@@balinthajdu6017This is also wrong because there are so many games that are so-called woke like the current Call of Duty games, Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year door and the resident Evil 4 remake that are making money hand over fist. It always seems like every time a game quote is woke but is hugely profitable all the Chuds look at their feet but as soon as one of them fucks up due to obvious gameplay and graphical design reasons, everyone then dog piles and say that oh this is why it happens or this is a symptom of it when there's no correlation. Bad games are bad because they're bad end of story.
@@balinthajdu6017Ah yes, market pandering. Surely wokeness killed the game and not just oh I don't know, incompetent management and game devs who simply focused on the wrong aspects. Everything simply becomes "the woke culture" and never about the fact that the people who made this had no idea what they were doing
@@jordanwhite352 Who calls Call of Duty, Paper Mario and RE4 woke? Modern CoD might be a huge step down from older installments like Black Ops 2 and the new campaigns might be stupid, but it's pretty far from the "hurr-durr, ebil white men are ebil" kind of woke that Dustborn or the Saint's Row reboot was. The closest thing to "woke" was when they named a fictional Russian atrocity after a real American one. Never played Paper Mario and Resident Evil, and I honestly don't care about either of those - not because they're "woke", but because they are not my cup of tea. "There's no correlation", really? Then how come we suddenly see vitiligo in every single game all at once, despite that skin condition being as old as humanity itself? Why did no one decide to add it into video games beforehand, despite it requiring nothing more than some texture-work? Why did Bethesda suddenly decide to add pronouns to Starfield, but left it out of Fallout 76 and Fallout 4 beforehand? There is very much a concerted effort from investors like Blackrock to push these things into AAA games. No one cared that Disco Elysium had blatant Communist undertones -because it was a good game and as stupid as that ideology was, the developers at least believed in it earnestly instead of being paid to believe in it. No one cared that Alien: Isolation had a female protagonist, because it wasn't made to be a point of pride. No one cared that Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity II had gay/bisexual characters because they weren't handled like a stereotype they needed to check off from a list of arbitrary nonsense, they were handled like actual characters. I don't have a problem with "wokeness", I have a problem with tokenism and corruption. I have a problem with large corporations deciding to influence the media by buying up shares and pushing their nonsensical guidelines onto developers. If they would have done that to politicians, it would be called corruption - or lobbying, which has the same damaging effects on society as corruption does. If someone is selling me an idea, they better believe in it themselves. I have no patience for sycophants.
This game wasn't just dead on arrival, it was dead on reveal. Seriously go look at the comments, from the moment people first saw it they told them they didn't want it.
The teaser with nothing but the space ship was pretty warmly received because it looked cool and had personality, a sci fi game that was colorful and had some personality. Only the few people that looked at the description and saw "Arena FPS game" raised skepticism but it was otherwise warm. Then the actual gameplay/characters were revealed and basically all good will was lost because it was OW but far less appealing.

And maybe that’s fine, because there’s no way Sony should be over there thinking that they can charge people $40 for a game that has as much content as a free to play game at launch. If you’re going to cut content and drip feed it to us over time, then price it like the free to play game it clearly is. Otherwise, give us a full game and a full experience.
That's impossible. People took one look at the characters and made their displeasure known _immediately._ If Sony takes this as "people don't like games with micro-transactions," that would mean they were going to exclusively do games with micro-transactions anyway and were just looking for a good way to reveal it. If they look at any UA-cam video, any comment section, any criticism at all, they will know what the problem is.

