I rescued one from walmart years ago, nearly dead severed root rot etc etc. I did a lot of research and found that if you cut the stalk from the rhizome to discard the Ryzhome. some of them were joined together but some still looked healthy. I did need to cut the plants from these and propagate or they would have died due to the stalk growing from the rotted parts. I cut the parts of the ryzhomes that were un healthy and cut the stalks to propogate. Despite what I saw online I placed them in soil with no stalks just to see what happened. Covered the soil and watered much like how you would start a seed and just a few short months later several new stalks emerged. Im not sure why most sources online say to discard and say they will not regrow from them. I have successfully done this with little effort from a 1$ clearance walmart plant and have provided hundreds of rooted propagations to family friends, and even schools.
Also took just a single leaf form the zz as it fell off the plant and have read many times online that it would root but not grow a full stalk as the leaf would not be able to produce this. Did not see differently online. Odd because I did have success with this as well, a ryzhome formed and stalk grew from this. Point being, nature is wonderful and to read several sources until you can find one or two trustable sources to get consistent information from. This channel is one of the trustable places for information. 💓💗💖
I’ve never been a fan of the ZZ, but I love to experiment, so I “borrowed” a few leaves from a plant at work. Nine months later, I have a small ZZ plant. It was really fascinating to watch the roots form in water then I was so amazed when I saw the first shoot poke through the soil. Pretty hard not to like something that you managed to grow from 2 leaves. Thanks for sharing your tips, AllisonLP
I love my zz. I've had it for years. It came from wilko. Rip wilko. Then a friend bought me one so added it to mine. And now have a huge huge plant. I hqve found its grown well and mine is in good light . It was because of your videos I decided I didn't want a raven zz as I love the lime green new leaves and the black mature leaves. Just do not like the middle stage. So I'm very grateful for that. Zz plants are so lovely. And look at mine everyday it's makes me smile every time Great vid
Perfect timing! My ZZ had a bit of a struggle Fall-Winter and a bunch of stems went yellow (seemed like a combo of being potbound/little soil left and build up of salts(?) in the soil. Got it repotted and halted the downward spiral, but was only left with 5 stems of a once very-full plant. I thought about putting it down into a much smaller pot now, but then noticed that it has five new growth points! I still would like to separate it out into two smaller plants. I’m going to let these new stalks grow a bit, and then will repot in early spring. So this video is very helpful! P.S. Anyone struggling with fungus gnats, watch Ashley’s video on fungus gnat tea. It works like a charm! I actually do it with the mosquito dunks that I steep in a large pitcher of hot water for two hours to overnight. And then I water with that. I haven’t had a fungus gnat problem in years, thanks to Ashley’s tips!
I love your videos it's funny how root bound plants look so much bigger when you repot them I didn't know how to start them from leaves now I'll try that thanks for the informative video
I got my first (and only) ZZ two years ago at... Kroger. (lol) During October. (spooky season) Obviously, it was a Raven ZZ. It was $12 and in an impressive 6" pot with lots of sprouts. Within three weeks, almost all the sprouts DIED. Wilted and shriveled up. We suspected root rot. I kind of ignored it for several months. There were like... two sprouts left, with only like two leaves each, and I watered it occasionally out of guilt. And then April rolled around. BOOM. It shot up like 8 stems. They are "slow growing" because they seem to sprout like once a year, but damn do those sprouts grow FAST. My raven ZZ shot up more roots this past spring, and they're at that fascinating partial-black stage and also like twice the height of the old sprouts. I love her
ZZ Zenzi is my favourite also my Raven one. They are very slow growers. I repot mine when it starts to stretch everywhere and i repot it back compact. Also i notice the thin roots went all brown and soft. I think the roots can get damaged too from under water too. Which i was watering once a month now i water every 2 - 3 weeks. And can see the potato part goes wrinkled i think another sign of dehydration.
Enjoyed your video….ive been trying to root my zz cuttings from stem for about 2 mos now…they have some roots but no rhizome as someone else said they should have before potting. Should i wait for that or plant now?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge about the ZZ plant. How do you use potho plants or leaves to help with the propagation? Thank you in advance for your help.
This info was so good!!💚 I just saw a VARIGATED RAVEN ZZ plant on Onlyplants channel!!!🤩 He went to the Bangkok International Exotic Trade Show. Just about every plant was varigated. I'm not a huge fan of all plants being varigated but some of those (like the begonias, jewel orchids and homalomenas) were gorgeous!👌🏽
Can you share the link to that video? I want to see this var raven zz!! :D but onlyplants has so many videos I wouldn't know which one there :( plssss thx
I had to repot mine. It was extremely rootbound. The roots are so big though! It wasnt doing well. I know have only 3 stalks in a big pot now because of the huge roots lol. What should i do? I hate the look of 3 little stalks 😅
Hi I love your videos you are very knowledgeable. I am a more outside person..I love 🌻 But I have so many questions omg. The plant game has changed Omg...I have learned so much from you.!! I don't remember alot of names but I took pic of what they are. I am not on social media platforms but this one. I wonder how to reach you!!!✌🏾❤️🌻
Hi Ashley, great video, thanks for sharing. Had one raven zz, Los it, so looking for another one. How often do you water them? What is the soil mixture containing? 😊
I just bought a ZZ plant for the first time , the next morning I was shock to see the leaves no longer wide open not sure what to do I was told to put it on shady area ,can I put it by the window to have some light not even sure when to water it please help
Great video. I was wondering if you can answer a question though. I've seen conflicting things, how do you keep the Raven ZZ at its blackest? Does it get more black in bright light or low light? Any other stuff that makes it blacker? I really like the stark black of the leaves and want it to look its best.
It gets more raven in bright light. In bright light the transition from lime green to raven is also faster. I use a grow light over the winter and my raven and other ZZ are still pushing out new growth. Hope this helps.
can you also prop a ZZ plant by the stem? Or will it only root by cutting the leaves like you showed? Thanks for another great plant care vid and kisses to Claire-bear!
The stems can grow roots, then rhizomes. To speed the process, change your water at least once a week. They'll continue to develop in water or, you can plant them in soil. Currently, my newly rooted starts with rhizomes are also sending up baby stalks! I'm going to keep them in water as it's so interesting to see the plant's development. Good luck!
@PolishedSiren Hi, glad my zz tips were helpful 🤗 One thing I forgot to mention: when you root your slip, be sure its not jammed against the container but angled in so roots have room to grow. Sometimes I have to make a little wire armature to support them properly. I had a tough cookie that wouldn't root, the stem kept getting mushy. Fortunately, it was rather long, so I just kept cutting it and keeping it propped up with lots of space. Then I learned that trick about keeping the water fresh... it grew roots & rhizomes really fast. My zz's are mostly rescued from big box stores that neglect them. Amazing how well they bounce back🤩
My zz is almost dead I had 5-6 stalks and im down to 1 im not sure why I only water it 1-2 times a month and the soil is always dry. But that 1 stalkis still holding on strong
I was just gonna ask could you talk about calathea and the different types of problems a plant person could haveshould the soil stay moist or damp all the time or should you let it completley dry out between waterings ,and thanks for your incentive plant series love to watch your shopping vids also ,we don't seem to have the selection of plants in ontario canada as you have in your big box stores hoping to hear from you soon
I haven’t done a video about calathea yet, but they have very different needs than zz plant. Calathea need high humidity and water when soil is about halfway dry
Omg I need to water mine more often I usually go like a month before I water 😳😢 I hope it doesn’t die. It has several shots going sideways but I have watered another plant to much and lost like 4 due to root rot (not ZZ’s) so I’m so sparring with the water. 😮

