After LOTS of experimenting, I found the best way to ensure the paint doesn’t bleed through your stencil, giving you great results on any project!
With these simple tips, you can use even the most detailed laser stencils without frustrated bleedthrough.

CAN YOU STENCIL OVER STAINED WOOD?
Adding a stencil to stained wood is not an easy feat. For one thing, you can’t touch up mistakes with paint as you could on a painted piece of furniture or sign.
The wood on the sides of the drawers was pretty old and had minor water damage making it uneven and cracked in spots. I wanted to leave the sides of the drawers in their original state so that would mean I had to get the stencil right the first time, without any paint bleed.
What made this process a little more difficult was the fact that the stencil I chose was SO DETAILED. I think I probably picked the most ornate laser stencil in existence.
Detailed laser stencils are more prone to bleedthrough, unfortunately, but fortunately, there are some easy stencil hacks to help you get great results on your next paint project!
HOW TO STENCIL ON WOOD WITHOUT BLEEDTHROUGH
Because I tend to overdo things, I did a lot of experimenting with every stencil hack I could find. Then, when I discovered the ones that worked best, I found out which ones worked well in combination for a perfect stencil every time. I have no doubt that you will have the same success with your own project!
It covers what paint to use to stencil on wood, the best way to paint with stencils, & how to prevent stencil bleed on wood. What do you prep the surface with? Did you wait for it to dry? How long? What kind of stencil adhesive spray did you use? Does it leave a residue? Why did you use Mod Podge? Did you wait for the Mod Podge to dry before painting?
That moment when you pulled the stencil and reveal the result was awesome! I also have a dresser from my grandmother and wanted to keep the state the inside is in. The outside needs a lot of TLC. Thank you for this wonderful tutorial!
THank you so much for your kind comment!
Great video! It answered questions I had about bleeding. I’m a beginner and so glad I found your channel!
Thank you so much Beverly! So glad it was helpful!
I’ve just been watching this video and have ordered all of the bits to have a try! I’m excited….can’t wait!
Now I understand all the steps I was missing and caused bleeding!
Thank you for sharing 🤗
You're so welcome!
This is really informative, thank you for sharing. What paint is good to use if you want to paint the wood a color and then add stencil. Thank you.
Thank you for these tips!! Will definitely come in handy for some stencil projects!♡
So glad it helped Jaime!
This helped me a great deal. Thank you, my stencil came out just the way I wanted
Very good! I have never seen a more beautiful dresser!!!!
Thank you for the great info! I used your affiliate links to buy my supplies and I can wait to try your hacks.
Awesome! Thank you!
You truly have no idea how thrilled I am to have found this video! I have tried COUNTLESS times to stencil and it always came out looking horrid! Always bled. I googled and researched and tried everything I could to get it to work but I finally just gave up.
Thank you sincerely from the bottom of my heart!
I had never seen a hack like this for stenciling! And you won’t believe this but I too, am painting my grandmothers dresser and wanted to do something with the drawers. She always made most of my dresses when I was growing up. Funny you mentioned that in your video about your own grandmother and lace:)
My granny was very creative and good at everything! I miss her and have been worried to death about messing up this dresser of hers. Your videos have helped me lots today! Thanks a bunch!
Thank you so much! Your sweet comment made my day. Be sure to send me a pic so I can see how your grandma's dresser turned out. Thank you again for sharing about her and your project!
Do you have tips for stenciling on canvas that I painted a base color?
Are you able to wash the stencils and re-use them?
I'm wondering if you could eliminate a step and just add your paint to the mod podge???
Hi, I did a custom underpainting and dont want to ruin it with modge podge. I used a uv coating first. What do you think?
What product did you apply before everything with the sponge?
What kind of paint?
I applied a clear coat - Varathane Waterbased Polyurethane to help fill any cracks and make the surface smoother. The paint I used was Sherwin Williams Emerald in Benjamin Moore Hale Navy
Can the stenciled drawer be covered with a glossy finish?
Just wondering what you used to prep the surface and what the brand name of the stencil adhesive was?
Excellent video. What product was used to prep the wood in Step 1?
Amanda Banks It is an optional clear coat to fill in any cracks. I share more about this in the post. Thanks Amanda!
Prep with what ?
Sweet idea!
How do you get the stencil adhesive residue off after removing the stencil and do you remove the stencil after paint has dried or before? Thank you
I let them soak a few minutes first in hot water before scrubbing them with Dawn. Hope this helps!
What did you brush on when you said "First prep the surface?"
Interesting. I’m doing stencils on craft wood and it’s bleeding through. Thank you!
Hopefully some of these tips will help. Let me know if you have any questions! :)
Hi, you didn’t say what you prepped the wood with, was it mod podge? Did you wait for it to dry before you started to paint the stencil?
Sorry about that. I prepped the wood with Varathane's Waterbased Clear Coat to help fill in any gaps. This is an optional step but great if your wood is really uneven. Thanks Al!
I love your idea, thanks very much. 🌻🌹
You are so welcome Alicia. Have a great day!
Thank you Alicia!
Is it the same technique over painted wood the same as over unpainted wood as in this video? Does the Mod Podge build up on the stencil after multiple uses?
Lovespitbulls It’s the same technique for both painted and unpainted! I didn’t have problems with the mod podge building up
@@RenovatedFaith Thanks, this will be my first use of a stencil and I don't want to do it wrong and have to "fix it." :-)
By the way, what instruments are best (I use sponges but it tends to bleed more) and should I let the paint dry before removing the stencils?
