What a sweet, beautiful shark. I wish we would appreciate the animal world so much more rather than kill them right off the bat. It's one thing to have to kill an animal you come upon suddenly where you are forced to defend your life because the animal is trying to kill you. But are you aware there are CANNED ANIMAL HUNTS where fake men shoot trapped wild animals whose furs and heads, etc. they will take to a taxidermist to be stuffed so they can brag to their friends. Sometimes I think that such men have impulses to show off because they are afraid that their sexual parts are too small. Killing makes them feel more manly. (Watch the last quarter of the movie “The Misfits” with Marilyn Monroe. It delivers a powerful, insightful look at man’s relationship with animals. It's not your typical MM type movie; it depicts the ugly and ignorant side of the human race.) Right NOW, there are beautiful, powerful animals trapped in fake jungles, unaware they are about to be shot and killed for absolutely NO REASON. This is happening TODAY and every day in the USA. This is unconscionable; in the impoverished minds of these people, killing and being loud and obnoxious is cool. You see them every day. They play loud music and drive their neighbors crazy...they ride around on motorcycles with broken mufflers, they cut you off on the road and give you the finger. These ignorant people think they look cool. Instead, they look like morons.
@@barbaraenglish3983 I honestly thought I was alone. I've not seen anyone say anything positive about 'The Misfits'. I think she did a wonderful job with the character Rosalyn. Frankly her hatred of this character has baffled me for years. The world could stand have many more Rosalyns.
I have to say, there's something universal about head pats or petting on the head. Every animal I've seen enjoy it always have the same look in their eyes, they always close their eyes giving a happy look. So wholesome :D
I might be completely wrong but if remember correctly I believe there was a study confirming that getting rubbed on the head releases dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin, (or the "bonding hormone") in the brain responsible for emotions relating to comfort and safety, in the same way that eating releases chemicals responsible for calming us down, and sharks in particular are extremely sensitive to both of these chemical responses as well. TL:DR: headpats makes happy emotion go weeeee :>
I love how the other sharks totally behave when he's interacting with Emma. It's like she warned them before hand: "Look, Jim's coming over and I expect you to all be on your best behavior".
Fun fact: Sharks are known to have their own “social circles” with other specific sharks that they go hunting with, trust their pups with, and sometimes just swim and vibe with so I bet it was easy for Emma to let the others know “Hooman frien, not food.”
SHE BLINKS AT HIM!!!!! that is some of the biggest evidence of recognition and trust! Sharks do lid their eyes right before biting, but she is unbelievably docile and seeks out physical touch with the diver! That's the cutest thing I've ever seen. edit: okay. sure. Sharks don't communicate with their eyes. but its undeniable that she's looking to be pet with how she interacts with the researcher.
@@BobGymlan you close your eyes when you sneeze. But you might also close your eyes when you feel relaxed. There can be more than one reason why you can close your eyes, the same is true for other animals and likely true for sharks.
Not true. Sharks will close their eyes upon an inspection of a creature they are not familiar with. For the safety of their eyes. Please stop spreading misinformed lies to the world about sharks. It’s ppl like you who get sharks hunted and killed. Shame on you.
You might also close your eyes as an instinctual reflexive reaction to protect your eyes, which is exactly what sharks do, without thinking about it. It is the same as human eyes do. All they sense is something getting close to their eyes, hence protection. @@joekinnear4671
Yo! At like 3:00 min, Emma approaches him and his hand is down and he doesn’t even attempt to try to redirect her and she just comes up, not to investigate, but to be by him. The amount of trust both ways is just amazing. Awesome. And obviously she has to keep moving to breath. I wonder how she would like it if he swam next to her. I wonder if it it would be threatening or territorial behavior she would display or like “hey friend, let’s go for a walk”.
I heard on a trivia TV show that they're was a study showing people's reaction to videos of sharks was deeply impacted by the background music. As in, Jaws theme = audiences freak out. Cheerful music = not so much.
Why wouldn't it be? Animals are made of the same meat and blood and bones and nerves as we are, they feel the same things. If we like it, they probably do too. 🤷

