- Ever since Super Smash Bros. became a worldwide icon, numerous platform fighters have been released attempting to get the shine that Smash has. But which of these have succeeded in doing so? As someone who has 200 hours in Brawlhalla and vaguely follow its competitive scene, I can a test that I have no idea how they can manage to score such absurd crossovers

@@ixzaluoh8997 thats the way I felt when learning the game, when you treat it as a "Smash substitute" you are gonna under value the game and not have a good time, but if you treat it as its own game and its own entity in the platform fighter space its becomes a lot more fun

@@krowmoonlight Idk, I literally don't see the appeal of the game but it's still a bit suspicious they're holding consistent players for it's lifespan.
I'll say that as a filthy casual, I usually will play brawlhalla with my friends if we want to play platform fighters because it's free, can be played on our computers, and I generally enjoy the mechanics of it. I don't play against other people, so maybe it is mostly bots, but I also think it's possible there are at least a few players who don't want to spend money on a plat fighter who just play the game.
Idk I know a good amount of people personally that play the game a lot with each other and online. They have tried to get me into the game but didnt appeal to me. I can see though how people enjoy it enough to come back to it over and over again
@@Xanek it's free and easy to pick up, that's why it has a consistent player base. the appeal for me, is that it's the only platform fighter I'm genuinely good at, and how simple the fundamentals are. I still hate the game though

I know I'm taking the bait and being annoying, but Smash Flash 2 really is a good fangame. Old screenshots will of course look old, but current updates look and feel modern. The pixel art's top notch and the devs focus on quality over quantity. Online is admittedly barebones, but overall just a top 5 Smash fangame imo
Also, tip. If anyone new wants to play the game, change the settings first. Set the controls, items, stage hazards, etc. and go to Training mode. So many UA-camrs just immediately jump into "Smash" mode with no prep and it gets messy

Nah man, not brawlhalla on bottom tier, I played that game for 2 years straight before ultimate came out, it was hella fun, the game is super fast and you can do insane combos with the games mechanics

As a competitive Brawlhalla player, the game has a unique flavor to it that most people wouldn’t get
It’s also just insanely fun to play with friends, especially if everyone can play the game at a decent level
Also considering that it’s F2P, it’s also mad accessible

As someone who's always been an outsider peaking in for smash, project M was so fun. Xanadu PM is what got me into watching smash in the first place lmao

Could've called Nickelodeon Brawl "The Water of Life" to play off the Dune motif that it allows you to awaken your mind.
I probably would've put PS All Stars as "Missed Potential" personally. Like the game has some cool ideas & concepts, gameplay-wise is mainly where the game wasn't exactly the best executed.
I still think the gameplay is fun. There are some satisfying combos/kill confirms, good gameplay mechanics, and cool supers. But my main issue is that there is no hp bar which makes some games really drag and homogenizes how you kill an opponent. I do also think they could focus a bit more on the platforming/movement aspect of Platform Fighters but I really like how it feels more like a traditional fighting game than other platform fighters.

I totally agree with the PM take. It was amazing blend of the Melee and Brawl communities that we haven't seen since. (Some bias because it was my first competitive Smash game. Waddle dashing was my first character specific tech. There's not been anyone like D3 since)

I met coney at a project M tournament, so it's the best game. Friend helped me carry a large TV into the venue from my car. He's a nice guy, but kinda short so carrying the tv was awkward

i used to hate how coney did tiers but ive long since come to love it, especially when he makes it their problem.
Honestly the term "smash clone" needs to die ASAP. It's a very reductive name that writes off games that might exceed their inspirations as cheap copies, and it's honestly not healthy for the genre as a whole to look at a single game as the end all be all and everything else as something trying to imitate it. Referring to the genre as "platform fighters" should be normalized as soon as possible and we should leave terms like "smash clone", "smash-like", "smash killer", etc. in the trash where they belong

Brawlhalla is easy to explain. It's free, it's on every platform, and it copied basically every good monetization idea from Fortnite. They build a huge user base, get backed by a major publisher, and then offer promotional deals to get the crossovers. People talk about them getting stuff like SpongeBob or TMNT but forget each of those happened right around when one of the Nickelodeon All Stars games was launching.

