Your dedication to bring information to the houseplant community is unrivaled. Most don't even do short term updates on propagation, you take a year to do it. Thank you
I love how even after a year you are equally, if not more in love and excited over the zz raven!! Thank you so much for this video. I received a zz raven recently that arrived with the stalks snapped D: ! I'm hoping I can salvage what I can while referencing your videos ^^ !!
Here in Phoenix, AZ USA, my stem cuttings grew a new bulb in water in 2 months in indirect highlight under a grow bulb. I’ve heard leaf cuttings take up to a year! I moved mine from water to a closed glass container that was moist and it was doing so well!! I’ve moved it from that to a mix of Aeroid mix with some orchid soil mix and they are doing so well! The pot is terracotta indoors. They’re with my tropicals side of the house so lots of light and humidity and they seem super happy. I’m moving them to a higher light area to regain the darkness of the leaves. Again, make sure you are taking YOUR region and growing climate into consideration when applying info from sources.
Wow! Video tracking progressive over 1 year. That’s really commitment. Regarding the patent- its my understanding that you can separate the plant but not propagate (from cuttings or otherwise). Patents can be country specific or international and there are ways to enforce - prohibiting sales for example. This might be a good Q&A video if you know of an attorney who would be will to discuss the subject.
That's exactly what happened to mine, came to find out how to propagate cause all the bulbs melted away and the stems started getting mushy, thanks again for these informative videos on caring for all sort of plants! I just got my first raven and I don't want to lose it!
I bought my Raven because I liked the name. Being from Baltimore, I am a Ravens fan, and as I am into music, I like ZZ Top. Also, I have a brown thumb which, because of its hardiness, makes this plant perfect for me.
Both my regular green and raven ZZ's did so much better once I cut down their watering to just once a month, on the 1st of each month. The Raven in low light does fine but the one in brighter light is definitely larger even though I bought them at the same time.
I admire how passionate and dedicated sean is in all of his videos! ❤️🔥 So much fun to see all of the progress! And andd i remmber nick pileggi always said to never water ur zz plant more than u pay ur houserent 😅😂
Such wonderful science content! The fact that you go through the whole process over time is fantastic. I started watching plant videos on YT to see this process, but mostly just ran into people showing bits and pieces and then never going through to show how things really work ( or don’t work 😁 ) You are a very good plant hero among humans.
They used to be so difficult to find here in Lagos Nigeria and very expensive but now in the past couple of months , I’ve come across some more affordable ones and now own a full pot 😊. So happy . But yeah it’s one slow growing plant.
I do much better with fast draining soil in plastic pots with much less watering than clay. I also found the cuttings will usually root and grow the best when I put them in a large pot that contains a big healthy plant with lots of roots through the soil. Ive actually found this to be the best way FOR ME to root almost all my cuttings and really it’s the best way to grow many hard to grow plants. The big plant controls the soil moisture and health, when it’s 1 cutting in 1 pot then most of that soil can only be controlled by watering it. It just works better for me and honestly it mimics nature. Most small cacti and succulents grow under nursery trees for many years, haworthia grow in tangles of thorns etc. I even have agave growing in pots with bananas. They love it! They get loads of sun, they dry out every day but get water almost every day. Fastest growing agave I have and in potbound musa.
I bought mine in the Us. I was concerned why my zz plant was dark green almost black and not like the others until I saw your video. My zz plant is in my office a very strong, beautiful and growing plant love it. Thank you
I truly love watching your videos! If only you lived closer… :) I acquired a zz Raven bulb about a month ago. It grew two leaves super fast and hasn’t grown since. Now just waiting.
