  • John meets up with notorious strength training coach and author, Mark Rippetoe... AKA "Rip", to learn the fundamentals of a proper squat and to discuss what strength training has to offer at all stages of life. With John's multiple injuries from being a door-kicking-plane-jumping-bike-wrecking madman, the need for proper technique is crucial to longevity, strength, and preventing further injury. Rip's one-liners and sage advice is worth watching through to the end of this one!

One of the reasons that our military are so respected is that they tend to be very well trained. Strength is part of that. So........ I really liked that remark.

I first found starting strength as an EMT realizing I couldn't lift people as well as I needed to and I was having back pain from it. I realized I needed to do deadlifts to get my back stronger. I realized that I would come into the gym with back pain and leave the gym without any. Over time I was able to get much stronger and I'm much more capable now as a police officer. Strength matters a lot in the real world.
From when I started until now:
Deadlift from 165 to 460(x3), squat from 125 to 405(3x4), overhead press from 65 to 187.5, bench press from 95 to 250 and still having the endurance to best my 500 meter row and other endurance tasks since the academy.
*10/25/20 updated to current strength numbers.

Two of my favorite people in the same video together, outstanding.
Being a retired Army Ranger I've got arthritis in my hips, knees, ankles and lower back. I had doctors tell me to stop lifting weights and especially don't squat. After getting myself into terrible shape I bought Mark's book, Starting Strength, I began following it. Several years later, I'm now 58, I'm still squatting, deadlifting, and the other big lifts, I'm stronger, my legs feel better and I look better on the beach. I now also own the companion book, The Barbell Prescription (Strength Training for Life After 40). Don't listen to your doctor, listen to Mark. Lift heavy, lift often, stay strong, remember, stronger people are harder to kill. RLTW

This guy is awesome. I used to squat high bar and ended up with femoro patellar tendinitis and SI joint pain on left side ( forward hip tilt ). I tried to figure it out but still same. Today is my second work out with this kind of squat and I love it. I am 6 feet with long femurs also I don’t have the best morphology for squatting but with this Rippetoe squat I never felt my squat so good. The weight seems lighter mostly in the hole and the hip drive is crazy 😜. I would say it’s definitely a posterior chain exercice cause you don’t really feel your quads contracting. However your whole leg working actually. I was ready to drop the squat out but now it’s like a reborn with this. Thanks so much Mr RIPPETOE, you just saved my back and knees 🙏

Rip's the man. My guy. The instruction he gives is the best. Most men don't do hip work. They feel it's just for the ladies. Hips don't lie. Carry on.

This was so informative! Been working out Last 3 months and really happy with it but they haven’t had a squat rack until this week due to a renovation. Now seeing this I’m sure I would’ve hurt myself if I didn’t watch this. Although I have a personal trainer I’m glad I have this in my own mind of what I need to aim for. Thank you!
