John quote-
"I'll write about 12 or 13 songs in a batch, then I, uh, don't do nuthin' for a couple of years.
So now I do this instead of deliverin' mail."
Derek dillman:
Jerry Douglas playing Big Mon on the intro as John Prine watches. Priceless. 😁
I've been listening to nothing but John Prine since he passed. Everytime I try and play something else it just doesn't feel right. When the music stops reality sets in. This video has been a great start to my morning. One of a kind man.
dude. u spoke my words. I have cried more since he left than when my mom died. and I didn't even hear of him until Colbert sang paradise with him. a week ago. I don't understand why I love him. I feel my father died.
@@MaIContent I think it's just the beautiful mystery that is music. Words so truly powerful that it's unlike anything else. Stay well brother. Here's to John.
Yeah me too, but I’ve been a fan for 20 plus yrs!!
@@bethvosburgh8294 I'm 19 so I can't say the same. But I have been a fan for 3 plus years! Lol.
Blaze and Towns are on my rotation as well.
John Prine saved me a lot of money in therapy fees, he was the heart and soul of America. God rest you, you are deeply missed. Mike Grant
John was very gracious afterwards to sign autographs and talk to the crowd. Class act.
John kindly invited my best friend and I to come back stage after his performance at Strawberry. He was so nice! He signed a couple of my LPs I had brought in hopes that if I was lucky to meet him! He chatted with us and we got our pictures taken with him.
He was one of my favorite singer/ songwriters.
I have seen him many times at Strawberry at Camp Mather. A beautiful man with a generous heart.❤
One of the most iconic songwriters of our time! I miss him.
Hope you finally get to enjoy that nine-mile long cigarette with your vodka and ginger ale. And thanks for all those great songs.
enjoy paradise John... we'll all keep you in our hearts
Di D
Now you done it.. ...😢 yes we will. He will will be missed , he was real nice man too. One of the best song writers ever.
April 7, 2020. RIP
And in our ears I hope you and Steve are showing them Angels how to sing real purdy like.
Today John Prine passed on to the real Paradise....God Blessed us with his life and musical talents !!!
Great to see him laughing and talking. This is how I remember him. ❤️ 💕💞 What a treasure we lost! #JPfanforever
Philip Donnelly. A marvelous guitarist who never received the acclaim he deserved. His work with John Prine and Nanci Griffith was lovely.
Steve goodman taught him alot
Rest in Peace, John. The world will miss you, but fondly remember you! You taught us all how to live life, more than you know.
Very sad that John Prine's story has now ended. He was one of my musical heroes. I spent many hours listening to his records - Sweet Revenge is on my turntable right now. I saw him live many times and I always loved how everyone would sing along. Here is a line from one of my favorite songs "My father died on the porch outside on an August afternoon. I sipped bourbon and cried with a friend by the light of the moon." The night he passed there was a supermoon and I sipped some bourbon in his honor. We'll miss you John. Thanks for all the joy and beauty you brought into the world.
Thanks for sharing this man. I think we are all feeling the same.
When you're somebody like John Prine, your story continues on for a long long time.
Agreed. He is gone but a long, long way from forgotten.
It's rare artists have the ability to write songs that transcend their own experience...John Prine made a career out of it!
John, you inspired so many of us to pick up a guitar and try to tell stories. You were the master - rest in peace, my friend.
John passed away today at 73. He was the best. The very best!
Absolutely, The Best, The Very BEST!
He got to my soul and heart. He also was a true master of words and poetry like no other. While he may one day be forgotten he will never be a soul that some of us don't feel. He knows us we know him.
It's not his music. His words were more real than all of us are willing to deal with. My salute to the greatest poet and wordsmith in history.
This one is really painful! We not only lost a great artist, but I feel like I lost a friend
Exactly how I feel. Yet I only knew him through live concerts. He was just so personable
John prine was my favourite singer songwriter for over 45 years.Rip john
This video should be in the Smithsonian ! Thank You Dale !
Ms Google will take good care of it... and share it around the World... shizaaaaam!!
it's priceless
Damn do I miss this place, those times and these people. RIP John Prine!
