With John's multiple injuries from being a door-kicking-plane-jumping-bike-wrecking madman, the need for proper technique is crucial to longevity, strength, and preventing further injury. Rip's one-liners and sage advice is worth watching through to the end of this one!

“Strong people are harder to kill and generally more useful” one of my favorite quotes ever!
as long as they had some good training first
Its also proven true over again in my experience.
As long as they are mobile
One of the reasons that our military are so respected is that they tend to be very well trained. Strength is part of that. So........ I really liked that remark.
John, if you put that on a t-shirt I'm going to have to buy one or two.
John: *half a step in through the door* "Hey ma....."
Mark: "Everything you've been taught is false"
John: "But I ...."
Mark: *claps away handshake attempt*
"Stop talking. Starting with squats. I know about your back problem. But we'll get to that. Ok let's go."
John: "BUT I ...!"
Mark: "Nope, my show today."
John: "Ok .... :/ .... btw ... :D"
Mark: "No bad jokes. Do squats."
John: "Okay ....!"
^^
😂😂😂😂😂😂
This made me laugh 😂
LKVideos this was too real 😂
LOL
nicely done video though. John takes it in stride and it comes off good natured
“I know who everybody’s wife is”
Ok, I’ll watch this video
who's joe
@@AdrianLinkin joe mama
So mark can help Joe find his future wife.
LOL
John: You made that word up..
Rip: No. I'm just the first person to use it. 😂
lol
Robert KY Wildcats Propriocetors are neurons that detect muscle elongation or contraction, generally speaking.
Ha! Definitely a word, generally referring to the awareness of position or movement of the body.
LOL, and now I'm stealing that line. I make up words all the time.
Haha yep. That’s Rip
TV show idea: Rip running a nursing home for 6 months.
Hahahahaha
Best comment man. I would get fat on the couch eating potato chips and the "tactical" Mt. DEW wearing sweats and a stained ripped white t shirt watching every episode.
Nurse Ratched.....
Weightlifting has bigger benefits for the elderly than anyone else
Read the nametag grandma, you're in my world now.
"It was at this moment that John lost control of this video" LOL
the music made me loose it!
As if we expected anything less from Rip 🤣🤣
Mark had already lost control minutes beforehand! 🤣
“That’s funny, John. It’s extremely funny.”
Guys, I don’t think he was being completely honest.
Rip can be as dry as the Death Valley desert. He got the joke, but he was making an important point. Check Rip's Podcasts, he's hilarious.
@@wreagfe I had no idea just how witty and funny Rip is until I started watching him on UA-cam.
I’m glad you cleared this up. Thank you
A laughed, I learnt, I cried. Awesome episode.
I first found starting strength as an EMT realizing I couldn't lift people as well as I needed to and I was having back pain from it. I realized I needed to do deadlifts to get my back stronger. I realized that I would come into the gym with back pain and leave the gym without any. Over time I was able to get much stronger and I'm much more capable now as a police officer. Strength matters a lot in the real world.
From when I started until now:
Deadlift from 165 to 460(x3), squat from 125 to 405(3x4), overhead press from 65 to 187.5, bench press from 95 to 250 and still having the endurance to best my 500 meter row and other endurance tasks since the academy.
*10/25/20 updated to current strength numbers.
freneticfanatic How long did it take you?
Yeah, how long did it take you?
@@depressedbaboonwithinternet a couple years.
@@freneticfanatic nice man, thank you for your service. Blue lives matter!
@@depressedbaboonwithinternet Thank you!
Rip is a legit legend and the funniest trainer I've ever listened to .

>Leaning on the squat rack

I love Rip. So hardcore. Doesn’t give a shit about your feelings.
😂so true

10:57-11:01 "If you don't want to be in a nursing home, stay strong!" - Mark Rippetoe 😊😅
Its amazing how simple yet profound his wisdom is...."If more people were strong they would be out of the nursing home"....WOW!!!!
it's true. no more sarcopenia ✌️
Hip draaaahiiiiive
L4 L5S1 injury from injury and duty belt. Hit 225 5 times this past week!! Rip’s videos have inspired me. Little by little, getting stronger.
John's a comedian lol..
Ole Grumpy is coming back, I wasn't saying anything. Almost spit out my coffe
Warrior Comedian
I've been following Mark for 20 years; good info!
Mrgunsngear Channel review the blue book.
Are you going to do a mark rip collaboration as well?
Followed him for 20 years and Rip still hasn't gotten a restraining order on you? That's one tough man
Mrgunsngear Channel, it shows, brother.💪🏻
have you been an advocate of killing cops the same amount of time or is that just recently?
