Thank you so much! I've always been a plant saver, but it is great to know what to do in all conditions. Your tips for touchy, sensitive green babies has saved me lots of money.
Good morning Mr Sheffield!!! I purchased John the ZZ about 4 years ago and his pot was breaking so the store had him on sale for $5.00 US. I repotted John in a chunky mix and treat him like a potato... water maybe once a month in spring/summer. In the fall I reduce watering to every 6-8 weeks. John seems to be loving life, and he sits in front of an East facing sliding glass.
I got a zz plant as one of my first plants in the beginning of this year because I was told it could not be killed. Turns out it actually was pretty easy to kill or at least severley injure it. 🤷🏼♀️ This is how it went down: I repotted it straight away after getting it because I wanted to give it space to grow bigger. *classic* It was fine for quite some time, but this summer I was leaving with kids and dogs to go to a four day reggae festival that was like a 6 hour drive away. Was in a bit of a hurry the morning of the trip and tried to give each of my plants the proper care to survive until I came home. My kids and dogs were literally waiting in the car while I was doing this, so I was a bit stressed to say the least. I noticed my zz-plant had started to turn very brown and yellow so I made a quick decision of repotting it to a smaller pot with a more well drained mix. Then we left for the festival (it was awesome by the way). When I came home the plant was absolutely a disaster. It was just bad all over. It felt like such a betrayal and I was totally fed up with it. So I grabbed it and literally threw it out on my balcony to die. It just layed there for several days enduring all types of weather conditions (I live in Sweden). Then after a while I started feeling a bit regretful. So I took it in again to try to save it. Threw away the bad parts, propagated the parts that was somewhat still OK in water. And now I have actually been able to place some of them in soil and they seem to be doing okay. This plant parent life is too freaking dramatic, I can't take it. 😂
I've repotted my ZZ plants a couple of times. Once a couple months after I got them, and again a couple of months ago. I divided them to give to students at a local college. When I originally repotted them I accidentally broke off a few stems. Instead of throwing them out I put them in soil (in separate pots), gave them an occasional drink, and pretty much left them alone. After about a 1.5 months I checked them, and was surprised to see a rhizome forming on each of them. Sadly, earlier this year the original cuttings started dying. The last one died just a few weeks ago, but had already put out 2 new stems. There wasn't a visible plant in 2 pots for months. I checked the rhizomes, and both looked healthy so I stuck them back. FINALLY as of yesterday all of them now have new stems!
I got mine spring if last year. Wound up with root rot when I repotted him from the mother plant. I had one squishy, poor, mistreated rhizome. I stuck him in clean water and tryied to keep an eye on him. The rhizome swelled and turned over the course of at least a year. A week ago I look at him and BOOM 3-4 leaves! The little guy finally broke the surface of the water!
I repotted my zz after having for 3 years. Went up in pot size and it's now growing again. It had not grown any in over a year until I re potted my zz plant
I repotted mine when it cracked the concrete pot it was in and roots were growing out of the hole. I went up 2 inch pot and used a cactus, palm and citrus potting mix.
I made the repotting mistake with my ZZ plant. Months later I wondered why it stopped growing and some stems died. I had a look, and the rhizomes were rotting, together with any pathetic and small roots it had. Obviously it didn't like being repotted, and into a far too large pot. So I repotted it back into a smaller pot, into very chunky mixture where it is still today, and it's growing again and seems happy. Requires very little watering, so I often just forget about it. It seems to like that far better than being constantly attended to. And by the way, I just bought a selection of Sansi lights due to your recommendation, and they are superb! Thank you! :)
I repotted my zz not long after I got it because it didnt fit in the pot I bought along with it online 😅 just the next size up. It was also circling a lot at the base though, like level 2. luckily it worked out fine and even had some new stems grow later on!
Interestingly, ZZ Plants are still under the Araceae family, the ones colloquially known as "aroids" (the more well-known Pothos and Philodendron plants are also under this family). :P I have a baby ZZ Raven that I've potted in a similar chunky aroid mix, and so far so good. Four new shoots after months of inactivity!
