John didn't have the best voice, he wasn't the best guitar player, he was a great storyteller, composer, and comedic entertainer. He would tell a story before and after each song. After he had most of his vocal cords cut out due to throat cancer he managed to still entertain us. RIP. John!

I had no idea that had died one evening in April as I had been in the back pasture all afternoon and well into the night digging fence posts. I remember coming in around midnight, made a cold meat loaf and a glass of cream sherry, picked up my 69 D-45 and started off at the top of my two hour setllist with John Sebastian's "Stories We Could Tell", took a bite and a sip... Buffett's "If I Could Just Get It On Paper", another bite and another sip. Ironically, Please Don't Bury Me had popped into my head, but for the life of me couldn't remember the opening line.... so I decided on "Bruised Orange" Not a dozen words into the first chorus my daughter (a huge JP fan) came downstairs and with tears in her eyes, apologized for interrupting and told me that John Prine had died. I made me a hot dog, got a glass of ginger ale (without the vodka).... and my daughter and I stayed up all night - played every one of the ninety or so that I have somehow managed to commit to memory in this swiss cheese brain of mine. And I remember thinking that I'm only one of a million folks out there who will make his music immortal....

    0:56: LOL.
    Related story too ...
At one of the 6-8 times seeing JP live, mid way thru the show, after a funny little, "song story" he started strumming the beginning to the next one
when a fan started applauding loudly, as if the song was he favorite. JP stopped and asked, "How do you know which one this is? I've got a half dozen start the same way ...:"
Now this may read like a snarky quip by him but of course it wasn't, just a bit of matter-of-fact self-effacing humor, we all loved about his show. The in-between songs anecdotes every bit as fun as the songs themselves.

In early 1998, Prine was diagnosed with squamous-cell cancer on the right side of his neck. He had major surgery to remove a substantial amount of diseased tissue, followed by six weeks of radiation therapy.[49] The surgery removed a piece of his neck and severed a few nerves in his tongue, while the radiation damaged some salivary glands. A year of recuperation and speech therapy were necessary before he could perform again.[50] The operation altered his vocals and added a gravelly tone to his voice.[51]
In 2013, Prine underwent surgery to remove cancer in his left lung. After the surgery, a physical therapist put him through an unusual workout to build stamina; Prine was required to run up and down his house stairs, grab his guitar while still out of breath, and sing two songs.

His passing was the one of the biggest losses of my life, he and his music felt like best friends that I’ve known since 1971. His music resides deep in my heart, as it does for many others. I recently came across a video about musicians getting through the pandemic, next came videos of John Prine, which brought out my deep grief once again. His wonderful spirit and music touched so many people, including those he never knew!! I’m happy to have passed on the love of his music to my son! 😊
I was also a big fan of his good friend, Steve Goodman.

I first discovered JP playing Sam Stone on an LP with various artists. It was not until the Great Days Anthology that I heard him again and I was addicted for life since then. I bought all his old and newer work ever since. With Leonard Cohen an Neil Young he forms my favourite male trio.
Only saw him twice: in Paradiso Amsterdam and the Patronaat Haarlem. Wow i was deeply move by these performances and very sad his Antwerp performance was first postponed and later cancellend because of health issues.
JP’s Please don’t bury me and Sandy Danny’s no end are on top of my burial music list.

While John was still on this earth I would hear him on Pandora, UA-cam, or the radio and his music brought a tear, or laugh, a smile, or a nod of understanding. Now three years after his leaving us, I still react the same way to his voice and songs, but there is also a twinge of the sadness that is just never going to leave my heart.

I am glad you liked it and understand what I was trying to do. So sad John died the next day, instead of recovering like everyone. Everyone was praying for him. He had so much love and music left. Please check out my UA-cam channel Cast of Characters Live. My friends Tonio K. and Tom Paxton are worth watching.

The simple reason I still play guitar(not the greatest)is due to sir John Prine and being able to make a song and felt like a rock star at 23 ;61 now and still play those 3 chords more polished now l.o.l Love ya john.enjoy that vodka and ginger ale.Ill bring a torch to light that cigarette that's 9 miles long

John & I talked if we each went to our beach & looked across the lake at the SAME TIME one day, would we be able to tell the other was looking at each other? Well we were kids.....Go to Town This old man, have a BALL out there you sure left us a lot of great poetry & feelings...AND laughs back here!

In the early seventies I bought a album of songs by various artists and it had his classic song Sam Stone. That song still chokes me up when I hear it. Bonnie Raitts version of Angel from Montgomery has a similar effect. He was a incredible storyteller and songwriter.

a world without John is a much lonelier place even though i never met him i lost a friend. The wonderful thing about him was that not matter how famous he got he was a regular guy i saw him a few times and every show seemed like he enjoyed himself and seemed like john from down the street singing in my living room i don't think he ever forgot that he was "john the mailman"

He had lived his music , that and the fact that he related to a huge number of long haired people in flyover country that were longing for music that was theirs, when everybody was listening to The Stones and Led Zeppelin we were into John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Billy Joe Shaver

Brother John was six months younger than me born on different sides of Lake Michigan,. I know I happened to meet John when we wuz mebbe 9 or 10 riding somehow together on the Brookfield Zoo, he lived in nearby Maywood, me annual visit to fav Aunt in North Riverside walking distance thru a forest preserve to zoo. We were surprised birthdays were so close, rode the train around the zoo twice talkin. I'd always thought he said his name was John PRIME and of course he wasnt yet anything he'd become one day. This is SUCH a great tribute!! Thank you so much.

Left out it was a miniature open TRAIN that encircled the zoo, went into some places above the rear of big enclosurers for the animals, zebra, giraffe...the train ride is quite long, one lap takes while, stopping at several "stations" on the way around,. John & I talked about if he stood in the beach and across the lake I is a huge feature at Brookfield if you ever get to ChicagoLand.

I guess I was one that took 44 years to catch on, my friend told me two years ago to listen to Sam Stone since I am a Vietnam Veteran . I am so happy to have found John Prine and so sad that he left so soon, I sometimes think about how at 73 I never heard anything but Angel from Montgomery two years ago with Bonnie and James Taylor in Louisiana . RIP John

This is so Cool.., Gulfport. Peace Ya'll. I used to eat at Arnold's Cafeteria, on 8th Ave in Nashville, and I always sat at the table where John's picture was posted above the Napkins Dispenser. I believe Thursdays was Meat Loaf Day. The food is bad ass... and John said so. on meat loaf night.

From 1972 when he first entered my life it seems as though he was there in some form for pretty well most of the events of my life thereafter. I'm 70 now and I guess I've been through the same kind of troubles that inflict just about all of us at one time or another, yet for someone I never met I still struggle every time I see or hear him. When I think of how little I spent on his music compared to what I received in return, it's hard to place where I got a better bargain.

You're post describes me almost exactly. I first discovered John in 72 as well and he's been there with me in all my life. I did get a chance to meet him live at breakfast one morning in 2015 and told him how big a part of my life he had been. He was very humbled and appreciative. His death still hurts.