You were the best.
My brain could never do 4-6 things at once, left hand, right hand, tempo, remember words, remember cords, and breath with a toe tap. John could do it all and smoke at the same time. RIP another legend gone but not forgotten.
John Prine and Philip Donnelly, two gentle souls. Reunited once again in heaven. Miss them both.
The best songwriter and poet of our times. RIP John.
Wonderful little "fly-on-the-wall" video showing John in a way we don't usually get to see. Looks like it was a great day. Wish I'd been there. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Scotland 🏴
What a simple man. I mean that in the best possible way. Just awesome! RIP John.
It couldn’t be more fitting to have the sounds of children playing in the back ground during hello In there.. it almost makes me wanta cry because it gives you the feeling of growing older.. Hello to my hero You have been a true inspiration in my life and music and I shed a real tear as I close so here’s to seeing you around in some other place and time.. God bless
Died covid, just another 'loser' ...'donnie$$' ffr
This is an absolute gift! I was there! Listening to John since 74 and felt i was in a dream here. John was so nice! I remember going back to Berkeley and walkingon clouds for along time afterward.
John Prine was such a gift !
"I'll write about 12 or 13 songs in a batch, then I, uh, don't do nuthin' for a couple of years.
So now I do this instead of deliverin' mail."
This is fantastic. John's brilliance and natural humor shining at it's best.
bob haslett that's the spirit 😂
wishing a complete recovery for John Prine, Since I was introduced to his music in the early 70's, his songs have spoken to the events of my own life. I love his humanity and perspicacity. God bless you John.
sometimes words can't express your feelings, that's my situation. Thanks, John.
most times.. good post thanks
Such a Beautiful Treasure ❤️🤗😢❤️ Bringing every emotion upon the heart & then repeat. You sure were a Very Special Gift to us humans Mr. John Prine ☝️
what a festival it must have been amazing...i just found this in 2024..its making me take my god given talents of music more seriously...especially after finding tony rice a feww weeks back maybe a moth ago...such good players...one and all
It was amazing and it got better and more egalitarian every year; organized, fair music meadow entrance, lovely chair police, no smoking, low back chairs, friendly, kind folks, great food, no cell phones, safe, beautiful place near Yosemite. Everyone took care of each other. Paradise for 4 days.
the great ones are leaving us there will never be this kind of honest music again
Martin Blake: I was cameraman on this workshop/video; what an honor!
That's awesome. What a moment to capture. Are there any copies of vhs tapes floating around?
Thank you for your amazing contribution to the list of things I’ll be happy to remember throughout my life
John Prine ... the greatest storyteller/ songwriter ever and a genuinely good guy. That's Philip Donnelly RIP (the Clontarf Cowboy) all the way from Dublin playing guitar with John... another true gentleman!
Nice afternoon acti ity.
I have listened to John's music for a long time and I am so sad to hear of his passing, you will live on forever with me in my lifetime, RIP John
That line where he says Bonnie always makes him sing the verse "When I was a young girl" then flashes a wry smile is just vintage. What a cool Q and A format for this thing, leting a true storyteller share.
Another great early Camp Mather Strawberry. We'd get to the intimate "workshop" early for these so we'd get a good spot; always worth it. Later, we'd camp very nearby and mosey 50 yards to it. Great camping spot thanks to our friends who arrived early and saved us a tent space. Thank you! I miss Camp Mather.
Not forgotten as long as there is beautiful music & great touching poetry. RIP J.P.
Had the pleasure of doing sound for John back in the 80’s got to pick a few tunes with him in campground after show. I still play ten or fifteen of his songs whenever I play a gig these days.
Thats super cool
I would like to pluck ztrings with you some time
@@Jamesjoiner1919 always like pickin with friends. Too much fun!
John's great friend Philip Donnelly on guitar here died just a few months previous to John. They had some wild times together, I hope the reunion session is still going on. Have fun guys. ❤️☘️
What a beautiful and serene piece of film footage this is. I mean it does not get better than this.
We’re times really as simple as they feel in this?
