Interesting how in his later years he’s got a Bob Dylan rasp, compared to his earlier sound. Oh well, even with the hell that he went through with his health in the last 20 years, it still didn’t rob his voice of character. I’ve only just discovered his work but how could I have never known it for all these years? It’s like someone turned the lights on in my head and said, ‘Hello in there!’
I cant imagine there ever being another john prine. there is something fragile and gentle and huge and fearless and full of love and precious and intimate. I will miss him like I don't miss other performers. I feel I lost my father again.
Rich, I feel so much the same way. I saw John Prine in September last year at Red Rocks in Colorado. He danced and shuffled off of the stage with such joy and happiness and it made me cry because that's exactly something my dad would have done, dancing in his old man way. I miss my dad so much, and John Prine reminded me so much of him in his joy and fun. Prine was truly a national treasure as an artist and as a human being. We were blessed to be alive at the same time with him.
@@nunyabidness9895 Yeah I agree. I was so scared we were going to lose him. Then we didn't hear anything for a week, and I thought surely that was a good sign. Then suddenly he's gone! And you realize how fragile life is, and how lucky we have been to live in such great years for music. My friends and I have been playing Prine songs for almost 50 years. And it's impossible to ever replace a guy like John. His wit and compassion, and the way he can evoke such deep raw emotion with a couple of lines of lyrics, he was one of a kind! Yes I cried too... But I take solace in knowing he's having that vodka and giner ale, and the cigarette that's nine miles long, surrounded by friends and family in Heaven.
AND THERE NEVER WILL BE ANOTHER LIKE JOHN-PRINE EVEN IF YOU WAIT A TRILLION YEARS !!!!!!!! JOHN IS THE ONLY ARTIST THAT CAN MAKE ME LAUGH ONE MINUTE , THEN CRY THE NEXT !!!!!
I am 65 and have been listening to John Prine since I was in high school. This Chicago mailman is truly an American treasure, and I was so sad when he died. He was a poet and a musician and I will listen to him all my years. RIP JP
Was introduced to John Prine’s music back in 1972 . I’ve been a fan ever since. One of a kind talent and will be sorely missed. God rest your soul John Prine.
Sadly, I think, I found John Prine after my Mum passed. I should say gladly, because it helped me through the pain. It was a few weeks before it really hit me. His music really helped. I really loved me Mum. 90 years she was my Mum, and then my friend. I could share anything with her. Man I miss her. It's about a year now. Seems like yesterday. Don't understand the delay. Miss her everyday ! Annie Lindsay Smith 🙏🎗️ Rest in Peace Mum. 🕊️
This is absolutely lovely. I don't know if I've ever seen two more gentle and genuine souls sitting in the same room as John Prine and Gordon Lightfoot. The image of Gordon smiling and singing along as he savors John's music is as sweet as it gets. This whole scene, especially hearing my all-time favorite song, "Summer's End," reaches deep inside me...filling me with nothing but peace, love and gratitude...
i grew upin Gary, and. lived in the Chigo metro area all my life, and with John starting out in Chicago, I can't fivure out how i never heard of John prine. I'm 71 now and somehow stumbled across a segment with JOHN PRINE, and I've been enjoying listening to him all througb my day!!! I hope John lives to be 100 years old, so I can listen for all his new songs !
@@mcguiganmike Just listen to the auto tuned so called singers that have forty Dancers on stage to hide the fact that they have no talent . Just look at the shit that is on TV to know that people have no idea what is good. I heard Prine's first record and cried it moved me that much and it still does to this day . Sorry for the long rant i would just like to know what the 194 people who didn't like this listen to
I'm reading your comment while listening to Neil Degrasse describe the size of a hole discovered recently in space and he says there just aren't any words we typically use to adequately describe the size of that emptiness. What are the chances.
Best thing I can say is that JP was never background music. You had to stop what you were doing and listen and laugh or cry, probably both within one song.
