The sheer amount of bleeps when your chain kept slipping was hilarious
It was like a morse code message!
glad you got some joy out of my pain 😅
@@BCpov Good old UA-cam schadenfreude. Glad you enjoy the bike :) Definitely some places to save money on bike specific tools (PVC pipes!) .... but other places where even a cheap $10-20 chain press (for example) will save a lot of heartache and grief.
Looking forward to seeing you getting back to riding to your full potential and posting amazing clips constantly. You're an amazing and talented person Eric and I can't wait to see what you do with your freedom. Let's get back to all those BC trails and blow minds with what we have in our backyard, the mecca.
I was feelin’ ya, Eric. Up until the bottom bracket, cassette and chain install….i’m sure Yuka was saying “sketchy” the whole time 😂
Kudos for showing us the issue with the chain! I messed up a bunch of good functional chains in my teens using hammer/punch and bought my first entry level chain tool :) Master links now are a blessing!
The star nut install is genius... I'm doing that for my next start nut install.
lol the tire race is always hilarious 🤣🤣 pls make it a ritual
Reminds me of Sam Pilgrim's way of working on bikes.
He is another level. He needs just curb and hammer :D
The crownrace hack is really good, thanks for the tips eric 👍
I'm glad you made it a point to show the process and poor result of the chain breaking part.
Honestly, I agree most riders don't need a bunch of tools at home, but I think most should have a decent multitool to take on rides. And most multitools come with a chain break.
This is hilarious😂
I know you did this to be entertaining, but for anyone else working on their own bike, buying a few bike specific specialty tools isn't that expensive compared to your bike and is very worth it in the long run.
Was that a snippet of "I'm so awkward" playing in the background? Good vid, beautiful bike! Thanks 😊
I always think expensive reliable tools are great for bike shops like park tool ones but if you are only doing these jobs a couple times then a Chinese aliexpress tool will do the job 99 percent as well. You also can get some tools from home depot to do a lot of these jobs as well. Like the bearing press can be made cheaply as well.
That crank looked sooo nice!
I remember using a nail as a chainbreaker in my childhood, as there were no chainbreaker tool or punches to get where I lived :D
Chain was probably simpler, as it wasnt that hard and never had any problems with them.
Just hammer on the floor, tables are way too wobbly for hammering
Brian cringing when you installed the headset cups.
This is a thoroughly entertaining video! One of my favorites of yours so far! As a terrible mechanic, I like seeing the easy ways to do good things with great gear! Have fun on that beauty!
Glad it was helpful!
The thing is, you kinda need to be a really good mechanic to get away with that kind of tools and kludges.
Very interesting and entertaining. But I'm at least buying a cheap chain tool! 😂
hold the fork in the air by the crown next time :D
Spectacular build! i was waiting for this. video, although it's a Real shame to use those centerline rotors on those Trickstuffs, a crime
the starnut trick is nice
I’ve used both an expensive crown race tool, and a PVC pipe with a cap on the end. I prefer the PVC pipe. Because it’s nice and soft so there’s no chance of marking up the crown races
I may have OCD (so this concept hurt me), but that was a banger video 😁
Hot DAYUM! Shedding 40'llbs period, is impressive, but since the start of the year is amazing. Good for you. 👊
I notice you mentioned the pedalling innovations pedals which I've been strongly considering because the logic behind them makes so much sense. Have you been using his workout program as well?
I bought the 40+ one and plan to start once I've finished the program that I'm doing right now.
Cheers for sharing your time. 👏👊✌
Oh... The hammer is my favorite bicycle tool. It always works.
i have used that same trick with the star nut on every one of my bikes
Brian is a great addition to the Okanagan bike shop choices. Fun vid too.
Totally agree! I popped in last year before a ride in the Smith Creek area. The guys at the shop were great.
New bike is 🔥
Please, do a comparison, Forbidden Dreadnaught vs Deviate. I would love to know which jumps better, which hugs the ground better...
This bike is awesome. Love the idea of building it with this concept ! Btw every time i see you upload I rush to youtube haha
🤤 that bike is beautiful
The finished product looks an awesome bike but now I have them I think I'll stick to using my specialist tools😄 Looking forward to hearing your opinions on the new brakes.
I have the same bike and love it, so far😅.
Those cranks...wow..
Bikes like this are why I always have bike envy. Purrrrrrrrdy
Seth from Berm Peak should see this. He is doing similar series about ghetto tools
He was skeptical at the start but had fun with it at the end
Saiko!🙆♂️👍
Oh man. I had to do a trail side chain repair once and my chain skipped, broke and wrapped my derailleur up into my spokes
Digging the 11 speed! I myself have had zero issues with my XTR XX1 11 speed system over 5 years. Can't say the same with my AXS or Eagle.
Hard to move away from it!
Do you prefer the deviate or the forbidden you had
Never thought I’d see two grown men fighting so aggressively to inflate a tire but I’m here for it 😂
my method for the headset is similar but I put it into the freezer first to cause it shrink a little so it goes in even easier :)
good trick!
I learned that i should probably just bring my bike in to the shop for maintenance, but in the event of an apocalypse i should break into to the shop and use their tools
Bike looks great! Why don't you rock AXS derailleur?
I’m a luddite! To be honest, i don’t want to think about charging batteries etc. i do that enough with all my camera gear. 🙂
When it come to tools they matter but they matter for how much you use them. For someone to build one new bike it should be fine. When I rebuilt my bike that I got. I had to buy a cheap cassette and crank puller mainly because of the age. I think I spend about $40cad for the tools to do it myself. The one thing I would tell people to invest in tools are Allen keys.
