I am listening to John Prine singing Sam Stone and tearing up. My dad served in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge. And listening to this song brings tears to my eyes. This song is for every veteran who fights wars that shouldn't be. Peace.
My dad landed with the 2nd wave of landings on Okinawa. After coming home he never could see blood, even a minor injury, without feeling weak and anxious. He saw way too much blood on Okinawa. When those brave men came home they were different than before they left. Thanks dad, and thanks to every American who served in the military, whenever and wherever you were. Miss you a lot.
I feel as though the loss of my two friends of almost 50 years have left me again, all over again. Grief is such a sad thing for those of us left living. But can't help feeling that John is havin' a high time with those who've gone before him. Smoke one for me there, John.
When we are long gone and America is a distant memory dug up in the history books, we can be proud that we were a nation that allowed voices like Prine's, and Nelson's, and Simpson's, and Childer's to fill the air. American treasure.

She found John at his start, she tells me regularly about seeing him at his starting venues like the quiet knight and the earl of old town in Chicago, as well as the student union at the college of dupage. I remember listening to that album and I was hooked, I heard something so special and being 14 in the 2000s that was odd music to be listening too so it was very hard for me to spread it to friends but I wasn't ashamed and absolutely tried. Regardless I never gave up on what I felt in John's music I stayed a true fan. It does my heart good to hear John's getting a lifetime achievement award for whatever that's worth on tonight's Grammy show. He's a national treasure.
I discovered this song from Alabama 3. I discovered Sturgill Simpson from a local Public Radio show hosted by the late Bill Shapiro. I discovered this video just now while looking to experience some John Prine in the wake of the news of his passing. OMG. This is perfect. RIP, Mr. Prine. You were a rare bird.
I first heard and fell in love with John Prine and his music in 1975. I have never gotten tired of listening to him. Such a talented songwriter, singer, and storyteller.
When I met my now husband in 2005 he turned me on to Mr. Prine. My life became richer for sure. He will be missed by so many. Thank you John for many hours of enjoyment! RIP
One of my favorite songs and one of the first John Prine songs I learned to play and sing more than 45 years ago. Still can’t believe that John Prine has passed away....so sad and broken hearted. Thank you Mr Prine for a lifetime of music that always puts a smile on my face. Rest In Peace....
I love this duet that Sturgill.Simpson and JOHN PRINE PERFORM.TOGETHER..THEY BLEND TOGETHER SO PERFECTLY AND THE INSTRUMENTAL PART OF THE SONG IS BEAUTIFUL ❤️ ALONG WITH THE LYRICS AND THEIR TWO VOICES ON THE " SPEED OF THE SOUND OF LONELINESS IS TOTALLY AWESOME
John sings "Souvenirs" and "Sam Stone" solo, followed by duets on "Speed Of The Sound of Loneliness" and "Paradise". In between he tells some great stories. And next week, he'll be 70 years old. An American giant of music.
I hope I'll have a chance to see him live. I live in Nashville but damn, that old man gets around. When he's here the tickets are $200 a pop. I love John Prine, I love my wife also. She wouldn't be happy if I went to see him without her. That's the only way I could afford it.
Still one of my favorite John Prine songs (and there are many). Who else could write a line like “broken hearts and dirty windows make life difficult to see.” Genius. You’re writing songs for the Heavenly choir now, John. We miss you down here.