What a wonderful guy! Entertaining the other Saints in heaven with your Out of This World Musical and comedy talents. Love you from Patrick
God damn. I've only just found John, and now I'm crying. Last week a friend heard me do ray la montagne's jolene and asked if I write lyrics. No, never. Somehow in my sleep that comment woke me up, writing. This gig is totally new to me at my old age, but today I wrote a whole JP lyric and turned it into a whole JP sound thing. and I could not be happier! RIP you Angelman:-)
Saw John in Halifax N.S. a few times . Each time was like seeing an old friend for the first time .
absolutely loved this God bless JP and God bless YT for delivering this to us
John prine, I have followed, and !oved, this man for about a half a century. Beautiful.
Barbara Sullivan I learned about the passing of John Prine yesterday on The View. I am Sheltered in Place because of the pandemic, and I have been listening to John Prine for two days now. Incredible talent. I hope people stay home and listen to John Prine until this terrible virus is eradicated. Don't take chances.
Barbara Sullivan , you are a kindred spirit. John Prine’s spirit will lead us through.
This brings back many memories and was recorded just about the time I discovered this wonderful story teller
Thank you Barbara, in these strange times listening to John Prine is the only thing that puts me at ease, and just feels right. God bless your Soul John Prine, the World and it's people were blessed to have you 💚☘.
Great loss to mankind as we know it! What a talent. We are blessed for his records!

...anyone else watch this on a regular basis?
Yes prine is a regular part of my life
this should have a billion views
15 Years or so ago John told us that he had had his birthday the day before upon which I initiated singing the Dutch version of Happy Birthday ("Lang Zal Hij Leven"/Long Shall he Live) and the whole of the Paradiso Club in Amsterdam joined in. Roughly a 1000 people sang for him, just like we do now in remembrance, but we are a larger gathering now, missing him.
The guy playing with John here is really good as well......RIP John....
YES indeed...the esteemed Musician,Phil Donnelly, guitar player extraordinaire from Ireland ...great friend and touring partner of John for many years...🦋💙🐦

We miss you already!
I'm in tears john was the best songwriter of all time
This is blowing my mind! Was just thinking about this last night as this was my first Strawberry, and thinking so much of John.
I didn't know who John Prine was until I heard about coronavirus and he was stuck up in the hospital, a personal dichotomy for me, a discovery of creativity of life and destruction of death that coalesce in song, verse, and life...when I get to heaven ___________.
Never heard of JP? *Huh* to your point?
Steve Earle declared, “Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world, and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that.” Except he was wrong. He forgot about John Prine. Get well John.
It's a sad to hear John Prine got that darn virus but he's a strong man, look what he's already gone through! I be looking forward to his next CD just got the tree of forgiveness . He should get a noble peace award ,love you lyrics and your music, God bless you man
That was fabulous.... and thanks for naming the person who backed him up... He was AWESOME..... Never knew much about John Prine... What a gentle soul.... heckofa nice guy... great story teller.... loved this clip
John Prine and Phil Donnelly both gone but so appreciated.
Coolest thing I've seen in a long while.
This video is a gem. Prine at his best.
Yep, John, you're right - that's CA and I was there. "Strawberry Bluegrass Festival" and New Grass Rival were there.
Praying for your speedy and full recovery!!! Hang in there John🙂
just what we needed tonight. We've been to Strawberry many times and saw John Prine there a few years after this. What a treat that was! thanks for posting.
SO glad two of my good friends and I got to see John Prine live at the Kirby Center a few years back. The show was awesome, John came out on stage talked about the Station a place he played before over 20 years prior to the present show. He said I like it here, think I'll stick around and play for a while this evening. And that he did for about 2 hrs. He didn't play THE GREAT COMPROMISE, BUT THE SHOW WAS PERFECT. The friends that was with me that night have passed away, we had a great night at that show...thank you John for the memories and your music. May you rest in peace brother...
you're from my town-i live actually in Kingston pa
Thanks for the memories, Dale. I went to that workshop--standing room ONLY!!
This legitimately might be the best Prine footage on youtube. Damn this is great. Thank you for sharing.
Rest in peace John .
