⚒How to Make a Miniature Gothic Four Poster Bed⚒

- Опубліковано 8 лип 2024
- Well, it feels great to be back! I've missed you. 😘
The past 10 days or so have been spent refining the design for the inaugural SVG Bundle offered through the Thicketworks Studio Etsy Shop. It's a LONG story, but the upshot is: a girl's gotta eat, so yep, we're going all COMMERCIAL! 😱 Not really. But sorta.
If you'd like to purchase this bundle, here's the link to the Blog Post where you can find ALL the info:

If you want ALL of the skinny about why this is happening, you can read this post, on Facebook:

Let's just dive right in, shall we?
In this video you'll discover all the steps required to turn the Miniature Gothic Bed SVG Bundle into this gloriously distressed 1:12 Scale Medieval Full Tester Bedstead.
The process is extremely similar to putting together one of those fancy laser cut chipboard kits, but a teensy bit more complex than most of them. Because, well, I couldn't help myself!😅
Of course, in order to build the thing, you'll need to purchase the bundle, cut all of the files, and assemble them according to the instructions here - BUT, I share some interesting techniques in this video that can be applied to any number of projects, even if you HATE Medieval Splendor.
My favorite technique? Creating an absorbent ground on a flimsy chipboard surface, using super cheap and readily available supplies. Yep.
Then, I go all crazy with the Gilding Thingie - (even though I'm the world's SLOPPIEST gilder!)...because: GOLD!
Anyway, I hope that you enjoy the process - it's been a gigantic effort behind the scenes to bring this one into the world, and I am super happy about it!

"It's almost like one of those chipboard kits you can buy". Only almost? You're hilarious, Heather. Beautifully done :)
Ha! Well, I'm AMAZED at how well everything came together, girl - I'm not some industrial designer who understands all about how to think these things through! But, I am super proud of having boot strapped it this far, and I fully intend to get better and better at it. Bless you for being so kind. xoxo
What a pleasure this video was Heather! The bed was absolutely stunning from beginning to end💖💖 I personally know the energy and time it takes to create patterns for 3D objects are yours are of the highest quality! I wish you all the best in your new store!! ~Ara
Dear Ara - I have learned, and will continue to learn SO much from you! Thank you for your generosity, your humor, your love of the aged and decrepit! You ROCK. 💗💗💗
Hi Heather. I hope all is well with you. This miniature bed is a must have for every Gothic lover. Well done. Have a wonderful blessed week-end.
Dear Maria: things are very well, and I hope the same is true for you, my friend. Thank you for liking the bed: it was a labor of love. xoxo
Heather, I watch a LOT of UA-cam and I have never commented on a video, but I have to say, you ROCK!! I am a fan. Your videos are always so professional, informative and entertaining, not to mention totally awesome and inspiring. I smiled during this whole video and I'm so happy for your new Etsy shop!
Whoa! Now, this is something, girl. Thank you for breaking your 'no comment' streak to share this incredible message of encouragement: so deeply appreciated, Lori. Wow! 💖
Beautiful bed Tracey! You are just so talented! I’m in awe of your skill! It’s funny... I’ve watched this after watching a doco on the beds of medieval kings and queens! Thank you for sharing. 🌹Rosie of Oz 🇦🇺
Hi Rosie, darling! I had SO much fun designing this piece - it taught me so much, girl. xoxo
WOW!!! The bed is definitely fit for a queen! It is amazing!!
Shirley! I know I haven't responded properly to your wonderful conjecture about captive maidens, etc - I apologize (overwhelmed with work here) just know - I LOVE your mind! xoxo
@@Thicketworks my dear friend, I know that there are a gazillion fans loving your work and only one of you. I know how hard it is to respond to every comment. It is almost a full time job. I admin'd on a group that I was on once and tried to respond to everyone. It became a little overwhelming. So, please know that I understand. I'm just glad that I get to witness your creative visions come to life! xoxo
I love your creations! Not going to lie... I want to make this for my art dolls. It's gorgeous and incredibly detailed. You are the master!