Eric, what are you thoughts on Sram Transmission. Just wondering why you did not want it?
I'm not so into the whole changing battery thing. Still running 11 speed!
I saved my $$$ for the brakes and suspension :)
It's amazing what we used to do back in the day compared to the tools available today. I'm curious how you used to remove pressed in cranks 🤣 For me, a hammer was 50% of the solution
Press in cranks are pretty dated these days.. I think my first mtb did have them and I'm pretty sure I had a cheap crank puller for that..
At some point, I'd be really interested in your thoughts on your new cranks and brakes.
Honestly, the cranks are just cranks. I don't notice any performance upgrade other than weight. The idea is that they're a long term investment that will move from bike to bike.
As for the brakes, they are very good. Very light touch. Almost to powerful.. i often grabbed too much brake in my first weeks/months of using them.
Those Knipex parallel jaw pliers aren't cheap. I've seen then at Canadian Tire, so I guess that counts as tools you can get in the hardware store.
Cheap pipe pliers would also would have worked better than those paralels :)
LMAO great video!
I've actually got the most basic tools ever, tho things for headset, cranks etc there can be picked up for like £7 off ebay so makes sense, i will always make sure the trusty mallet is within reach tho 💪 some tools are so stupidly over priced and if you actually think about it there's always a clever work around, like using the stem to fit a star nut, can save yourself hundreds so can grab that new expensive helmet, makes sense to me 👌
New bike day : ) I wonder if Yuka isn't too far behind? Has she come to appreciate the Commencal more? Too big?
I’ve been in a similar situation trying to install a new star nut somewhere away from my proper tools using the stem is great but the spacer work even better?
Any whistler vids coming put soon?
A bike co-op usually has all these tools and they let you use it for free or at the very least a small free(like $10, which the one I've been too costs to work at for the night).
Could have solved the chain tool issue by following Deviates recommendation of using the standard 126 link chain. Nice build too, but because of you, I got my Highlander, do I need to get a Highlander II now as well?
That's up to you! Both bikes a great. No reason to upgrade if you're happy with your bike :)
@@BCpov I’m definitely happy with my current setup. No reason to upgrade, other than keeping up with others. Looking forward to seeing more of this build.
What’s up with the rubber around your chainstay, would love to know here you got it
I believe that is mastic tape Brian had laying around the shop. On my highlander 1 I got a bunch of chain slap on the seat stay, so thought I'd put that there.
Awesome video
Now, I know it's not a tutorial, but was there any grease applied, like to the headset?! Super cool video! 😅
Definitely :) .. I think you can probably see some red stuff getting squished out in the video
@@BCpov I did see the grease, but, real question: are you supposed to grease for the crown race, or not? I've never done that part.
@@Happy_Biker we did, and it's probably a good idea to prevent creaks.
I have done it dry in the past though.
パワフルで良いと思います。
ただミスってフレーム割ったりすること考えると慣れてない人は絶対マネしないようにして欲しい。
I'm only at the stem part, but... why?
Park Tools aint gonna like this!! 😅 (You could get sponsorship from them next time 😅) P.S. Your bike seems a lot nicer (and much more $$) than Yuka's!! 🤘🏼👊🏼
My father showed me how to shorten the chain very easily without a chain tool fifty years ago
I try to d a lot of my own bike maintenance. But there are certain thinks (forks, shocks) that scare me…
Amazing.
a special part of this video needs pointed out, 60ml Is more than enough when using stans as it doesnt stick to the tyre like muc off does.
If you blow a tyre off, 60 or 1000mls wont make a damn of a difference.
but then I've got no argument on who won.
@@smithcreekcycle I think Eric got ya sorry 😁
Sram Centerline Rotors 🙈 - you‘ve reduced the performance of the Trickstuff Maxima by almost 70 % 😂
are you back in BC eric?
You're not in Guatemala now Dr Ropata 🤨
Get the tools *_first._* Then you get the bike. Just like you purchase riding gear first as well.
I mean all this works but you NEED. A bike multi tool when you ride so please just get a cheap bike multi tool with a chain break built into it.
Hi Eric, i moved to Bc a few months ago, I’ve always wanted to help you out with jumping, let me know if you’re interested.
Just messing with the algorithms ;-))
If ya can't afford to buy the tools, ya can't afford to build your own bike. Damaging an expensive part is way more expensive than buying the correct tools.
I hate working on a bike with the wrong tools
The 34 Dislikes are just Brians other Accounts as he suffered so much from shooting this video
11:16 what she said.. or you said to her? 🤔
1000th view
I cringed, well done.
It’s not that expensive to have a shop build a bike. When assembling an expensive bike I want things done right. Regular maintenance I do myself.
the tool wall is sad, to much empty space :/
🤷
Nice bike but not nice enough to jump a shark.
this is unwatchable xD
btw a lot of these tools are available at much cheaper prices. U mostly showed expensive tools for repeated use by professionals, like bike shop mechanics. However, there are cheaper alternatives, like a simple headset press for around 30€ (by Acros), or a generic aluminium pipe cutter from the hardware store for around 15€. Unior offers a lot of specialized bike tools at somewhat cheap prices, at least in Europe.
This hurts to watch
bikes are too expensive
Ok you used the most basic tools but those being Park Tool is complete nonsense. Noone is going to start out with very few very high quality tools. Most people buy cheap toolkits first then upgrade one by one. The cheap tools don't perform well when doing jobs they're not specifically designed for. It was entertaining anyway.