John's unassuming benevolence sets everyone at ease in the audience even though he knows he has them all in the palm of his hands. Absolute master class
I thought of this video… hearing the passing of Gordon Lightfoot… last night. I remember how moved he was listening to John sing. I was grateful to see John at Radio City Music Hall on what would turn out to be his last tour. His passing hit very hard… he had survived cancer… twice… but Covid stole him away. Now Gordon Lightfoot has left us also… It’s so strange to realize that as I get older myself… I shouldn’t be surprised to hear about people I grew up listening to or watching… are gradually living their last years… and one day they are … gone. We all have our limited time… I guess… it’s just the way it is. Hope that John’s spirit was able to be aware of Gordon’s spirit’s arrival… two great voices… reunited… 🎵💐🎵 Thank You… both… for the music 🎶 🎼🎵🎶 You are both greatly appreciated… R.I.P.
My favorite show. I've never cried because someone wrote music so beautiful in my life. Til this man. I'm kidding. But, he does a great job of putting tears in eyes. Try and say I'm wrong. I dare you
this is my favourite recording session of John Prine ...i just keep coming back to listen again and again...whoever was responsible for the audio that day did an awesome job 👍
the song " sam stone " made me quit speed and probably saved my life in 77 . it was nearly 40 years later that I found who John prine was . now he will forever be one of the two most important singer wordsmiths in my world
I heard John Prine a couple years ago. I Was amazed at his song writing and guitar picking then and I'm still amazed.I would've loved to have gone rainbow trout fishing at any time or place with Johnny..Anyone that has praise and admiration for Gordon Lightfoot is "aces" in my book.
John was a great songwriter with an eternal take on daily life--an every- man for our times with a heart as big as the World. Gone too soon, but I'm grateful for every minute he was here. I"m sure he's rockin' with the angels!!🎸😇🎵
I fell in love with John's music when I heard his first album at a record store in Kansas City & I bought it on the spot & took it home & listened to it over & over. Sam Stone ripped my heart out. I''m 73 now & I had a lot of friends who went to Vietnam I lost a lot them in Vietnam & I lost many more to the drugs they took to try to forget the physical & mental pain from the war. John sang their story so well. He expressed loss, pain & humor in his songs. I also loved Please Don't Bury Me & lots more.. His concerts were huge highlights of my life! I've loved him for 50 yrs & still do. .
Right on brother ,, from a lil sister that's been listening to him for bout 48 years now,, ty 4 your service ,, and so sorry 4 all the loss,, when we visited the Vietnam wall ,,I had a peace symbol necklace on ,, I took it off payed it there at wall ,,I didnt deserve to wear it ,, God Bless you,,and may john rest easy ,, he was part of everything life had to offer ,,in his songs ,, takes me back to different places different times some where good some where not so good ,, but ,,I treasure each of my souvenirs, they took me so long to collect ,, lyin here in bed with my darlin of 38 years ,, listening to music we lived by ,,and will die with ,, I wish u all lots of luv ,peace ,stay safe n healthy dont leave ol world to soon more memories to b made an John's music will b there in back of our minds as we make em then re live em all again ❤🎶🎵🎶🌹
I've played Prine's songs for almost 50 years. One time I was singing Far From Me and when I was done, someone asked what the heck does "an old broken bottle looks just like a diamond ring" mean? I couldn't fathom how anybody couldn't see the symbolism in that line..... Also always loved "I guess that love's like a Christmas card, decorate a tree, throw it in the yard" too. But John Prine had so many evocative and eloquent lines in his hundreds of tunes. Cheers!
Sounds just like scat singing , just a really special kind! How can anyone sum up essences of life in just a few syllables. I try but fail, then return to John and his old D-28.
Couldn’t sleep, it was 4:30am. Decided to listen to some music. I stumbled upon this video, put my headphones on and cried through the whole thing. God bless this fantastic musician/songwriter who entered my life in 1977 and hasn’t left since.
Tonight I just read that Gordon Lightfoot has died 😢, and had to come watch this moment again when John sings his tribute to Gordon (at 6:36). Two of my favorites gone now but never forgotten❤❤
The world that was worth living in died with John Prine but his music will always be a reminder of that world. The world that many people live in now is a complete mystery to me.
The love, respect, and reverence for John Prine shown by the audience is so touching. I am grateful that this special moment in time was shared with the world. John is missed but never forgotten.
John Prine doing the Hag for Gordon Lightfoot. I am not sure I am worthy. The mind of a poet, the soul of an old woman and the heart of a newborn. Long Live Prine!