I got to watch John Prine and Steve Goodman in Milwaukee bars and coffee shops in the late 60's early 70's before anyone else knew how good they were. I never get tired of hearing his stuff. I miss Steve Goodman tremendously. I'm glad John has persevered and thrived. I still have all his records including a signed copy of his eponymous first album. It's about worn out, but I love the sound. It previews his voice today. Thanks John, for all the memories
RIP JOHN..I HAVE LISTENED TO YOU SINCE THE 70'S AND WILL NEVER GET OVER THE DEEP TRUTH OF YOUR SONGS LIKE MUELENBERG COUNTY GREEN 🍏 RIVER..AND OF COURSE SAM STONE . I HAVE ENJOYED WATCHING JOHN PERFORM WITH IRIS ( CAN'T THINK OF HER LAST NAME ) BUT THEIR PERFORMANCE WAS 🌹 LOVELY AND HILARIOUS ( 🌈 RAINBOWS IN THEIR EYES), THAT MAY SOUND FAMILIAR TO FANS OF JOHN'S AND IRIS'S. HE IS A TROOPER; HIS LYRICS ALWAYS STAND OUT IN MY MIND. YOU ARE TALENTED AND INNOVATIVE IN THE WAY YOU WRITE YOUR SONGS. WE WILL ALL MISS YOU NOW AND THROUGH THE YEARS. WHAT AN AMAZING SINGER AND 🎸 GUITARIST YOU ARE. I WILL HAVE MANY FOND MEMORIES OF YOU. GOD REST YOUR SOUL. WE ALL LOVE YOU!!

What a delightful short concert . John Prine is a Master songwriter/singer , a true legend . He does a beautiful job here with Sturgill , who is a true gentleman and a fine performer . I love the way he respects the Master and accompanies him so well . A real gem , a wonderful slice of Americana , the kind we can ALL be proud of . In the very troubled world and where so much nastiness abounds , listening to John and Sturg makes the heart feel good . George Lewis , Sr
John Prime was a wonderful and a TRUE musician.. He sang a song with the words " Eat a lot of 🍑 peaches" that I loved..I enjoyed all his songs I ever heard. May GOD REST HIS SOUL.
John Prine has been in my life’s playlist for near fifty years and I’m a better man for having known his songs. Thank you sir and I’m hopeful to see the artists he’s influenced carry on the mantle of great American writer musicians
John Prime had performed with Iris Dement in a song ( about big old 💕 hearts in their eyes)., I had mentioned this in an earlier reply but I could not 🚫 recall Miss Dement's last name..Miss Dement spent part of her life in.Paragould, Arkansas , and later her family moved to California..Along with Mr. PRINE, WHO HAS BEEN AN EXTREMELY TALENTED SINGER, MS. DEMENT HAS SANG AND RECORDED MANY INTERESTING SONGS. ONE WAS SANG IN THE COHEN BROTHERS VERSION OF " TRUE GRIT", AN OLD HYMN WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE.
There is just something about the aging of great artist's voices that gives them so much more depth. John Prine, Billie Holiday...you just hear the added depth of feeling that transcends the original recordings we all remember.
Kathy Piazza Here's one or two Ill set em up Long time running by the. Tragically hip. Destined to be a blues standard maybe. Ugh. Oh. Yeah ...... Neil young. Song is Called Helpless. I think. Wow heavy songs Diamonte en Bruto
The first time I heard John Prine was at a small venue near Philadelphia, I immediately fell in love with him and his music. When I heard that he was sick with the covid19 my heart broke. I pray for his recovery we need him and his music in our world.
He is one of the greatest song writer's ever. I pray he survives. Im a first responder and i know how dire his situation is. But we do what we do. Maybe in July l can feel like i can kiss my kidos again. Hearts breakin but i cant show it.
He did win one in 2006 for Best Contemporary Folk album and been nominated four other times including this year for his latest album. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year as well...I know it's late in his career but I am happy people are finally seeing his genius.
My buddy and I opened for John Prine around 1970 at a college coffee house. His first album had just come out and we were huge fans from the get-go. We did a few of his songs in our opening set. We got his permission. He was a really nice guy. Great memory.
Thank you Mr. Prine for all the beautiful music you have given this world. We need it more than ever these days. Enjoy your 9 mile cigarette up in heaven.
Heard and saw John in 1970 at the Troubadour in LA...loved him then and love him still....the best...best writing, best singing, and yes even the best looking....hang in there John.
Saw him in 74 in Farmington, NM. Only about 10 people attended because nobody had heard of him. He sang and played as if it was a full house! Saw him again in 2009 to a full house in Red Bank, NJ after his ordeal with throat cancer.