@@notbot5360 Ah yes, because that has worked so well for the past.. 15 years? 20? Longer? Casual audiences will buy garbage and ignore quality as long as it's marketed enough. Not to mention gambling addictions manufactured by corpos like Valve and Blizzard to extract as much money as possible from people. This is the real behaviour of a consumer. To consume. What you're referring to is activism. Boycotts. Action. That's a lot harder to expect the general populace to do. All that said, what's the problem with 'woke' or being pro-LGBT? The best games I've ever played had leftist messaging baked into them or even presented as a central focal point. Spec Ops: The Line, GTA IV, MGS 4, Max Payne 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Disco Elysium, Cyberpunk 2077... so on and so forth. Anti-war, anti-corporate, pro-LGBT, all the woke things you can imagine. Still fantastic games. The politics of people making games hasn't really changed at all over the years, the corporations employing them just got more corporate. When all the messaging you can include in a product made solely for profit is tokenistic by design, and you can't make something specifically to push that message, then yeah, no wonder it's gonna feel empty or misguided. That's less a fault of the creatives and more a fault of the profit motive, no? It's not like it's 'woke' to be a greedy capitalist. Fact, I'm pretty sure that's actually anti-woke by definition. But you tell me lol
@@mendeleyev1790 yeah I feel like an easy way for these games to stand out in 2024 is to have a single player campaign, nobody seems to be doing it besides cod these days
there is one thing you missed. large characters like Emari cannot pass through certain doors in some stages. they are too big. imagine having your team effectiveness lowered because of a teammate that cant be in a situation to capture objectives and assist, they simply cant be there because they cant go through a door
38:59 "I sincerely doubt that this game will be alive one year from now." Well brother, with the recent news that came out, the game won't be alive even one week from now. So, you are technically correct!
The main reason for me is uninspired characters. Yeah they are diverse but not DIVERSE. Deadlock has a colorful cast of characters + a gargoyle, two robots and a slime, all with distinct and memorable cartoony designs. Here, there's nothing to catch your eye and make you say "I wanna play as that guy". All Concord characters look like cosplaying randos, even those who in concept are supposed to be interesting like the mushroom guy or the aliens all look like people painted green or blue and put in cheapo costumes. All those years of Sony making only realistic cinematic games has seriously hampered their creativity when it comes to character designs, they can only make realistic mocapped humans now.
It's really one of the main issues, the art style. The boring losers that say "blah blah woke designs" are all stupid because Valorant, Overwatch, and Apex Legends all did well with a diverse cast with queer characters in each game as well. They just seem to ignore the successful games that they would say have 'woke' character designs, and pile in on this failure, which even those of us that don't align with them would say is an uninspired game design wise and gameplay wise. Concord really should never have went with this realistic style.
? Deadlock? The only character of that cast that stands out memorable is the one big odd looking priest?? Holding a big ass book. Like for real. Half Life 2 has more memorable and stand out characters then Deadlock. Like for real try and tell me that "Pills Here" from L4D 1 is NOT far more memorable then ANY modern shooter character. Like maybe Overwatch? And that released in 2016! Maybe I'm wrong but Deadlock is not memorable, that is for bloody sure. I'm sure DOTA 2 have more memorable characters being released today then Deadlock. And for Concorde? Like even the names of this games are awful to the core. Not form UK or France whatever. When I hear the name of this game I think of the aircraft that failed to stay relevant. Concord? All except one or two of the characters looks to be actually made by a human. The rest looks like a AI having gone trough a checklist of inclusivity to a fault. It is almost like what actually happened was a strict checklist of what to NOT make was applied. With game balance completely forgone. It is hilarious how Michael Jackson and Haymar seems to be the only decent ones of how many characters? And Haymar I only know the name of because of this video. There is a literal giant trash bin of a robot... The only thing that inspires you and makes this characters rememberable is the awfulness at display. It really is inspiring how any of this could have been made by Sony. If you do not like it don't buy it applies aptly with this game. All the characters could be mute and without any assemblance of being alive or human. In some way it would be more interesting to have cylinders and squares running around on the screen. Programmer art so to say. Or what about Minecraft Steves with customizable textures/skins. Then actual legit expressions of She/They/Him, pronounce could not feel like the only aspect that the devs actually cared to get 'right'. All in glorious 16x16pixle/square art-sytle.
Thats pretty much what people called it woke/diverse trash mean. Its diverse in buzzword terminology only. Its just bland ugly and passionless otherwise.
I feel like you forgot a pretty considerable factor that also hampered players that could come in; the PSN account stuff. Remember how HELLDIVERS 2, a game that was making gangbusters, almost fuckin died from Sony suddenly pulling "You need a PSN account" and excluded 70% of the planet? What hope did Concord, a game that already had struggles with public interest, doing any better? Sony brought this on themselves.
My thoughts exactly. I'm at the point where if I hear "battlepass" - I'm out. I want nothing to do with engaging with FOMO. I want to be able to enjoy games at my own pace - even if that means playing 2 or 3 or 5 or even 6 years after everyone has had their fill. I want to be able to go back to the game years down the road and not look at all the holes in my inventory and feel like I should have spent more money or time even when I didn't feel like doing so - or couldn't afford to do so. I don't have unlimited time OR money so games that are preying on either of those in a "you better do it now or you'll never be able to again!" type way simply do NOT appeal to me in the slightest anymore.
People were generally happy with the monetization of Helldivers 2. Which was a live service. Now Sony found another way to sink that game, but it wasn't with the monetization.
@@Tommy9834Sony’s insistence on gatekeeping is to their detriment. Not financially, but in reputation. Putting helldivers on Xbox would be an ez few million in sales.
