One of the best youtube channels for plant care! Easy going, straightforward, no gimmicks, no babbling. Thanks keep up the good work! As a new plant parent myself watching your videos made me much more confident in plant maintenance!
Hi Swedish Plant Guy! ;-) This was very helpful! I have 7 ZZ plants, 3 Raven and 4 regular green, and I LOVE them! They are one of my favorite plants! You do a phenomenal job of explaining everything without all the "fluff", and I really appreciate that. Thank you so much for sharing this detailed information!
I can’t believe that I have watched the full video from start to finish. Now I have quite of knowledge regarding ZZ Plant. I just have brought this plant to home, and will start taking care of it with this amazing tips. 😊
Thank you for this video!! I was gifted a ZZ plant and had taken it to the office knowing my new cat would try to eat it and get sick. Everyone just loves this plant, I was hoping to be able to propagate this easily, I’m thankful for all of your information to care for it as I am asked questions about it daily!
I plead guilty to breaking rule 15. About a month ago I got a little one in a 4 inch pot that was absolutely bulging in it's plastic pot, it was like the hulk. I gave it a week to acclimate to it's new home and then cut it out. I divided into 4! making sure that each part got some roots and rhizome. It's a few weeks later and they are all doing fine and growing. One of them due to my transplant had a stem almost horizontal, out of interest I put it under some lights and was surprised at how sharply the stem bent up to the light, only took a week. Thank you so much for such a comprehensive review. I knew they didn't need much water, but learned from you they need even less than I thought! Only question I have is though you talked about watering frequency, how thoroughly should I water? Since most of my plants are near electricity I take them down from their shelves and put them in big pans and totally soak them, allowing them to sit in water for 20 minutes. I'm guessing this would be too much for them? Thanks!
I have had a zz Raven about two years now and I only see it grow in the summer when I put it outside. I purchased my first ZZ plant from Etsy and I am thrilled. It was so root bound, I thought I would have to cut the pot. It was so bound I was afraid to seperate it so I loosened the soil, and gave it a nice fresh, nutritious bed of media to live in for a long time.
I bought that ZZ plant for my daughter and after listening to him explain how they like to be compacted and tight fitting in its pot, we decided to leave it alone. It is receiving indirect Southern light from a downstairs bathroom. I had her set a watering schedule and yesterday when I visited it has grown shoots and new leaves are emerging. It no longer appears as if the rhizomes are pushing the plant out of its pot. Her Jade plant that I propagated for her is growing well this time also. It’s nice to have a low maintenance plant or two.
Outstanding video.I have a zz plant that is over 4 years old.I now understand this plant and how to care more properly han I have been.I have been using stakes to hold it upright. Now I know I can safely trim.Glad to have come upon your channel and look forward to more info on plants.
You are so good and caring in sharing zz plant education. I wish my zz plant can be just as beautiful as yours. Incredible display you have. Thank you!
I love my ZZs, I have a regular and a Raven. The Reg I saw in a stare and liked it right away. But I actually got one after I found a video you made about careing for them. Since then I managed to get two new plants from leaves, following your instructions. It took about 7-months but now they both have grown new stems and are 6-8 inches tall, so far. The Raven I got 5-6 months ago, on the way home a stem got damaged so I tried to get some of the leaves to grow, they rotted and died. The original pot they were in split and I had to re-pot, while doing so I found two small tubers, only one had a stem, in amungst some of the soil that came off . I potted them separately. There are now new stems just showing above the soil. Like I said I love these ZZs and I love your videos just as much. Thank you.
Thank you so MUCH...what a great presentation. Informative & useful information!! I've been pretty lucky with my last ZZ...my biggest mistake was transferring my first one into a larger pot!!! It is VERY sparse, BUT, still alive!!!😅 I'm going to "try" to repot in a smaller pot and give it another chance 😁
This is so good! I bought a ZZ on a whim, great price. Looks like I did a good job picking it out. This video will hopefully keep on track caring for it. Thanks for the great info!
This is so helpful! I have many ZZ plants because my lighting is not optimal for plants needing more light. I have been wondering why a couple have long stems and wondering what to do. Thankfully I know now that it’s normal and will try to propagate more plants with your awesome instructions. Thank you!!!
This was some excellent information!. The tips given are very simple yet practical regarding the care of the plant. This is the only plant in my house as it doesn't require much care and it suits my busy lifestyle. Awesome presentation!!
Thank you for the detailed video 🙂I have ZZ Zenzi and had a lot of spidermites on it at once - he got it from his neighbour. Later on my ZZ got thrips from another plant. However, I treated him regularly and he hasn´t lost a single leaf, and only got small cosmetic damage on some leaves. Very hardy and pretty plant indeed 🙂
This is the best info for my new ZZ plant purchased 5/13/23. As of 5/26/23, I have 4 shoots growing beautifully. Sooo excited. I'll also be viewing the Sansaveria guide. I have 3 in 4inch nursery pots. Thank you for all you do
Thank you!! My ZZ plant went dormant and I thought I did something wrong. It wasn't dying but it wasn't growing.. just healthy and stagnant. Because of this video, I know to have patience because she is sleeping ❤
Thank you very much. This is a great teaching video, my plants are much happier now that I have found and use your videos, Keep up the great work,. Happy New years to all of you. God bless you all.
