I've had John Prine in my back pocket for 40 years, I'm 54 now. Like my best friend I never met.

I grew up in Maywood Ill. I went to Proviso East HS w/John's brother. To see the old neighbor hood in this wonderful homegrown success story, has my childhood footprints walking down those familiar train tracks. Thank You John my Forever Angel in the sky. ~*
On this Friday Night in Heaven, John is just sitting back with his Dad enjoying a Vodka and Ginger Ale, after finishing his first 9-mile long cigarette. He looks at his Dad and says, hey you old peckerhead, aren't you glad you were wrong. Thank You, John.
James Anthony : He is also sitting there writing songs with Steve Goodman
This is the best comment I've seen in relation to his passing.
Love it ❤ RIP John
May have great talent with a pen but dont sing worth a nickel. Maybe just recording lack of quality
Whistling between puff while he and Steve Goodman fish.
Hearing of John Prine's death wasn't a kick in the teeth or a punch in the gut. It was a shot in my heart. An explosion of grief. Prine was one of the most human of beings that I have ever 'known'. His warmth, love, and humor has always been a balm for our times. The missing might be unbearable.
Feeling was the same here. I knew he was hospitalized, then a few days later, I myself was unexpectedly hospitalized. I didn't know it, but my gallbladder had gone to the dark side, and was trying to kill me for years. 2wks ago it decided to finish me off. It inflamed my pancreas and liver. After days of test it was confirmed the gallbladder was the culprit, and a relatively routine surgery set off a domino recovery, all other organs immediately reversed course and returned to healthy function.
The morning after surgery, I woke early, and decided I had to know if Prine had made it too, or was at least still hanging on. Sadly, no, he had passed on 8-12hrs earlier. We passed each other in opposite directions. I'm still crying, days later.
After a good cry, I started playing his music, nonstop, into the open air, and I still am. I've made several new converts to the gospel of Prine!
J Potter You have no idea how glad I am to read news like yours. I just lost my Ma. She was 84 and I had taken care of her full time for last 15 years. This last year was bad news on top of bad news. I don’t know you but I read your comment waiting for the bad news to come but it didn’t. You whipped sickness and for some reason it just hit me in a good way to read your story. God Bless friend..
@@RealPeterGunn Thanks for your note ... I am sorry to hear about the loss of your Ma. I am glad my own sotry was a bright spot. I'm still playing the Prine LOL.
My project for the day is to visit an 85yr-old friend and install an mp3 player for her. I've already loaded it up with all the Prine I have, as well as Elvis, Johnny Cash, Sinatra, Orbison, others. And it will allow her to listen to the radio, etc. She's been stuck with basic cable for years, I have to fix that!
It all ends in bad news, but its what we do to stave it off that matters. I hope your year improves....it's been a weird one for everybody. Probably at best mixed bags for most. I am so lucky and blessed, I have to enjoy it while it lasts and share what I can.
💧
Agree.. Hurts so bad
This is priceless, thank you. John Prine is the only person in the world with millions of Number One fans. And every one of us feels this giant hole of loss. He had a lot more to give and at 73, he could still rock a stage like nobody else. Hope you enjoyed your float down the Green River, John. We will keep your memory and your music alive until we all meet again at the Tree of Forgiveness. Thank you for bringing us this far.

@@mariasoares9708 wtf are you talking about, kid?
I was a radio DJ when I listened to his first album. Songs that were simple, personal and funny made it easy to like Johns unpretentious style and grace. When i heard 'Hello in there', the reflective lyrics made me pause but I preferred to air his up-tempo, humorous tracks and quickly forgot about 'Hello'. Now, hearing that song for the first time in 40 years It floored me in a way that only grief can impose and I cried my eyes out! I have become the 'old people' that my younger self could only superficially appreciate. Hearing of his passing just made it a more bittersweet pill to swallow. What a master of pathos and the human condition he was!
Love John !!!
RIP John!
Me too. In my 50s now. But been listening to him about 20 years. I love you, John!
This is fucking unbelievable, thanks for posting, I'll be going back to this one regularly until Mr Peabody's coal train hauls me away.
John Prine wore his suit in concert nearly every time. Honoring his grandpa.
Really?

THANK YOU for posting this wonderful video! This was a TERRIBLE year and we lost many treasures, chief among them was the death of John Prine, a true American musical treasure who has brought light, beauty, humor, and truth to the lives of millions with his talent. RIP John Prine! We will never see another like you, but you left us all of your music which will continue to give us joy.
Not one single "dislike" thumbs down button. Who could dislike John Prine?
I remember soundstage & austin city limits used to have the best musicians which you would never see or hear otherwise...pbs long time ago
Did you hear that? That's the sound of hearts breaking thanks John
He never forgot where he came from. Rest in peace, dear John Prine.