I would have walked barefoot for miles over broken glass to have been in that room! Once you listen to John Prine you can't stop. And that old Martin he's playing sounds so amazing!
That looks like GORDON LIGHTFOOT sitting there - humming along. The LAST TIME I saw him - in person - was in THE VILLAGE CORNER club in Toronto, in 1965. I used to see him all the time there. I've ALWAYS LOVED GORDIE. IT'S so GOOD TO SEE HIM. Hold on - I just remembered the last time ACTUALLY that I saw him was at his house in Rosedale at his CHRISTMAS PARTY. GOD BLESS YOU GORDIE!.
I am the same age as John, grew up with him, just in another country. I love him more every time I play this, tears always flow. Can't wait to get to heaven, maybe, just maybe, I can get a guest spot in his band.....God willing.
add his work to that of guy clark and townes van zandt and you never have to listen to anything else... it's all covered ... at least anything that matters anyway
Have you ever been in church and the preacher is preaching a sermon and it feels like he knows something you did last night and he is preaching right at you? Prine's lyrics give you that same feeling.
He cuts to the core and makes us feel better for not being the only ones confused/hurt/jealous/ amused and so many other feeelings.....smile for John, it's all he ever really wanted.
Tony, how right you are....he's the preacher all of us need. The "happier" the John Prine song, the deeper I knew the lyrics would be and the closer I would listen. He exemplified what it means to be an "artist" in everything he did.
I was at this (I'm in this video, but I won't say where hehe) and it truly is one of my most cherished memories. I can remember the entire experience photographically. John is one of my top 5 favourite songwriters ever... I was choking back tears the whole damn time. RIP John Prine... the small window of time you visited us here changed the lives of so many.
I will add that the energy of the room was comparable only to a handful of live performances I've ever attended - the absolute intimacy - you could hear a pin drop. All were fixated on this man whose music we love so dearly.
I'm so jealous! When I think that I could have had a John Prine house party for a few thousand, my heart stops and my eyes leak. His minds work continues to be a gift
I turned 51 this past July , I first heard John Prine when I was 14. I have deep love, respect & admiration for him ! I will spend the rest of my days here on earth regretting I never saw him in person! Thank you so much for this video! I’ve watched & listened more times than I can count! Much love & peace John Prine ❤❤
".......You've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness. You're out there runnin' just to be on the run". Only John Prine can deliver the mail like that.
This is pure gold! I would have never thought watching a living room concert on my laptop could deliver so much joy, I wish everyone I knew would take an hour to sit back, relax and enjoy greatness! RIP JP
THANK YOU JOHN,!!! YOU BRING MEMORIES ALIVE AND MAKE ME 😂 AND WE ALL KNOW LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE 🤣!!! YOU ARE AMAZING MAN WITH SUCH A GIFT OF TOUCHING OUR HEARTS AND SOULS!!!!
You can have all the stadium and arena shows and festivals you want. I will take a small space performance like this 10/10 times. Just a magnificent show.
What a treat, my mother would put Prine on the record player, crack a Miller Light, smoke a cigarette and we would sing and dance to his tunes. I don't have her anymore, but I still have the album's. Once in awhile on the weekends you can hear John blaring from my home.
I'm only catching up with him a year or two before his death via a Jimmy Buffett cover of Paradise. Between that and Sam Stone, it spoke volumes about JP to me. You miss too much of Life in New Jersey!! Wish I'd had people to see in Muhlenberg Cty!!
I can feel this. In the fibers of my soul. From John's emotion to Mr. Lightfooot singing and remembering another place in time.ive listened to this 3x today. And I've sobbed everytime. And I'm thankful. Rest in paradise john
I used to roll my eyes when my Mom would listen to John Prine. It's my biggest childhood regret. Now I'm her age when she tried to introduce his music to me and I get it. Better late than never 🤷♀️
I share it with my 13 year old. And we both listen to Prine before his passing and now more than ever. Of course I have taken him to concerts since he was old enough to understand. Never too late I say even if he rolls his eyes one day he will remember our time listening to music. Just like you do.
Was planning to move to Gulfport when i turned 65 in 2021. Any town that loved John Prine, and he and Fiona loved them, well thats my kind of town. That darn COVID. Hope Fiona is doing well.
