Thank you so much for making this video. I'm new to the Cricut/Silhouette world and I was trying to decypher between the vinyls and transfer sheets. I'm making slate signs so I really just need the transfer paper... This cleared it up for me without it being a lengthy video. Thank you so much! 😃

Yes! Finally found someone on here who uses the same machine I have... Lol mine is still in the box, I have no idea how to use it. Guess I'll be binge watching your videos!
Yay, welcome! I have a ton of Silhouette videos and blog posts and I seriously use it all the time. I hope you get it out of the box and start playing around with it. You'll love it!!
@@SarahVanderkooy I'm so excited to see how to actually use it. I've been setting my craft room up and I'm almost ready to get to work. Thank you for posting videos! I'll definitely be binge-watching you're videos.
hi dont want to be a kiljoy but at 9:48 you can see lots of bleeding on the white lettering.the reason for this is the sponge brush.use a good quality medium bristle brush for great results.
Great video! Which method do you prefer most? We're struggling with getting the lines as clean as we want, and whether we pull the stencil up completely wet or completely dry it pulls up paint. How have you avoided this?
My go to method is vinyl, the other 2 work well but I tend to gravitate toward vinyl the most. Make sure your stain is completely dry first, then transfer the stencil and press really well to get any gaps out. Use just a little paint at a time to build up the color. I like to pull up the stencil while the paint is still wet, if it dries completely you risk peeling the paint off. Good luck!
I typically don't get residue on my wood, but it does happen from time to time. Wait until everything dries then use a little warm water on a soft cloth. The spray should dissolve and not hurt the paint.
Hi Sarah. I followed your instructions for the 1st way to stencil to the letter... It bled so bad I don't know what to do! Maybe I didn't blot it enough? Of course my friend and brother says it looks good, but for me, I can tell and I want it to look good for my wife... Should I sand it off and re-stain and maybe try it slowly with a small brush? From afar it looks good, but up close, yuk!! It's a meditation table, so it will be seen up close. Any help is greatly appreciated.
So sorry this happened. Some bleeding can happy and I know what you mean, you're always hardest on yourself. My biggest suggestion would be to use very little paint. Less than you think you need. You can go back with a second coat if needed. This should help prevent bleeding. Best of luck.
Love Love looks great. I am new to your Vlog. Would it be possible for you to put a list together of what we would need to start this type of project x Happy new year x Also ths Software and Machine you have on ths Table x .
Hi, I have a question about the basting spray. I'm stenciling on to stained wood. Is there any clean up at all or does it come right off? i've read that it needs to be washed out of fabric when using it in sewing so I have to be sure it;s not going to leave a stain or anything. By the way, I like your video and the music! Thanks!
I have not had issues with residue. However, if you do have any left over on your board you can wipe it away with a wet cloth. That shouldn't damage the stain. Thanks for watching!
I find that sometimes after I have painted over a vinyl stencil, the paint tends to lift off of the wood. No bleeding issues at all but the letters come off. Any ideas on why this happens and how to prevent it?
Be sure to pull the stencil of while the paint is still wet, if you wait until it's dry it will peel like this that's happened to me! If you peel when it's still wet and the paint still comes off that means it's not sticking to your stain. Be sure your stain is completely dry before stenciling.
It can work on paper stencils, but use very little. If you use too much, there will be paper residue left on the wood. I am not able to reuse the paper stencil after using basting spray.
I'm sorry you are having that problem. If you do have residue you can use a damp cloth to dissolve it away once everything on your sign is completely dry. I try to use very little spray and keep the bottle a distance from the stencil to hopefully avoid any build up. Hope that helps, best of luck.
For the reusable stencil I just use warm water and sometimes soap depending on the type of paint. The adhesive is water based so it washes off easily too.
Sarah Vanderkooy thank you, I use the same adhesive on your link and I notice that it leaves some white spots. I painted my canvas with black paint, idk if that's normal or I did something wrong
I haven't had that issue, but I tend to use lighter color stain and paint so there may be a residue that I just can't see. Thanks for sharing your experience.
No it is not. If you are going to seal the sign I would do it after you are completely done with your stencil. If you leave your sign indoors sealing isn't really necessary.
Nice video, I printed out on my printer certain phrases that id like to see on glass. I do not like the stencil from Joann's or Michaels or Hobby Lobby because they don't have the words, the size nor the font I like. Hence why I found you. I will be looking at your video about making money with this because I think with practice, practice, practice I will be the guru of stencil in my state. So thanks so much, great video.
Hi Patty, the tools i use are Silhouette tools to pull out the pieces of stencil. I think there are 3 shown in this video, a pick tool a scraper and a pick me up tool. They help to pull up stencils, weed vinyl or push down vinyl. You could also use the tools to scrape away a bit of dried paint if needed. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.
Hi there. Great video! I have a question about the Silhouette Cameo machine that you posted the link to on Amazon. I am also only interested in the reusable, first method that you explained about. Yes you can cut stencils with a Silhouette Cameo - this video talks about that a little more in depth ua-cam.com/video/EjbKyi_N-bo/v-deo.html
This video was very helpful, thank you! The music made it difficult at times to hear you.
How do you remove the spray from the stencil if you are re-using it?
Wash it with soap and water and lay or hang it to try. The spary is water based so it cleans up nicely.

@@SarahVanderkooy How do you clean the glue off of the stencil?
Where do you purchase the Stencil Maker? I could not find a link.
When you use permanent vinyl as a stencil is it difficult to remove the vinyl after you paint?
I would opt for non-permenant vinyl to be safe, or a vinyl you are familiar with that you know pulls off well.
@@SarahVanderkooy I thought you said you used 651 which is permanent - that's why I asked.
How do you get rid of the spray adesif on the stencil? Ive tried many ways and its still sticky
I am able to clean it with soap and warm water. There is still a bit of residue but the stickiness goes away. Maybe try soaking the stencil.
What kind of brush did you use?
Also, I didn't find the music distracting at all!
I use a sponge brush to apply the paint. Thanks for you kind comment!
Does this require sanding after it's dry?
No it does not.
I find that sometimes after I have painted over a vinyl stencil, the paint tends to lift off of the wood. No bleeding issues at all but the letters come off. Any ideas on why this happens and how to prevent it?

What are your measurements for the wood and lettering please.

Yes you can. I personally do not and my signs, that are inside, have held up really well.

Oil based stain for this particular sign, but you can use either for this technique.

@@SarahVanderkooy Thank you for replying. Have a great day!
love this. but have to agree that you don't need the music. it's too distracting.
Do you remove stencils while the paint is still wet or do you allow them to dry completely before removing?
I remove the stencil while the paint is still wet, if you wait until it dries you run the risk of chipping or peeling the paint around the stencil.
How do you get your stencils to line up straight on your signs my fear is there going to be crooked
This is tough, I spend a lot of time lining them up. I eye the placement first, then use a ruler to make sure there is equal space on all sides.
Didn't notice the music being too loud until I read the comments, then it was all I could think about...
Too funny lol
