- Trevor Lawrence has had a down-up-down trajectory in his career up to this point. While it was always easy to just assume he was good and forgive anything that happened in his rookie year, there's been talk around whether or not he's actually "good." In this video, we breakdown where it seems some of his shortcomings have stemmed from and dive into his ability against the blitz.

He inherited the 2021 equivalent of the expansion Browns and they’ve had their first back to back winning seasons since 2004-2005. All things considered the Jags are competitive with consecutive winning seasons for the first time since the mid 2000’s.
It's been a very abysmal time for us. Urban Meyer was the true rock bottom 😅 But glad we ended up with Doug Peterson. It's nice to at least be competitive again.

7 of his 14 interceptions last year came in the final 4 games of the year when he was hurt. Before he was hurt last year he was the 5th rated QB by PFF. The injuries and OL really made his overall numbers much worse.

Trevor is 24 with a playoff win and a pro bowl, quarterbacking a team that was completely irrelevant 14/15 year prior to drafting him. He will see the playoff several more times and who knows, maybe win one.
Pro bowl is meaningless. It’s all pros that matter. Trevor is a cake eater he went to an elite high school then Clemson. He’s never had to earn it under bad conditions. Clearly he’s needs all the best players on the field to be on his team to win games.

Im a die hard Jags fan that watched every game and I’m not sure, we all see the talent, but we don’t see that Tom Brady…Joe Burrow type of DAWG in Trevor. This is a make or break season for him and the front office, Trevor often teases us with his talent then leaves us shaking our heads

Lawrence can break now. He just got the bag at least a year early. I like Lawrence. He just hasn't shown nearly enough to be a Top 3 paid QB. Hype for QBs is crazy now.
Blitz was a problem because of the center being a liability. He had no confidence in his interior blocking. Additionally this year we will know forrsure with having legitimate deep threats

@123shoshan Yes, but our starting Center was ranked 38/38 center from last season. Not only did he ruin the pass game, but he made it to where we couldnt run the ball on early down. Pair this with Anton Harrison progressing into next year, im looking forward to seeing the OLine be much better.
Burrows and Lawrence not the same. That’s why Burrows highest paid QB but hurt more often. Burrows has better weapons also

Fair enough analysis. Being a Jag fan and watching every game, we still see his untapped potential and the great plays he DOES make within the bad moments. I believe in Trevor and hope he gets the better protection and dropless catches from his new receivers, he deserves! Go Jags! 💪🐆

People started overhyping this man after the Chargers game but their coaching was very bad. He is very mid but its not too late. This season will be make or break for him.

He was pressure 43% of the time on drop backs between 2.5-4 seconds, highest in the league. Most QBs struggle when they are pressured.

There's a reason they fell off a cliff once he got hurt, he couldn't cover for just how truly putrid the offensive line was(quickest average colapsing pocket in the NFL and one of the worst run block win rates in the NFL).

I think he’s a solid starter. Isn’t anywhere near that elite spot but in that mid to good tier. He’s young so there’s plenty of time to get into high end spot.
I'm a diehard Jags fan and I've watched every single snap of Trevor's NFL career (several times for some of them). I was reluctant to click on this video because the thumbnail seemed a bit bait-y, but I understand trying to appeal to get a neutral audience to click on this video. As I watched though, I was actually impressed that you gave good analytical breakdowns of what Lawrence himself actually struggled with as well as Jacksonville's struggles as a team. The part about him not trusting the line as well as playing through injuries late in the season are a major factor in the late season collapse that took place and I'm glad you acknowledged that. Trevor is far from perfect, but nobody would deny he is one of the most talented QBs in the NFL. I believe as his career continues to play out we will see him more consistently show his talents in a positive way.

A perfect example was the Charger playoff game a few years ago. Chargers were all over him and he threw 4 picks in the first half. The second half was a different story. The Chargers played prevent the entire second half and Lawrence picked them apart. Although this seems like a hero moment, this is more about Brandon Staley than it is about the Jags. Lawrence has to be more consistent if he wants to do anything in the NFL in the future.
They were not in prevent. They were in match up zones, sitting on routes and were attacking everything that got thrown. Doug came out and called plays to attack their aggressiveness. That's what cost them. And the fact that the Jags were great against the run that year so they were forced to throw. had they actually played prevent and made the Jags eat up clock we would be singing a different song. It's amazing how people talk when they don't really know what they are talking about.