Go for it! You can do it, and it will be a cozy and safe haven for them, girl. Yep. xoxo

Such a beautiful miniature my dear! Some day I will have a criquit of my own and a proper work space so that I can utilize all of the stellar guidance you provide to make my own fabulous miniature world. The gifts you share are truly fantastic my friend. I can never express it properly ☺💜💜💜
Someday you WILL have a Cricut, @Rubbish To Rubies! AND a proper work space! And oh, boy - just watch out WORLD! 😍
@@Thicketworks thanks love! It's one of my goals and prayers ☺💜
Holy flip that was intricate! So beautiful. Your patience is amazing!
It's so funny, Neta...IRL patience is NOT one of my strong suits, but when it comes to creating, I lose all track of time. Hugs! xoxo
Well Heather its been a while....wow this the best!!!!!! Absolutely perfect! As always...thanks a lot for your time
I apologize for the absence, my friend. There was just NO way I could do this thing justice in a single week. Thank you for the Grace, and for your generous Spirit, Barb! xoxo
This bed is beyond EXTRAORDINARY!!!! Your hard work and lonnnnnng hours have resulted in piece that is beyond compare! I can not wait to see what is next! I stand in amazement and awe my friend xoxoxo
Dear Robbin - thank you for your priceless feedback and encouragement during this exciting design process - it was SO good to know you were there, every step of the way, girl!💖😘🌹
Everything you make is so beautiful and well thought out. I love your work so much xx
Well, maybe not EVERYTHING, darlin'😅 But, seriously: thank you for you generosity, my friend. xoxo
Simply amazing!!!!!!!!
This was such a fascinating project, @karin pellaers...from beginning to end, it taught me SO much. xoxo
Heather, having watched again, I just have to congratulate you on this amazing piece of paper engineering. To design such intricate pieces that fit together so well is spectacular. I believe you really are an exceptional designer. Love jo
Well, this is an extraordinary thing to find here, dear Jo! I've got a lot to learn, but the process of designing 3D pieces from 2D panels fascinates me so! Thank you for being so kind, darling. xoxo
Stunning work yet again, you never cease to amaze!
Having so much fun over here, Margaret! There outta be a LAW! (thank you for being so sweet, girl) xoxo
That is totally amazing!
Hey, Ruby! This was quite the learning experience my friend: I'm thrilled that you like it - thank you! xoxo
Hi, girlfriend, When I did not see a video last week, I had to tell myself, *be still my beating heart. I am having internet issues and I thought I missed it. When I finally figured out why I was so happy. I knew it would show up eventually! Even two weeks it amazing with all that you have going on! Take two weeks or even more. It's worth the wait. However long it takes to get membership up and running is fine with me. I am currently working on how to use the C Maker. You know how techno challenged I am but I will learn it come ( you know what) and high water!! Of course the *bed* is awesome. I like you posted the list for supplies as I like to have what I need on hand when I start a project rather than stop and wait for Amazon or have to run to the store!?!
Dear Lois - I am SO excited that you'll be joining the Membership!!! And THANK you for purchasing the bundle, even though you'll be getting it (and ALL upcoming bundles) as a Member.
Oooooh, we are gonna have us some FUN, woman! One of the best things about it will be that the whole community can work together to support each other as we learn more and more - you won't be alone with that techno challenge! 🌹💗😘
That is incredible! !!! What a stunning piece!!you definitely have a talent for this!!!
I've certainly got a passion for it, Sarah - and I'm determined to learn all that I can to make the files better and better. Having so much fun, it oughtta be illegal, girl! xoxo
The end result looks like some fine, delicate antique you might see on Antique Road Show. Its truly beautiful Heather, well done. You provide me with such inspiration.
Whoa! That just gave me goosebumps, @ButterBurd - I'm humbled and very touched that you would say such a thing. Thank you. 😘
Simplemente...MARAVILLOSO!!!!!Tus proyectos son tan exquisitos, delicados
Es una verdadera obra de arte
Gracias!!!!!💖💖💖💖
¡Oh, gracias Monica! ¡Me lo estoy pasando tan bien trabajando en este diorama! xoxo

Looks amazing!