2:24 one of the reasons I love Rip so much hahaha. No small talk right to it lifting. What a badass coach
tweaked my back doing squats today, and came home thinking "damn, I might need to re learn squats on youtube". Somehow I only had 4 recommended videos at the top of my page, and the only fitness related one happened to be this. Today's gonna be a good day for me.
This is my favorite collaboration ever
Seriously, I had no clue John had any interest in this part of the fitness world! Seeing this collaboration is like watching my college roommate meet my favorite cousin for the first time, I can't help but hope they get along!
"Do it all and do it right."
"I demand perfection in all things at all times."
"It's easy, just be good at everything."
I've heard him say it too.
Can’t believe I missed this video until now! Love John’s channel and Mark’s books have been saving me from weakness for the last 2 years. Way to go John!
This is peak UA-cam material, thanks John! Keep up the great content!
As a martial artist, his initial squat instruction on form makes total sense. We always drill it into our students that every single technique, everything we do comes from the hips.
Yup. Punching especially comes from the hips.
Thank you for introducing me to this guy! What an impressive command of the subject of weight training. More than the typical 3 sets of 10 reps nonsense, a real look at the kinematics of how to lift properly. Fantastic. I'm reading his book now, and I already see this will be a valuable addition to my training knowledge. I hope to hell you have plenty more from your time with Rip.
Thank you John and Mark for the free lesson.
Always great lessons in your channel!
This man is the definition of no BS
Improving yourself and sharing the wealth. Thanks for who you are, John. Comedian and all.
1:37 - Watch at 0.25x, see Rip's eye contact & posture, watch John back up so much camera man has to pan. It was at that very moment, John lost control of the video ;)
Mark's teaching method is fantastic.
I love starting strength! Never felt better and I'm surprising myself every session with a new PB I wasn't sure I could do especially in the amount of time I'm getting it. RIP is the man!!
Great crossover. Been following Mark Rippetoe way longer than WPS.
Love the whole video, especially the first three seconds - the expressions on Mark's face!
Thank you for this video.
Appreciate all you do.
My life changed today... great tips, wish I had a coach like this in my 20s or 30s
Thank you for this video John. RIP gave you a lot of information that I haven't learned from his other videos. I look forward to more content from you and RIP.
One of those movements that we all think we know how to do but after watching this video I realize I was definitely doing it wrong. Thanks for making this coaching session happen!!!
Thank you for posting !
Recently discovered this Rip dude and I love him! Straightforward, no fuckin around, legit info
This is a true lesson in asserting control, over the video, the training and the mindset.
Great video! John's personality contrasted with Rip's crusty self is hilarious!
Thanks for bringing this information brother
Rip is the man! Great job warrior poet
Also THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this video! 😭 for weeks I’ve been doing squats so wrong and I’ve watched so many videos but this guy solved EVERY issue in minutes
You’re obviously a comedian: cracks no smile😂😂😂
Thank you John. I really learned from this video.
Wow, just realized i have been squatting the right way for 25 years, even though i thought i was wrong being leading with the hips. I thought you had to lead with the chest/shoulders but could never manage to do it. Thanks Rip.
It seems I knew squat about squats.
So did John. Now he does.
As a lifter for 20 years now I follow Rip for ages. The Warrior Poet Society I follow because I love Johns style of teaching as well as his humor. I coach Football (Gridiron, not Soccer) here in Germany and learned a lot about how to transfer knowledge by him. This video really really made my day, thank you so much!
Two great teachers with very different styles, that is awesome
Loved the video. One of your best..
So much awesome from this video. Let the wisdom flow and then harness it into bodily strength!
“It’s not supposed to be comfortable” “It’s NOOOT comfortable” lol
War Poet have you been looking at my subs list? I’ve been following uncle Rip for years! Glad you found him.
i appreciate john not needing to be in control. learning to learn from this man.
Nah he was just the Beta male
His methods really do work! Once it finally clicks its like your eyes have opened for the first time in regards to weight training! Even if you’ve been lifting for years!! Good video!
Brother, I love listening to Rip!! Thank you for posting warrior!
I love Mark's training!!! Great vid!!!
A few years ago I went there to qualify a young lady powerlifter for nationals. Spent good time with Rip talking about the old days of lifting and mutual friends.
I appreciate both of the hosts here, as you can tell they both truly care about helping people get "strong", and the value that strength has for a person's entire life. Definitely changed my perception on why it is important to lift weights.
That was great! Loved it. I have lots of back problems and this will be quite helpful. Thanks!
"Fail forward"! Very cool!
YES!!! Collab of the century!!!
