p when it just... Died. Not with a scream, but with a Twitter post.
This is my first time seeing ANYTHING to do with this game, and the big question:
Why are they all basically human? Human shaped noses, human shaped ears. Give the scaly green dude a snake nose. Give the big dude more than two eyes. It's not a movie building off practical actors, it's a video game. Go nuts. Bare-minimum seems to be the vibe just from the trailer alone.
"Oh man, I've been in a coma the last 2 months but I'm so excited to finally play concord!"
Ahahaha. This reminds me of a Scott the Woz bit. Made me actually lol
I need that yellow robot in any other game
That's very true, it may be the one singular good thing to come from this game's existence
There was once a video game about a yellow robot assassin.

And now, only two weeks after launch, concord is shutting down.
No this is not a joke
The developers spent 208 times longer developing this game than it was ever playable for.
I hope we one day get a cool behind the scenes doc about this games horrendous failure
I just checked Steam. As of RIGHT NOW, Concord only has:
73 people playing…
Good Lord.
The only chance is to go f2p as quickly as possible.
I think their biggest mistake was making the main guy look like lizard Shaggy instead of like a hot scaly
The dude looks and sounds insufferable like why would anyone ever play him
It is good for the gamers and the industry as a whole that such games designed by committee with no cohesive creative vision behind them fail.
Unrelentingly based and blessed! Kind of you to spread the word, stranger.
Yes. Jewish gifting at its finest.
For context, even a Nobel Prize, kind of the greatest award you can receive for being an upstanding person, will get you less than a million dollars (that people generally invest back into their work anyways).
There's teraflop...
... and then there's megaflop.
Ultraflop
Petaflop
a tera is bigger than a mega
@@MexicanDragon2000 I have it on good authority that _Concord_ goes beyond that. This is an exaflop.
Even worse…this is a bellyflop… with sunburn
And… it’s already gone. Not even giving it an F2P chance. The absolute biggest “dead on arrival” game has finally made itself clear!
Welp. They're nuking it. Going offline on Sep 6 with full refunds for everyone.
Honestly, I already knew the Steam numbers, and Arlo warning us to not have any liquids in our mouths made me choke anyway. 😂
It really looks like a game in the background of a movie.
I wanted this game to fail, and expected it to as well, but even I am gobsmaked
The title is now such an understatement lmao
Butternut Squash? Yes Please!
Live Service slop? No thanks!
I hope Arlo sees these every now and then and just has a little chuckle to himself because of how long it’s stuck around.
So true bestie
@@sablen1319 I do my best to comment it on every video ^.^ I'm just waiting for the day when Arlo says it again.
i think of this every time i see butternut squash (which is more often than you might think)
Things Sony could have done instead of making Concord:
-port Bloodborne to PC with a 60+fps patch
-revive Sony Japan, the studio that made the small, niche, experimental titles modern PlayStation sorely lacks
-give all of their development staff a raise
-give a lot of money to charity
-literally anything else
That yellow robot is probably the best thing about this game. I hope Sony will bring the character back somehow but I am not holding my breath.
Cannot believe Arlo is saying there's nothing original in this game. Didnt he see that one character had a different hairstyle than normal??
The girlboss doesn't have that awful side undercut hairstyle that screams "I'm an insufferable bit- I mean, strong independent woman" like every other media has. But arlo already pointed that out on his main channel video so maybe he just didn't wanna double dip on the joke.
Comcord is to Hero Shooters like Bubsy was to Mascot Platformers.
@@mjc0961 Im talking about the 2D games. The suck ass 3D game is just the sprinkles. An dill give Bubsy one thing, it got sequels.
Even bubsy is better than this
Bubsy at least _tried_ to be decent.
@mjc0961 And the developers that game made Syphon Filter a few years later. Honestly, I want a movie on the development of those two games back to back.
Sony executives quaking in their boots "but we listened to the charts we did what the charts said
The algorithm said it was okay WE ARENT SUPPOSED TO THINK!!!"
more people will see this video that people who played it...
Not just a flopp. A great floppening is happening. Perhaps even a floppageddon
Sony, take the hit. Make it free. Anyone who paid anything gets double back in credits for future purchases. If a game launches in the woods and nobody is there to play it…
Dont't give them the money back, dumb customers only learn it that way. They supported a terrible game so they have to endure the consequences.
@@malo6748 Oh, I don't want to punish anyone. Thinking you might enjoy a game isn't a crime. Lord knows I've spent money on games that were fantastically disappointing.
This game was in the works for more years than hundreds of players at peak
I just got this video in my recommended right after Sony took the game off their store and announced it would be offline. I was like "Wow, Arlo's pretty fast" and then I saw it was from 5 days ago.
Arlo we need you to post about this again.
I didn’t even know this existed.
The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s apathy.
Congratulations Arlo, this video has more people than the same and unique Concord itself.
At 8:16 the point you make about people saying "They get paid a ton, they must know what they're doing. " Is absolutely spot on. I've heard this argument before too and Concord is clear and unequivocal proof that that argument is false.
There's also that Dustborn game which has less than 80 players.
Dustborn was far less expensive which makes it a massive flop but not as big of a flop as concord
Dustborn is tax funded and has a much smaller budget so there could be 1 single person playing that game and it would still do well.
Given it’s nothing but vile left wing politics being shoved into the shape of a video game, it’s not really surprising it’s a failure.
The real travesty is that it was paid for at least in part with tax payer money. It’s sick.
My heart sank after you said they spent 8 YEARS on this game. I thought this was just something they just pumped out like every “looter shooter with quirky characters holding guns” that we see.
8 YEARS?!!? Man I can’t imagine what it’s like being one of the individuals people actually working on this.
10:15 interesting take. I wonder if Helldivers 2’s success at $40 had any sway in their choice.
I think they could have gone with the Guardians of the galaxy 'inspired' route with interesting gameplay, or the Overwatch clone with it's own personality route. But not Guardians of the Galaxy 'inspired' Overwatch clone. People want an Overwatch competitor. And people like Guardians of the Galaxy. But combined Concord has no identity of its own.
it flopped!?! who saw that coming, its not like no one was excited for this