See, what sets TF2 apart as a Hero Shooter is that the mercs are crazy, whacky folks within a relatively crazy world. There are no ultimates, and your kit is mostly built from your equipped weapons. The only character with any actual "Ultimate" is Medic with his Übercharge, which deploys a temporary nonholds INVINCIBILITY FIELD on himself and whoever he has his beam on. The only thing that counters it is being blasted off the playable area of the map during it. What balances this? You have to built it up from healing your team- you gain more charge if healing unjured teammates, but that means being in the field of battle. Medic is also balanced out by the fact that he's not designed for direct combat- his syringer can peck down someone but he has small damage, and his melees aren't really meant for being in someone's face (despite having a higher crit rate somehow). The big reward is that brief invulnerability to either push ahead, lock down an area, or save your skin with a tactical retreat. What matters is what medigun he uses- The Vaccinator won't so much offer invincibility as it will a a cyclable defense shield against one of three major danage types (fire, bullets, explosives). This applies to everyone else- the Soldier can be the straight front line bomber with surprising mobility tech and high damage, or he can trade in his shotgun for a banner to buff his allies and a whip to give a short term speed buff. And it does all this with a chest design ethos and idea for each merc- The Fast Guy, The Front Guy, The Fire Guy, The Bomber Guy, The Tank Guy, The Builder Guy, The Healer Guy, The Sniping Guy, and The Assassin Guy. You can pick them out but by silhouette- Scout is smash, hunched, eyes ahead and usually running, and Heavy is tall, straight backed, massive and overall defensively based. And then, and Then! The game focuses on 2 colors: RED and BLU. That's why folks like ZestyJesus are so hard on workshop reviews when it comes to the core body of the mercs, because you need to know who is on what side and which class is which at a glance. And all the colors around those are usually muted, dusty, worn down and maybe a bit dingy because the main setting of most maps is in a desert. Yeah that's changed in recent years, but the overall idea if "mercs fighting in the desert over seemingly useless resource" is thoroughly planted. (Gravel is insanely useful btw the Mann brothers are just idiots) Meanwhile, you look at Concord and there's just. Nothing. I don't FEEL like someone like Roka would be a rocket hopping space merc selling her skills to the highest budder. No she just looks like a grunt with an easily targeted red mark. Colors, shapes, a design ethos all make the Hero Shooter WORK.
The thing that sets TF2 apart is that its characters, despite not being "diverse" in the sense that 7 of them are white men (the other two are a black man and Pyro), they're diverse in that they have individual characterization. Comparing the Soldier to the Heavy, for example, two front-line damage-dealer classes, one is an overly-patriotic military reject who went on a killing spree in Germany for several years after the war ended, and the other is actually quite sensitive and intelligent, if you can get past the fact that he refers to his guns as people. They're (for lack of a better word given Medic's shenanigans) *human*.
The fun part is that TF2 didn't even need to set itself apart, given that they were the only significant player doing the class shooter concept at the time. And yet they did it to a greater extent than all of their copies, even though one would think copies that can't set themselves apart should be somewhat close to the original... What a paradox.
It’s even worse because this team is definitely talented, but a few incompetent people sunk the whole ship. If the director could bring more innovations to the genre and have a lead character design that actually knows how to design a character the game might be great.
i don't. imagine working on polishing this turd for 8 years and not realizing it's just gonna be a shiny turd when you're done. some of them collected a paycheck for almost a decade, and produced nothing of value.
Sorry for the devs who openly insult potential players and even people who just want to change their abysmal character designs? Stop coddling them or expect to be handed more slop like these
Considering that not enough people bought it or cared about it for micro-transactions to even become relevant, I doubt Sony could make that conclusion.
Honestly hate to say it but in the current market it’s the way to go. You get all the benefit or larger player counts while also being able to milk the whales. Part of me wanted a game that let you just unlock everything with an upfront price to succeed, but alas, I just don’t think that’s going to work in today’s market. Granted I don’t think doing this would have made concord a hit, but I think it would have lasted a year or so before being shut down for good.
@@rando27encoI really love and prefer games like that, and I think the rest of the market also wants more games with no micro transactions. The problem is that it was put into an already oversaturated market of "ftp" games. It was doomed to fail.
The upload time is impeccable, it was just announced that Concord is being shut down in 3 days and ALL buyers are being refunded. Never saw something like that before.
Honestly same, gives a bigger perspective to the game, I like how he even took a chance to play the game experiencing the flaws and what it did well, wish more reviews can be like this one
I find praising concord for not having a battlepass to be very naive, like, yeah it doesn't have one, now, but we all know this publisher, if the game had meet any success rather than being sent to the shadow realm, I can guarantee, we would have been slapped with a "We are sorry, we aren't making enough money, here's our battlepass with 11 skins, 5 overpowered variants and a million tiny shits that we premade getting ready to implement this feature in advance, that you can buy for the low low price of 30 bucks, we didn't meant to, we are so so sorry"
To be fair, that’s how it should’ve been to begin with. Forget about it being naive or thinking that the publisher would’ve shoved them in later regardless. The only way for this game to have ever had a chance was for it to be free and be monetized as a free to play game.
Thats still won't guarantee the game to be successful, they need to redo almost everything, knowing deadlock is basically the same as concord but valve, And also the problem most normies have is not about the political stuff, its just the characters in other games are more interesting, if that's truly the case, they need to make new characters, animation, everything related to it. The game is already cost-heavy and with all that redo, might as well make a new game for another 8 years.
By the way, Sony sent the multiplayer project for "TLOU 2" ("Factions") to the trash, on the advice of Bungie and others, but "Concord" was allowed to be released.
Even I was surprised by how quickly they shut the game down. I at least thought they would at least make a few changes to try and find a way that worked and go F2P. I wonder what exactly it was specifically that made Sony go for the nuclear option this early.
The only real excuse is the art assets and cutscenes. I can't imagine the netcode, menus or gameplay (which is just geometry/collision/etc. Copy and paste stuff from the ten million other shooters they already made and already exist.) Even if it's ugly as sin, it's still high fidelity and full of mo-cap. I also wouldn't be surprised if they completely trashed their art assets once or twice... Which would be stupid as heck. It made sense for Duke Nuke'em Forever to constantly drag behind the tech curve, but it was 2016 when they started. 2016 games look good enough. Maybe the realistic art style is what they thought would cause it to sell? .... this is all just speculation. The inevitable post mortem will tell all about the horror and screw ups that happened. On top of everything else, I guarantee you that the office was massively dysfunctional. Getting a team working together requires good competent people, from the head on down. And bad people in high positions, like a producer, have their incompetence trickle down and ruin the output rate of everyone below them.
@@gijane2cantwaittoseeyou203 Bro, good and great games have been made in less time, Elden Ring was made in 4 years, 8 years in development should eitheer pop out an incredible game, or be a sign that the game was in development hell with no clear direction and constant re-dos
that's because valve are game design legends and the art direction + worldbuilding makes it absolutely timeless. it has personality and character without trying to stay "hip"
They look “amazing” in the sense that they are technologically really difficult to make. Realistic skin, hair, and cloth rendering, extremely great looking visual effects, and extremely fine tuned mocap animations. The problem is they look fantastic, but it means nothing when they are designed terribly.
You know what publisher businesses will "learn" from this game flop? That lack of microtransactions was this game main problem preventing it from generating money. So, they will double down on than even more.
