So glad she didn't add about 15 other notes to the composition, or have six dancers in the background. More range than any female singer decades since. An Arizona gem.
Read a funny story about this. The Dodgers voted on who they wanted to sing this, and they voted for Linda. The Dodgers contacted her management, they talked to her, she said OK (if they gave her a jacket?) She got her manager, Peter Asher to help her work it up. After they figured it out, he laughed and said "this song is impossible to sing well. There's not enough money in the world to get me to do it in public, and you agreed to do it for free!" Bonus- she absolutely nailed it!
Absolutely one of the best renditions of our National Anthem ever...sung by Linda Ronstadt at the opening of game 3 of the 1977 World Series in Dodgers Stadium. FABULOUS !!! We love you Linda! Our National Treasure. ( and yes Kieth Jackson: Linda was the proud Dodger fanatic...the Dodger jacket was her only (requested) fee for singing the anthem! What a gal !!! )
Wow is right. She started out in an ordinary way, but ended strongly melodic. Those players began to show real respect. Even Frank Sinatra was impressed.
This was Fall 1977. Linda’s album Simple Dreams was a number one album for 4 consecutive weeks in the summer of ‘77. This was her zenith of super stardom when she sang the national anthem.
true /1 you could also see CYNDI LAUPERS version at the dodgers game ,,,will forever be my best version ,,, did not know she could be that good, it choked me up completely it made me a diehard fan of hers after hearing ,,
A triumph! Singing a stadium with no echo to hear yourself is extremely difficult. Ms Linda R. also had no accompaniment and her voice was beautiful !! and She knows all the words!
With Dodger Stadium, they had the singers set up in deep centerfield, next to the speaker tower so there would be no delay. She did have accompaniment, it was Helen Dell at the Hammond Organ.
I've been a huge Linda Ronstadt for nearly 50 years and I've never seen heard this before, this makes me so happy. She is so good. Excellent performance, she is so consistent, always fantastic. Love you forever Linda.
You can hear how the crowd goes quiet, as people realize the she is REALLY singing the anthem. And then the newscasters at the end, happy and a little bit blown away. One of them calls her a Hall of Famer.
My God....whenever I play this, my entire body is covered with goosebumps....Linda is truly a force of nature!!!! She's absolutely one of a kind. A true gift from God in the beauty of her voice....she also happens to be beautiful as well, inside and out! I count my blessings to be able to experience and revel in the miracle of her talent. It moves my soul. God bless you, Linda! 🙏💞💕
Each time I hear Linda singing the National Anthem, I get close to tears and I feel deep emotion in my skin. I will love her forever and ever. Have a nice day!
Now thats how to sing the National Anthem !!!!! Not like what we hear from the so called talent today !!!!! Linda has one amazing voice !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll Love You Forever Linda !!!!
Linda actually sings the melody to the song with her pure, strong voice. Very often this song is nearly unrecognizable with too much improvising. And I love improvising, but not with the Star Spangled Banner.
I remember watching this live way back in '77.....and being blown away then........her rendition is still one of the best I've heard(including the late, great Whitney Houston).....
Just straightforward no-nonsense perfect singing. After the last 30-40 years of singers trying to melisma us to death, how refreshing. Ronstadt's voice had no limits. Remember Houston's was not sung live (she couldn't have done it live). This performance is remarkable.
She can and she has (March 1991). I know it’s a rarity to do in this day and age, but you’re able to compliment one individual without downplaying another who is just as talented.
Although I am a Yankees Fan was almost compelled to root for The Dodgers in 1977 after seeing this tremendously pure,, powerful and adorable rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. One of the best performances of this difficult tune EVAH! and dig that old old school organ?
Take note people...THIS is how you sing the National Anthem...Straight, no jazz, no pop, and not your own personal showcase to display your singing chops...
Wow! Does this ever bring back memories. My father died in 1977 so many things still stick out in my mind about that year. I've always told people this was without a doubt the best I'd ever heard the Star Spangled Banner sung and was so happy here in 2017 that I found the recording of it online. As far as baseball goes, wow, Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson of the Yankees standing side by side during the National Anthem.