I watched your video about Hoya. It was a good video for starter to know about Hoya. By any chance you can talk more details about how to grow Hoya? Thanks
Thank you so much for this extremely informative and entertaining video!!! I have actually seen these vertical lines on my stems and thought. "Oh good. I am not overwatering!" Eek. Lesson learned. Thank you so much💚Happy holidays to you and your family🎄🥰
#1 key to be successful with this plant is to always remember, Just because the soil is dry doesn’t mean the plant is thirsty. They store water in their stems and the bulb that is beneath the soil. When the leaves start to look pale and if the stems start to droop a bit, that indicates the plant is need of water. You could easily kill this plant by overwatering before you know it the stems will rot and it will continue like that unless you move quickly and remove it from the soil and save the stems that haven’t started to rot and put them in dry soil for at least 2 weeks before watering.
Awesome video. Thank you! I learned so much about this plant I have at home, and it is growing super wide out of control. I didn’t know that I can actually move it outside, I am definitely going to do that
I absolutely love your channel! I just found it today looking for propagating my Schefflera & BAM! there you were lol .. Thank you so much for explaining everything and also for my ZZ Plant which I am in Iowa & it's sprouting 2 new stalks (can't remember what you called them) but thanks to you I didn't repot yet. It is about 4 yrs old & in the same pot when I bought & bulging so I figure I will get a new pot just a tad bigger & repot it next year... THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for this video, i leant a lot and finally it put away the stress i had because i haven't seen any new growth for almost a year now and i thought i did something wrong. i live in Greece as it concerns the climate and we have a looooot of hot days during summer and generally most of the year :/ a small proposal here... if you could make a video like this about sansevieria. Thank you in advance and happy festive holidays, Evelyn :)
unfortunately I cant give 100 thumbs up once. Thanks for this effort . I consider this chanl as an encyclopedia keep the good work ..please do a vedio for pachira plant . Regards
Hello: Plantguy. Your video was extremely educational for this ZZ plant newbie. I received it as a gift, so it is valuable to me. Question: Had thus plant for 2 years now, but the leave are on the small side. I did transfer it up to pot side bigger. (Western Canada) Looking forward to your advice. Thank you
Thank you again for the super detailed video! Like you said: all that I needed to know about the ZZ!❤ I had a question: is the tuber just a container of food or can I expect leaves from a bare tuber?
My humble opinion and experience says that you need to water it thoroughly. Most of us make the same mistake when we hear that zz doesn't need much water. So, yes: it doesn't have to be watered like other plants (for example, every week or two weekes) but instead monthly or even 1,5 months but it has to be thoroughly then! I think this mistake killed all my new shoots on two zz. They had even 7-8 but every one of them died slowly, drying out from tips. Plus, we had very dry summer. Now, I'm trying this approach with less but thorough watering as I think this mimics the natural conditions in which this plant lives.
Thanks, this exactly answered the question I asked earlier. I generally water my plants less often but thoroughly by putting them in a big pan, watering from the top and letting them sit in the runoff for 15 minutes. From the description in the video I wondered whether that would be too much for the zz's, but sounds from your comments it will be ok. And to only have to water them every 1-1.5 months is ideal.
Thanks for the awesome content! I've watched almost all your videos and they are so helpful! Would you consider making an all you need to know video about polyscias fabians? I'm having some trouble with pale speckling on the leaves. It doesn't seem to be pests and I can't figure out what it is. Thanks again!
Great video and informative. Just bought a smaller one, got it home and found it to be too wet, bulging in the pot . I've taken it out and placed newspaper around it to dry it somewhat and noticed the plant is rootbound. Normally, I would not repot it so soon, but should I repot given the above information. Please advise.
I learned today AFTER repotting zz is actually an AROID 😮 Good thing I used homemade aroid mix... I did use a pot pot, several sizes larger but I used styrofoam in the bottom which I do frequently when I size up like that. Would love to do straight pumice but you can't find it anywhere in bulk amounts for a good price :(
This video was so very helpful. I wish I found it earlier. I’m currently growing a ZZ plant in leca. It’s surviving but I don’t see a lot of growth. I killed a raven but I want to get another and grow in soil.
I've been bottom watering all my plants for months and months. And since you're reading... the roots definitely become healthier, stronger and longer. But what now lol that they are all coming out the drainage holes...mostly my Aglaonemas. The plants are still putting out tons of new growth! Do I repot or eek..just trim the roots??? These are some beautiful roots. Bottom watering- love what it's done for my plants.
In Austria it's called "glücksfeder" - lucky feather.. I don't know who classified this plant as an "easy" one.. 7 cut stems without leaves, one lucky stem with leaves still... She might come back, hopefully your tips will touch this issue 🍀
