i've been on the fence about getting one of these guys, but that story about the cabinet reminded me of a post i saw on reddit about one of these where someone bought it for their office thinking it was a fake plant. So no one touched it....until it sprouted a new leaf lol Also! I just want to say thank you for always going into so much detail about the root systems of the plants you talk about! it has REALLY changed my plant parent skills for the better :)
I appreciate this video. Though I am starting to like the look of ZZs, I am again reminded why this would not be a good plant for me. I do best with more fussy plants and ones that need more regular watering to support their growth. THIS...I would sooo over-love/water. Also why I can't do succulents at home, only in the office where I can forget about them.
I love my ZZ. I've killed two due to over watering. This is why I have saved this video to rewatch from time to time. I've been good about letting the soil dry out, but needed a reminder to let the rhizomes dry out too.
I have all of my ZZs (raven, chameleon & regular) in my south window Everyone is doing awesome. I only water once a month-they’re all in 6-8” pots. The Zenzi is in a 4” pot under a grow light. I think I rotted her by over watering. I need to put her in the window with her big sisters!
If you decide to propagate by cutting a stalk; Swedish Plantguys say that the particular stalk you cut it from, will not continue to grow and produce "more" leaves. It will remain that length. So, they suggested cutting closer to the soil if you don't want a stalk only half the size of the other stalks. (Not sure if that made sense. I know what I was trying to say, but you're absolutely correct...in SLOW propagating. I've had one stalk that took a whole year before it was ready to plant with it's little baby tuber. 😉🌱
Thank you for the amazing videos! I made the mistake to put my ZZ in front of bright direct light south--facing window and some leaves got yellow and dropped (no overwatering). Luckily I realised the issue was probably light before losing all leaves🙏
Hi..I have killed too many zz plants but I am determined to have them in my collection. I’m like one of the other commenters…I’m too fussy and I overwatered them. So I have a zenzi that everytime I go to water I walk past it…it’s sprouting new leaves!! One of the other green zz I almost killed but was able to root from put in a pons mixture which drains instantly.. it seems to be doing okay. That might be my only way to have these plants in my collection
My zz is 4 years old and stands at around 4ft tall and 3ft wids, she is huge, I'd love to post a picture, but don't think I can on here. Love your channel and all the very helpful information on rare plants.... Thank you 🙏
I propagated two leaves with a sponge and water and both have roots and it’s been about 3 weeks! I wish I could put a picture of it in here and I am doing one in soil on a heat mat and that has rooted !
I love your videos! Just wanted to say that you mentioned ZZ plants have rhizomes that produce tubers but the way I understand it is that ZZ plants have tuberous rhizomes which are not separate things, such as a tuber and a rhizome. The potato-like things on ZZ plants aren't tubers. They are rhizomes. Unless I am confused...
I have a separate video all about it💚: Rhizomes, Corms, Tubers, and Bulbs, Oh My! | Learn the Difference | Plant Nerd Series Episode 2 ua-cam.com/video/YwtNCQnmUpk/v-deo.html
I literally come to your channel or The Swedish Plant Guys to really learn and understand about plants I recently got, interested in getting, or have and want more info on. Thank you so much for the long form, informative and entertaining videos! And it was The Swedish Plant Guys that did that to the ZZ on accident. They said the leaves were very light, white, but it did well after that, too. I am behaving a tan brown, like leather color looking zz cutting. It’s looking dead on top but the bulb thing is growing fat and lots of roots. I’m hoping the leaves come back. What type of ZZ is that? I could only find a color like it in the variegated form, which I did not know existed and I so want 10 of them now. Oh and what about the giant form of it? I’m wanting the compact one and let it sit in a darker area and stretch a tiny bit to look more like a small form reg ZZ