Great questions! I like to use those spouncers - little sponges with a handle. And I use just vertical movements to avoid bleedthrough. And I let the mod podge dry about an hour to be on the safe side but you don't have to.
I like using the cheap triangle makeup sponges when doing stencils! They work really great! And if you don't already have a stenciling brush or sponges, you can pick a pack up pretty much anywhere for real cheap! I use the larger side of the sponge with a little bit of paint, and just tap it on the stencil. A little bit of paint with those goes a long way too!
What is the liquid she prepped the surface with before the stencil is applied?
So sorry I didn't explain that. I used Varathane's Waterbased Polyurethane as an optional step to fill in any cracks before stenciling. I just brushed it on, and let it dry for a couple hours.
What is Mod Poge and why are you using it?
Does the Mod Podge need to dry first before adding the paint? Thank you!
The glue looks clear so I guess you do. It’s just so the stencil doesn’t move
She doesn't respond for some reason
Let it dry about an hour.
Glad you asked this question because I thought the tutorial was great, to the point, not too long with Drawn out explanations but I wasn’t clear on the Modge podge either
Do you let the mod log dry completely before applying the paint ?
Yes, dry completely n it will look clear. Mod p helps with small lines on wood so paint don’t bleed. I have been using this method for a long time n result is amazing. Good luck
LOVE THIS!!!
Mod podge! Who knew!?😊
What is the purpose of the modge podge?
BooBoo Lou It just prevents the paint from seeping under the stencil
I sprayed stencil to hold, applied modge podge, thought it was dry, painted with acrylic paints...both modge podge and paint peeled up with the stencil...paint nor modge podge stuck to wood...what did I do wrong?
modge podge has to fully dry. I use a heat gun on low to speed it up:) hope this helps
I have the same problem, even letting mod podge dry completely. Any ideas?
Do you need to let mod podge try before painting?
The glue looks clear so I should think you do. It’s just so the stencil doesn’t move
I let it dry about 30 minutes. That seemed to work best! Thanks Sharon
What did you prep the wood with?
I prepped it with a clear coat to prevent the paint from seeping into cracks. There should be a link in the description with the blog post but it’s Varathane water-based poly! Thanks Janice!
Do you let it dry between MP coat and paint
Yes, I let it dry about 30 minutes
I cannot find on your site what you "prepped" the surface with?
Varathane water-based polyurethane
@@RenovatedFaith yes please always let us know each step what used tyou =)
How long did you let the mod podge dry?
I think about 30 minutes or dry to the touch.
What did you prep the surface with?
It is Varathane Waterbased Polyurethane. It's not a necessity but it helps to make the surface smoother.
What do you apply in step #1?
That was what I was wondering.
It was a clear coat to fill in cracks. I y’all about this more in the post but it’s optional
GREAT VIDEO THANKS YOU GOODNESS 🌟 DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜 AWESOME
Just use a spray on a clear coat after applying the stencil will do the same thing. Or paint on mat medium.
Thanks for the tip!
Great video! I went to your post to try to find what you prepped with, but there’s so much information there I got completely confused and lost.
Just FYI, it would be great if you spoke during your video what you were using, so we don’t have to spend twice as long trying to weed through your posts. Don’t get me wrong, I love your work, but your post is very confusing and very long. Plus, I still was not able to find what I was looking for.
Hi Edie, My posts are long because my readers like details. Sorry you found it confusing. I used a clear coat (Varathane Waterbased Poly) to fill in big cracks and this is an optional step.
What is the purpose of the Modge Podge
Good question. It helps to get in the crack between the surface and the stencil so that paint cannot seep through. If the modge podge seeps through, it's fine because it's clear. I hope this helps. Thanks Michelle!
Karin Peters thank you.
Should the mod pod get be dry before you stencil?
What do you prep the wood with??
Amanda Booher It’s a clear coat to fill any large cracks and is optional. You can read more in the post. Thanks so much!
Why use mod podge?
Great question. It gets between the wood and stencil to keep paint from seeping underneath. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Beginner here. Can you use regular acrylic paint. I have a lot of it.
Yes you can!
Why is there a need for an additional link? Why can't you just say in the video what you're using and why then link to the specific products in the description? That avoids an additional step and all the questions people would have.
I’m a blogger who happens to add supplemental videos. Sometimes details are hard to explain in a video.
I wish you said if it needs to dry; what u used for step 1 etc. makes video sort of useless. O disrespect, sorry if comes across harsh.
Sorry to hear that. The post has all the steps and sources. That’s why I say to refer to it for the products
Unfortunately most videos are like this. Not telling the products being used. Time to let dry. Otherwise it was good.
Would help if you narrated
1:48 Straight to step 1...
I'm not sure about your question but all the details can be found in the blog post. Thanks!
What was first brushed on product? Why modge podge craft product? How long do you let layers dry? How do you clean stencil?
This was a great story, not great tutorial.
All of your questions are answered in detail here: renovatedfaith.com/how-to-stencil-on-wood/
Too bad you didn’t narrate the steps. I still don’t understand the procedure
Hey Dennis, this post is an addition to the blog post. I'm a blogger who also puts videos on youtube so check the link in the description for a clear step-by-step guide.