Glad yours without leaves or dying leaves still produced new ones! I had four leaves that rooted but two of the leaves are withered and I potted them anyways in hope it would still work so fingers crossed!
here in switzerland they're uncommon, but not that expensive. i managed to get my hands on one for 8 swiss franks, which is about seven euros, and because the plant i bought was under grow lights and got a bit burnt, the person who sold it gave me a maaaassive cutting for free that now lives in leca and is doing better than the original plant i bought haha.
For my slow growing plants I use gibberellic acid. It's a growth hormone found naturally in plants. It really! Promotes growth in propagations and young plants.
Love the video. Only thing is you can get zz to flower. My normal zz plant flowered last summer. It was so small and inconspicuous that I almost missed it but they do indeed flower if their happy
Another great vid needed this video as I have nearly killed my raven, too much water, not enough I don't know what I am doing wrong, nice to see how you have managed yours so well 😊
Hi Sean, thanks for all your videos...zz plants are under estimated i think, but they are easy, nice looking. I loved them. I think i have one in every room at home. I tryed to propagate them....not a big success for now but i still tried 😄. Hopefully they not expensive here in France....thanks again..🌵🌼🌸🌺
Thank you for this video! I just got my first ZZ Black Raven 🖤and it’s gorgeous but I’m afraid I will over water it too. Also, I’m going to try to propagate it using damp New Zealand Moss. Love your video!!🌱💚
I Loved this video💚. I have killed my share of these beautiful plants. My dream is to own one day a huge pot like a 9 gallon i want it to be mixed with green and the back version🥰
Thank you for putting out great content!! Lounge your effort and geniuneness ! I want to propagate do you suggest stem cuttings or should I go for leaf cuttings
I think i was meant to study the difference in speed but forgot in the video lol. Theoretically a main stem should not only root faster, but will grow bigger bulbs and branches faster. But with single leaves you can get more babies 😀
Oh wow I just googled up the chameleon and apparently I have one. I think it might have been from a propagated variegated plant that I owned 2 years ago as Ive not purchased the chameleon before.
I have mine in a store-bought succulent potting mix to avoid root rot since Im also a serial overwaterer 😁 I think it’s doing well, 2 new stalks and 1 on the way, after more than a year 🤣
Hi what is the correct time or season to propagate these? I have a raven zz that I got a year ago and its stopped growing after giving just one new stem. I feel like it needs some kind of change in life so I am thinking about cutting it up for propagation but again I am scared what if it doesn't work. It was kind of expensive and I am not in a position to buy a brand new zz raven if this one gets killed in the process but I just love this plant so much and want lots of it. Please help 🥺
It takes a year or so to propagate it so I dont think it matters when its propagated. You do need to give the cuttings excellent light though. Their natural humidity is actually not high so I dont think the low winter humidity will affect it too much
May I ask , I bought a black raven , it’s small but it’s 10months old. It’s not fully black like yours , there’s a green mix with dark on its leaves , why is not fully black
Maybe a good title would be: How to kill plants through ambitious propagation. Ive done it so many times… with so many plants… so please don’t feel bad when I tell you that I was watching the old footage and kept saying things like “bro no what are you doing” Lol. No hate at all, these are lessons we all need to learn
RAVEN is a trademarked name and not a cultivar or variety. The cultivar name is 'Dowon'. It is also patented in the US so propagating it for commercial use is prohibited.
I grabbed an over watered one from Walmart for $20 with a nice pot included. Some stems just fell right off from rot. But I love the look of it and couldn't leave it there to die 😅
I have the green form and the Raven they both grow super slow for me. But my mom had the Raven behind her tv she forgets about it and some how that plant has tripled in size in less than a year. I don't get it 🤯🤯