Don't worry about John " he was in heaven before he died "
Was unfamiliar with John Prine until today - with news of his COVID-19 death I wanted to check him out. Now I'm hooked. RIP dear new friend.
You've made a hell of a good discovery.
River Norahs me too 😉
You are in for a treat. One recommendation I have is first items to download are his live albums. His between song storytelling is incredible humorous and really displays what makes him in my opinion "America's Storyteller"
I agree with Christopher Hopkins. You really need to check out some of his live performances to hear the stories that go along with the songs. If you have time (we all do now), check out the live version of "That's the way the world goes round" LIVE VERSION IN ALASKA. The story he tells in middle of song will have you crying with laughter instead of sadness. It's on UA-cam.
@@scotthall8046 I just looked this up - sitting here at work laughing out loud. Thank you.
I was introduced to John Prine just last week and I"ve become a big fan! I'm 68! Never too late to discover a fantastice musician whose songs really touch you!
This is absolutely priceless, just like John Prine. No one can compare!
At about this time, I was a DJ in Madison Wisconsin. John came to town to do a show and came by the radio station for an interview. He was very mellow and soft spoken, but also displayed his signature dry humor. When he left through the back door, he saw my '53 Pontiac and went nuts over it. We went over and he jumped in the drivers seat, admiring the old styling. We have all lost a great American treasure in John Prine.
He's driving a pretty sweet '51 Ford in this. He had an eye for old cars for sure.
Such a deeply felt personal loss over here, stings like Garcia, Lennon and Zevon.
right on
I was introduced to John in 1973 , saw him at the Troubadour in L.A. It was a wonderful solo performance, left a mark on me as much as the many times I saw him after that. Funny thing is that almost all the people I introduced to his music have called me and thanked me for doing so and it breaks my heart all over again. Thank you for this footage. R.I.P John
What rock have I been living under?!? At 61 years old, I’d never heard of John Prine until the past couple weeks when people started posting about him fighting Coronavirus. One thing I do know is that he will live on forever through his amazing music, because I’ve just now become a fan after he’s passed. Rest In Peace John, and thank you for leaving us with such a beautiful legacy!
So many greats who never really got the national exposure they should have gotten . I dont remember when I found John Prine been a while about the same time I found Townes Van zant . I was following Dylan and all roads lead to Dylan . John Prine was and still is amazing , Sure missing John .
I agree with so many "Greats", I found John with Austin City Limits around 78...and yes, all roads lead to Dylan
@@thekev2020 Loved Austin City limits and I am same time frame ..you stay safe kev ..I am a kev too ..God bless
Stephen Bommarito I must have been under the same rock!!! Totally agree he was amazing 😉
Stephen Bommarito welcome friend, I’ve been listening to prine getting close to fifty years , never gets old.
if you never heard of John Prine, you're about to get a whole lot of truth dropped on ya.
oh boy... I jumped when I read your name... you are the name sake of my dear sweet uncle from Chula Vista, CA. Passed away in 1960 in USAF accident.
John Prine"s music is a reflection of life. He touches on emotions that brings tears and smiles at the same time. Very few songwriters are as relatable. We are so lucky to have had him.
I first heard of John Prine the day he died. I know now what I've been missing. Rest in peace sweet man. I'll continue to love your music until it's my turn.
Blessed to know of this guy and all the superior musicianship and songwriting surrounding him. Awesome American realness and truth. Thanx J.P. enjoy the cigarette 9 miles long 8))