@@basilwilson2796 - I agree, and we were lucky to have him for as long as we did, because we've almost lost him twice before. I hope that up in Heaven, God has him singing scurrilous songs to the choir, and the angels are all sputtering, trying to keep from laughing. RIP John.
Let's toast John Prine forever at every Happy Hour. Picture him in his rock band, smoking a cigarette 9 miles long, kissing his sweetheart. So happy that his "manager" Fiona got him to write The Tree of Forgiveness. And his duets with Iris Dement will live to eternity. RIP
I never heard of John Prine until today but feel like I’ve known his music forever. Thank you for posting this performance as it seems he was surrounded by friends and family that love and admire him. I feel privileged to feel a part of it.
He wrote songs of love, life, and death, like no one else. His sweet presence, wittiness and positivity should be an inspiration to every one. "When I Get to Heaven" was far from my favorite song from Tree of Forgiveness, but suddenly that song seems to mean the world to me. Rest in peace, John. There will never be anyone like you.

❤
I cant imagine there ever being another john prine. there is something fragile and gentle and huge and fearless and full of love and precious and intimate. I will miss him like I don't miss other performers. I feel I lost my father again.
Rich Perez I love your words. I’m heartbroken
I cried my eyes out when I heard....I thought he was getting better.
No American Music more perfect than John Prine and Gordon Lightfoot. So glad to see this. Thank You.
I agree, except that Gordon Lightfoot was Canadian. No worries though, he was loved by all who heard him.
I am 65 and have been listening to John Prine since I was in high school. This Chicago mailman is truly an American treasure, and I was so sad when he died. He was a poet and a musician and I will listen to him all my years. RIP JP
Agree. People die. It's OK. Not a tragedy cause he's a singer.
He was a Chi-Town mailman ? How did I miss that ? What the heck was I doing ? 😢
He enjoyed living in Ireland
Was introduced to John Prine’s music back in 1972 . I’ve been a fan ever since. One of a kind talent and will be sorely missed. God rest your soul John Prine.
His guitar playing is also out of this world great
Sadly, I think, I found John Prine after my Mum passed.
Gordon Lightfoot singing along w/ 'Far From Me' is beautiful.

Hi
We all have demons but this music purifies the souls. RIP John
I'm wrecked. He was everyone's storyteller, the best chronicler of all of our tumult. There's a hole in our universe now with his echo in it.
Beautifully written, Mari.
@@shanerowe5289 So true.
@@robertparadis3395 That's our work as humans, to fill the void (ideally), not make it bigger.
John's unassuming benevolence sets everyone at ease in the audience even though he knows he has them all in the palm of his hands. Absolute master class
Masterclass... truly an accurate description of these 45 minutes.
Now Gordon Lightfoot has left us also…
It’s so strange to realize that as I get older myself… I shouldn’t be surprised to hear about people I grew up listening to or watching… are gradually living their last years… and one day they are … gone. We all have our limited time… I guess… it’s just the way it is. Hope that John’s spirit was able to be aware of Gordon’s spirit’s arrival… two great voices… reunited… 🎵💐🎵
Thank You… both… for the music 🎶 🎼🎵🎶
You are both greatly appreciated… R.I.P.
My favorite show. I've never cried because someone wrote music so beautiful in my life. Til this man. I'm kidding. But, he does a great job of putting tears in eyes. Try and say I'm wrong. I dare you
I never before cried at the passing of a celebrity, but John Prine was so much more. 😢
When it's time to cry. We'll all realize it. At similar times
God is here with us.
I feel it.
The look on Gordon's face speaks as deeply as John's song. I miss you old friend.

the song " sam stone " made me quit speed and probably saved my life in 77 . it was nearly 40 years later that I found who John prine was . now he will forever be one of the two most important singer wordsmiths in my world

Prine and Gord in the same room.....if I had been there I believe I would've exploded.
Jason Wilber is incredible and totally in sync with John, an accompanist who honed this over several years.
I've loved him for 50 yrs & still do. .

He had so many verses that meant so much. That is one of them.
Cheers!

Tony Morris well said. You my friend captured it entirely.
Tony, how right you are....he's the preacher all of us need. The "happier" the John Prine song, the deeper I knew the lyrics would be and the closer I would listen. He exemplified what it means to be an "artist" in everything he did.
