This is what I need in my pocket. Never interested in learning color in my life, but now that I’m picking up a new hobby (photography) it makes sense to start learning the basics color theory.
Such a helpful tutorial. The day I received my "Color Wheel", I searched for just such a thing - tutorial - and, as the search gods would have it, I fell upon yours. I now have a solid just-the-facts source to view and review many times. Thank you.
No one has bothered to explain this to me, ever and I've been in art school off and on for two decades! Thank you!! I wish I'd been paying attention a long time ago. I'm now teaching color theory to my students and will pass this on first thing.
Thank you. Getting in to miniature painting and got my first color wheel today. Saved me a ton of time not searching for better videos because yours is the best.
I just order a pack of three wheels off Amazon and was wondering what was the difference between the three, now I get it! You may have thought this was super basic and maybe it was but you've set me on the right path!
Wow, NOW, I know or have an understanding of this color wheel. Thank you SO much. I have a better understanding when I am shown and explained instead of left to reading it on my own! I appreciate your explanation of this and cannot thank you enough!
I'm so happy to find a UA-cam "How To" video on How to Read a Color Wheel For Artists (Pocket Color Wheel). I just purchased a new "Pocket Color Wheel" on 8-6-2024 at Hobby Lobby as my old "Pocket Color Wheel" stopped working at some point (Somehow it is stuck and does NOT move at all. Perhaps something got between the wheel that glued it stuck). ALSO I happen to be one of your paid students and now finishing up on Summer Zooms 2024 (various video topics on color mixing) and the beginning watercolor module.
I have had an assortment of color wheels, apps and now color cubes. I have been so frustrated trying to pick colors for projects and have give up many times over the years. Thanks for such an easy to understand informative video! I especially loved the explanation of grays at the end! Much appreciated 💜
Excellent! I've had my color wheel for a year+ and haven't really understood enough to use it. I especially found the last bit about value helpful--explains why some of my painting is blah--too flat as my colors tend to fall between 6-8. Thanks!!
@@ArtSummits hello, can you please guide me how and where I can get this color wheel, I will be very thankful to you if can guide me about it's availability Thanks and regards 🙏

Ohhhhh, thank you for this! I just bought this color wheel, in the hopes it would help me understand color theory. Alas, it wasn’t helping much. Then I found your video, and NOW, I understand. THANK YOU!!!

Thank you for making the color wheel understandable. I'm 73 and took up adult coloring books recently. If you know nothing about drawing or painting, coloring is relaxing and engaging. What am learning quickly is that not all colors look good together. With all the detail in a coloring book it's almost overwhelming to choose colors. This will help tremendously.
From my understanding, it's to utilize the right shade to create contrast and have the right values in the right place, although she was very brief about it
Hi Susan, you can find a color wheel at most arts and crafts supply stores. They are also available online through retailers such as Amazon. You can find some here: amzn.to/2Z8LzSI
@@andrewsanders5053 Thks Andrew! I live in a small town about an hour to nearest arts/craft store that I'm aware of! Online I guess would be best! Called local office supply giddy said had one but sold it $5 or $6 they said. Thks again! 😊
I don't know why some people call colors made from a mixture of two primaries "tertiary" just because they're closer in hue to one of the primaries. A tertiary is just what it sounds like: it's a color made from THREE primaries, which makes sense when you consider that a secondary is made from two. So the tertiaries are the earth tones. A lot of artists and art educators do know this but the percentage that doesn't is surprising. The misuse of the term "tertiary" is just the tip of the iceberg of poor thinking in the art world. It's a shame that the art world is so cordoned off from math and science, because things could be so much clearer for artists.
Thank you. In 78 years I've never understood color You make it logical, intuitive and simple.
I am 56 - had the wheel 30 years + never quite understood - thank you for sharing your wisdom 💡 🙏

Very nice, where can i buy color wheel
Most art supply stores carry them. You can find them online as well.
Thank you !🙂
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for this clear and simple explanation ! Do you recommend any colour theory book for a beginner?
I wish I could fine a color wheel that is tuned more to Photography.
I'm confused. If a "tint" is what you get when you add white to a color, why does "neutral tint" watercolor make a color darker?
🙏😘
How do I use the wheel to know what colour wash or glaze to put over the top of something too bright to calm the colour down
You can use a color's complement (the color directly opposite on the color wheel) to mute it if it is too bright.
There are two tetrads on the wheel? a rectangle and a square?
Yes! They both give you a 4 color scheme with 2 pairs of complementary colors.

Helpful, except the end part where you talk about the gray values. You didn't explain how to use that on the color wheel. Thank you.
Ashley references the grayscale at around the 9 minute mark and addresses some uses for it at 9:41 and following.