What is crazy is that most human relationships don’t last that long. To have a bond with a great white shark for 20 years is amazing. A mental affectionate bond is there. No talking no nothing Priceless. Humans are the worst species on earth . Thank You for sharing 👍❤️
That's very true, I have a few friends who i know are genuinely good people, and we've been friends for almost 20 years. But animals know immediately who they can trust, and it's the best feeling to know you have an animal's seal of approval
I got a lump in my throat when he said they never received affection before. I never thought of it that way but it's true. Sharks immediately leave their mothers and live a very lonely life for 20-30 years or more. The idea that this shark was thinking about her friend while he was gone is touching.
I didn’t realize she was a Tiger Shark at first. Then when he said Tiger Shark halfway through the video that makes this an even more incredible story because I thought I once heard Tiger Sharks are the most aggressive shark there is. I wasn’t 100% sure but your comment confirms that. Thank you because you saved the time of having to look that up 😂
I feel like tiger sharks can be aggressive but also.. fish or sharks bite things cuz they are curious. Could have something to do with intelligence. Since they don’t have hands they try things with their mouth.
Old girl Emma can probably identify your specific heartbeat, she knows it is her favorite diver. Touching her head stimulates her electro-receptors, and it is like petting a mammal against the grain of their fur. She loves it and loves her diver. I am confident that so many more animals are able to have intelligence than we give them credit for.
@@BlanBonco Electric signature. That's how they identify prey. Most bites happen when humans are on surfboards because they look like seals but don't emit the same signature. The sharks get curious and take a bite to test.
My mom worked on Jim’s boat for years, I loved his Emma stories and photos as a kid. The last coverage of Emma I saw was of her getting harassed on a shark week show. So glad to see her still swimming
From what I gather, most sharks see humans as inedible and may very well flee from them if they know what they are (which I guess in all technicality is predators, as people do sometimes fish for sharks) and only might bite them thinking they're a more palatable animal like a seal or turtle. I guess Emma would be one of the few who says "Jim is a nice human, not a mindless eating machine."
I know, I have always dreamed of going somewhere tropical and swimming with sharks, as long as it's safe. I am terrified of scuba diving, but after watching this video.....maybe I'll consider it??
They're not being affectionate, that is anthropomorphizing. The shark is simply associating the human with pain going away, and an addictive drug-like high from the nose being rubbed. It's like letting your doctor treat you and give you drugs, that's not you being affectionate.
I remember hearing about Jim and Emma years back on a television show about people with exotic or unusual pets (Yes, I know Emma is not technically a pet, but that's beside the point). The fact that she recognizes him (even after being apart for over a year) and keeps coming back to Jim to get pets from him shows that she does love the attention he gives her. Sharks truly are intelligent and fascinating creatures.
I find it fascinating that she lives in the vastness of the ocean and sees thousands of creatures everyday, dozens of boats, and still remembers him. That's really something.
They love having their sensory system overloaded. Petting their heads and nose is like the best massage you have ever had. LOL What a gorgeous creature.

There is a lot of science that points to plants having societies, brains, emotions, etc... I guess we just have to wait for the proof now. There must be experiments ongoing as I write this. The Russians had a big interest in this. They even managed to use plants as some sort of sound recording device. We are just starting ton understand the planet. And we are gonna destroy it all before we do.
@@TheJimprez We are very good at destruction it seems. Re plants--I've heard that trees may have a "slow sentience" Wouldn't that be something. I'll have to investigate this
@@TheJimprez There is no science that shows that plants have a brain :) Brain is uniquely an animal feature. Plants do have sense of their surroundings though, and they are much more capable then we give them credit of course - so there's no need to animalise them. I would not say them having societies though, for it is also a loaded term and people would think that they have individuals who are communicating, but they are rather having the boundary between individual and communal not existing on the level that we, animals, do. No need to add fantasies to an already magical thing that is nature :)
Emotions precede sentience. Very likely every animal has emotions - they are extremely useful. All the bogus notion that insects/lobsters have no pain is not scientific and makes no sense evolutionary. Being able to do maths is very likely uniquely human as well as many other "intelligent" things, but feeling emotions and being able to relate is wide-spread in animals. It is not impossible that single celled animals feel something of that sorts. Though ofc having a brain helps with that a lot :)
What makes humans so unique is our ability to interact with animals. Provide affection and physical care for them. As a nurse I know how very real the power of touch is. Animals including fish can be very friendly with humans. I've seen divers with lovable moray eels. Imagine holding an eel and patting it like a dog?! So awesome I would be so excited.

The insane amount of trust these two have in each other. Its beautiful and breathtaking to see.
we really just have to relearn all the wrong things we've been taught. @@fennec13 you both are right. Some sharks do roll their eyes back like the great white for example. Others sharks like the bronze whaler shark for example have a membrane.
They also roll back when they bite. Sharks are not pets. They will eat you alive. This is cute but an extreme rarity. I can't believe these comments. So... sharks are just teddy bears on the inside and are just misunderstood? WOW.
I love that this doesn't just show that sharks are probably way more intelligent/curious than most people realize, but it also helps open up a lot of questions about sharks that could help us better understand/learn about them, like Jim does with Emma. Like, when sharks' olfactory nerves on their snoot get touched, does it give them a natural high, like seratonin and dopamine does for us? Can sharks be more social and loving than originally thought? Can they communicate with each other (except with electro-receptors, instead of echolocation like whales and cetaceans do)? There's so much we still need to learn about sharks, and tiger sharks like Emma could be one of our first steps in more shark conservationists befriending and learning about them.
The Dodo has also done a story on a woman who has also befriended sharks. She removes fishing hooks from them, and when she first started doing that, sharks that she didn't know started coming with fishing hooks stuck in their mouths too. So it was obvious that the first sharks had somehow communicated to other sharks that she could help them remove their hooks too. So that is definitely evidence of communication so complex that they know to go to her with that specific problem. Pretty awesome! This woman has removed over 300 hooks at the point the video was made.