I saw him for the first time at Summerfest in Milwaukee circa 1980. We saw him last 5/25/19 at the Overture Center in Madison, WI. Thanks for all the memories. You are greatly missed.
Listened to John’s music for 43 years and never realized till he passed how many of his songs were about death and dying
This makes me appreciate Pink Cadillac a lot more
can i like this a million times?
This is when I became a fan of John Prine, actually about 1978, 79. So many good memories of seeing John Prine in concert over the years, listening to his vinyl albums, which I still have today. When I moved from SC to NM in 2002 on my way I wasn't able to pick up a radio station for miles somewhere around OK and TX. No music. I started singing John Prine songs to my little dacschund for about 3 hours. She was entranced and wasn't so bored. Neither was I, by the way. Sadly, my little Lucy passed away in 2016. John Prine has been a part of my life for over 40 years and still will be. There are so many of his songs that resonated from way back and are still meaningful now and I'm sure for generations to come. Can't even tell you how much of an impact he has had on my children who are in their mid to late 40s even now.
One of the nicest men that will ever live.
This is the show that introduced me to John Prine. I'm very thankful
Brilliant songwriter........Nice guy!!!!.........A genuine talent!
Thanks for the vids. Keep uploading so I can play them on my broken radio!
Missing John in this world on this Sunday afternoon.
The best version of Angel of Montgomery ever! This whole video is essential for any John Prine fan. He was definitely very entertaining and at the top of his game. Gotta say, John was a hottie back in the day.
I work security, since the corna has shut concerts down I sit at home and watch UA-cam shows. John’s show at the Oregon Zoo, last of the season, was the last concert I worked security for. Ended on a special run for the year. Thanks John 🎶💔🎶💔
A friend always had a free ticket. I saw john at the newport folk festival from 1990 to 1997. I think he was there every other year. This is such a treasure. Because I always saw him and a guitar and that was it. And that was plenty good. Hearing him now playing with pianos and slide guitars and other guitars. And how much john enjoyed it, you could see. As he was on stage the photographers were trying to take his picture. And he would play hide and seek with them and dodge them and give them a hard time.. he had such a big smile doing that . He was a joy.
Thanks for this trip down memory lane. You backed a real winner!!!
"John Prine died at age 73, now that's a sad song!"
You finish it and we'll all sing it!
I must say, the piano player is freakin awesome...

👆👌👍😁👏👏👏👏👏😘
THE BEST in the North.. South..East..AND West!!!
Awesome stuff; thanks for posting. Love how this showcases not only John Prine's music, but his legendary laid-back sense of humor as well!
I first heard of John at 17years of age and fixin to graduate high school. My best friends brother had joined the Navy and after about a year a shipmate of his talked him into going AWAL with him and on their way home he ran up on this album John Prine Prime Prine bought it and brought it home! I thought it was the craziest thing I’d ever heard, but the second time I heard it it became a good crazy. Copied it 8 trac I believe and it just got to be something we played Wether at home or in the woods standing around a fire at night drinkin and entertaining Mother Nature !
Thank you thank you thank you for this post! Just before you'd posted it I looked for it in order to find my favorite version of Bruised Orange, and pray for his recovery and it was no longer anywhere to be found on UA-cam or the interwebs. So glad to see it again.
Beyond incredible performance! So raw, genuine and real! Barely anyone like that today.
Tyler's cut from the same cloth.
The wonderfully unique and talented John Prine was a gift from God this is an inspirational glimpse into his music and personality which brightened Our Lives for All Too Short a Time. We never could get enough of this wonderful fellow. Rest in peace from Patrick
Today our country(USA) is in the midst of confrontations on all levels. A friend said last week, "I fear we're heading for a revolution." I didn't see it coming. Today, I do. Then I went to UA-cam and found this wonderful 50 minute video of John Prine. Listening to his beautiful lyrics capturing the essence of the human experiences, I am calm. Thankfully, I can find a peaceful respite with John's music. Miss him so much, and oh, so grateful for his music that will live on for posterity.
Few artists put as much thought into their lyrics as Prine did. What a talent.
I love how there is vision of Leo Le Blanc here playing steel pedal. He played on John's debut LP, which would have to be one of the strongest debut LPs ever recorded. RIP John
I remember watching this when it was new on channel 11 in Chicago...John Prine and the Famous Potatoes (John Burns son of Jethro on guitar) were really good guys! You go John love ya dude!
And that's Tom "Pickles" Piekarski on Bass! Glad to have called him one of my dear friends. Now John & he are reunited, making the best damn music up in heaven.
Forty years later, so now I'm holding my head in my hands because John's playing "Bruised Orange?" Yes.
Well, that was simply fantastic.
Ubangi Stomp played by John Prine, never expected that!
What a wonderful film to see this morning. My kind of fun music and he played my all time fave Paradise.
Very Nice 👌 John love...you little cutie...🍸🦋✨
I few years ago I decided to drop what I was doing and went to see J.P. in concert at the Paramount theater in Seattle. My two teenage Kids came with me. We met some new Friends in the Crowd while waiting to get into the theater. I have been Comforted knowing when I tear up at John's passing I'm Not Alone. Our J.P. Friends and my kids are sad with me.
John's Music is Very Endearing. I'm so Glad J.P. was a part of our Norman Rockwell trip my Kids and I took to Seattle just as the Kids Stopped being Kids and moved on to Adulthood.
A Heart Felt Thanks John!!! M.H.
John Prine is a huge gift to all of mankind. Never ever will there be another genious poet like him who spoke to all of our hearts and gleamed the very best out of ach one of us. You were one of a kind John. The great kind !! PSH
Is it true that Dylan's favorite songwriter was John Prine?
He listed several but said about Prine, his stuff is pure proustian existentialism. Midwestern mind trips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. He listed sam Stone, Donald and Lydia as songs no one else could have written. His fave was lake marie.
First JP album I heard was Bruised Orange...I was hooked....bought up every CD I could find, and they are highly treasured here. Thanks for the music John, God love ya.
Movin' to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches
Movin' to the country,
Gonna eat me a lot of peaches
Movin' to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches
Movin' to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches
Peaches come from a can,
They were put there by a man
In a factory downtown
If I had my little way,
I'd eat peaches every day
Sun-soakin' bulges in the shade
Movin' to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches
Movin' to the country,
Gonna eat me a lot of peaches
Movin' to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches
Movin' to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches
Take a little naps where the roots all twist
Squished a rotten peach in my fist
And dreamed about you, woman,
I poked my finger down inside
Make a little room for an ant to hide
Nature's candy in my hand or can or a pie
Millions of peaches, peaches for me
Millions of peaches, peaches for free
Look out!