You don't think they'll see the criticisms, the fact that almost no one bought the game and those who did largely refunded it, and the overwhelmingly negative response to the character design as the reasons it failed? Even their own purchase metrics should show that no one wanted the game in the first place, and people who gave it a chance returned it.
I mean, either way it's fine, worst case scenario they try to reintroduce the game with a more aggressive monetization, or even better an entirely new game, and still nobody will play it. Either they learn or they sink, their choice.
32:40- Exec: "No, obviously the problem here was that there was not enough microtransactions. If we made $150,000 from every single player, we could have kept this running until the Secret Levels episode aired"
Honestly, good video, but hard disagree on character design being amazing. It sucks. And I am not talking about fan service or anything, I am talking about color choices and roles backed into design. They all feel like a mesh of wrong colors and random elements. There is no feeling of purpose behind them. Some of them look really uninspired, like some NPCs. Example being Roka.
Been watching Concord reviews 'cause it's like watching a train wreck. A majority of the reviews are boring at best, or insane garbage at worst. Stumbled across this video in the recommended feed and sat through the full 46 minutes in its entirety and was thoroughly amused at your exasperated and pissed off persona, but also appreciated how you took the time to get into the substance of the game and pointed out what was actually good about it. You get a sub from me👍
I'll tell you what though, Fleekazoids review of the game ("Overwatch for Chubby Chasers") was the funniest thing I've seen this year. Once you see it, there will be about 30 ear worms stuck in your head "Look at Daw! He's got that Hot Dawg within!"
Your first main compliment, the no battle pass and no in game store and all, credit it where credits due yeah as you say but my first reaction to that, and the tweet you showed, was “oh so they’re doing the bare minimum”. It’s like at that one live event where Marvel’s Avengers was revealed and they touted the same thing and got a huge applause and I was sitting there like, oh we’re cheering for putting out games the way they’re supposed to, this is where we’re at now I guess
Plus, talk is cheap, and that stuff can be added later because they are following the trend of the genre. Remember when Fallout 76 was promised to be cosmetics only in store? And then suddenly there was a subscription price and so much QOL in the store, it's basically a Korean MMO? Yeah, I remember that.
I don’t think it’s even a bare minimum thing. It’s a trend that folks are used to because for the most part, the rest of a game makes up for it. These games sell their payment models, not the other way around, unless the model is so bad that no one can tolerate it. It doesn’t matter what model concord follows cause it just doesn’t have any base appeal… it *didnt* do the bare minimum of being a fun game.
Honestly? Tf2 would have benefited from sticking without the manco store. But they didn't and now the game looks a hot mess from the outside. If anything they were doing themselves a favour
Nobody wants a hero shooter where all the (heroes?) look like background characters in a game in a nickelodeon show from the 2000s, but at least everyone has pronouns. I sincerely hope you didn't expect your modern audience to come through for you.
Sounds like each developer was too afraid to speak up and say what they think the game should be. So now concords a jumbled mess and doesnt know what its suppose to be.
This happens a lot now in AAA studios, people are too afraid of upsetting someone by telling them an idea doesn’t work and so they just try to work around eachother, and the games end up as jumbled messes. This happened with DICE for Battlefield and look how 2042 turned out.
The game might be dead, but thank you for making this. It was clearly done with care and will probably be the best image of what Concord was as a game to be left to posterity
It's baffling to me that literally EVERYONE could see the writing on the wall for Concord. But Sony somehow thought this was worth the $100+ million and greenlit this trash. The braindead suits at Sony thought this was going to pop off. 🤦🏻♂
I love the crew idea. It reminds me of building a sideboard in Magic: the gathering. I start with my main, then have the one who counters my counters, then the one to playbin specific situations. It actually sounds fun. Sad it went down like this.
i've never even heard of it until news that it was dead immediately was spreading, and I had no idea what it even was until seeing this video, two weeks later
From what I saw, a part you seem want this game be OW while the game clearly isn't trying to be anything like it. That's why you don't have ults since they also can be just the "I win button" with minial effort to use, and not having them makes people have more fair fights aside not having roles attach to characters meaning your aren't obliged to bring a tank or a healer in order to play effectively which gives you more freedom to chose which one you want to play, as for coming into the time to kill which is genuinely fine, maybe a bit lower? Maybe, But being fast certainly wouldn't be a great thing for this game, the fact you don't have one shot abilities is a good thing for this game (at least type of one shot like from star child, and not stuff of sniping with one shot when you have full health) . The maps will honestly disagree in the visual aspect, but will agree that structurally they are quite fuck up since you could run around and find no one, feel they are unnecessary too big, even some invisible walls does trouble it. Still finded fair some poitns, could have some forms to recover your abilities passively during the fight, doesn't seem a bad idea, even from the deployables which aren't entirely bad but they sure does incentive you to just turtle in a place which isn't a great thing or even how slow tanks feel. Even for the characters balance I do agree with you but let's also agree that no balance is equal or perfect on any game and we always will have a issue or other there, they did a decent job in general at the point you could play with any character without much issue (at least most of them, kyps is a bit weird). Point out the bonuses system could allow you to being able to pick some if you are performing well for example, "dying and swamping for get a bonus" is not entirely bad the game incentive you to play other characters, but the game also should had other options to at least let you get the bonuses while you still able to play with x character without issue, is fine in rivalry but on other modes it really troublesome and could let you have this option at bare minimum, since people also does have favorite heroes to play, even from the crew builder which if the idea of "pick the characters you want to play" rather than "build a deck" could be more welcoming tbh, easier if variants could just be swapped while in the selection screen rather than place a repeat character and ironically give you less options to chose from, aside from progressive that needs get better indeed. Great video in general man, congrats.
If anything, this game shows how artificial all of the culture war stuff is. There is simply nobody out there who thinks an overweight black woman with purple lipstick and pronouns-in-bio is a selling point. The audience doesn't exist. So it has to rely on its gameplay. And... oh dear.
That was an interesting video, going into the mechanics for once, but realistically the reason that no one played it was simply that everything around it had bad vibes, so they didn't buy it in the first place.
I actually appreciate him bothering to explain the mechanics, even other videos that were more nuanced about Concord didn't bother to elaborate the mechanics and if they synergize