I saw one video of them tearing apart a baby chimp and said NOPE. Whole Lotta nope there. And now I adore gorillas whom I was raised to think were awful brutal animals.
@@RebeccaStout well, chimps and bonobos are the best in example (I think) what happens when you prefer either female or male leaders. Chimps are ruled by one headchimp. They are strong and big and had to handle war and survive. They go to war with their neighbors for territory. They are the closest to humans now. On the other side of the river: Bonobos are ruled by a 'council' of women. They are smaller and psysically weaker as they did not have to survive war. They are way smarter and more emphatic. They also have a better spermcount and bigger penis than any other primate including humans relative ofcourse to their size. You see, man think they can rule trough domination. This usually ends up in fear tactics and war. The council of female Bonobos found another way. They rule trough love and frankly, alot of sex. Every year there is a period where neighboring groups come together and hold a big orgy fest. They 'trade' males so there can't be incest. Males are fine with this. Some return with the group and some stay in the new group after. They also work together flawlessly. Mostly being vegetarian or bug/ant eaters, They do hunt around 2 times a year, sometimes with multiple groups. One of those hunts is just before or after 'the festival' they hunt monkeys (not apes) or small Forrest deers. Their fights and disputes are resolved by... Sex. You see, not just human females know that sex is a powerful tool. A way to get to someone's heart without needing to kill your best assets. In war you lose people, the strongest people that are unmissable for a small tribe trying to survive but in love you make people. People that are needed to make the tribe trive. Love stimulates empathy and coöparation between members. As everyone does it with everyone (they are litterly the only ones besides humans to enjoy sex without procreation in mind and use different types of stands). There is no limit on same sex and as this is the way for generations, there is no jealousy either. It's effects can be seen by evolution itself. Psysically the Bonobos are smaller and less muscular in almost every aspect. But mentally they are the strongest (and smartest) ones. Also it helps that they are with alot more than chimps. If a fight would ever break out between them (wich isn't impossible as climate change and human intervention do dry rivers faster than a fire burns a chip and that's the only borderline holding them back.). I bet the chimps attack and make the first big hit. But their tactics of war are mainly raids or hit and runs. The second time they will try they'll be dead. Chimps eat baby apes and Bonobos with their empathy will not tolerate killing of their children. I think they'll signal neighbors and chimps will be overtaken by sheer numbers lead by a council of very angry mothers. Who knows, maybe there will even be survivers they can convert (mainly females if they can find that group). Although this last piece of Versus is just a hypothetical theory. Wich group would you rather belong to? The strong and tough chimps or the empathic and peaceful Bonobos? Last thing, the orgy fest is hold at the end of the raining season wich is also when chimps start their biggest raids, mainly to abduct women for their own tribe. Kind of a war festival instead of a love festival to start a season/new year. This may indicate that they holded these 'rituals' before they were seperated around 120.000 years ago. This would make them the oldest continuing ritual/festival known on the planet still practiced today.
Fish are sentient and have emotions. Most people don't know this because fish can't show those emotions by facial expressions like a dog can for example.

It is unclear whether or not this indicates actual "intelligence", but they are certainly sentient creatures, and not just snacks."

It honestly makes sense that they like having their heads rubbed so much. They have a ton of sensory organs in their snouts, so the area is really sensitive, and I doubt they ever get a gently rub or scratch out there in the wild.
I'm pretty sure cats domesticated themselves because no creature out there gives such good pets as humans. The easier access to food may have only been the cherry on top. I say this because some cats around my block stalk me relentlessly for pets, but I very seldom feed them, like once or twice a year. And it's not like they're not already fat.
The Ampullae of Lorenzini are gel filled cavities on the snouts of sharks used to perceive electromagnetic impulses, like the emanation from prey or the Earth's magnetic field. They are incredibly sensitive. A human putting a very electromagnetic appendage (a hand) over the snout may just overwhelm the ampules with a massive signal...it must be pleasurable as the sharks seem to love it!
Hard to overstate this, but seeing Emmas eyes as Jim petted her made me rewind and rewatch it several times because almost all of the shark footage I've ever seen has show shark eyes as cold and unfeeling (or lidded, as they do just prior to biting) but seeing Emmas eyes look around the way they did in this video made me think of sharks in a completely different way; i.e. not as something just to be feared and avoided, but as potentially warm and loving creatures. In the same way that most people don't think of cows or chickens as being loving, despite there being an abundance of footage of them playing games and snuggling up to their human friends....