Thank you, my friend. Labor of love! xoxo
@@Thicketworks I particularly love the canopy, so true to period to have the panel instead of fabric draped across.
What a dreamlike bed. Your ideas and projects make me speechless again and again. ❤👍 Hugs vom Tinchen
The further down this path I wander, the more RIGHT it feels, Dear Tinchen. Hugs! xoxo

OMG. You set the bar really high Heather. This is just magnificent. I can't wait to try those wonderful files on my Maker. Congratulation, and thank you for offering those amazing files on Etsy. xoxo
Dear Chantal - you make my heart swell with HAPPINESS, darling. Thank you. 💗
Oh Heather! You have totally outdone yourself with this piece! It's absolutely STUNNING!!
Dear Penny - oooffff! What a ride this has been. I'm learning so much along the way, and I have high hopes for the kinds of projects that we'll be able to crank out! Thank you for being here, with me, my friend. xoxo
@@Thicketworks girl, you've taught me way too much for me to ever think of leaving you now. I'm with you ALL THE WAY!!
@@pennymerideth3650 Woo Hoo! xoxo
OMG Heather, this is more than amazing. I have 2 cricuts and a gypsy. Unfortunately provocraft discontinued the use of cricut craftroom, which was the way I used my computer to drive non cricut svg files. The new "space" does not support the old machines, and no doubt there are thousands of us who were left high and dry when the new cricut products were introduced. When I can persuade my husband to buy me a new cutting machine I will indeed very happily purchase your files. At the moment I cannot even use your free ones. Thank you again for sharing your incredible talent with us. Love jo x
I'm in the same situation too. But I too appreciate her absolutely gorgeous ideas!
Oh, Jo. That is SO frustrating to hear! In spite of the fact that I ADORE the Maker, I have some real issue with ProvoCraft. Time after time they have made what feel like callous and somewhat cowardly decisions that have impacted untold numbers of customers negatively. It really bothers me. That's why I have no interest in being associated with them in any official capacity. Until you are all set to cut electronically again, that's gotta be SO disappointing. Thank you for being here anyway, girl. xoxo
Oh, no! That's just WRONG, my friend. I'm so sorry. xoxo
This is the most beautiful bed I’ve ever seen . I wish I could make one for myself .
Whoa! That is high praise indeed, my friend: thank you. Drawing on our shared history of Medieval ornament has to be one of the most fascinating explorations I've ever undertaken. I simply cannot get enough! xoxo
Gothic beds have always been so romantic with all the beautiful wood your creative interpretation was beautiful. xoxo
I'm so disappointed that I didn't have time to add on all of the embellishments that are possible with this kit, Cindy - the off-cuts are just a treasure trove of tiny possibilities! Thank you for being here, girl. xoxo
@@Thicketworks Its so nice to know that those lil bits can add more to this or any project I adore this project and Im ready for next Thur xoxo
Wow, so fantastic and so amanzing. I love your work and projects❤️
It's wonderful to hear this, @LoKe- Art - thank you, my friend! Let's keep creating! xoxo
Watching you work it´s like watching magic :) Another stunning piece under your belt :D Gorgeous! 💜💜💜💜💜
That is just about the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me, my friend: Thank you. 😘
Thank you for sharing and inspiring me .
Thank YOU, Elizabeth: it's so important to me to help folks understand that they can do these things too! xoxox
Brilliant!
Well, thank you so much, @CertainlyCaroline - I wouldn't go THAT far, but I'm thrilled that you think so! xoxo
Hello Heather, I just wanted to say that I just love your designs. I bought the svg files of your beautiful gothic bed an I can't wait to begin building it. I just hope I can do it justice. Love, Nancy x
OMG I love it so much! I want a bed like that in real life! You've really outdone yourself this time, and I can see why you would want some compensation for sharing the file. Also, I love that you used that Michelle Ward stamp set - I have that one too. The star was perfect for this project!
It just tickles me pink that we share a passion for Michelle Ward stamps! She is the creme de la creme, in my eyes...when we need a Medieval Star Motif, she is the GO to source. Thank you for your kind words - this project is SO near and dear to my heart, @PocketSize! xoxo
@@Thicketworks SO true about Michelle. She's my hero :) And you're welcome, someday this project will be on my worktable, too!