@@chicagodude8888 his rookie season was wasted by urban, his second year had a good supporting cast and he had an elite run at the end of the year, third year started hot with the team going 8-3 (etn played great and kind of took touchdowns away from him, defense also got many turnovers)but then there was a combination of injuries across the offense (including himself) and bad interior blocking meaning pretty much no run game. teams knew we were forced to pass. Defense also stopped getting lucky with turnovers. It has just been an unfortunate beginning to his career, he definitely is a great qb but maybe he is not the generational guy we thought. He should be a top quarterback in this league for years to come though. I definitely wouldn’t count out a true breakout for him though, as a jags fan ive seen so many flashes from him and think he has so much talent
Just a year ago all everyone was saying is that the Jags were gunna rule the division for years. Now, unless Lawrence can right the ship, he could end up being the 3rd, or even 4th, best QB in the division over the next couple years. The Jags are the only team to not have a sustainable stretch of success in the AFC South as well.
A lot of people talk great about the Jags playoff win vs the Chargers. Don't get me wrong, they definitely had a historic comeback, but Lawrence had thrown what, 4 interceptions in the opening half? Even if he led them back to win the game eventually, he played poorly and put his team in a terrible spot that they needed to pull themselves out of.
The next week brought everyone back to reality 🤷♀️ I remember watching that game and really believing the Jags had a chance in that first quarter 😂
I agree about Trevor putting the team in a bad spot. However, the take I get from it is how resilient and focused he was. This was a 23 year old who made a bunch of mistake. But yet was able to take his licks, learn, and fight right back. That’s key for his future development. Having that mature mentality is such an underrated tool. Only a few QBs could have pulled of what he did.
It was a mix between letting Asunte Samuel Jr. get away with murder in the playoffs and bad throws, but I see your point. Regular season games 3 of those are flags.
They only won because Brandon Staley was a shitty coach. A competent team doesn’t even let them back in the game. I think the 1st half Trevor was the real Trevor but this season will be telling
@@kingjay9929 On the money, it was much more of a masterclass by Pederson and Staley being the definition of incompetent. Any average, or even below average coach does not get outcoached in the manner that he did.
Coming from a 49er fan, what makes Patrick Mahomes so exceptional is his availability. Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, Kyler Murray will have a hard time becoming better than what they are now if injuries are always plaguing them

He is living proof that the best QB college ever seen can go to a horrible team/O-Line and not win a championship cuz football is a team sport. The fact he got them to playoffs is impressive. The Bears, Jets, Browns...all teams that will destroy the future of a QB unless they get a second chance elsewhere. This past few years of NFL QB Carousel has been fun to watch cuz we get to see QB's get another chance with different offense and coaches. Its taking awhile but I think once this team builds up a little better u will see Trevor lead them a lot farther. Its going to be interesting watching Caleb this year. Im a fan of him and Trevor.
It's obvious, if the line picks up the blitz even a little bit, he's ok. If he's pressured even a little bit, he throws badly. It's more coaching and scheme. He needs quick hot reads for blitzes and being on schedule to not get into 3rd and long.
Doug Peterson os coaching him up. He will get there. He was also running for his life so that might help not to be under constant attack.
He is the prince that was promised. I’ve been screaming from the rooftops how bad TLaw’s OLine was. It was open season on him, and they couldn’t run the ball at all either.
The best receiver of his entire career is his college teammate that’s WR2 in Cinci. He threw to Kirk and Zay Jones for a combined 2000 yards. Now he’s hopefully got true X in Brian Thomas, we really shouldn’t be surprised if he lights it up this year.
Jags need to get a competent GM, that’s what’s been holding the team back.
Honestly thought Lawrence played his best football when he was a Freshman at Clemson. Then thought he regressed every year after that. Maybe like he thought he didn't need to get any better because he was better than anyone in college already. Personal did not think he would become a elite QB when he was drafted.

He is definitely not a bust - but he has not been good enough either. He did not take a step forward last year. Yes our O-Line was SOFT...and one of the worst O-Lines I have seen in years...but Trevor needs to improve no doubt. He has ALOT of weapons...line SHOULD be better this year...this is Year 4...he needs to play to his potential. We shall see.

I think the analysis on Trevor not trusting in O line is spot on. He gets hit a lot which causes panic passes. However he kills zones, I’d say he’s even good against blitzes. It’s man coverage where he gets shook.

I wonder if getting sacked 17 million times in your first 2 years you may tend to get a quick trigger when being blitzed no! I think this proves that you should sit quarterbacks for at least 1 year and make sure you build a offensive line for them before you feed them to the wolvs.
This is a team game. The offensive line was mush because of injuries. Give him time he is still learning but already plays at a high level
Interestingly enough he’s the second Doug Pederson led QB (out of 2) that has mid/decent stats that don’t tell the whole story. Carson Wentz was also 100% eye test while most of his stats were alright.
I defended Wentz saying the things he can do were amazing only to be rebutted with “yea but he threw for 250yds and 2TDs while my QB is throwing for 300yds 3TDS”. And I’m like yea…. Can’t argue with that… but I swear Wentz is amazing! You gotta see it to believe it!
Trevours first year was coached by Urban myer (a shit coach.) So he had little to no help season one. Season 2 he had a competent coach in doug pederson he led the jags to a 27 - 0 comeback against the chargers. In 2022. He was injured in the second half of 2023, and his #1 target in the christan kirk was taken out late in the year. Every qb plays worse when injured. So no trevour is still a good qb and the best qb we've had in years.

