    Met him randomly about 3 years ago at a gas station outside Wichita Falls. We were on our way back from a camping trip in Colorado. I had to return the rented travel trailer in Dallas. He noticed and was concerned about a low trailer tire I had. I had already planned to air it up and couldn’t believe who I was talking to. He shrugged off my fan boy excitement as you would expect and returned the focus to my tire. My wife and six kids were in the towing vehicle. I appreciate his no nonsense concern.

    I was always told "don't arch your back". But as the pounds increased, so did the pain. As to avoid pain, I started to arch and I found a lower drop area eased my pain. I found out the hard way. This man is exactly correct. Wish I had seen this decades ago!!!

    • @maxxxmodelz4061
      @maxxxmodelz4061 Рік тому +9

      Whoever said not to arch on the bench is crazy. Never lift your ass off the bench, but always maintain an arch. Doesn't have to be a large arch, but there are so many ways to get injured on this exercise, proper form is the most important aspect to a good bench.

      @@maxxxmodelz4061 well, the keyboard warriors on YT en FB see some footage from powerlifting meets (some athletes with really excessive arch) and start throwing a tantrum... it's bad, it's cheating, it's blahblahblah; most have never benched more than an empty barbell of course... ; I think Rippetoe explained clearly the benefits of an arch here, yep

    • @Fortress333
      @Fortress333 3 роки тому +1

      Not dying is #1, although we all do die eventually. Smart people do not die from a cracked chest benching or having their throat pinned down by the barbell, however.
      Whenever I see people bench in the gym, it usually looks like they're about to die. In fact, the seizures and spasms I see as they progress in their sets consisting of RPE-12 efforts are not unlike the death throes of soldiers who fell in battle. Okay, that was hyperbolic. In fact, I think I disrespected those brave soldiers. I take it back. Still, what I see in gyms deserves some sort of mention. It's like certain scenes from The Exorcist, you know, when that demon-possessed girl walked off the stairs backward on her/its hands and feet, that's what I see in gyms when people bench. Scary stuff. I'm too scared to even spot those people. The demon might jump hosts.

      Ze TheGame you're a moron. it's pretty good to be able to rep out 5 reps of 225 if you're like 6 foot 3 and only weight 200 pounds. long arms make benching way harder when you're not really heavy. it's different when you're a little manlet who's 5 foot 6 at 200lbs.

    I really liked and appreciated this video. I'll watch it again for its great points. One item he didn't mention though, is wrist angle. I've done this and seen others too, where the wrist isn't kept straight and thus allowed to bend back when doing heavier weights. It's a rookie mistake and a huge set up for wrist injuries. Very avoidable injuries too. So remember to keep those wrists in proper form as well.

    Thank you for this video, now i think i know how i tore my left shoulder several years ago while doing 315lbs. I believe due too improper form on my part. I had surgery for the torn rotator cuff and have been slowly recovering in gym. I will definietly keep this video in mind.

    I've been following 'Art of Manliness' as a whole (web page, yt, fb, insta,) for the last 8 months and it was a revelation, inspiration and motivation in its truest form for me. Thank you for that, Brett. And thank you for these videos.
    Although it makes me wonder: Which program do YOU use? SS, Wendler or something else entirely?

    Great Video. He was spot on. I'm one of those guys that was benching pretty heavy 40 yrs ago. (about 2.5X my bodyweight) I had to really dig to learn some of this. And, I've seen the bar on the face or neck thing. Not good and, he did a great service talking about it in this video.

    has Brett been working out for a while? I'm new to the channel and I was pretty shocked to see someone who I thought was benching for the first time in his life, bench 225 with such ease. Most guys in my gym (note this is a commercial gym similar to planetfitness) can't even lift that.

      +Art of Manliness You look good, but you don't look like you can rep out 225 for 5 reps so easily. Very impressive. Hell, you can probably do a rep at 300 lbs? How much do you weigh?

      Brett is relatively tall, he has big arms and shoulders. And he lifts from a lot of time, so repping 5 times 100 kg should not be aproblem for him.

    These videos have so much useful information, but the cameraman is dropping the ball with his poorly chosen shots. First he missed the hip movement in the OHP video, then in this one the shot was out of plane when Rip was demonstrating the correct position on the bench.