Yaaassss, even regular ZZ took a year for me to see them grow from single leaf. And how satisfied when to see them all survive. Congratulations, Sean.

13 minutes and 47 seconds long, but never a dull moment with you, Sean! Very, very cute. Showing love from the Philippines.

Nick is the reason I water mine only once a month. My ZZ's are happier thanks to him.
Haha I have an uncontrollable impulse to water everything everyday 😅
We LOVE YOU SEAN 😘💕
@@onlyplants so do I! The amount of house plants I have root rotted in my life is staggering😩 and, what’s worse is… I just keep doing it!☹️

Great tip. Maybe the soil PH and ecosystem is more stable or established with the parent plant.
Ohhh Geeesh...got this raven, free from my ex collage and I saw this video.... Dang.. Jackpot!!! Thanks 💋💋💋
Handsome guy talking about the plants. Love it!

If they have a bulb and some roots it should still sprout 😀
Smile in your video... Because your smile transfers us to heaven even if it's just for a little while 🙃💨😇👏👏👏👏 GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS 💨🙏

Thank you for putting so much thought and info in your video
And time 🤗
Interesting that the ZZ plant likes full sun. Mine are so slow growing so I'll move them to a brighter spot. Thanks for the advice, Sean
Slowly move it to more light and not suddenly ya. Plants need time to adapt to this change
perfect timing, I just got my raven zz last week! yours look adorable
Thank you for this video Sean. I have a little bulb propagating right now 😊
Great video! Thank you for sharing! Love your plant collection 🌱
Thanks for taking so much time to make this video complete. I love when the updates are shown.

Haha i overwatered many of them actually. I may end up with more plants if only I could hold back watering

Give them very bright light. They grow much faster and is more tolerant to overwatering when you give it loads of light.
So very interesting as always, thank you!
Thnx for this. I was wondering why I only have 1 little bulb left After my propegationadventure. Now i know: too Much love (water)

great work. love your passion. you are watering a lot ! and your soil is not well drained.
Soil is some of the fastest draining i know but im a chronic over waterer lol. I hose down my plants 1-2 times a day but at least once
very good job for this big vidéo !
I love my ZZs: regular ZZ, raven, and chameleon.

My raven zz split is nursery pot so I will repot it. Should I split it since I have to repot it? Happy New Year.
You can keep it together in one clump they do look nice. But if you want multiple pots its fine to separate it
Aha green first then turns black 😊 I thought it was 2 plants in one pot.
Thank you for your help 🥰
🙏🏽🙏🏽
I have mine in a store-bought succulent potting mix to avoid root rot since Im also a serial overwaterer 😁 I think it’s doing well, 2 new stalks and 1 on the way, after more than a year 🤣
Mine used to do very well in terracotta pot, until I moved it to a plastic pot and rotted. Managed to save the bulb, still leafless tho :(
The ZZ Raven was actually discovered by a grower in South Korea
Wooo I thought they are a cultivar developed in tissue culture 🙈
Great job :)
Wow, what a long time to grow yes?
Haha yes… they are the slowest things!
I love zz plant🌿😚
Can you share which cuttings did the best and why?
I cant remember 😅 but my feeling is soil propagation is faster, especially with a top cutting of 2 leaves.

Lol this is a plant channel and you are forgetting plants and letting them dry and overwatering plants. I guess I appreciate the honesty
Haha I show you guys not only how to care for them, but how to kill them too 😅😅
Nice
Q- Will you be doing a video on the zenzi version of this plant?
Haha maybe. I have a pot of babies now actually cuz I propagated them at the same time

I have a question about the one you cut up at the end. Is that the one that started out green?
Yeppp
Yay!!!❤
❤️🙌🏽
Do they like traditional "aroid chunky mix"???
Actually I find them handy with a more succulent/cactus potting mix. But aroid mix is ok too. They really need to dry out fast between watering.
💚💚
You should checkout philodendron rio if it’s available to you
I have lots of cream splash and they are actually the same mutation 😀
RAVEN is a trademarked name and not a cultivar or variety. The cultivar name is 'Dowon'. It is also patented in the US so propagating it for commercial use is prohibited.
Whoaaaa this is a very interesting fact!
Why did you use the terra-cotta pots?
To dry them out faster, since I water them almost daily

Ive done it with a few plants but they are combined with propagation. The ficus elastica episode is one.
😍😍😍

How quickly they went from expensive to over abundant. Our big box stores now sell giant plants for $15.

The heat from TV provides a temperature range between 18°C and 26°C (65° to 79°F) ideal for increased leaf production.

Yep I show in the video some cuttings propagated in water 😀
would you sell the cuttings?
I already sold some but have since closed down my shop
i begged my neighbor to give me leaf cuttings and i got 2 with rhizomes alredy