Your songs will be remembered forever.
yup, just like we were right there... uniquely wonderful.... loved the camera work...like a family gathering that was homemade
Never be his equal. Not surprised they could sing his songs in Japan.
He doesnt seem to take himself too seriously, he may at this time not even be aware of how truly talented he is !
R.I.P. John.... 💖💖
5:59 Me wearing a Top of the Mornin' home grown buds t shirt by the brilliant artist Pat Ryan; still have the shirt. That was an amazing time at Camp Mather. Thanks for posting these videos!
i was there
This was at Camp Mather , near Yosemite Park.
that was a great weekend at strawberry..john headlined with peter rowan and he did the song about 'the airline lost the elephant's trunk'.....
Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone. Just discovered it a few days ago actually. A hidden gem.
This a John prine that at time pink Cadillac was next and he was at his normal self incredible that quality great video lucky they saved it !
Love John P., and he chews gum while singing just like John L.
godspeed all health and joy and comfort to you
Chris Christophersen once said of John Prine that " He wrote songs that were so good, we decided we should break his thumbs",,, Hahahaaaaa.... Ol Sarge...
@Jim W Nah, only angry people could feel that way - which rules Kris out.
Version 'i' Only heard was "This 'kid' is so good, the rest of US are gonna have to kill him.'' last 2 words are Gist of it, the rest is not fully accurate.
@Jim W idunno, but 'Kris' not Close atall, to John in any way!!!! maybe i *blinked?*
I was at Strawberry in '84 incredible experience! No workshops that i can remember.
man o man some seriously real old skool stuff wowzaz . thanks...
John prine a river of words ,reminds me of bob Dillon ,great words come to him thru people he meets
Oregon 2021 watching prine
Thanks, this is awesome!
Love you John
In a word, priceless.
John Prine seems like such a genuine soul with little pretense and a warm sense of humor...just one of the people. Unfortunately, like anyone, rich or famous, poor or unknown, we're all subject to basic realities like exposing ourselves to toxic substances can be harmful to us. I notice John smoking here (and coughing at points) wondering about his current battle with lung cancer. As a former smoker I've come to recognize cigarettes for what they really are: poison.
I'm a 29 year old smoker and a huge Prine fan. Quiting is hard, and as they say, you gotta pay to play. Congratulations on quitting.
Smoking is committing suicide in public. He's lucky to be alive. I wish him the best in his struggle with the virus. He's a wonderful guy!!!
RIP John
a great weekend and oh so long ago...also on the bill was peter rowan...
and lo and behold there I am in the front row at 5:45 wearing my ray bans..
the sets that night were incredible...'the airline lost the elephant's trunk'...
Lucky Duck.
Very cool
Such a Pity and LoSS.🙄 to have not known John Prine in the 70s 🤔(although I CaN recall hearing several songs since checking him out after receiving this heartbreaking news from friends in Holland ..
RIP John Prine & Bless his sweet and amazing wife, Fiona and his 3 sons .🙏🙄 Cant handle too many days in Quarantine" without hearing his storys and song lyrics..TheN I happen to hear a song,..Im able to..
Relate to! .thanks for your Great perspectives too Mr Prine!!!👏👏👏👏👏
Amen to that as far as his stage presence back in the 70's. There's also something about those first two albums that he had more trouble capturing in his later albums
@@jsigur157 He captured that certain something again with "Fair and Square" and "The Tree of Forgiveness". And many Prine fans liked a lot of albums in-between. It all comes down what each of us likes.
@@4orrcountry Yes I am sure. For me it's been a wonderment why his popularity increased as his physical abilities weakened.Going to a Prine concert in the '70s was an electric experience, carried off by just John and his guitar
quote: " I happen to hear a song,..Im able to..
Relate to! " one Can 'relate to' most Any' John's
Awesome! 2nd great vid I saw today! Life is good.
Goddamn, this is good. Thank you so much for posting this.
God Bless
Thank you so much for posting this. Such a joy to watch - and what a great chap!
Aw, at the end he reveals that it is California. There is one tree that looks a little large for Strawberry Park, CT. A lot of fine musicians played there.
A REAL person in a REAL place !
Thanks .. Excellent !
Grande JP.