As an old man now I always like the little wiggle, almost like a kid would do. She was never pretentious and just sang it whatever it was she was singing.
She knocked it out of the park, best I have ever heard, pure and simple but with a phenomenally powerful voice that has all the range to do this difficult song justice. As anyone who sings it knows, you gotta start real low and carefully build it up to the crescendo. You gotta have the pipes.
She NEVER needed auto tune, only the pure raw talent she put out. Of course there are other good female singers but there is and always will be only one Linda Ronstadt along with the God given talent she shared with all.
The best. And the announcer at the end says she should be in the Hall of Fame, ironic she was not inducted until 2014, which was way too long a wait. She could sing it all
She made Rosanne Barr sound like a screechy little old woman with a terrible temper tantrum. Extremely glad to see Linda Rondstat made her own mark on something so precious to us as the Star Spangled Banner. While Linda Ronstadt made it so truly patriotic and memorable, Rosanne Barr completely destroyed her's with her obscene gesture and ugly rant, that I would like to see the photo image of Rosanne Barr completely burnt to a crisp and then, to get stomped on.
Yes indeed young lady, Old Glory still waves, 🇺🇸 Thanks Linda, for a life time of fine entertaining, Hall of Fame girl. To say Linda is special is a giant understatement. That was beautiful, and Linda’s smile is priceless. And Garvey, I told you to get rid of those side burns,, bench!
Linda and that powerful voice would have made me take an involuntary knee at the anthem. Always got weak kneed around her live performances. Such a stunner!
It's nice to hear someone sing that song properly. It's a difficult song to sing properly, but many who try it aren't even competent singers to begin with. Linda Ronstadt does a good job at everything see puts her voice to.
This song is about recognizing the strength, resiliency, and tenacity of a nation. It is NOT, nor should it ever be, about the performer, as so many attempt to make it. I applaud Linda Ronstadt, for recognizing this. Very well done!
She performed it straight-on, without any of today's horrible wiggle-notes. Great singer!
Horrible wiggly-notes! 🤣 Spot on! Yeah, not sure why so-called "singers" of today had to add those "curly" notes at the end of each line in a song!
So glad she didn't add about 15 other notes to the composition, or have six dancers in the background. More range than any female singer decades since. An Arizona gem.
She didn't need to. She's Linda Ronstadt
Read a funny story about this. The Dodgers voted on who they wanted to sing this, and they voted for Linda. Like everything Linda does, she puts everything into it. Love her.
She came, she sang, she conquered. We were besotted.
Just straightforward power - no frills and theatrics.
Not sure I've ever heard a better rendition. Linda is simply the best.
true /1 you could also see CYNDI LAUPERS version at the dodgers game ,,,will forever be my best version ,,, did not know she could be that good, it choked me up completely it made me a diehard fan of hers after hearing ,,
@@nsim333 Thank you-will happily watch that one, too!
@@nsim333 yeah but she’s no Ronstadt.
A triumph! Singing a stadium with no echo to hear yourself is extremely difficult. Ms Linda R. also had no accompaniment and her voice was beautiful !! and She knows all the words!

Dodgers vs. Yankees World Series. Whole nation was tuned in. How did you miss this?
And that was LIVE!! There was nothing prerecorded about this performance of the National Anthem!!
Carlos Aguilar yup that's why it's one of the BEST renditions EVER!😁
Adrian Canales gorgeous pure vocals
True stuff!!!
No phoney bs. Just clear open heart singing. How very rare. Blue Jean baby ...
I agree with so many of you. Simple and strong. No vocal gymnastics, no frills. Straight on and no trouble with range change. Brilliant.
What a freaking gem of a clip. Linda Ronstadt - now more than ever - the real deal. Hardcore Adorable - and a voice from the gods.
"She IS a Hall of Famer" Natural clear pure powerful. The way it should be. The way she hits and holds the note on HOME is remarkably gorgeous.
Always liked the straight forward, powerful approach to the SSB. What a pro! A Dodger jacket never looked so good!
Pure, natural voice - she simply but powerfully sings and charms.
You can hear how the crowd goes quiet, as people realize the she is REALLY singing the anthem. And then the newscasters at the end, happy and a little bit blown away. One of them calls her a Hall of Famer.