Did we forget that Trevor messed up his shoulder mid season and still played when that injury would’ve made most get a season ending surgery?? Many of those picks were due to that.
Our offensive line was all fucked up. Everything changed when we signed Mitch Morse at center. We’re back in it with TLaw at the helm and getting that #AFCsouth title

Maybe because I was a teacher but when I view players and people at just any job is not all growth is linear. In fact, it rarely is and just as importantly not everyone learns and evolves at the same rate. Some guys take off right away, other guys take some time to put it all together, some guys never put it together, some guys are great at the outset but never improve. Geno Smith is a really good quarterback now but it took him awhile. Kurt Warner had an up and down career as he wasn't even good enough to be a starter, then Greatest Show on Turf, then getting benched and being mid with the Giants, starting off mid with the Cardinals, then took off again. Even Brady, he was a solid quarterback at first, then he was good, then great. I don't know where Lawrence is going to land but it's still too early to determine he's a bust and/or won't be great.
His physical abilities are great. His brain however is gronk.
Now the front office stuff is cleared up if kirk ,davis, thomas, and evans stay healthy enough he's got the secondary to score, the oline could be better but they weren't atrocious when i watched some of his film ,Cleveland scherff and Robinson anchor up front, he's running out of excuses especially if the oline holds up in a fairly even afc south except for the Texans (they can own the conference for a while with that talent)
I think he’ll be okay. He fell off the cliff hard when he played injured, and losing his number one receiver didn’t do him any favors. Calvin Ridley is good, but not good enough to fill the shoes of a number 1 atm. But honestly, his performance before crap hit the fan was kinda underwhelming. Still, I have faith in him, he just needs to stop trying so hard and stay poised.
IMO , the problem with Lawrence is that , from Day 1 , he was just handed the keys to the franchise. He has never been challenged , going back to Cartersville. Don't get me wrong , I'm a Trevor fan. I just was thinking maybe Jax would've drafted a QB , mid-rounds , to maybe give him something to think about. Rattler? Hartman? The kid from Tulane? I don't know but competition brings out the best in most.

Justin Herbert as a rookie with a trash coach injured top weapons and 32nd ranked O line broke every rookie record except 1 in 15 games. Elite QBs demonstrate poise, resilience, and good decision making under duress. Meaning there is some baseline of tangibles\intangibles that allows QBs to still play well in bad situations. If your QBs ability to be good , fluctuates with the team then your guy just isnt that good. Adapting to surroundings to still be productive as USUal is the Mark of a good 1. Let the other short comings of the team be the obvious issue.
If your QB is getting killed by the blitz the OC needs to be looked at. Playcalling under Press Taylor is shaky at best.

*This* is an excellent video. You had a thought, but you didn't allow your ego to force it to be right. You saw the o-line as A Problem. While you're not wrong, it's not the entire story though.
I had seen a video on *Pederson's* play-calling from last year & it's clear that this wasn't what was being used _this_ year. (You noticed that he wasn't terrible against the blitz last year). He handed the p[lay-calling off to Someone Else & that someone else never got it to mesh.
It's hard to tell how much of what aspects of an offense new play-callers affect. Terrible o-line play followed Frank Reich around because he would meddle in it, but because he was a micro-manager & not for the team's benefit. Someone finally called out how Shane Waldron's successes are actually those of Dave Canales & that without him, the Seahawks inexplicably declined. (It was _not _*_all due_* to injured o-line players). So we have examples of an HC & an OC who also diddled with the o-line even though that has its own separate coach. One affected the passsing game terribly, the other the run _and_ passing game.
Press Taylor seems to be learning on the job, but Pederson didn't ease him into this. He threw him into the fire & despite all the bad they were still in the race late in the year. Not sure what Pederson thinks he's doing watching it all burn though. Is it to get more $ to take back the play-calling duties?
I honestly don't know.
As a Seahawks fan, my opinion is Trevor Lawrence is so lucky that Lamar Jackson gets the scrutiny of a generational prospect picked #1 overall while he gets to be one of the best QB prospects ever with the expectations of the last QB taken in the first round.
And HOW MANY offensive coordinators has this guy had in his very short career???

Had to endure the Urban Meyer sht show his first season which made that entire year one of disjointed schemes.
The blessing of Doug Pederson last season lead to real promise, but injuries obviously limited him for half the season.
He is only 24 years old: I'm betting this year he makes a big step up in his performance.

T Law is a franchise level QB who has struggled with injuries, mediocre offensive lines, until recently a lack of talent at skill positions, and the weight of being a #1 overall pick. I don’t think he’s quite top 10 but he’s still very talented.