So, if i am getting this right: Every character has essentially a ability reset if they do the kill? No surprise the game is so snowbally. I am a league of legends player, and concord basically gives anyone master yi or Katarina like ability resets. Of course those with the most deadly abilities are going to destroy basically anyone in the game. It also screws over non-offensive characters, because they cannot snowball as hard. They basically cannot stabilize.

Diversity was never the problem. Unappealing character design is. Not being Overwatch is an oversimplification, but not entirely inaccurate. People have invested a lot of time and money into Overwatch, and Concord had to figure out how to convince an OW player to switch, which they failed to do.
When people can rip those cutscenes out anf post it on UA-cam, at that point, yhe game literally invalidated its own existence cuz they forgot the internet exists

Deadlock proves that people will still want good hero shooters. The sole and only reason concord died is because there is no such thing as a modern audience
I think the opening statement of the video can actually be contested pretty easily. Sure, Marvel Rivals has a popular IP backing it, but look at Deadlock. Third person hero shooter MOBA, currently in an invite only alpha release. Number 8 on the charts for Steam, despite that invite only stipulation. It's getting a lot of traction and attention because it's fun and it's free, not even an obligation to put money into it, as there's no microtransactions in the game in its current state. It's not that people don't want to play a hero shooter, people don't wanna play an unpolished hero shooter for more than free-to-play. It's the same reason Gigantic's rerelease is struggling, it was released in an unpolished state, and it wasn't free. Overwatch is free, Deadlock is free, hell even Team Fortress 2 (its class-based gameplay is similar enough in base concept to hero-based to make a comparison work) has had a resurgence and it's free. They all have tons of players and don't have any signs of stopping. Concord's development was started in a market where Overwatch was selling for $40, and continued development through markets where consumers grew tired of predatory microtransactions and battlepasses, but ignored the shift towards popular online titles being predominantly free-to-play, and battlepasses being more popular than they were a few years ago, since some examples of them have gotten more consumer friendly. (note the word "some," because many of them aren't, but the overall perception of battlepasses has grown less disdainful over time.) So I don't think the words "hero shooter" have anything to do with Concord's failure. Not at all, actually. If they weren't forced to do a realistic art style by Sony and actually did a free-to-play model, it could have succeeded, or at least fostered a cult following.
Is this the correct phrase for when things turned out exactly as predicted? Milk goes bad, turns sour : abitrary concept goes bad in the same vain. This video stood the test of time almost immediately though. If anything it’s like honey, it can never go bad because the concept was proven only a few hours later.
Lil bro was underselling what TF2 does when it comes to how much it should be revered. Don't say "even TF2" did a certain thing better bc they did do it better. Their characters are interesting and shouldn't be undersold as something that they shockingly did to little success. The modern shooters that wanna say they have interesting characters all have the same cookie cutter type backstory that "inspires" them to fight. Demomans blood is practically alcohol that made fucking robots of all things, die of alcohol poisoning. u can't say that about any if the other boring hardcore comp games that are on the market rn. these modern titles are trying to be as safe as possible when it comes to the characters and it makes them all bland. It's a shame that concord didn't push hard enough on the goofy looking world bc it really looked like it was gonna go somewhere with some certain guys but eh. The concept of bounty hunters finding odd jobs to get by should be a more fun premise for world building rather than what was released. If they had leaned into that a bit more I think they would've had more of an original IP to work with.
10:28 tf do you mean „And even TF2”? That game’s characters are so dripping with personality that they have become immensely iconic, legendary even Why do you think they are still everywhere on the internet despite the game being older than… Idk, something old Overwatch just has hot women And Apex has… idk, a robot with ziplines and the guy from Moana
14:50 ??? TF2 is the quintessential hero shooter out there that defined the whole genre and it survived and still does to this day without them. I agree ults are a great appeal and they can be fun but they are far from crucial to the genre.
Ubers would be the equivalent. While only available to one class, they're a very powerful ability that charges slowly and can change the pace of the entire game. By everything but name, they're an ult.