Great video! I have been wanting a ZZ Raven for months! When I ordered a Calathea Stella from an Etsy shop, the seller included a free ZZ Raven leaf cutting. It took a month for it to develop roots longer than 1". I potted it up in a 2 1/2" terra cotta pot using your succulent mix, put it in a bright area, and it's just sitting there. Thank you for the advice about leaf cuttings. I will be patient! Could you do a video on fertilizing, please? Thank you!
Great video! I propped 1 srem & 2 leaf cuttings, all have roots within 3 months, yay. I my so excited, now i have a ZZ(or 3) Should i leave them in water for much longer? When i put in soil, is it generally 1 plant per pot or can i put them all in the same pot? Thanks.
I killed my first one, because I tried to divide it up and I overwatered all the cuttings. Slowly they all perished one by one, but I have a new one, as I've a darker corner where I placed it under a grow light. It's doing ok - I haven't watered it yet and I've had it almost a month... I also wonder if I should be calling it a Zed Zed as I'm in the UK ! 🌿
Can you do a video about the differences between syngoniums and nephthytis? I'm seeing tags identifying plants as both. How can that be? Does the grower not know? Thanks!! LOVE your channel.
Nephthytis is one of the common names for Syngonium along with arrowhead plant, arrowhead vine, arrowhead philodendron, goosefoot, African evergreen, and American evergreen. That’s why you’re seeing that.
Thanks for responding! I did a little more searching and found this in Wikipedia. Thought I'd share as it's pretty interesting. "An unrelated American species, Syngonium podophyllum, commonly grown as a houseplant, was originally confused with the similar-looking Nephthytis. It still retains Nephthytis as a common name, though it was given its own genus in 1879"@@AlohaPlantLife
Wait what are tubers? The thick part of the stems that are above the soil? Towards the bottom? Or the bulb underneath the soil? The stem above the soil is wrinkled for me. And im concerned. I love my plant. And i don’t know what to do or what you mean Edit: i see you showed tubers as the bulb underneath. I cant see those. But the stem the stalky part of my ZZ is wrinkly. What does that mean?
My Raven ZZ looks much like yours, with the bottom of the stems not having leaves. Is there a way to "push" the leaves to grow on the bottom of the stem?
What kind of light do you have it in? My best guess is that giving it more light would help the new branches emerge with more leaves on them, but once they’ve emerged they won’t get more leaves down low
My zz plant has been thriving for a year, but recently its new shoots have started turning yellow and withering. I tried searching on Google but couldn’t pinpoint whether it’s an issue with watering or lighting.
Commenting because I want to see the answer to this. I am growing a ZZ from cuttings so I still have 2 small stems with leaves in a yogurt container. Lol. (Oh lord, are they sloooowwww to grow)
Curious question:if i cut the stem in half n leave the other half potion in the pot will the stem itself will dry out or it will remain fresh jst 1/2,sorry i cannt explain this any simpler way 😂😅
I'm new to the plant community, but I've watched a lot of videos, cand yellow leaves could mean under or over watering. It could also mean you need to check your plant for pests. Plant could also need more light or humidity too. I hope this helps. You can always watch UA-cam videos to learn what could be wrong.😊
You might find this video helpful. It’s timestamped in the description of the video if you want to jump to the part on yellow leaves first: Master the Language of Houseplant Leaves: Learn What They're Trying To Tell You ua-cam.com/video/R_dtVbFdv-w/v-deo.html
You can see them in lots of my videos. Plant chore ones for sure. Sometimes I just use clear cups or other containers as pots and just add drainage holes to the bottom of them.

I got mine on clearance, and grabbed 3 pots. I’m beginning to love these crazy guys. I haven’t had to repot yet, but they are going nuts slowly.
Wow I didn't know they get that big 🌵🌹

can you divide a single tuber to propagate zz plant?
Do you take out all tubers when changing pots?
I personally don’t
Wait what are tubers? The thick part of the stems that are above the soil? Towards the bottom?

It will likely dry out
If they are baby tubers can you remove or leave till they turn brown
I would probably wait until they’re more established💚