Heather, it was worth the wait! Brilliant design, beautifully realistic and elegant. I find myself ...unfortunately...in the same situation as some others about having an older cricket, etc. But I fully intend on one day saving enough to update. Best of luck on your pattern venture!! 💖😊
Oh, that just frustrates me no END, darling. You paid for the machine! How can they let their customers down like this? Grrrrr. Thank you for your kindness, in spite of the fact that it must feel like standing in front of a candy store without being able to taste any. Huge hugs. xoxox
@@PossumLady8262 Absolutely. It's crazy.
Exquisite! Good for you, this is what you've been wanting to do for a long time. Im so glad your dream of diorama making, witn all its incredible intricacies, is coming true. You are awesome at it and I cant wait to see how far you'll go. Meanwhile. we reap the benefits of your gorgeous work. BIG HUGS : )
Anastasia...oh, you know my heart on this SO well. There is a FIRE inside when it comes to dioramas. I dream of becoming capable of translating these visions into reality, and I'm trying to learn everything I can. HUGE HUGS! 💗💗💗
I have said before I love your attention to detail ... this is so true in your materials list!! Thanks for making that available. Another great project!! checked out your etsy page... For those of us with out cricuts.. would you be offering precut packages? LOL
Hey! Thank you for visiting Etsy, girl! I have a friend who sometimes will cut the pieces for customers, and send them to you for a reasonable fee. Send me an email here: heather@thicketworks.com - and I'll put you in touch! xoxo
Heather its beautiful! And congratulations on becoming an etsy entrepreneur! I wish you tons of success. A couple of suggestions/hopes:
1. Consider making the file available in other scales. I'm sure all the Barbie girls out there would want to pick this up in 1/6 scale (I follow a few UA-camr who specialize in beds for Baribies, Monster High, and Descendants figures). I personally need a bed like this in half scale, which has been growing in popularity. And if it would work in smaller scales, I'm sure it would be a hit. It's so hard to find stuff that small.
2. Consider being willing to sell pre-cut pieces for those without a die cutter. I imagine there are a number of people out there who don't feel the need to spend $400+ for a Maker yet, but who wouldn't mind spending a little to get some pre-cut pieces so they can follow along.
Good luck with everything!
I love the idea of being able to purchase pre-cut pieces.
Oh, Heather - first of all thank you for the congrats - it's been an incredible experience so far. I have much to learn about every aspect of this venture, and I appreciate the fact that you are willing to share such detailed and helpful feedback - that is amazing of you!
I hear you about the scales - and it is something that I would love to build in to the workflow at some point - it would be incredible to create files that can be used by different segments of the mini community, and I will definitely be working toward that goal!
I also hear you about offering pre-cut kits: I KNOW there is a market for this, but I don't personally have either the time or energy to provide both the digital AND a physical product. I am open to any and all suggestions - but unless someone can set me up with a company that can produce these for me, it's just not humanly possible. One woman show, here, already overextended. 😉💗
I'm exploring options about how this could happen, @AndreaJane...sounds like a cottage industry opportunity to me. Stay tuned - I've got some feelers out! xoxo
@@Thicketworks I know some people contract out some of the work by allowing their helper to keep 100% of the profits from that portion, but sell in your store so you still retain the business/market. You get the right to cut them off at any time and either recontract out, do it yourself, or stop producing altogether. It just depends on what you set up.
That being said, I understand that's a lot all at once, and I totally respect not being able to stretch yourself a thousand directions (or even just not wanting to). I just have a lot of business clients and enjoy helping them generate ideas to be successful.
Artists do need to eat too. I think that becoming a business helps artists create better product and benefits us all. You have given us an amazing amount of incredible quality ideas, techniques, and even free svg files. And we all appreciate it. But I'm also glad you are finding a way to "live" from your work too, so that you'll stick around and keep creating beauty (and videos) for us. I don't mind spending a couple bucks here and there so I can follow along and support you. You rock!
@@heathertaylor-willockx3632 That is so interesting - I've just been talking with some folks about something very similar to the "you keep the profit, I keep the branding" option. Good to know that it works for some, and I'd be willing to try it out.