Been a fan since 1973. Seen him a few times. I was front row center 2006 Madison, WI. Paul Thorn opened. My kids grew up on a steady diet of Johns tunes. John Prine and Harry Chaplin are the greatest of story tellers. Broken hearts and dirty windows make life difficult to see.
What a Man. You broke my heart countless times John. You lifted it above all expectations. You expanded my life John. Thank you. I will miss you forever.
I believe I just saw John Prine hand-off the Country Music baton to Sturgill. "Remember, the 'Country' in country music is America." Pres. Jimmy Carter
I used to take guitar lessons at the Old Town School of Folk Music back in the late 70's to mid/late 80's. A bunch of John Prine's music was included in our songbook. Great songs!
No doubt the man is an absolute treasure, songs that hit common people directly, never redundant, as is most of the crappy ass country of today's radio airwaves. So, any singer/songwriter, globally famous, or back-porch megastar who doesn't know Mr Prine, or pick at least one Prine song in their repertoire is as about as useless tits on a boar hogg! Love all ya'll GOD BLESS.
I don't know for sure, but I have heard from several folks that Bob Dylan referred to John Prine as one of music's greatest storytellers. True or not, I certainly agree with that complement.
Omg. He is coming to Toronto in December! I am 61 and only heard him because I was lucky enough to be alive when DJ's played what they wanted: Led Zepplin, The Stones, The Doors AND John Prine-on the same FM station in 1971 ♥
was that the show Langhorne slim opened up for him. iam still kicking myself for missing show. Iam only 47 but been a prine fan since I was 17. A true treasure to music
Saw the man live last night. Powerful performance. Great to see the legends interpret their songs in different ways as they get older. True musician at work .
The first time I heard John Prine I was a fan. I think Sturgis probably thought the same. It wasn’t about great vocals or guitar, it was the vocals and the story. A great song writer!
It’s been too many years since I’ve got to see you John! I look forward to seeing you again someday! You’ve definitely made my life a brighter one to live! Even as a stubborn, know it all, snot nosed 12 year old, you still managed to slow me down long enough to listen and you even kept me still long enough to understand! I love you John, god bless brother!!
I first saw John play at the Atlantic Folk Music Festival in the late 70’s at the John Moxum farm in Nova Scotia at the age of 16, I became addicted to his music. 25 years later I got to meet him at the Edmonton Folk Fest. When I told him I was from Nova Scotia he began to me some stories of how much he enjoyed playing there. Then he gave me the honor of putting his arm around me and posing for a photo, it’s a prized possession of mine. I was lucky enough to see him perform about 15 times throughout my life, even got to see him at Red Rocks in Denver with Levon Helm, what a treat. To this day I love to listen and play his music with friends, there will never be another JP 😢
Mr Prine is an absolute treasure and I'm so glad I've seen him live several times. He used to come to a little festival in western KY and play. :) Great memories.
No matter how many times I listen to Sam Stone sung by Mr. John Prine, tears run down my cheeks and my heart aches!!

I had the Opportunity to see Mr. Prine solo.... Front row.....Woodstock Opera House in the 90’S.....Blessed!
John sings "Souvenirs" and "Sam Stone" solo, followed by duets on "Speed Of The Sound of Loneliness" and "Paradise". In between he tells some great stories. And next week, he'll be 70 years old. An American giant of music.
Wonderful the way these two have found a way to harmonize. Vicki Govan, end of June 2017
sigh, amen
As a disabled Vietnam veteran, Prine’s song “The Great Compromise” summed it the war and have haunted me since I first heard it. Thank you John!
He's a legend and most people don't know who he is. Sad
I hope I'll have a chance to see him live. I live in Nashville but damn, that old man gets around. When he's here the tickets are $200 a pop. I love John Prine, I love my wife also. She wouldn't be happy if I went to see him without her. That's the only way I could afford it.
Swamping myself with his music now he was a legend so bloody sad
Go easy singing postman! You will be missed and you will be remembered. Your songs were about us. About our world and condition. Thank you.