I honestly think the offensive system isn’t that good, you saw how bad it got with the eagles the last couple years the coach was there. I just feel the coaching in general is failing him , a lot of the time you see him having to make it up as no one is getting open. They even used Ridley as a decoy a lot of the time last season, don’t run the ball consistently. He is good, but was set back by Urban and isn’t helped with injuries and play calling . But he definitely isn’t bad.
Tlaw before the high ankle sprain and after it last season were 2 different players, but he's not what was promised YET.

he's been frustrating in the sense that from an actual evaluation perspective, he's a smokeshow, as in he's literally just been a huge hype machine. Where he was called generational and the reality is, the entire time he's a raw prospect. the narrative was this guy is generational, and when ur waiting to hear why, no one actually broke down his game while anyone who questions this is put on mute and dismissed. he's had the greatest marketing campaign in history, i'm not saying in some ways it's not deserved. he's not even bad with context, but to tell the truth subjectively there have been better prospects in the last decade that didn't get this label. Celeb for example is the better prospect in mostly every way, up until pre draft, he was never called generational. they don't really want him on prospect mount rushmore with Peyton, and luck and T-law, meanwhile he's just better and t-law is more of a HWS project. he's so long limbed and the mechanics were so raw, it's never been fair to him and the team around him in college was so good, it's never been fair because he'll never have an honest narrative or evaluation of himself as a player in his life because the pov of him is so skewed by his own hype and even sadder, he never asked for it. so when were here and he's improved but his stats have worsened. its a hyperbolic mess, when truth be told, he's where he should be, he never belonged in a football god label. his skillset is only starting to stabilize where he's even capable of meeting expectations.
As a Colts fan, Peyton Manning didn’t get to and win his first SB until his 9th season an all time great. I don’t see Peyton level elite from Lawrence, but he’s not terrible. I haven’t been impressed however I only watch two of his games every year. I’ll admit last year he had it pretty rough with the injuries, and I can see him getting better over the years.

He is a QB that will lose a game for a team, but not one that can carry the team to victory. He reminds me a lot of Rivers. Great physical abilities, but has the innate ability to turn the ball over with careless play. Most of his turnovers don't fall under the trying too hard category(Favre-like), they fall under the what were you thinking or did you have your eyes open when you threw the ball.
I'm shocked you managed to do a whole video about the flaws of the 23 Jags offense without mentioning Luke Fortner being the worst run blocking center in football down the stretch. Watch him against Vita Vea in week 16.
Best thing he can ever do for his career long-term is get out of Jacksonville as soon as possible. He's the definition of Jags football, things run smooth when the pressure isn't on but as soon as they get smacked in the mouth they fail... every single time... prove me wrong lol, its impossible but go ahead and try Jags fans. The Jags are soft and even when they felt "strong" they still got eliminated in hilarious fashion. Just imagine Lawrence on a strong rebuilding team like the Seahawks, he would find success soon but he's a Jag so thats exactly what he will always be until he leaves, a Jag.
Imagine if Trevor Lawrence was on Philly or Kansas City with one of their offensive lines and tell me how you think he’d perform then. Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence have had nothing but putrid offensive lines in their short careers. Burrow has done better than Lawrence with it but it takes a toll eventually as he can’t stay healthy an entire season because his line is so bad. Why did Mahomes and Brady never need any big name WR’s for the most part to win a Super Bowl? Because all they need is an offensive line to give them time to throw the ball.
First year with a WR1 with a similar style like Tee Higgins. We shall see.

All Rooks thrown into the fire get a pass, since it's their first rodeo. But Lawrence now has 3 seasons under his belt, and it's been a mixed bag, fo'sho'. And since "you're only as good as your last game", I'd say he's not too good right now -- JAX's losing the division AND playoff spot to HOU at season's end just is the end result of a bad stretch for TL after Week 11. Still the best out of weak 2021 QB class, but that's not saying much. Not sure how much growth he has in him, regardless of health, going forward . . . .

Total fumbles should still count. Just because you got lucky your teammate jumped on the ball doesn't mean it wasn't a bad play from the QB.

I mean he’s on the jags. There’s a lot that goes into it. Peterson scheme is a little archaic too. Lots of hole shots and deep comebacks like it’s the 90s. I hope they get a better OC in there or maybe a new HC. Doug is solid not great imo. I don’t really see him as a guy that’ll help Trevor get to that next level

Pederson is not great. He won a SB with an elite defense and trick plays.... Lawrence has talent around him but a terrible coach and owner combo is why he isn't performing. Look at CJ Stroud, great Owner, GM and Coaches.
Press Taylor was in charge of play calling for a majority of the season. By the time Doug took back playcalljng duties, the whole team including Trevor sustained a lot of injuries