That was Tom Seaver who rightly called her a Hall of Famer. With Keith Jackson who called her out for her obvious allegiance to the Dodgers lol
Beautiful, straightforward version, no embellishments or lip synching necessary.
Wow! I remember watching this live! Amazing singer ..no lip synching is ever needed when she sings! My favorite singer of all time!!
I have been a Linda Ronstadt fan since the early 1970’s and all I can say she’s GREAT, what else is there to say...
Now thats how to sing the National Anthem !!!!! Not like what we hear from the so called talent today !!!!! Linda has one amazing voice !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll Love You Forever Linda !!!!
After 43 years, this is STILL by far THE BEST rendition of the National Anthem ever.
What a sad loss of such a powerful voice
Linda actually sings the melody to the song with her pure, strong voice. Very often this song is nearly unrecognizable with too much improvising. And I love improvising, but not with the Star Spangled Banner.
As it should be. Linda we miss your voice and that vibe.
Just sung beautifully, no trills, or ornamentation...just well placed vowels, and a resonant voice.
I remember watching this live way back in '77.....and being blown away then........her rendition is still one of the best I've heard(including the late, great Whitney Houston).....

Sung straight, strong and beautifully. She got a word wrong, but I'll take this one over a thousand others. Loved Linda.
Although I am a Yankees Fan was almost compelled to root for The Dodgers in 1977 after seeing this tremendously pure,, powerful and adorable rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. One of the best performances of this difficult tune EVAH! and dig that old old school organ?
Linda Ronstadt: glorious voice, adorably fine and a national treasure. As good as it gets.
knocking it out of the park. Strong and glorious - indeed not a pretentious note or bone in her precious body. Linda was the real deal.
Now she thinks she's Mexico's national treasure.
Take note people...THIS is how you sing the National Anthem...Straight, no jazz, no pop, and not your own personal showcase to display your singing chops...
NonStopRocker
It would be better if she got the words right. "Perilous fight" not "perilous night".
Have you ever heard it done better? Never in all my borned days have I heard someone who slays the thing ike Linda!
The only time before a National baseball game that anyone had a perfect pitch. Linda my love. ❤
Holy baseball, Batman, she knocked that one out of the park!
Wow! Does this ever bring back memories. My father died in 1977 so many things still stick out in my mind about that year. Thank you, Linda, for doing the National ANTHEM straight, straight, straight, the way it deserves to be sung. An honorable performance.
The way she sings, stadium filled brimming to every last seat, styles of era, so retro, and Linda so Broadway sweet, awesome!
THAT, kids, is how you sing the National Anthem.
Amen.
Amen.
And no idiots,"Taking a knee."
Amen!
Sinatra concurred enthusiastically at the very end. And he wasn't easy to impress.
I’m Australian and I have to say that performance was absolutely stunning .... Linda smashed it knocked it clear out of the ballpark
Wow, could she belt it out! Love the Dodgers jacket too....
Not many have the range and pipes to sing this. It's so sad she can't sing anymore.
Sad but glad we had her and have still got her on record.
As an old man now I always like the little wiggle, almost like a kid would do. She was never pretentious and just sang it whatever it was she was singing.
Straight on singing. Powerful and she was adorable.
She still is!
Miss Ronstadt showing how it should be sung! (Loved the Dodger jacket! We were thrilled for her to have this opportunity!)
Everytime I listen this version, I can't prevent some tears coming to my eyes. Thank you Linda! From Buenos Aires Argentina.
She knocked it out of the park, best I have ever heard, pure and simple but with a phenomenally powerful voice that has all the range to do this difficult song justice. As anyone who sings it knows, you gotta start real low and carefully build it up to the crescendo. You gotta have the pipes.
The way it was meant to be sung. Thanks for the post!
What a great talent and what great song
Happy Birthday dear Linda! Thank you for that beautiful voice!💜❤🎹
Thanks for posting. I remember it, but never dreamed I would ever hear it again. Thanks again! She was the greatest voice of her generation.
I was at the game as a 16 year old. I remember it to this day! I was hanging over the outfield wall in right-center field. What an awesome memory!!