Wonderful!
That's great! I've had mine for 3 1/2 years and noticed 2 flower blooms growing, I had no idea it blooms too 👍.

Ashley, I find your videos very interesting. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks for watching!
Completely new with this plant, learnt a lot today. Thank you for making this video.
You got it! Glad to help!
Can you pot a Raven along with a regular ZZ? I like the contrast and wondering if that would work - assuming they have similar water requirements.
Really appreciate and loved this video. Thank you for all the tips!

Thanks for the video. Super helpful! Also, your dog looks really sweet.
I loved the visitor.I have one of the dark ones on ZZ and it has not grown one bit. Maybe this summer. I have only had it 7 months.
Beautiful zz plant!
When bottom watering, do you allow the plant to absorb all the water? How long do you leave the pot in the tray with the water?
I started to collect ZZ's. I am looking to get the dwarf one next. Ashley, your pup is cute. :)
Thanks!
Wonderful explanation! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge about the ZZ plant. How do you use potho plants or leaves to help with the propagation? Thank you in advance for your help.
Just a cutting of pothos in the water will help 🪴
New subscriber here. Love watching your channel for tips and care recommendations for my plants!
Where do you get most of your ZZ’s? 😃
Ashley, why didn’t you cut off all the previous cut stems without leaves while repotting?

Great question! Mine is in medium light and is pretty dark.
I have the green, the raven the chameleon and the zenzii. Still would like the variegated.
All great zz plants!