Indeed! So ZZ plants are in fact aroids! It becomes obvious once they flower: they have the same spathe/spadix inflorescence structure as all other aroids!
@SheffieldMadePlants I keep buying small plants or cuttings on eBay ( most died) been to b&q today and saw many big plants for the same price I paid for one leaf or uprooted cutting. Do you think I shouldn't bother buying cutting ?
my house plants were so fussy about water and soil that I straight up plopped their root in my goldfish tank. Peace Lily, Monstera Adansonii and Syngonium White Butterfly all three have been doing really well, shooting out new leaves and roots
I keep exotics, so I use play sand. I keep coir because I have a frog. But I tend to stay away for it for 98% of my plants. I just use more or less sand depending on which. My ZZ has plenty of light.. but she is so heavy she's drooping. I'm having to provide support. I love your videos! They've helped so much.
I have an ZZ Plant as many Years, he "eats" the soil over time, than I give him fresh Soil, he's doing well, I water him just every three Day's when the Soil is complete dry, when he get to big, I put one ore two Rhizoms in another Pot...🌿💚👍
I just repotted my ZZ a few days ago, before this video came out. I actually downsized my pot because there hadn’t been any growth, just death. I used the coco coir mix you’d been “ bleating on about” and I have faith in positive results going forward! I’m also giving her more light where she can see the sky. Any plant would be happier in that situation, right? 😊
Have to say I've never heard of this plant. There is a potato leaf plant that is decorative for outside flower pots when cleaning up in the fall there were a lot of little potatoes in the pot, I don't think they are edible but really cool.
I think it’s important to not repot your zz too early, but there does come a time when it needs a bigger pot. My 3 year old zz cracked the planter. After you repot use your moisture meter and make sure it’s bone dry before watering. So far my zz is doing great and even popped out a flower this spring.
This subject to talk about rise zones reminds me of my question to you about the whole Foxtail subject that I asked you a while back because they also have Verizon zones. Apparently, I looked into it a little bit more and apparently I made the same mistake. Multiple times the only time they made the mistake was when I left the plant sit in the same hard clay pot for 10 years
when I bought my zz-raven the nursery pot was totally triangular :D I did repot it, but the new pot wasn´t really mutch bigger, I mainly did it to get it into a black nursery pot, matching the black ceramic pot and the black foliage. I even thought about covering the soil with black lava, but didn´t end up doing it, it just has a big mainly black crystal on top in the front. I have it for about 2 year low, it lost 1-2 tiny stalks and grew about 3-4 big new ones in that time. Can´t remember what the soil mix was I used, but probably potting with some stuff mixed in, I always use what I have at hand (perlite, pon, leka, bark, coarse sand) and do reuse potting soil/mixes if they look good and the old plant was healthy. BUT I stopped probing the soil with a wooden chopstick, which is my go to method, because I´m scared to stab the potato, I´m pretty sure I did it once.
Made the mistake of planting one directly into a glazed round pot that looks great but makes it impossible to check the roots well. Thank goodness for mister pokey-stick! Been 3 years!

She definitely did not mind me to take her out of the original pot. Did I mention she got a much bigger pot as well? 🤣😇😁😊
I just got a tiny baby zz raven. It’s in one of those tiny pots for baby cactus. There is one new shoot currently growing. What to do? When to repot? There are about 4 shoots 6 inches tall

I let any sit for as long as 2 hours in a peroxide water bath depending on the severity of the rot. For a zz, let it dry for 24 hours then repot to the teeny pot.
I might get a variegated ZZ plant. Does anyone know where I could get one in the EU? Google isn't showing much. I don't think there a pink variegation which I would prefer.
Did you do a video about plant placement and decorating with plants in your new house? I can't afford Patreon so you might've done it there. Would love to see how moving was even if it's just you talking about how you decided on a home, of you culled any plants, which plants acted a fool with the change, which did great etc. I'm in Canada and it's been so grey here this fall and i swear my plants are living off Sansi 😬🤔 Assuming you're still in Sheffield or that area the window placements and outside as far as trees or other buildings would be nice to know if you considered that or if you just looked for a house that you liked and would fit the family and your plants (work) and if you just went with knowing you can use grow lights.
