  • Best Surf Casting Rods For Value & Performance! Longitude & Solaris by Okuma!
    I've been using these surf casting rods this month on my own time with different reels from Solterras to Tesoros. I even practiced casting at a soccer field with defunct Newells. My impression for these inexpensive rods are they perform just as well as any quality upper-end pricey surf-casting rod out there. So i'm going to start including them into my regular main gear that i'm still juggling around. In other words they cast & feel great when casting 4-8oz lead pyramids & banks. I lifted a small 2-1/2gal bucket with 2gal of saltwater in it at a pier while fishing just to see how the rod & tip handles the load, no difference from a Tiralejo, Nitro, Insane Surf, Battalion, Prevail, Black Hole, or any other rod i ever had or used. I still need to bring in a sizable strike like a GT, shark or ray to validify my gut instinct & feeling. For now i'm basing my assessment on casting lead weights to dead lifting water filled buckets. I'll post updates when they become available. Okuma rigs from JRA.
    So what i'm practicing with are-

      Oh no! Sorry to hear that. The blank used on the Solaris is more resilient, to me than the stiffer blank of the Longitude (it's closely related cousin). Yours is the first of me hearing of a Solaris breaking. Was it within warranty? This summer the NEW Solaris will be out. 12ft Surf Rod and rated 6-16oz!

    Thank you for the awesome review! I'd love to send you a product to get your thoughts on it. Not necessarily to put it on a video just feedback. Would that be possible? Mahalo!

    I have a Longitude 12 footer casting rod. I've been looking for the Solaris 12 footer casting for a while. It looks like no one is carrying them and Okuma has stopped making the Solaris 12 foot casting.

      Okuma is still making them. Just waiting during these Pandemic times for the next shipment. By the way Amazon & eBay both have 11footers. But if you want the 12ft i found one at Fish USA at a great price. Better jump on this as everyone else is reading this to at-

    Scuba Chris, does okuma make a casting 14 foot heavy power surf rod. I'm having trouble trying to find a long rod here in the states. The longer rods are sold in Australia or the U.K. can I get one made by okuma?

      I submitted my design for a 13ft & 14ft rod 2yrs ago & it's been out. It's been in my vids for almost a year being tested in the field and the final showing at- ua-cam.com/video/Kpk1DYaIs9I/v-deo.html

    i have a 12ft longitude...it was my first surf rod...if you are someone like me who always likes to hold on to the rod..this rod weighs too much. for like $90-99 you can get a 12ft Penn prevail which is a much better rod and weighs almost 7-8oz less than the Longitude. greater bite sensitivity too.

    • @otroflores91
      @otroflores91 5 років тому

      I've seen the okuma for as low as $55 on Amazon. Never pulled the trigger on buying one tho. The Penns definitely feel lightweight. I've felt both Rods at a local store.

    Are you sure the longitude uses a United Composite blank? The UC blanks are high quality made in USA and not cheap

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  5 років тому

      The Longitude is stamped with the CX stamp on the blank. CX is a United Composite blank. Thanks Jason:)

    Wow great price scuba Chris. What reel would you pair with the rods?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  5 років тому

      I'd say use a conventional that has either a narrow spool or a somewhat more compact feel & look. A large baitcaster like a Blue Yonder 7K would be good. I'm using a Teroso12 conventional. The older models were built so well that we used spinners on them. eBay dealers has some attractive prices on them.

    Do these surf cast rods not come with a trigger like standard baitcast rods?

    • @ScubaChris

      Only baitcasting models come that way, C or S models don't have that.

    Heavy as hell. Some people have taken the cork and reel holder off the rods, and that weights like 270 grams or more, but the blanks themselves are probably quite heavy. Okuma has rods that weights half of the Longitude nowadays.
    I have a 13 feet Longitude, and yes, it feels way too heavy. It can be used, and it's quite good for the price, but it leaves you the clear impression that you could swing the rod much faster if it weighted less.
    The web page of the Longitude said "graphite composite blanks". That means it's not 100% graphite. That would explain the weight. I expected the Solaris to weight far less than the Longitude, however. That's curious.

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  5 років тому

      Gotta have weight for a certain degree of strength. I used to use Nitros before, now those felt heavy. The Cedro Surf Rods are extremely light, strong & flexible. But for load it feels slightly flimsy. If i had a large shark on i'd feel better using the Longitude, or the GT Ulua HCS rod. But for a stand-up fight that requires a lot of movement it's the Cedros. I just used the Ulua Rods last night & again was impressed by the weight distribution & power. I chose them over the Longitude/Solaris because of the area i was in. A deep-water channel known for big fish. I know everyone has their preference & game plan. Just gotta figure out what equipment is best suited for you & your targeted species & locality. Thanks:)