Concord’s biggest failure was that it didn’t recognize that a product made to appeal to everyone won’t appeal to anyone. Charging $40 for it wasn’t too bright either.
The main issue is its aesthetics. The heros all look really lame and boring. If they had delovered in that department, then they would have killed it i think.
I'm glad this video primarily focuses on the actual game's shortcomings, and not the culture war squabbling in the background. This game has so many flaws from top to bottom, which would not be corrected by removing the trash can robot's pronouns, or giving the female characters bigger chests, or making the overweight guy skinny. The old addage of "polishing a turd" comes to mind.
The woke crap is what made so many of these bad decisions come to life. Woke is not any ONE THING, it's a PHILOSOPHY, a poisonous philosophy that chokes out anything it gets its slimy, noxious tendrils around. People like you are basically wandering around the periphery like a confused World of Warcraft newbie who refuses to approach the raid boss; meanwhile, we people complaining about wokeness are firing directly at the heart of the problem. "Lol, it wasn't wokeness, it's just every element of the game that wokeness encourages." So close yet so far.
Incredible, this video lays out numerous reasons why this game failed that have nothing to do with progressive ideologies, yet people still want to blame everything on "wokeness". Take a deep breath, find peace, and find better hobbies that don't make you so toxically obsessed with wokevestigation.
@@daims8041 bro no one is complaining about battle passes in 2024, if anything, a battlepass would've helped concord a little, well, at least until they refund
Overwatch still the best hero shooter so far and every "overwatch killer" has yet to kill the game and there have been like 7 of them. Aka the only game that will ever kill overwatch is overwatch. I dont think marvel rivals will kill it and i say this as someone WHO PLAYED RIVALS and has over 3400khrs in overwatch. No game has yet to capture that overwatch like feel and the only one that has come close imo is rivals, and Paladins, but even then its not super close.
The characters don't look "good" the models, animations and textures are all competently made, these assets were clearly made by people with AAA industry skills, but the character designs are garbage and consequently the characters don't look good, they look like well made garbage. I don't care if Daw's character model has 20,000,000 polygons and uses a special algorithm that ensures his hair reflects the light in just the right way, he looks like somebody I'd hire to fix my toilet.
You know what he was talking about. Something can look good and not be aesthetically pleasing at the same time. They aren’t mutually exclusive. Maybe don’t look for opportunities to be pedantic and you could’ve saved yourself from typing up that whole comment.
This is the first Concord review ive seen that 1) Doesn't mention "DEI" or "woke" or "forced" 2) Talks about what specifically makes the characters and setting not work without using a whole bunch of poorly disguised dog whistles. 3) _Actually played the fucking game._

