Wolfsky9, so glad you are still enjoying "the gal of your dreams." It was lovely to hear her say, "Sometimes your dreams do come true."
As a "cover artist," she has uncovered so many wonderful creative people who, otherwise, wouldn't been lost to history. Her mention of Mildred Bailey got me off and running to Google and UA-cam, only to discover a lovely singer.
How I wish Ms. Ronstadt had the physical strength now to teach! Armed with her intellect, her passion, five decades of performing and recording, and UA-cam, her classes would be SRO! Could you imagine her guest speakers?

This video from the Album Flash series contains four of Linda Ronstadt's music videos taken from the 1983 "What's New" album. All of them interspersed with her chatting with Nelson Riddle.
    1. What's New
    2. I've Got a Crush on You
    3. I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You.
    4. Goodbye

I was stationed at my first assignment in the Air Force up at Eielson AFB just outside Fairbanks Alaska from 1982-1983. When this album came out, I was like "WTF??" so being a music nerd, I had to buy it. I got a lot of side eyes from my dorm buddies with that "What are you smoking??" look. Well, I tell you, it is an AMAZINGLY beautiful album. I was floored by these old songs brought back to life with her great voice and Mr. Riddle's exquisite orchestrations. I would get smashed and fall asleep to this album on many occasions. It is great example of how an artist who is devoted to her craft can take something thought to be "out of style" and bring it back into style! And on a side note, when they made "The Last of Us" (zombie apocalypse series on HBO) they used her incredible song "Long, Long, Time" for the third episode. Wow! Will bring a new generation to revisit this incredibly talented songstress!! Love ya Linda!!

I don't remember how I came across this album, but in 1983, I was 20 years old.
Now I liked rock, Kansas Styx, Boston, etc, but I also loved Glen Gray, Glenn Miller, the Dorsey boys and the like, I couldn't pass this up!!! Fantastic music!!!!

I adore Linda Ronstadt's voice in these songs (well, I adore her voice in every song), but I think she sounds much better with strings than with a saxophone. Her voice is too sweet for that instrument.

When Ronstadt started the "Standards" with Nelson Riddle she was pushing 40 and at her vocal best not to mention I feel at her best looking ie: in the 60s/70s she was too thin (Rock n Roll thin) and starting in the late 80s well into the 90s/2000s she started to put on weight because of what turned out to be a thyroid problem...not her fault...HOWEVER...all that combined and turning 50 in '96 is a death knell for a "new" Rock n Roll fan base for a female singer...not right just is...Men do not have that issue as long as they can still sing and sort of move on stage....Mick Jagger Steven Tyler and Gene Simmons come to mind.

So she switched gears and brought in a whole NEW fanbase not once "Standards" but twice counting the Mexican music she did from the late 80s right thru to the end of career along with a few last pop albums and the 2 Trio albums and 1 last "Standards" in 2003 and a duet with Ann Savoy in 2006 the last album of her career...she kept getting Grammy noms and wins for the remainder of her career...She never quit exploring different Genre's reinventing herself over and over again and did not want to be seen as worn out Rock Star that stayed too long in short shorts and bra less wraps.

I think that is love for the music and her profession...a very nasty disease took away her voice and now her mind is starting to fail her as well as of April 2023 anyway...very tragic ending for an AWESOME talent...prayers for Linda...amen...

p.s. im posting this twice once for my response to Nessus07 thread and once in the general chat...just because Nessus irritated me with his nasty little uninformed comments and her political views although not mine she has stuck to her views for her entire life and hasn't waivered...she is not a hypocrit...like lots of people out there....rant over

This was the beginning of the end of Ronstadt. When she shifted from doing interesting, challenging pop/rock like songs written by Zevon, Costello, Little Feat, etc. and moved to recording schlock ballads, Broadway-opera, Mexican ranchero, etc. And then she said amazingly stupid political/social comments. What a let down.

What a stupid thing to write, This was to show talentless morons, that she had a gutfull of Singing songs she liked for 15 mins and then having to sing them over and over and over and over. She made alot of people alot of money in rock and roll and she decided she wanted to do what she wanted to do.She won how many more Grammys?sold how many more million records after this ? and performed for another 26 years after the release of "Whats New".
Beginning of the end ? She had only just got started !!!

@@rhmayer1 Incorrect use of the word auditory. Kind of embarrassing admission of your lack of English grammar.

    • @rhmayer1
      @rhmayer1 5 років тому +12

@@Nessus07 Auditory - adjective (as per dictionary.com): (1) pertaining to hearing, to the sense of hearing, or to the organs of hearing. (2) perceived through or resulting from the sense of hearing. Latin audītōrius, relating to hearing. (Just as intended: a perceived hearing limitation.)
Also, even if you were right and I had misused the word, that would not be a grammatical error. Grammar deals with sentence construction - proper phrasing and use of punctuation symbols.