I fell madly in love with her that day, and 44 years later, I still am.
This is how you sing the national anthem. Linda sang it with beauty and grace. She didn't add anything fancy for style points.
a difficult song
done beautifully by lovely linda
She NEVER needed auto tune, only the pure raw talent she put out. Of course there are other good female singers but there is and always will be only one Linda Ronstadt along with the God given talent she shared with all.
The best. And the announcer at the end says she should be in the Hall of Fame, ironic she was not inducted until 2014, which was way too long a wait. She could sing it all
What a voice. No nonsense yet a presentation from her musical soul. Don't make 'em like this anymore. There was a game that night?
Best national anthem ever
Only ANN WILSON, has a better version!
Right up there with Wynton Marsalis and his dad.
Simply your own opinion but my vote goes to Whitney Houston.
She made Rosanne Barr sound like a screechy little old woman with a terrible temper tantrum. Extremely glad to see Linda Rondstat made her own mark on something so precious to us as the Star Spangled Banner. That's beautiful!! Love Linda!!
Clear, powerful, to the point.
That's the way to sing it. Remember: the song is the star, not you. She gave it the respect it deserves.
My favorite version hands down! Bravo Linda Ronstadt!!!
What a powerful rendition, amazing voice! :)
very well sung a great example how to sing the national anthem for the singers of today
Being a LR fan for years, this is the first time I saw this performance. Simply awesome!
Crystal clear!! Brilliant!
Superb! She nailed it and without the embellishments so many singers unnecessarily add!
A remarkable vocalist pure and clear. Linda, a southwest Senorita hitting an honest powerful home run.
Yes indeed young lady, Old Glory still waves,
🇺🇸
Thanks Linda, for a life time of fine entertaining, Hall of Fame girl. To say Linda is special is a giant understatement. That was beautiful, and Linda’s smile is priceless.
And Garvey, I told you to get rid of those side burns,, bench!
Wow!!!
Best version of the song. Why? Because she sang the god Damm song without annoying riffs and runs! Love ya Linda!
Linda and that powerful voice would have made me take an involuntary knee at the anthem. Always got weak kneed around her live performances. Such a stunner!
of course she nailed it!!
Absolutely beautiful and very well done!!!✝️✝️🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷👏👏👏👍👍👍🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️💕💕💓💗💗
one of the best real live of the star spangled banner i have heard
Aww, she's so cute. LOVE LINDA!
MERCY, what a cutie. And those sweet little pipes of hers! Unreal.
Love this version, great job.
She is my favorite female singer. She could sing anything and make it sound good perfect pitch very hard song to sing
WOW, Just, WOW, WOW,. NO ONE, NOT Ever, has done it better. God was in this.🎵🎶🎵
Watching in February 2021. She is so gorgeous with a singing voice to match!
Notice how she sang it in the outfield where she could hear the organ the best. That is a professional!
A home run by Linda. Such power but sweet at the same time.
Clear, cool and stunningly adorable.
I love her. Such a great voice!
A great singer, doing Justice to a greater song.
Dodger's need to give her # and a jersey ..for singing her heart out for them.what an honor
It's nice to hear someone sing that song properly. It's a difficult song to sing properly, but many who try it aren't even competent singers to begin with. Linda Ronstadt does a good job at everything see puts her voice to.
Best. Version. Ever.
Only ANN WILSON, has a better version!
Torchy, beautiful, wow, she has some pipes!!!
So emotionally sang... thank you Ms. Linda Ronstadt... GOD be with you ever....praying for your recovery....
This song is about recognizing the strength, resiliency, and tenacity of a nation. It is NOT, nor should it ever be, about the performer, as so many attempt to make it. I applaud Linda Ronstadt, for recognizing this. Very well done!
Gorgeous important pipes. Unadorned, honest, warm and powerful. No one quite like Ronstadt in voice or vibe.
Wow I remember that ....I didn't think twice about how great it was because it was Linda Ronstadt. Such a great singer
I remember watching this on live TV. So beautiful!!
As a Latina, Linda knocked it out of the ballpark!! No one else comes close..
Every time I hear Linda sing this, I am SO proud of being an American!