Seriously name me a few and they most likely aren't even woke games. Just what the Left think the Right means as woke. (BOTH of those sides are wrong btw.) And serioisly, if anyone of You will bring up Overwatch as 'woke' again, I'm gonna barf. That game isn't woke. It's progressive, sure. But not woke. You know what's the difference? That people in the centre, like me, can actually still enjoy it. It's not about what 'ideas/values' are in the game, but how they are presented that makes a thing 'woke' (And most often than not broke, or losing in the long run) EDIT: Alright I will play the Devil's advocate to myself. I can think of Baldur's Gate 3. And while I think, yep it is out there with how it presents stuff, I'd still just categorize it with the broad term of progressivism and not wokenest just yet. It's more than digestible and people can have fun with it as it's not the main point or the personality of the game. It's blessfully not putting the main focus on it. It shows stuff as how they just are in the universe. Example that Asemir Lady and the Isobel(?)/Daughter of one of the three big bads. Sure, it's a lesbian couple. But it's a lesbian couple that is: 'we are just so in love'. Rather than 'men are awful, how could anyone be with one, serioisly don't ever be with one!, I can only love a chick like me'. So yeah, it borders on the line (for the conservatives' tastes) but is normal enough for people to enjoy it. Verdict: In my personal opinion, it's not woke

Definitely, I was watching a Twitch streamer, everyone in the comments knew it was dead before arrival.
Was this the one where the live audience groaned when the genre was revealed, or am I thinking of a different game?
The teaser with nothing but the space ship was pretty warmly received because it looked cool and had personality, a sci fi game that was colorful and had some personality.
Only the few people that looked at the description and saw "Arena FPS game" raised skepticism but it was otherwise warm.
Then the actual gameplay/characters were revealed and basically all good will was lost because it was OW but far less appealing.

Worst part is that most likely Sony will take this as "welp see, people don't like games without microtranscations! Too bad, numbers don't lie!"
People took one look at the characters and made their displeasure known _immediately._
If Sony takes this as "people don't like games with micro-transactions," that would mean they were going to exclusively do games with micro-transactions anyway and were just looking for a good way to reveal it.

Well brother, with the recent news that came out, the game won't be alive even one week from now. So, you are technically correct!
the best kind of correct!
I like the slime boy but the game is boring for me anyways@TheDiner50
deadlock's characters are trash too
Thats pretty much what people called it woke/diverse trash mean. Its diverse in buzzword terminology only. Its just bland ugly and passionless otherwise.
Concord walks so other live-service games should not be born.
Sony: "How about 3 more?"
I mean, you'd think people would have realized the problem after Suicide Squad was a dumpster fire, but everyone continued trucking on...
Sad that the one live service game that doesn't have horrendous monetization had to be this one. Nothing will ever change for the better no
My thoughts exactly.
I don't have unlimited time OR money so games that are preying on either of those in a "you better do it now or you'll never be able to again!" type way simply do NOT appeal to me in the slightest anymore.
the fact that this game has no battlepass was the only reason I was interested in it, so I also was sad that it did so poorly and looked so unfun
People were generally happy with the monetization of Helldivers 2. Which was a live service. Now Sony found another way to sink that game, but it wasn't with the monetization.
Despair is your enemy. Take a breath, play something fun like DRG.

(Gravel is insanely useful btw the Mann brothers are just idiots)
Meanwhile, you look at Concord and there's just.
I just feel so bad for all the devs who were put on this project
It’s even worse because this team is definitely talented, but a few incompetent people sunk the whole ship. If the director could bring more innovations to the genre and have a lead character design that actually knows how to design a character the game might be great.