@c. O Dubhlaoich - this fortunately has been disproven in the last decade. Unfortunately underpublished, however. Both marine biologists as well as animal communicators have teamed up to tackle this question from both the hard science and meta science angle. The repeated outcome: collective communication from the sharks that they do not want to bother us, that we are too salty from a food source standpoint, and if there ever is an unprovoked attack, it is almost always out of misunderstanding and not precontemplated intent.
It's not your typical MM type movie; it depicts the ugly and ignorant side of the human race.)
Right NOW, there are beautiful, powerful animals trapped in fake jungles, unaware they are about to be shot and killed for absolutely NO REASON. This is happening TODAY and every day in the USA. This is unconscionable; in the impoverished minds of these people, killing and being loud and obnoxious is cool. You see them every day.
They aren't Sentient they are just driven by emotions. Like a women.

I liked it. A lot.
Such a sweet story! I never knew sharks could be so affectionate to humans.
Animals value the ones that help.
Fish are sentient and have emotions. Most people don't know this because fish can't show those emotions by facial expressions like a dog can for example.
The magic of back & nose rubs
I met a stingray pupper and I named him Hermie and he was the sweetest little bugger EVER! He smiled, his skin was insanely soft and delicate, and his little flappy wings...I miss Hermie but I know he's out there living his best stingray life in the marine sanctuary.
Meanwhile, this shark is doing news reports on his interactions with humans:
"Most of us sharks think of humans as mindless, delicious snacks that don't swim well. But after spending years attempting to befriend one, I have discovered that they actually have feelings. And given enough time, they will begin to trust you. It is unclear whether or not this indicates actual "intelligence", but they are certainly sentient creatures, and not just snacks."

Actually sharks don’t eat humans, most of the time sharks confuse humans with other sea creatures and most of the time they let the human go after realizing it’s not food, or you pissed off the shark too much it wants to kill you but not eat you

@ what did I say that was incorrect, Jacob? I am an animal lover and a vegan and made a comment which contained a series of 100% factual statements , but which focused on how this video depicted *actual human evolution* and was an amazing, wonderful thing. I don’t know who you are, but it sounds like you don’t have a brain. Or perhaps you objected to my saying that this was a wonderful video depicting a wonderful relationship. I’m not sure. Your brain was probably doing something along the lines of ‘dur hur war war war which side this person on?’
You're correct, she is well fed with all the fish around, put her in water with no fish and when she's hungry she will attack the guy.
@@durere There was a study done that cats actually enjoy human affection more than food.
It's the S-Spot.
All the pets to the forbidden sea doggo
Hard to overstate this, but seeing Emmas eyes as Jim petted her made me rewind and rewatch it several times because almost all of the shark footage I've ever seen has show shark eyes as cold and unfeeling (or lidded, as they do just prior to biting) but seeing Emmas eyes look around the way they did in this video made me think of sharks in a completely different way; i.e. not as something just to be feared and avoided, but as potentially warm and loving creatures. In the same way that most people don't think of cows or chickens as being loving, despite there being an abundance of footage of them playing games and snuggling up to their human friends....
yeah i noticed near the end of the video the shark came up to him and the nose touched him without closing the lids, like not at all concerned about harm, ive never seen that before, that was actual trust.

Just like humans, sharks have personalities. Some of them are curious, kind, etc and some are really aggressive. And yeah, they do like to be cherished, specially in the nose
There was a picture in the National Geographic magazine about 3 or 4 years ago of this (I think) Frenchman who went out in one-person boat on the ocean with a great big mutha of a Great White following him, the story behind it was every time this particular guy goes out on the ocean in his little boat this same Great White would _always_ follow him and she never attacked him, only ever followed him ... this reminds me of a cuter version of that story 😊😊😊
Depending on the species. Bull sharks are known for being aggressive.
@Doesn't Jump to conclusions | That would be a mutation, not a deformity. Changes at the genetic level are mutations, while detrimental physical changes to the body are deformities. Mutations are sometimes random, sometimes directed toward survival, and have seemingly infinite possibilities.
What does agressive mean in context and it's something you choose. sharks have no Brain to know th right and wrong so comparing to humans is dumb. shark eat people while humans so it knowing it's wrong but they don't care

@Max Powers animals aren't all mindless you know and can in fact recognize humans🤡 This is a common misconception. Tiger sharks are also relatively intelligent. Sharks - their brain size relative to their body weight - is actually comparable to some mammals. They are capable of learning. The myth that sharks are mindless eating machines has been dispelled. They actually eat less than you think. They can go weeks without eating. They eat three percent of their body weight a day, which isn’t much. You can get sharks to respond to some types of stimulus, such as giving a reward … they have some cognitive capacities. Not like humans, but they’re not mindless.

We all need to be respectful of one another - it truly makes the difference :)