My brother Jerry and I were at this tapping at the WTTW studio in 1980. Halfway through the taping, a fire broke out on one of the lights near the back of the stage, and the studio started filling up with smoke. The taping was halted for about 30 minutes while the fire was put out and the smoke cleared. John wasn't phased by the incident at all. That night, John was being backed up by the "Famous Potatoes"who's lead guitar player was John Burns, son of the great mandolin player Jethro Burns.
Please post.
Wish I was there.
I promise u ol Johns biggest fan base is a small town in southern Ohio called Ironton..I’m 43 and when we weren’t listening to Tupac, Pearl Jam or Metallica ..we always drove around and smoked weed and jammed to his beautiful words!johns one of the greatest
This is the best John Prine video ever! I love the ones from his house in Maywood. It confirms that I was at the right place last week when I sat out front of that house and listened to John Prine. He just seems like he was the coolest person, Truely one of the good guys.
Always did love that guitar lick from, 'Automobile'. John Prine...a genius, on par with Dylan, Lennon, and Willie. Rest in peace friend.

Am so VERY glad that someone had the idea to film all of this footage...YES Film...In this age of camera phones we take such a thing for granted...John was such a incredible talent and truly a gift to all who came to love and appreciate him...his memory will live on even after all of us are gone...and those who are lucky enough can join him for a vodka and ginger ale and listen to some old favorites played by the rock n roll band he said he would start...on the other side of the pearly gates

Amazing to see the energy of a young John Prine. I had been into his music 6-7 years when this was recorded so his music has been with me for almost 3/4 of my life. I don't remember if I watched that when it first came out or not, though I did watch most of the Soundstage shows. Like so many, I am taking this very hard.
I'm so thankful he was.

I think the cut to the audience at 1:17 reveals Lennon and Bromberg enjoying a little Prine Time!!

Thanks for that !
Ah.....Bromberg, another treasure 🎶
I was introduced to John in September, 1977. 'Had just turned 18 and was a freshman in college. The Student Union was hosting a series of free outdoor concerts on its "quad". A warm Saturday afternoon where a good time was had by all. Six months later a local coffee shop hosted him for a 50-cent cover charge. This show was a solo performance with acoustic guitar; quite intimate. A year later, the shop had him back, but, with a $2.00 charge ... too expensive for me, but, in hindsight, probably quite reasonable. I'm left with good feelings with joy and hope in my heart. Rest peacefully, John.
Jimmy B I did the math with an inflation calculator and $2 in 1977 is $8.52 in 2020. Not as a judgement about your income or how you choose to spend it but $8.52 today is literally a soda at a movie. People routinely paid $70-$100 to see him in similar venues for over 20 years.
@@emzyking5847 In 1977, $2 was an hours work. John was pretty much just another guy with a guitar at that time (and there were bunches of them performing at bars, cafes, parks, etc. at the time. I think I paid $4 to see Melissa Manchester about the same time frame, and she was famous. She'd been on The Midnight Special and everything.
I was introduced to John's music about the same time by one of my English professors. I heard "Illegal Smile" and I was hooked. I wouldn't judge Jimmy B for not dishing out the $2. Hindsight is always 20/20.
I went to so many of his concerts over the years that I lost count. The most I paid was $70 for front row, center seats. Every concert was wonderful and unique but that one was extra special and my daughter came away with his guitar pick.
John's music was a treasure and he will be sorely missed.
Hope he and Steve Goodman are jamming together and John's smoking that 9 mile long cigarette and drinking beer (or vodka and ginger ale).
Lovely memory ~

John is the mailman in our neighborhood, only with this huge talent. That is why we identify with him so easily. He is one of us, and we only see that he's a genius when he picks up a guitar and starts to sing. He wrote about our lives, and his music was like giving his guitar a voice to sing along.