I find praising concord for not having a battlepass to be very naive, like, yeah it doesn't have one, now, but we all know this publisher, if the game had meet any success rather than being sent to the shadow realm, I can guarantee, we would have been slapped with a "We are sorry, we aren't making enough money, here's our battlepass with 11 skins, 5 overpowered variants and a million tiny shits that we premade getting ready to implement this feature in advance, that you can buy for the low low price of 30 bucks, we didn't meant to, we are so so sorry"
yup
To be fair, that’s how it should’ve been to begin with. Forget about it being naive or thinking that the publisher would’ve shoved them in later regardless. The only way for this game to have ever had a chance was for it to be free and be monetized as a free to play game.
Ugh shut up man

Thats still won't guarantee the game to be successful, they need to redo almost everything, knowing deadlock is basically the same as concord but valve,
And also the problem most normies have is not about the political stuff, its just the characters in other games are more interesting, if that's truly the case, they need to make new characters, animation, everything related to it.
The game is already cost-heavy and with all that redo, might as well make a new game for another 8 years.

You're clearly not a game dev. You just complain about games without knowing the amount of work people put even in the trashiest game.
@@gijane2cantwaittoseeyou203bro super Mario Odyssey had less dev time than this ,they where just sitting around
The only real excuse is the art assets and cutscenes. I can't imagine the netcode, menus or gameplay (which is just geometry/collision/etc. Copy and paste stuff from the ten million other shooters they already made and already exist.)
Even if it's ugly as sin, it's still high fidelity and full of mo-cap.
I would guess they redo the art design a lot, like start-from-zero-redo.

@@TruFalco Well in this case they were right!... Most definitely because they've shutdown now
I don’t think it’s even a bare minimum thing.
Where is the modern audience we keep being told want this?
Nobody wants a hero shooter where all the (heroes?) look like background characters in a game in a nickelodeon show from the 2000s, but at least everyone has pronouns. I sincerely hope you didn't expect your modern audience to come through for you.

Playing Fortnite and COD. Much better games.

It's baffling to me that literally EVERYONE could see the writing on the wall for Concord.
But Sony somehow thought this was worth the $100+ million and greenlit this trash. The braindead suits at Sony thought this was going to pop off. 🤦🏻♂

Sad it went down like this.
Thats what i was thinking too. "Wow! This crew system sounds like a cool idea!..............if this was a different game."
i've never even heard of it until news that it was dead immediately was spreading, and I had no idea what it even was until seeing this video, two weeks later
the UI hurts to look at. literally no good game ever has a health bar at the edge of the screen that goes down INWARDS.
Who’s here after Sony announced it was cancelling Concord?
"people dont wanna play hero shooters" lemme introduce to you to my boy deadlock
Thank you for being objective and not spouting a bunch of culture war nonsense like everyone else did.
If anything, this game shows how artificial all of the culture war stuff is. There is simply nobody out there who thinks an overweight black woman with purple lipstick and pronouns-in-bio is a selling point. The audience doesn't exist.
So it has to rely on its gameplay. And... oh dear.
If anything it showed how artificial all of the culture war stuff is. Absolutely nobody wants characters like this. The audience doesn't exist.
That was an interesting video, going into the mechanics for once, but realistically the reason that no one played it was simply that everything around it had bad vibes, so they didn't buy it in the first place.

Of course those with the most deadly abilities are going to destroy basically anyone in the game. It also screws over non-offensive characters, because they cannot snowball as hard. They basically cannot stabilize.
thank you for an actual review of the game everyone else I have seen is just like ¨character bad cause diversity¨ or ¨game bad cause not overwatch¨
Most of the problems in the game are a result of progressivism, so it's a perfectly valid criticism.
@@Selrisitainot really, most queer people are just regular consumers and would not pay $40 on a title in a sea of free-to-play genre environment. if "progressivism" was a reason why it fail, overwatch wouldn't still be generating massive profits every pride month and apex wouldn't be getting millions of random nonbinary characters with good kits.
Diversity was never the problem. Unappealing character design is. Not being Overwatch is an oversimplification, but not entirely inaccurate. People have invested a lot of time and money into Overwatch, and Concord had to figure out how to convince an OW player to switch, which they failed to do.
Okay just keep thinking like that,

See what I mean, I got all these anti-sjw incels in my comment proving my point here.
I do not think that a game that's main gimmick is not the game but instead cutscenes can ever be a good game.
When people can rip those cutscenes out anf post it on UA-cam, at that point, yhe game literally invalidated its own existence cuz they forgot the internet exists
@@FlampyPants I'd make a joke about RPGs but that's an insult to actually good RPGs
Story-based games that are truly fantastic do exist, but they also have good gameplay as well as fantastic cutscenes. Rdr2 or Ghost of Tsushima comes to mind. But those were actually good games.
Deadlock proves that people will still want good hero shooters. The sole and only reason concord died is because there is no such thing as a modern audience
It really hurts to see something with all this work put into it die so quickly. The poor devs..
(note the word "some," because many of them aren't, but the overall perception of battlepasses has grown less disdainful over time.)
So I don't think the words "hero shooter" have anything to do with Concord's failure. Not at all, actually. If they weren't forced to do a realistic art style by Sony and actually did a free-to-play model, it could have succeeded, or at least fostered a cult following.
