I met him once and it was one of my best memories ever. I love hearing all these stories that confirms not only was he one of the greatest songwriters, but one of the funniest and most down to Earth people ever.

I was fortunate enough to meet John one night in Miami. was the best night of my life. the kindest, funniest, sweetest man ive ever met. people say never meet your idols. I was blessed to meet him. he was amazing. i will never forget that night. I got to go backstage and hang out with him and the band for a few hours. it was amazing. i have some pics of the night and i look star struck. thank you Otis for putting all this together. its nice to hear these stories. he truly was a man among men

I saw John in Greensboro North Carolina at the Carolina theater and There was a fellow next to me I didn't know him but he had too much to drink and through the whole show he was just hollering at John, way to go John, etc
and his friend was with him , was quiet trying to quiet him down and John ends up singing his famous song I think the title is a "quit hollering at me" and gets to the last part of the song where there's a pregnant pause and this guy screams out "way to go John!" and John looks right at this guy and finishes the song singing "quit hollering at me"! It was a perfect moment!
I met John Prine when he was still a mail carrier in Chicago. It was at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago round about Oct 1970. Had no clue of who he was or would be! Just a really humorous humble man who knew how to play guitar and tell great stories! He was generous with his time and willing to entertain and enlighten a 12 year old kid who wanted to learn how to play guitar! I saw him a few years later at a couple of shows he did at place called Amazing Grace in Evanston (a small venue with excellent acoustics) it held at most a few hundred people it would be packed wall to wall if there were 200 in the audience. A cherished memory I’ll carry dearly till the day I cross over!

An amazing interview… I absolutely love that I grew up listening to all these old greats and that I caught John Prine on tour in 2012 at Wolf Trap Virginia… he was an amazing man, musician singer/song writer… I raised my sons listening to all the same old greats of that ERA as did my father raised my sister an I… music is the gift that keeps on giving♥️🎶♥️
I'm sorry, but I'm so depressed that I've got to go watch some old videos of John Prine singing. But, thanks for this video and I pray that all of these friends have nothing but wonderful memories of John.
Prine was one of the top 5 live shows that I ever saw...blasted for 90 minutes, no prisoners. I love this channel!

Wow. Just got through the whole compilation. I met John in the 1980’s. I think I told the story on here a while back. He married a girl from my hometown. I miss the hell out of John Prine. Thank God I have his music. Thanks Otis and friends!

Never got to meet him but I was blessed to see him perform his wonderful tunes at the Paramount Theater in Austin. He had an amazing band. But, when he performed solo was the best part of the show. RIP, JP!

As soon as I heard Sam Stone, I ran to the record store and bought the album.
John Prine was the king of "three chords and the truth" writing and storytelling. Knowing now that he loved to fish and cook, it all makes sense. The mind is most creative when wandering while the body is doing mundane stuff like cutting grass and washing dishes (or hunting and gathering). Comic genius Andy Kaufman knew this and had a side job busking restaurant tables.

Saw him a few times at a place in Bloomington on north walnut. It changed owners and names over the years (Oscar's/Time Out ). He came there relatively often, always tried to catch him. It was an intimate setting, especially with him. Good memories!

I like all kinds of music. Often times I listen to music that is good and music that is great but it may not be mainstream - artists like Dylan, Prine and Steve Earl. During Vietnam I got a John Prine disk but at the time I was into Rock and I guess it sounded too country. Then, I guess, 15 years later a friend said I should listen to Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings. So I went out and bought that tape and listened to it over and over. Then a few years later I got In Spite Of Ourselves - his songs but sung by female artists. That was another great one. A lot of folks haven’t heard of John Prine but, yeah, they have missed out on some one great.I’ve often wondered what he was like in person and now I’am getting the lowdown. I knew early on that he was a mailman. Now Iam seeing that he liked to hang out w friends, fishing, playing cards, meatloaf and some ‘shine. I was lucky enough to see him in person 15 years before he died. He performed in my hometown. I loved every song.

1973 I was just back from Vietnam stationed in San Francisco Bay Area. Radio station KSAN (RIP Dusty Sreet) played a lot of JP’’s “Common Sense” and I was hooked! My family roots are Hopkins County, KY, and I remember as a very young tike being taken to see the Peabody drag line working a surface seam near Paradise, KY. Who was this guy that synergized rural KY, Vietnam, and the S.F.Bay area in the early 1970’? “Come back to us Barbara Lewis, Hari Krisna, Beauregard”😍

So weird, but I am SURE I met John Prine (at the time I thought he'd said John Prime) at Brookfield Zoo near Chicago, very close to where he grew up and I visited an Aunt near there every year living in SW Michigan. We were..hmmm...8, 9, 10 or so, happened two families get on the train at Main Gate same time & we ended up together, found out were same age born 6 months apart on different sides of Lake Michigan, so talked as we took a few rounds around on the train, hung out a while.... Never connected it of course to anything until way later.

i think Cobain belongs in the list......speculatroily, as a not dave grohl fan however a nice guy he clealrly is Nirvana was fine with the Bleach drummer and Grohls banging helped launch their live career out of the statrosphere and thanks to Andy Wallace and the not nearly as likable Butch Vig their recordings were great, but i suspect, esp given the announced collab between Cobain with Michael stipe which would have surely been unqiue and given Cobains prowess as a writer poet artist, that Nirvana would not have lasted, how could it have.....and Grohl would have baged away in a different direction...(im ean the dude made insnae money as th star of a band whos name he admits he doesnt like come on man lol) anyway i agree with almost everything rev todd ever says, just like brother otis, but i do think he could include Cobain but aint no feelings hurt.....love love love....when i get ot heaven, im gonna shake johns hand and thank him for more great music poetry soul saving than one man could stand then ima have a cockatil and cig 9 mile long wiht my dad too and unless i get up there before Rev Todd with him too.....anyone is welcome but we sitll got some l i v i n to down here thanks brother otis! - SJOCR