You obviously have not only business savvy, but the generous nature of a mentor, and I am very grateful for this exchange: may you find yourself equally blessed if ever you are in uncharted waters, like I am! Huge appreciation!
You keep blowing me away. This is so beautiful and I loved it in the garden! A beautiful bed for a medieval fairy queen. How do you design these complex patterns? The superglue turns the cardboard into something with real weight and depth, it must feel solid. I can't wait to see what's next!
Girl, I can't stop dreaming of ALL the things to create! It's a kind of madness. Yep. I work in various graphic programs to get the designs where I want them: Photoshop, Affinity Designer, SCAL Pro 5, sometimes InkScape. Whatever set of tools is needed for a particular aspect of the process. And yeah, the hardening process gives the pieces WEIGHT, in addition to rigidity - and personally, I REALLY like that. Thank you for the connection, my friend. xoxo
@@Thicketworks I really appreciate that you accomplish this all on your own. I wish I could be a little fly on the wall while you work! oh btw, I tried your "rusting" technique with the cinnamon and it looks EXACTLY like rust!
Heather it is stunning. I'm kinda at a loss for words.
Darlin', I am so pleased that you like it. I only wish I'd had time to decorate the HECK outta the exterior with all of the off-cuts - xoxo
You’re amazing 🤯🤯🤯
Hey, Zena! Well, it's super kind of you to say so, girl, but I'm pretty darn ordinary...however I LOVE creativity with all my heart! Thank you for being so sweet. xoxo
Love your videos. Could you please show us how to make new black metal look rusty and older? Thank you so much.
Thank you so much, @Faranak Peart - much appreciated. That's an interesting question: I love rust effects with an unnatural passion...but it all depends on the original surface. When you say black and shiny, do you mean 'fresh' wrought iron, with a coat of shiny enamel paint? Or some other type of finish?...the approach would vary widely, depending on the answer. Thanks! xoxo
GMorning my dear Heather...
Hello, my darling - 😍😘🌹
Omg so elegant. Your attention to detail is amazing ❤️ quick question, I noticed that you didn’t use baking soda with the super glue. Is that because of the new brand of super glue you are using or because this project didn’t require it?
Hi Donna! I love your new profile pic, girl - looking fabulous! I use the baking soda method when it's helpful to strengthen a piece that is super fragile, when gaps need to be filled, or when a surface needs to be 'built up'. Since none of those applied here, it wasn't necessary. Using Starbond isn't a replacement for it. xoxo
Hi Heather! I have a cricut maker what setting do you use to cut out your chipboard pieces? I cannot get them to cut all the way!!!!! I am also using a deep point blade.
Hi Debra! I change settings from time to time, but here are the settings that are currently working exceptionally well for me when cutting 22PT Chipboard:
Strong Grip Mat + Tape
Fine Point Blade
Pressure: 320
Cutting Passes: 4x
Thank you!!!!!!! Worked like a charm!😊
@@debramichaud7737 Yay! So pleased. xoxo

КРАСОТА!!!
О, благодаря ти, приятелю! 💗
I don't have one of those machines but would this technique of layering and adding superglue to harden work on stuff I make for 1:6 projects? I kind of think it might but I am still confused as to what you call chipboard...it kinda looks like heavy card as chipboard here is Medium Density fibreboard and I just know you aren't layering that!
Hey there! And yep, this technique will absolutely work for 1:6 scale. Lightweight chipboard refers to the thin cardboard that is very similar to cereal box weight. Hope this helps! xoxo
Love this bed....but can anyone tell me the finished dimensions for this piece please?
Glad you like it, Marie - thank you. Here are the dimensions: 10.214" tall x 7" long x 5" wide.
@@Thicketworks thank you...I ask because it loads into design space at 12 inches tall...I figured that's not right and there's no square to scale it correctly
Thank you for letting me know, Marie - it looks like CDS has undergone an 'update' that now interprets all of my files incorrectly. I apologize for the inconvenience, and will be happy to work with you and provide all the details needed. Please send me an email - heather@thicketworks.com
Thank you!