If you replaced "Cathy" with "Chrissy" the song could have been about me and my first fiancee.
"Ain't it funny how an old broken bottle looks just like a diamond ring"
John Prine fills every cell in my body witn joy every time I hear him. Thank you John. You have been one of the highlights of my life.
OK Power
I agree, the vibes bend my soul.
Such warmth from this man ! So sadly missed !
Smiles smiles smiles. Those are my souvenirs. Thanks so much for mentioning us veterans.
All the way from the south of Scotland his songs are still being played frequently here. What a man. Just brilliant.
Saw John for one-night gig in Vegas last Wednesday nite - it was awesome. The man's a legend. His band knows it too.
I can't believe it's already been 2 years since John Prine passed!
Missing John on my Birthday Eve!
Grateful and giving Thanks for a lifetime of his great lyrics and sense of Humour.
Hopefully John is playing in God's bar band.

Sir, may you rest in peace. Your wonderful talent will remain alive in many hearts.
There is just something about the aging of great artist's voices that gives them so much more depth. John Prine, Billie Holiday...you just hear the added depth of feeling that transcends the original recordings we all remember.
AintNo Disco gives this song gravitas - he was so young when wrote it, it fits better with his age at this performance. Always brought me tears.
Kathy Piazza Gravitas. Nice.
Brian Kelly Thanks
Kathy Piazza Here's one or two Ill set em up Long time running by the. Tragically hip. Destined to be a blues standard maybe. Ugh. Oh. Yeah ...... Neil young. Song is Called Helpless. I think. Wow heavy songs Diamonte en Bruto
Billie Holiday was only 44 when she died but she probably lived more than most.
The first time I heard John Prine was at a small venue near Philadelphia, I immediately fell in love with him and his music. When I heard that he was sick with the covid19 my heart broke. I pray for his recovery we need him and his music in our world.
Not Bob it's Em
Must have the Main Point. Saw him many times there
@@frankangelo7336 Ys it was the Main Point. Decades ago!
He is one of the greatest song writer's ever. I pray he survives. Im a first responder and i know how dire his situation is. But we do what we do. Maybe in July l can feel like i can kiss my kidos again. Hearts breakin but i cant show it.
Jay Gonzalez thanks Jay, May God Bless You!
Prines voice is better than it's ever been. This man deserves a Grammy, PERIOD....
He did win one in 2006 for Best Contemporary Folk album and been nominated four other times including this year for his latest album. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year as well...I know it's late in his career but I am happy people are finally seeing his genius.
He says he like his post-cancer voice better... Heard an interview on NPR
Having a beer and shots of whiskey tonight and listening to John Prine . RIP John . ❤
Goosebumps from beginning to end. “The last of a dying breed “
sweet songs never last too long on broken radios..
Amicsas great legend will be missed you will live in many peoples hearts as long as we can hear your music
Listening to Souvenirs always brings tears thinking about Steve Goodman. He went way too soon.
One of the all-time greats. A legend has left us, and we are poorer because of it.
This man!! This man!! I listen to his music EVERY EVERY EVERY DAY!! God Bless, John Prine!
The wonderful Mr. Prine is fighting for his life as we listen to his gifts right now...let everyone pray for his recovery
He's a treasure we don't need to lose right now.
Unfortunately he couldn't whip this one, may he rest in peace and never be forgotten. 🙏
It’s a sad sad day losing an American Treasure like John Prine. This is gonna hurt for a while.
How fortunate we are to experience such talent as Sturgill Simpson and John Prine on the same stage.
Been a fan since 1973. Seen him a few times. I was front row center 2006 Madison, WI. Paul Thorn opened. My kids grew up on a steady diet of Johns tunes. John Prine and Harry Chaplin are the greatest of story tellers. Broken hearts and dirty windows make life difficult to see.
