Or “Shark studies have even found that touching a shark’s snout can cause it to halt mid-motion and not attack. The reason could be the tiny electrical receptors called ampullae of Lorenzini that speckle the area around sharks’ noses and mouths.”

As tempting petting is, use your eyes. Fear of humans keeps animals safer from us. Plus a lot of these pettable creatures will bite your fingers off :-)
Isn't it a blessing that we humans, who has been given hands to pet others, live on a planet full of creatures that loves to be petted?
Sure, but humans needlessly torture and macerate trillions of innocent animals to eat flesh and dairy products on a daily basis....

Ah - interesting! :O
Maybe, they are sensitive to electromagnetic fields. They also have an amazing sense of smell under water though. They can smell blood up to a quarter of a mile away. More likely his scent molecules.
Its also interesting that they arent attracted to human blood that much since our blood is different than fish blood and since they dont get attracted that much. They do go the blood but they dont attack immediately they observe the taste or smell and they realise that its not tasty they let go. Well...Cat owner...Tiger Shark...and all
I remember hearing that sharks have an amazing sense of smell, so it's probably that she recognizes his scent. Unfortunately sharks have gotten a bad rap so up until now people haven't really tried to get close enough to know them. But as with any wild animal, it's all about trust on both sides. Emma is personal with him because she knows she can let her guard down and trust him not to hurt her.
Sharks also have a sixth sense, electrical receptors in their nose. It allows them to pick up on the small electrical signals that an animal’s body gives off. In our case that could be something like when the muscles around our hearts contract to pump blood. My guess is these electrical signals could vary slightly between individuals and that plays a big role in how she’s able to identify people without visual differences.

well it's true, sharks have poor eyesight (they have an excellent nose instead they can smell blood from miles away) so if they see someone splashing around they think it's a fish and attack then after the bite they're like "yuck it's a human I'm out peace". They don't normally attack humans unless the human in question does something to attract the shark or do something stupid to enrage the shark. That's why when it's clear water like where this guy is they can differentiate humans and don't bother with attacking humans. BUT that doesn't mean it's safe in clear water :P IF a shark has never seen a human of course it's going to come to take a bite and see what this thing is.

I like the dynamic. He is showing people that sharks are affectionate, gentle (albeit clumsy) animals. You can see the other fish and sharks casually swimming near the divers. But also, I wonder if Emma’s bond shows the other sharks that they’re safe with him.
Here's a little secret: When a predatory animal closes its eyes, it's a sign of trust and submissiveness. Emma closes her eyes around her friend not because she's afraid of getting poked in the eye, but because she trusts him. If you have cats like me, you start to notice these commonalities between species and their body language.
Humans do the same in the form of nodding and looking away. We establish familiarity with eye contact, but once you're best buds with someone or trust them, the conversation doesn't stay face to face.

IMO, Hollywood fucks just about everything as it plays on our natural emotions.
As an outdoorsman, Ihave no fear in the mountains, however others are still afraid of wolves and bears, its obscene.
@@SlayerofFiction it made people hate sharks it's ridiculous
@@crystalidentity thats not even all sharks. what you are talking about are great whites. Tiger sharks do not eat seals. regularly.
BUT: do not let your guard down too much. Certain species of shark WILL attack humans just to see if they are edible (Bull sharks for example are notoriously aggressive and if you spook them even a little they might lash out)
@@SlayerofFiction I don't fear wolves too much. Bears... I admit, I have a VERY healthy respect for bears. Sure, if they know you won't hurt them or theirs, they're about the same as any other animal, but that doesn't mean I want to snuggle with something that weighs 400-1,000 lbs and can hit like a truck. Nah, I'm good on that one. I know it's not likely that I'll make it think I'm a threat, but... I'd like to not take that chance. No thanks.
When we saw some wild sharks,
Us: scared...
Sharks: don't worry dude, the feeling is mutual.
"the same as your dog recognizing you. It's totally visual.". I'm not too sure about sharks but dogs recognize you 99% via scent. There are a million videos where the person returning after being away for a long time meets their dog and the dog is never 100% sure until it smells the person and then starts freaking out. I'd say that vision has very little to do with it; at first they think they recognize the voice and then smelling confirms it.
@Stephanie Maria makes sense. And apparently they have pretty damn good sense of smell, at least through water. I guess it would technically be taste and not smell? Smell does not require physical contact but I assume underwater it is physical contact via tastes moving though the water.
Our dog will bark and growl at us like crazy through the window when she can clearly see us. As soon as we're inside she recognizes us.

They are predators. What is so misjudging about a dangerous sea creature? Sharks are cool but you will never catch me petting a shark like it's a damn dog.
Well when u enter there ocean what do u expect I mean when your laying flat on a surface they are going to think your a sea turtle or seal or jelly fish

there’s only about 16 shark attacks every year and only 2 fatalities every 2 years.

