  • What is "warm" and what is "cool"? What does color theory say about it and how do we interpret that into makeup and skin? Let's discuss!

    Ahhhh thank you, I’ve intuitively known my skin was neutral to slightly warm, but have been told by others i must be cool because I’m not very yellow. I’m very much somewhere in between violet-red and red-orange. This explains so much!

      I have a similar problem! Because I’m kind of neutral, I don’t think my skin reads as warm or cool, but both. I have a lot of yellow in my skin, despite being fair, I have a bit of an olive undertone. But I also have a lot of pink and red in my skin as well, especially my cheeks and chin, and around my nose. Depending on the time of year I can be more pinkish or more yellow… also depends on how much sun I’ve gotten, and if I’ve sustained any kind of natural tanning from being in the sun. So this color wheel is just brilliant! I want to get one, to see if it can help me find the right foundation colors to correct my unevenness.

    I bought the color fan just a couple of days ago and I think the violet-red matches well. I have a very noticeable pinkness in my skin that I believe is my 'Overtone' (which I believe throws confusion into it and that subject is not addressed enough) plus sun damage on my neck and chest known as Poikiloderma which skews my undertone. In the 80s, when my skin was young, I was color typed through Beauty for All Seasons as a Contrasting Autumn Panache. So I'm assuming that would indicate a less warm undertone. Maybe I am considered in the current 12 type color system as a Soft Autumn with Soft Summer as a sister season? Muted is definitely one of my traits.

      Glad you received The Flesh Tone Fan™. I am not savvy on all of the terms that seasonal analysis use. I look strictly at undertone and follow color theory from there. Violet-red is a common undertone however is often confused for yellow-orange. But are very similar but YO is warmer. Think porcelaine vs. peaches-and-cream.

    Terri, you are the queen of color theory. I have been told so many contradicting things about my undertones...I have darken my hair color a little but it is reddish strawberry blonde, my face gets red easily but any foundation with pink in it looks awful on me...my veins are purple green and blue... does it make sense that yellowish foundations seem to look better on me? Any insight ? Thank you for your time.

    This is so helpful. I am not a make up artist. I have had many people tell me I am clearly cool toned because pink and red is the predominant hue. All cool toned make up an clothing makes me look sleep deprived. "Neutral" foundations look gray on me and many foundations look too pink on me. I'm looking forward to looking at the rest of your content.

    • @TerriTomlinson
      @TerriTomlinson  Рік тому +2

      You sound warm to me! Remember that red is warm and your skin is naturally yellow. If cool things turn gray and pink on you, you are probably yellow-orange.

      @@TerriTomlinson but if red-violet is COOL red, and Red-orange is warm red, then pure red is NEUTRAL, not warm.

    • @TerriTomlinson
      @TerriTomlinson  Рік тому

      @@victoriataylor5584 hello. I'm not sure why you would think red has to be "neutral". Red is warm and anything moving towards yellow from red is warm. Red only starts to cool when it begins mixing with blue. In flesh tones red-violet skins are cooler than red skins but still show some degree of warmth.

  • @amenaahmad9762

    Hey Terri can you make a video dedicated to not so common undertones ? Such as a peach undertone or a olive undertone ? And also about people who have an undertone that doesn’t fall in one box such as warm neutral etc ?

    • @TerriTomlinson
      @TerriTomlinson  3 роки тому +4

      I'm so sorry I haven't answered sooner, I just did not see this. A peach undertone would be a yellow-orange to orange in a light skin tone. Olive is represented on the wheel. As far as "neutral", I don't believe that it exists in skin. Every skin has an undertone and every skin will fall into one of the boxes. In my experience the skins that appear the most even color-wise are yellow and yellow-greens. Thank you.

      @@TerriTomlinson I have a question, do you think cameras then are accurate about helping you find out your undertone because I have a site called Color Grab, and so far the site says Brown, which is my skin tone, but the rest says Orange, red, red-orange, or red beige.

    • @TerriTomlinson
      @TerriTomlinson  3 роки тому +1

      @@victoriataylor5584 I think using cameras can be tricky because you don't know what color does in your monitor. Or how it is lit. Also, you want a system that describes color in terms that are universally understood.

    This is so interesting! I have always understood that pure red is, in fact, neutral. There seems to be conflicting information if you dig into it. This is why the red in skin does not determine warmth or coolness.

    • @TerriTomlinson
      @TerriTomlinson  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Patti, thank you for the reply. I've never heard Red referred to as neutral. Everything that I have learned and been taught says that Red is warm. Red in the skin is always warm until it starts to mix with blue. Just like yellow in the skin is always warm and cools off to "olive" as it mixes with blue.

    Can you tell us how to use the wheel to find blush and bronzer

    • @TerriTomlinson
      @TerriTomlinson  4 роки тому +1

      Hello, so sorry for the late reply but we didn't catch this comment. To find options for blush you would need to find the person's skin undertone on the wheel first. From there you know that analogous colors are most natural and as you move further away from the skin you get more color payoff. And complimentary colors give you the most contrast. Bronzer is simply a deeper version of the skin for a true "tan" or a deeper analogous color for more.

    I love your color wheel. For someone like me, who's brain is completely analytical, color theory is a nightmare. If you put two brown eyeshadows next to one another, I could tell you which is cool and warm, but if you showed me a white woman and asked me her undertone, I wouldn't be able to tell you. I see a white woman. For the life of me, I don't know how people see any blue, red, green, etc. I see a white person who might have a little tan or something. I know the "tests" you can do on yourself to tell if you have warm or cool undertones, but I sure can't see it by looking at someone. That's what's so frustrating. To me, that can't be learned:(

    • @TerriTomlinson
      @TerriTomlinson  4 роки тому +4

      Teaching someone how to see color is very difficult. However you can train your eye. I'm glad the wheel is helping you to see within skin. I think if you start looking at all skin as brown, with different "hues" that come through you might be able to define the color within. Thank you for the reply.