@@SheffieldMadePlants oh good! I thought I missed a video! I know this one was in the "old house" but also I know that creators often reuse clips and/or have a lot pre-recorded! 💞
This is not my experience. ZZs are almost indestructible. I have repotted ZZs into pots much too large many times before. Just don’t water until they are dry, which can take 1-2 months…which is a great thing in my book.
These plants are not beginner friendly, I have a nice long leggy raven, hasn’t grown since I bought it home almost 6 months ago. He has a thick stem and is about a foot and a half long, but has done nothing! He has light he’s not rotten. No pests
Good videos, but your ads are terrible, somehow u manage to incorporate every single one of them (sponsors, your products, amazon links, etc.) to every video. Honestly its ruining the videos with ur great punch lines and tips. The ads are still the same for years and its just annoying to a degree where I would rather watch video of lesser production value but without all this crap. BR

I wonder if I put it in a pot too big. Maybe I should put it down
I might get a variegated ZZ plant.
Has he moved yet? This video is still the house he's been in
That'll be coming soon
@@SheffieldMadePlants oh good! I thought I missed a video! I know this one was in the "old house" but also I know that creators often reuse clips and/or have a lot pre-recorded! 💞
I repotted my ZZ about 12 hours ago. :I
Edit they’re tightly packed though
Mine is called "Sherman".
well shit i just repotted my zz into a bigger pot with a sanaveria lolol he will hate me now........
I literally repotted it 2 days ago and it is dying now and I see this film just today, ughhh
My z z broke the pot so an emergency repot was in order.
My Raven ZZ doesn't seem to grow as quickly as my green ones... They all love being ignored
Good day Mr Sheffield how are You todday sire ?
Gabriel Titus G 🕊🤝
Very good. You?
Yes i am good thanks🤝 @@SheffieldMadePlants
I bought a ZZZ plant and it says on the label it is illegal to Propagate.
Must have a patent on it
I can't figure out ZZ plant. My other plants are thriving and ZZ is dying. I just don't understand.
This is not my experience. ZZs are almost indestructible. I have repotted ZZs into pots much too large many times before. Just don’t water until they are dry, which can take 1-2 months…which is a great thing in my book.
Verstehe ich dad richtig? Es ist falsch die Pflanze umzutoofen, nur weil sie dann größer wird?
Im Allgemeinen ist dieser Effekt doch gewollt.
I'll just repot and not water it for a month or two. I want to divide one into 2 for gifts.
Frank is Gorgeous 😻
"I'm having no problem fingering him" hahaha never heard that in the plant world before 😅
Hah! Same! He said it with a straight face too😁
@camillabergstrm7982 he has good humour 🤣
😁
Zz plant is Aroid tho
🤗🌱🌿🤗
These plants are not beginner friendly, I have a nice long leggy raven, hasn’t grown since I bought it home almost 6 months ago. He has a thick stem and is about a foot and a half long, but has done nothing! He has light he’s not rotten. No pests
They are very slow
They are really nice plants but a no no where you have pets, it’s toxic.

You know that your pronunciation of his name is questionable smh
Good videos, but your ads are terrible, somehow u manage to incorporate every single one of them (sponsors, your products, amazon links, etc.) to every video. Honestly its ruining the videos with ur great punch lines and tips. The ads are still the same for years and its just annoying to a degree where I would rather watch video of lesser production value but without all this crap. BR
Anyone would think he was trying to earn a wage like the rest of us.
Why is anyone even on free UA-cam anymore?? Just pay for ads free or watch with ads and don't complain.
If you are watching on android i would suggest UA-cam vanced or similar apps.
@petrac2840 this is what I do. Best 13 quid I spent each month
Plenty of great plant content out there to enjoy