Sorry for anyone who hates this but I gotta say it. I do think brawlhala is weirdly getting so many crossovers however me and my roommate play duos every day and rarely if ever match into the same team I think the player base is strong as a casual game to play with a certain friend and I do think it’s as balanced as a fighting game I’ve ever played

I play Brawlhalla and agree with Coney. The game is not good, especially compared to other plat fighters.
@@goodrttFor what reasons? I also play Brawlhalla 600+ hours. It’s the best platform fighter imo. Fun combos, super balanced, good weapons, you can’t spam projectiles, no juggling the opponent, dodge reads are super satisfying, etc
@@dzzychicken8546 Aesthetically, the game and legends lack expression. The closest thing is skins and emotes, but those aren’t free. In terms of gameplay, I don’t like the huge stages and the stage list for ranked. Controlling the legends on controller is also wonky, and keyboard is the clear cut best input for the game which is lame. The game is playable and able to be played proficiently, but other plat fighters do that on a more visceral level. I never would have touched the game if Nintendo Online wasn’t a fluke. Maybe I am not good enough at the game to enjoy it. I will say, the best part of Brawlhalla for me is playing with friends in customs.

The absolute bias against Brawlhalla despite knowing absolutely nothing about the game is wild. It's the one platform fighter better than Smash so you just say "oh, it's only bots and there to make money", when you know absolutely nothing about its history or why it's even popular in the first place.
If you gave the game an actual chance maybe you'd see there's actual potential.
As someone who's played brawlhalla for a long time it's a boring cash grab the game is unbalanced and it was way more fun before they leaned heavily into microtransactions and made all of the new fighters they add the main selling point
@someonestolemytoast2139 It's fine to think it isn't a good game, but this is just lying. In Smash Bros you have to pay money to unlock a few measly DLC characters, while in Brawlhalla you can always earn them all for free.
They're also constantly handing out free cosmetics, and they're always making tweaks to the game to better the experience. You never HAVE to pay money to play the game. Saying otherwise is straight up just a lie. Ubisoft might be a shitty studio, but Blue Mammoth Games absolutely isn't.

But also, aren't new legends always a thing to look forward to in games? How is it a main selling point in brawlhalla when all new legends are free?
@LtLuverlady the new characters in brawlhalla aren't fun or different the game is just boring and incredibly unbalanced what I mean about new characters being bad is that the developers main marketing is "look we have the rock and Rayman in the same game" it feels like the fortnite of platform fighters just recycled garbage with a new skin and nostalgia bait keeping it alive the difference between smash and brawlhalla's dlc is smash released characters with different playstyles and feels to them new tech is still being discovered and used you can't say "brawlhalla is better cause you can get them for free" when the difference in quality between the games Is huge
It's just strange because people still look up to everything they add to the game. The game isn't just about the microtransactions or crossovers. Balance on the otherhand is a different story, and while I think Brawlhalla is fairly unbalanced, it's no where as bad as Smash Ultimate.
I've played Smash my whole life basically, the same amount of time I have on Brawl likely, so that isn't bias towards Smash. I have my gripes about the game but I don't hate it.

brawlhalla is a really weird game. im good at it, and i know that if i spend time practicing it i could be really good at it, but honestly, it's just fucking boring lmao so i just don't play it unless my friends want to lol...
Project M was HUGELY popular in my friend group (nerds/stoners) when I was in highschool. We had a really cool physics teacher that would let us use the projector to run tournaments during lunch. They would take a week or so to complete but it was hype as hell to talk about throughout the week waiting for your next match
I've been playing brawlhalla for over 8 years and it rightfully deserves the popularity its gotten for itself, in spite of what smash players think of it.

Brawlhalla is the best fighting game for first-time fighting game players. I know that might sound weird, but as someone with close to 10k hours in that game I learned how to ACTUALLY play video games by mastering Brawlhalla's mechanics. Sure I haven't played it in months, but that game has a special place in my heart.