. . . agreed!!. . .but. . PLEASE. .just add the late, GREAT Steve GOODMAN!!. . John's great buddy, songWriting partner and fellow CHICAGOAN!!!. . . R.I.P.sweet Stevie. . .a proud Chgo.gurl
What a Man. You broke my heart countless times John. You lifted it above all expectations. You expanded my life John. Thank you. I will miss you forever.
I believe I just saw John Prine hand-off the Country Music baton to Sturgill. "Remember, the 'Country' in country music is America." Pres. Jimmy Carter
unanimous300 nah Sturgill isn't country
"Country" industrialists likely would like to appropriate these guys. Instead, try "folk". Try softer.
@@joshrussell8271 His first two albums were. Along with the Dead Dont Die. Try Four Flame Candles by him. Great song
Jacques Blaque I’ll say “folk,” because it really is softer, but in my heart, Sturge is country.
kathie clifton Country western folk blues rock gospel. I can hear it all in there
I miss John Prine so much.... RIP, bud. Thank you for all the music.
I used to take guitar lessons at the Old Town School of Folk Music back in the late 70's to mid/late 80's. A bunch of John Prine's music was included in our songbook. Great songs!
I can’t imagine a world without John Prine
I know, me too. Everyday I wake up.. afraid to check the news.
d. j. Sad news today y’all.. may he live forever in his music and thru us the fans.
Remember listening to John Prine, Steve Goodman and Bonnie Kolack at the Earl of Old Town in the early 70s. What a treat.
We love you always John. I'm crying and laughing tonight. You are a blessing to us. Rest easy my friend.
Who else can make you laugh and cry in the same song... been listening for 50 years🙏🏼
John is at his best all by himself, 3 chords-a gravely vocal-and a story that cuts through eternity
Found John Prine through listening to Sturgill Simpson. Watched this clip many times, hard to watch it tonight. RIP gentle man.
John Prine.....The Best songwriter ever in my opinion....
I'd have to agree...very few people can combine humor and heartache the way he does.
"the man is an absolute treasure" Treasure being the operative word for sure!
Guess you’ve never heard of BOB DYLAN or Leonard Cohen.
I don't know for sure, but I have heard from several folks that Bob Dylan referred to John Prine as one of music's greatest storytellers. True or not, I certainly agree with that complement.
John was definitely one of the greatest musicians I've enjoyed in my lifetime. Thanks for the good times your music brought to my life! ❤ R.I.P.
can't stop the tears. But the happy memories of aha moments that he brought into our lives will outlast them. Broken hearts and dirty windows...
I don't know if I'll ever hear this song again without tearing up. RIP John Prine.
The fight is over and he’s now a star in heaven
He he writes songs to the way my soul feels.!
A true treasure to music
god dammit John. ya make me cry. I miss you terribly so....
RIP - one of the best songwriters ever
Just Glad I found John Prine , wish I could of seen him in Concert , RIP John Prine The WorldHas Lost A Hero 🙏
I’m crushed to learn of the passing of this national treasure.
Played a gig tonight. Mentioned JPs passing. Did 3 JP tunes. One of the best. Thx John. RIP
beautiful music. Prines a gifted songwriter with a voice from God. Sturge is a genius and a gentleman.
Farewell John. This old world won't be the same without you. THis is a wonderul little gem of a performance; thanks for posting it.
If I could only click the like button a hundred times! Thanks John!
"Sam Stone" I ain't crying , I just got something in my eye lol
Hell ya, Sturgill has been carrying the torch for years. John Prine is a legend. A great performance.
Wrote souvenirs on the way to show??
Gifted from the start!
Sweet man. Sweet music. What a loss. Thanks for the music.
Yeah, here's this masterpiece that tugs at your heart strings that I came up with in a few minutes.
Two of my absolute favorite musicians , just add Mr Childers. Rest in peace John , hope your flag decal got you in !!!
you know he's in!
Mr Prine is an absolute treasure and I'm so glad I've seen him live several times. He used to come to a little festival in western KY and play. :) Great memories.
I am so glad I got to see John perform live so many years ago. Now I need to go see Sturgill.
RIP to a music legend..sad day in music