Its great because this shows sharks can be grateful and can show some sort of affection. Sharks tend to mistake us as sea lions and seals as they tend to eat marine mammals and to see a human getting along with a shark just go to show sharks can be friendly if they have trust in you.
Friendly and Playful is never how’d I’d describe a shark.
I’m not crying, you are.

Shows, trust is built with patience and consistency and no expectations. So nice to see the respect this man has towards these animals.

the fact he gets to have that kind of interaction with a Tiger Shark is amazing
Makes friends with "the most aggressive shark breed" and proves we make up a lot of B.S. about animals
eyeroll:
Uh, no This 'proves' nothing. What it does, is it reinforce what we already know - that there is a great deal of potential variability in individual animal behavior, and that the occasional outlier always exists.
Don't kid yourself, tiger sharks continue to pose a threat to humans, no matter what this guy might tell you. The statistics are very clear on this
There are docile cobras, too.. but you'd be a damn fool to walk up to one and try to make friends with it.

Honestly, this comment has scores of upvotes? My god, but people are daft.. always ready to believe a happy lie.
Ever notice how dangerous wolves can be? Ever wonder where golden retrievers came from? Guess what - people came across OUTLIER wolves that liked to socialize with humans, and they bred them.
You could possibly do the same with sharks, but that wouldn't mean that most are not still dangerous - just as are wolves to this very day.

0:02 okay, let’s be honest, this is the cutest look I’ve seen on a shark, I’m kind of scared of sharks but they are not so scary.
Haha cute Eyes just closing and opening
The movie JAWS started my fear of sharks. I am happy to see a different side to them. I need to reevaluate my thoughts about about sharks.. Thank you for this eye opening video.
you are a lucky one. i hate it when people dont do research.
Jaws is really unrealistic just by the fact that a shark would linger that much in one exact place. They obviously strike once and then leave. They mostly hate the taste of human flesh so if they taste it they will not do it again.
I saw Jaws when it was in theaters. Scarred me for life.
That movie fueled so much fear that it actually started the Wipeout of sharks
Sorry if this is annoying, but I ADORE sharks, and I thought you might like to know some things!
Sharks are pretty much what this guy described - they're water puppies! They actually enjoy being booped and pet on the snoot, because it feels really good to them (like a dog would enjoy a scratch behind the ears). ALSO! Sharks don't just bite something to EAT it - unlike other ocean creatures, their bodies don't really bend or curl that much, and their fins have very limited motion. So if they see something interesting and want to check it out, the only real way many types of sharks have is to grab the interesting thing in their mouth! That way, they can feel what it is, and often times they spit back out anything that isn't food that they may get a bite out of. That's why you'll hear stories of surfers who had a shark take a bite out of their board, but didn't keep attacking - the shark saw this weird thingy floating on the surface and went to check it out! They god a mouth full of wood, went "oh, okay, its an icky plank thing" and went on their way. To sharks (and to pretty much any ocean creature), we as humans are TERRIFYING. We're these big, loud, flailing LAND creatures that appear and disappear from the surface and make all sorts of ruckus. So most sharks, and many other creatures, actually PREFER to move AWAY from humans, because we're scary! Sharks like these, however, have usually been lured through snacks and such until they become comfortable with being in the same areas as these divers, usually so the divers can study them or help any injured sharks. And just like other wild animals, sharks often learn rather quickly when certain humans will help them when they're injured, and will come back to not only say thank you, but have been found to immediately go to the area where they interact with humans if they ever get hurt! Sharks that are regular visitors to these dive groups have been known to go straight to the dive spot if they get hooks stuck in them, a cut, etc, because they know the humans will help them. They will even gladly sit still and even let their trusted divers do things like reach into their mouths without biting down or let them dig their fingers into an obviously painful wound to get a hook out without attacking, because they know the person is gonna make it better! And lately, we've even discovered that great white sharks are actually far smarter than we thought- they have an entire system of communication through body language! They can even show dominance display as a sort of telling of their status, and males will often actually AVOID fights because they will adhere to that display - whoever ranks higher in that display will be the winner of sorts, and they will respect that and move on without altercation! They have a VAST range of bodily communication and it's FASCINATING! Sharks of all sizes (there are some that are very small, and that you wouldnt even realize was a shark!) Are honestly incredibly intelligent and fascinating, and they have never mindlessly attacked something. It's pretty much always just a shark trying to see what that weird thingy is, and when that weird thingy is a person, well...people don't do well with getting nibbled on by a shark, curious intent or not. So yes, sharks can look super scary, and just like any wild animal, they can be very dangerous! But, just like any wild animal, if you watch their body language and respect them, they're no more dangerous than anything else.
Sorry for the probably incoherent shark ramble, I'm just really tired and love sharks, haha!