I love Rip. I listen to him while I'm working out. Really helps me blast through a set ♥️
Me too. I gain strength everytime he says "Don't be a pussy" :D
Two of my favorite people in the same video together, outstanding.
Being a retired Army Ranger I've got arthritis in my hips, knees, ankles and lower back. I had doctors tell me to stop lifting weights and especially don't squat. After getting myself into terrible shape I bought Mark's book, Starting Strength, I began following it. Several years later, I'm now 58, I'm still squatting, deadlifting, and the other big lifts, I'm stronger, my legs feel better and I look better on the beach. I now also own the companion book, The Barbell Prescription (Strength Training for Life After 40). Don't listen to your doctor, listen to Mark. Lift heavy, lift often, stay strong, remember, stronger people are harder to kill. RLTW
Gonna save this for when I'm old and my doctor tells me to stop lifting.
Two of my favorite people in one video!! Yes!!
THIS VIDEO WAS SO INFORMATIVE, THANK YOU!! The part about the lumbar contraction is something I have NEVER been taught, but it's a game changer.
This guy is awesome. I used to squat high bar and ended up with femoro patellar tendinitis and SI joint pain on left side ( forward hip tilt ). I tried to figure it out but still same. Today is my second work out with this kind of squat and I love it. I am 6 feet with long femurs also I don’t have the best morphology for squatting but with this Rippetoe squat I never felt my squat so good. The weight seems lighter mostly in the hole and the hip drive is crazy 😜. I would say it’s definitely a posterior chain exercice cause you don’t really feel your quads contracting. However your whole leg working actually. I was ready to drop the squat out but now it’s like a reborn with this. Thanks so much Mr RIPPETOE, you just saved my back and knees 🙏
i just adopted a mastiff mutt from the local pound. I have him doing the novice phase and a GOMAD and he has put on 6 pounds in the last 3 weeks. RIp, you method works for all!
Wow. Mark is a master of teaching this.
Excellent video! I’d like to see more like these if possible! Great work!
Okay! 3 minutes in and I want MORE of this guy! Holy shit! Talk about passion. I love this video
Really really liked this video and will absolutely watch more like it.
Awesome episode an very helpful to exercise right. !!!!!!!!
Im new to this channel. Right now i whitnessed a complete master schooling the apprentice in every kinda way. He's such a leading wolf, its absolutely impressing. Just be quiet and listen. This is priceless.
Lol, I loved the caption "This is when John lost control of this video" 😂 Seriously great content! And the production value of your videos has gotten amazing! Thank you for taking us along with you!
“Do it all and do it right” is what I have in my mind when I lift. Very effective to me
Great video ... thanks!
I can remember when this channel had like 15k subs. Unbelievable John. So cool.
Two of my worlds are colliding right now :)
Yep
I was thinking they should get together the other week
Same here!
Rip's the man. My guy. The instruction he gives is the best. Most men don't do hip work. They feel it's just for the ladies. Hips don't lie. Carry on.
Thanks for doing that
At exactly 11 minutes I just heard the Best motivational advice for exercise in my life. (I will never die in a nursing home.)
What an incredible opportunity it was to be able to watch this video!
My two worlds have collided! Great video... Poet and Uncle Rippy!!
Great explanation of the squat!
OK this Video is Video of the year for me,, all of these info are gold .
Same squat movement Stan Efferding just taught Juji.
Yes I saw that.
Well yes stan said it was the starting strength squat method
absolute bullshit.efferding never used that technique to win at powerlifting.hes making money with rip.delve a little further than novice level training philosophy dipshit.
@@ronaldkennedy2401 he never competed with rips squat and he regrets it cuz knee problems
@@ronaldkennedy2401 he was very clear in jujis video that he never used this method and only now does it becaus of his knees... also what money would he make everytime i do a squat with the starting strength method i have to pay 50cents to mark???
Now we're talking...that's my play yard. Great to see Mark again..
This is a free seminar
szacunek bardzo dobrze pokazane i super wiedza na najwyższym poziomie dobra robota !!!
So many tips! I thought I knew how to squat.....wrong. Great video
This video was so fun to watch
Very useful video. I actually watched right before my squat session
Worked out at his gym in college. Rip is a character.
More of this!
This technique is really helping me save my lower back from the way I was doing it before
This was so informative! Been working out Last 3 months and really happy with it but they haven’t had a squat rack until this week due to a renovation. Now seeing this I’m sure I would’ve hurt myself if I didn’t watch this. Although I have a personal trainer I’m glad I have this in my own mind of what I need to aim for. Thank you!
I’ve been looking forward to this video for a while. Also you have the same belt I do.
Thank you is been very useful
